Chapter Three: Saving Prince Jasper
"How do we know this is the right way?" Murphy asked, breaking the silence of the group for the first time since they rejoined each other.
"We don't. Space Walker thinks he's a tracker." Bellamy replied.
"It's called cutting sign. Fourth year Earth skills." Wells stated. Then with a shrug he added, "He's good."
Finn spun around on his heel stopping the group from moving on. "You want to keep it down or should I paint a target on your backs?"
Bellamy glanced at Wells with a snicker as both blondes watched Finn. "See? You're invisible."
Jamie looked at Bellamy over her shoulder wondering what his comment was about but turned back when they heard a noise.
"What the hell was that?" Murphy wondered out loud.
The group continued on cautiously. Clarke glanced at Bellamy before pulling Jamie closer to her. "Now would be a good time to take out that gun."
Another sound resonated through the air and Jamie gasped. "Jasper." She whispered, walking towards the source of the noise.
"Jamie." Clarke pulled her cousin back by her shoulder but the blonde pulled free. They continued slowly towards the noise.
"Be careful." Finn murmured to the girls, moving to catch up to them.
Bellamy shadowed the blondes, confusion crossing his features. "What the hell is this?" He asked once they found the source of the noise.
"Jasper!" Jamie called out, finally spotting her best friend tied to the tree. With her eyes on Jasper Jamie didn't see the trap before it broke the ground beneath her. She dropped quickly, a scream caught in her throat.
"Jamie! Get her up!" Finn yelled out, rushing to the blonde's aid. "Pull her up! Pull her up!"
Jamie looked up and her eyes met Bellamy's dark gaze. His grip tightened on her wrist and he slowly pulled her out of the death trap set by the grounders.
"Are you okay?" Finn asked the second Bellamy freed her, his voice frantic.
"Yeah." She replied, returning her gaze to Jasper. "We need to get him down."
Finn studied her a moment longer before turning to the tree. "I'll climb up there and cut the vines."
"Yeah, yeah, I'm with you." Wells stated, stepping closer to the tree with Finn.
Finn shook his head instantly, moving closer to Wells. "No, stay with the girls." He glanced at Bellamy before his eyes met Wells' again. "And watch him."
Finn turned to Murphy. "You, let's go." He returned his attention to the tree, patting Jamie's shoulder as he passed her.
The girls moved closer to each other, Clarke wrapped her arm around Jamie's shoulder. "Are you alright?"
Jamie nodded, keeping her gaze on Jasper. "Clarke, there's a poultice on his wound."
"Medicine? Why would they save his life just to string him up as live bait?" Wells mumbled, his eyes shifting off of Jasper to briefly look at Clarke.
"Maybe what they're trying to catch likes its dinner to be breathing." Bellamy answered, standing on Jamie's other side with his gaze on Jasper.
"Maybe what they're trying to catch is us." Finn stated solemnly, glancing at the girls before climbing the tree.
Jasper let out a low moan of pain and Jamie's heart beat spiked. "Hurry up!"
Clarke glanced at her and squeezed her shoulder. "He'll be okay Jamie."
After a few moments of silence Finn yelled out, pulling Jamie from her thoughts. "Hurry up Murphy!"
"Be careful." Clarke shouted, her watchful gaze on Finn.
There was a low growl from behind them and they all turned towards the ominous sound.
"What the hell was that?" Murphy yelled, continuing to cut the vines holding Jasper up.
Bellamy cautiously stepped away from Jamie's side, his eyes raking across the woods. "Grounders?"
Another growl, much closer this time, caught their attention.
"Bellamy! Gun!" Jamie yelled out, pushing Clarke behind her. A black mountain lion leapt from the woods and threw Bellamy to the ground. A gunshot rang through the air and the wild animal dropped to the ground. All eyes shifted to Wells, who stood with the gun in his shaky grasp.
"Now she sees you." Bellamy muttered, sending Wells a look as he climbed to his feet.
After seeing Bellamy stand, Jamie's attention returned to the boys cutting Jasper loose. Finn glanced down at her as she climbed to the base of the tree ready to help get Jasper down. He nodded to Murphy and he cut the last vine. Finn grabbed Jasper's arms and slowly helped lower him down to Jamie. Jamie wrapped her arms around Jasper's waist and Bellamy joined her, pulling one of Jasper's arms over his shoulder. Jasper's head lolled to the side and rested against Jamie's.
