Chapter Thirteen: Nightmares on the Ground
The trek back to camp took much longer than expected since Jamie struggled a bit walking on her legs without a crutch. Bellamy had an arm wrapped around her waist to help support her but with the large bag of guns he was carrying she mostly had to support herself with her own much smaller bag.
When the gate of the camp came into view they heard some voices shouting out and Jamie immediately assumed Octavia was successful on freeing the grounder.
"What if he brings other grounders back?"
When they walked through the gate Jamie spotted Jasper standing beside Octavia with wide eyes. "They'll kill us all!" He shouted out in fear.
"Let the grounders come!" Bellamy called out, making their presence known. When all eyes shifted to him, he continued. "We've been afraid of them for far too long and why? Because of their knives and spears? Well, I don't know about you but I'm tired of being afraid!"
They dropped the bags of guns in front of them, visible to everyone in camp.
"These are weapons, not toys! And we have to be prepared to give them up to the guard when the dropships come but until then they're gonna help keep us safe!" Clarke added, looking around.
Jamie shifted slightly to stand on her own and Bellamy dropped his arm from around her. "And there are plenty more where these come from. Tomorrow we start training. Training to be the warriors we are!" Bellamy's gaze watched Jamie speak, smiling lightly as he watched her. His eyes then analyzed the group of delinquents to notice all of them watching Jamie just as they did with him and Clarke.
"And if the grounders come we're gonna be ready to fight!" Bellamy added to her statement causing everyone in camp to cheer.
After the group started to disperse Bellamy lightly gripped Jamie's arm and pulled her to the side. She arched a brow up at him as his eyes sparkled down at her. "They listen to you, they respect you and most of them care about you. I want you to be our second in command. As unlikely as it is, anytime we're not around, you're in charge."
Her eyes widened and she immediately shook her head. "No way! I can't...I can't be a leader."
Bellamy smirked and shook his head lightly. "You already are Jamie. We're just making it official." He shrugged lightly and smiled at her before turning away.
"Wait! Bellamy!"
He continued on, ignoring her calls and she groaned, turning to go sit by Octavia.
The girl was sitting on a fallen log, leaning against a tree staring out into the darkness of the woods when Jamie plopped down beside her. "You okay?"
Octavia's eyes flickered up to the blonde and she nodded before her gaze returned to the trees in front of her. "I just wonder if he's okay." She whispered.
Jamie glanced at the girl before offering a small smile. "Of course he is. You can't worry about him. He's fine."
A few moments passed in silence before a blanket was draped over Octavia's shoulders and Jamie turned to find Bellamy looking down at them. He smiled softly at Jamie before leaning closer to Octavia. "I don't expect you to forgive me but you'll have to find a way to live with me because I'm not going anywhere."
"Bellamy! Jamie! It's time!"
They both turned to see Clarke gesturing for them to follow her. Jamie climbed up and patted Octavia's shoulder as she started towards Clarke with Bellamy. She paused to wait for him when he stopped and asked Octavia, "that grounder escaping, was that you?"
Jamie tensed up but Octavia casually remained focused on the trees she'd been looking at. "I had nothing to do with it. Thanks for the blanket."
Bellamy sighed before he and Jamie continued into the tent behind Clarke. There were three chairs set up with headphones connected to a monitor with Chancellor Jaha on the screen. Jamie sat down in the middle and gently placed her hand on Bellamy's