"Jay..." He whispered breathlessly.
"Hey, Jazz." She replied with a soft smile, squeezing his waist lightly. "I got you."
He didn't say anything else as the pair brought him back down to the ground. "Murphy, get on his other side and help me." Bellamy ordered, eyes passing over Jamie briefly.
"No. I'm not letting him go." The small blonde defiantly replied, narrowing her eyes at Bellamy.
Bellamy arched a brow at her and shook his head. "Seriously? He's too heavy for you and you're too short to help me carry him. Just let him go."
Her mouth dropped open at his tone and she clung to Jasper tighter in response. Now, it was her turn to arch her brow daring him to say something. He narrowed his eyes at her in anger before Finn approached them. "I got him Bellamy."
"Whatever." Bellamy retorted, dropping Jasper's arm from his shoulder.
"Thanks Finn." Jamie mumbled with a soft smile.
Finn's cheeks warmed and he smiled down at her. "I think that's the first time you didn't call me Space Walker, Spunky. You starting to like me more?" He waggled his eyebrows at her jokingly and she let out a sharp laugh in return.
"Don't get your hopes up Space boy." She winked at him before pulling Jasper higher up so she could get a better grip on him.
"You got him?"
She nodded to Finn before wincing in pain.
"What's wrong?" He asked, concern coloring his gaze.
She looked behind Jasper at her hand that was squeezing his side. "My hand."
The group had started moving with Clarke and Wells at the front and Bellamy and Murphy waiting at the back with the parachute carrying the mountain lion.
"Hey, you guys going to walk or what?" Murphy asked with a grin. "Your princess already having problems pulling her weight?"
"Shut it Murphy." Jamie spat out, angry at the boy's remark.
Finn glared at him before looking at Jamie's hand. "You need stitches for this. Jamie, I'm sorry but maybe it would be better if someone else carried him."
Instead of replying she huffed and shook her head defiantly. "Let's just go." She mumbled, trying to pull Jasper along with her.
"That's one stubborn princess." Murphy muttered under his breath, getting a glare from both Finn and Jamie.
About an hour into the walk Jamie stumbled slightly, her head becoming more and more light headed with each step she took.
"Hey, guys stop a minute!" Finn called out, gently leaning Jasper against a tree on the ground. He turned to Jamie and grabbed her hand as she tried pulling away from him. "Will you please just let me look at it?"
She sighed and relented as Clarke made her way to her cousin's side. "Jamie, it's split wide open. You've probably lost too much blood now to continue the way you have been." Clarke held Jamie's arm up with a frown on her face. Blood dripped down her arm and down her side in bright patches, coloring the shirt she wore in crimson.
Jamie groaned and leaned against the tree beside Jasper trying to catch her breath. "I knew Monty didn't patch it right."
"Can we just keep moving? We still have quite a bit to go."
Clarke looked up at Bellamy with narrowed eyes. "She's only bleeding like this because she chose to save your sister's life. Wouldn't kill you to have some sympathy."
"Hey, I didn't let her fall to her death back there did I?"
"Shut it! I'm fine!" Jamie pushed off the tree and ripped a piece off Jasper's shirt. She pulled off the old piece of bloody cloth and held it out to Finn with a smirk. "Want your shirt back?"
He shook his head with a small smile on his face. "Keep it to remember me by."
She rolled her eyes before twisting the new piece around her hand, pulling it tight with her teeth. Once satisfied with her work she pulled Jasper's arm over her shoulder once more. "Alright, let's go."
A few hours later they were walking back into camp. Kids gathered around all chattering excitedly. Monty broke through the crowd, his face falling when he saw Jasper's condition.
"Is he...?"
"He's alive. I need boiled water and strips of cloth for bandage." Clarke replied as they continued making their way to the dropship. Monty nodded and immediately headed off to find the supplies the girls would need. Finn helped Jamie get Jasper on a table and retreated outside to let the girls work on him. After they managed to stitch up Jasper and get him cleaned up they headed outside to see what the commotion was. Clarke also patched up Jamie's hand correctly so it wouldn't cause the blonde anymore discomfort. The crowd had cheered Bellamy's name for a while after seeing the mountain lion and Jamie considered themselves fortunate enough to be inside during that.
They found Finn right outside the dropship door and both stopped on either side of him.
"He's stable for now but without medicine..." Clarke trailed off and her eyes widened as she saw what was happening. "They're taking off their wristbands for food? No way. I won't do it."
Finn looked down at the girls before shrugging. "You don't have to."
He walked over to where the food was set out and grabbed two pieces of meat.
"Whoa, whoa, wait, wait! What, you think you play by different rules?" Murphy asked as he intercepted Finn.
Finn grinned down at him and shook his head. "I thought there were no rules." He walked away from Murphy well aware of the gazes on his back as he handed the meat to Jamie and Clarke. Both girls smiled gratefully at him before sinking their teeth into their first meal in two days.
Clarke, Jamie, Octavia and Monty all slept beside Jasper that night in order to keep an eye on him. He continually moaned in his sleep, the pain getting the best of him. Several different voices brought Jamie out of her slumber, the first words she actually heard were, "can he just die already?" and she knew she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep afterwards.
"His pulse is three eighty." Clarke mumbled to Jamie with a look of concern.
Jamie nodded subtly and brushed the hair from Jasper's forehead. She tried to block out his moans along with the other complaints from the surrounding delinquents.
"Quiet!"
"Go to sleep!"
"Will he ever shut up?"
She groaned and placed a light kiss on his forehead. "Don't listen to them Jazz. You're going to pull out of this. I can't lose you, okay?"
"Someone shut that kid up!"
Jamie took in a deep breath and continued playing with Jasper's hair in the way he always loved. "You can't leave me." Jamie whispered to him, a pang in her heart.
"He'll be fine, Jamie." Octavia's voice was nearly a whisper as she stood beside her friend.
"I'm gonna get clean water. Keep an eye on him." Clarke told them quietly before slipping out of the dropship and into the night.
"So, tell me about Atom." Jamie whispered to Octavia with a grin.
Octavia draped her arm around Jamie's shoulder and the two talked quietly the rest of the night.
Two days later Jamie was leaning against the table Jasper was on while Finn and Clarke talked.
Clarke sighed and shook her head in dismay. "The grounders cauterized the wound. Saved his life."
"Saved his life so they could string him up for live bait? Garden of Eden this ain't." Finn replied.
"It's infected." Jamie added.
"He could be septic." Clarke mumbled, glancing at Jamie. Clarke analyzed Jamie's expression before turning to Monty. "Any progress on using the wristbands to contact the Ark?"
Monty remained focused on the band in his hand, the one that he pried off of Jamie an hour prior.
"Monty?"
He looked up at Clarke and set the band on the table he was working at. "That would be a firm no."
Jasper broke out in a sweat and his body started trembling. Jamie's brow furrowed in worry and she patted the boy's face with the cool rag. "Mother would know what to do." She glanced up at Clarke and noticed her cousin staring at Jasper with a blank expression on her face as Wells walked in.
Jasper let out another moan and Wells shifted uneasily in his spot. "How's he doing?"
Jamie's eyes landed on him in a glare. "How does it look like he's doing, genius?"
Wells held his hands up in defense. "Hey, I'm just trying to help."
Jasper let out another moan and Clarke huffed out a breath and turned to Wells. "You want to help? Hold him down."
Monty stood up and glanced at Jamie. "I'm not going to like this am I?"
Clarke shook her head and turned her attention to Jamie. "Hold him still, I need to cut away the infected flesh."
Jamie nodded and gripped Jasper's shoulders tighter. Jasper let out a sharp scream of pain and they all flinched.
Octavia ran through the door, eyes wide with panic. "Stop it! You're killing him!"
"She's trying to save his life." Finn remarked, still grasping Jasper's legs.
"She can't."
They all looked up at Bellamy as he walked in. Wells stepped in front of him with a hostile stance. "Back off."
"We didn't drag him through miles of woods just to let him die." Clarke said, turning to Bellamy.
"That's why you're fighting to save him?" Jamie shouted out, betrayal written across her features.
Clarke flipped around to look at her. "No! Jamie, you know that's not why."
"Kid's a goner. If you can't see that then you're deluded. He's just making people crazy."
Jamie's hostile gaze shifted to Bellamy and she could feel her blood boiling. "Oh, I'm sorry Jasper is such an inconvenience to all of you!"
Octavia placed her hand lightly on Jamie's arm in hopes to calm the blonde down. Jamie's gaze shifted to her and softened slightly, a silent thank you.
"This isn't the Ark Bellamy. Down here every life matters."
Bellamy's gaze shifted to Clarke. "Take a look at him. He's a lost cause."
Jamie turned to Octavia after seeing the impact Bellamy's words had on her. "Hey, we've spent our whole life watching our mother heal people. If we think there's hope, there's hope."
"This isn't about hope, it's about guts. You guys don't have the guts to make the hard choices. I do. He's been like this for three days. If he's not better by tomorrow I'll kill him myself."
"Like hell you will." Jamie replied, glaring daggers at their self-appointed leader.
He didn't say anything just turned to leave. "Octavia, let's go."
Octavia shook her head at her brother, glancing at Jamie before she replied. "No, I'm staying here."
Bellamy left the ship and Monty let out a huff of air. "Power hungry, self-serving jackass. He doesn't care about anyone but himself." His eyes flickered up to Octavia. "No offense."
Finn sighed. "Yeah. Bellamy is all that. But he also happens to be right."
Clarke and Jamie both looked up at him with their mouths dropped open.
"You're mad." Finn mumbled, looking between the girls.
"I'm not mad. You want to think Jasper's a lost cause, go ahead."
Jamie shifted in her spot. "You're wrong." She added to Clarke's statement.
"Yeah, I hope I am." Finn tried to hold Jamie's gaze but she instantly looked back down to Jasper.
Clarke picked up a piece of the red stuff on Jasper's wound. "Whatever this stuff is it must have had antibiotic properties."
Wells stepped closer to her with an arch in his brow. "Let me take a look." When Jamie looked up at him he paused. "Before you refuse my help remember who aced botany in Earth Skills."
"The grounders used it as a poultice. I'm thinking a tea might be more effective if we can figure out what it is." Clarke replied, glancing nervously between Jamie and Wells.
"I know what it is, seaweed. Look, no root structure."
Clarke nodded and looked back up at Jamie. "Right, well then there must be a water source nearby."
"Yeah it would have to have a slow current, lots of rocks. The water would probably be more red than green."
"I know just the place." Finn said, looking from Wells to Clarke.
"Alright. Let's go. Jamie, stay here and watch him." Clarke hugged Jamie briefly before walking out with Wells and Finn.
A short while after they left a swarm of people ran into the dropship coughing. "What's going on?" Monty asked the kid closest to them.
"Air got thick and everybody's skin started burning."
Jamie's eyes widened and she turned to Octavia.
"Jamie, my brother's out there." The younger Blake mumbled in concern.
Jamie placed a hand on Octavia's shoulder. "He's fine, I'm sure he's fine."
"We'll all be fine." Monty added with a small smile knowing they didn't have much of a choice.
As the time passed by slowly and Jasper continued moaning in pain the delinquents trapped in the dropship started getting restless.
"That kid's driving me crazy."
"I can't take this much longer."
"Someone needs to shut that kid up."
Murphy, who was on the bottom floor of the drop ship, staggered to his feet. "That's it. I'm ending this."
One of the others looked up at him in surprise. "I heard Bellamy gave him until tomorrow."
"Yeah, well Bellamy isn't here is he? The kid is dying anyway I'm just getting it over with."
Monty raced Murphy to the ladder and ran up it, throwing the hatch down just as Murphy stuck his head in. "Murphy's going to kill Jasper!"
Octavia rushed over and kicked at him while Jamie searched for something to hold the hatch shut.
"Don't let him in!" Octavia yelled, helping Jamie look for something.
"I'm gonna kill him okay? Let me in! Let me in Monty!"
They all turned towards Murphy's voice and Jamie yanked on a pipe she hoped wasn't important.
"No rush, I'm fine here!" Monty called out frantically trying to keep Murphy out.
"I got it! Move!" Jamie pushed the boy aside and shoved the bar into the hatch, locking it.
"You better open this hatch right now!" Murphy yelled out.
Jamie smirked and retreated to Jasper's side. "I say let him come. I'll kill him before he has the chance to attack you." She whispered to the moaning boy.
They heard distant shouts that the others returned not too long after. Jamie smiled up at Monty. "Can you watch him?"
He nodded and Jamie grabbed Octavia's wrist and hauled the girl out of the dropship. Jamie released her and ran to Clarke, hugging her tightly when she reached her. "I was scared you got hurt in the fog."
"I'm fine." Clarke mumbled, hugging Jamie back tightly. She glanced over Jamie's shoulder and saw Octavia walking hesitantly towards them.
"It's about time you guys came back. They were trying to kill Jasper. Did you get the medicine?" Octavia asked as she joined the blondes.
"Yeah, I got it. Come on, let's go talk." Clarke grabbed Octavia's wrist but Octavia pulled back, glancing at Jamie before going to Bellamy. Jamie noticed the odd behavior and quickly followed the younger Blake. "Wait! Jamie!" Jamie ignored Clarke's calls and shadowed Octavia, a pit of nerves forming in her stomach with each step.
"Octavia, just stay there. Please, stay back." The plea rolled off Bellamy's tongue and Octavia's body tensed.
She glanced at Jamie before stepping closer to Bellamy. "Why?" She went to move around him when Bellamy blocked her path. "Stop." Her voice was steady as she pushed Bellamy out of the way and leaned down over the covered gurney that lay behind Bellamy.
Octavia pulled back the jacket and gasped. "Atom."
Jamie's mouth dropped and her eyes widened when she saw the blistered boy that Octavia had developed a crush on.
"There was nothing I could do." Bellamy mumbled softly.
Octavia put the jacket back in place and climbed to her feet. Bellamy held out his hands hoping to talk to her but she tried to maneuver around him. "O, O, please."
"Don't." She repeated, pushing her way around him and walking straight to Jamie. Octavia threw her arms around the stunned blonde and Jamie immediately hugged her back. She glanced up at Bellamy over Octavia's shoulder and nodded to him before pulling Octavia towards the dropship.
Bellamy watched them walk away and turned to Murphy as he walked up. "Lose anyone here?"
"No."
Bellamy arched a brow in surprise. "Jasper?"
"Still breathing. Barely." Murphy rolled his eyes and shook his head. "I tried to take him out but the crazy blonde and your psycho little sister..."
Bellamy cut him off by roughly shoving him.
"Bellamy?" Murphy asked with hesitation.
Bellamy pushed him against a tree and held him by his collar. "My what? My what?"
"Your little sister." Murphy replied, shoving Bellamy off of him.
"Yeah, that's right. My little sister. Got anything else you want to say about her?"
Murphy hesitated before replying, "Nothing sorry."
"And don't say anything about that blonde either." Bellamy turned to one of the others witnessing the scene. "Get him out of here."
A few hours later Clarke, Jamie, Octavia, Monty, Finn, and Wells were surrounding the table Jasper was on. Finn had pulled out a bottle of whisky and they were all passing it around.
"I'm really sorry about Atom." Clarke told Octavia with a sympathetic smile.
The younger Blake nodded and passed the bottle to Jamie. "I guess we're gonna have to get used to people dying down here, aren't we?"
Jamie ran her hands through Jasper's hair with a soft smile. "But not you."
"You hear us? You're not allowed to die." Octavia added, leaning into the blonde.
Once the bottle came back to Finn he took a big drink and cringed. "Smooth."
Octavia grinned and took a drink. "Disgusting. Love it."
"Can I uh get a hit of that?"
All eyes went to Jasper.
"Jasper!" Octavia called out.
Monty smiled down at his friend. "Let's start with the soft stuff."
"Welcome back buddy." Finn patted his shoulder lightly as Jamie leaned over the boy.
"Thanks for staying with us Jazz." She whispered.
"Was that a dream or did I get speared?"
Everyone let out a short laugh but Clarke was the one to reply. "You'll have a very impressive scar to prove it."
Jasper snorted and shook his head. "My savior."
"Thank you for not dying. I don't think I could've taken that today." Clarke added, smiling down at Jasper.
He grinned his signature grin before shrugging lightly. "I'll try not to die tomorrow too if that's cool." Octavia hugged him lightly, placing a light kiss on his cheek. He smiled lightly at her before opening his mouth and ruining the moment in typical Jasper fashion. "Oh, hello."
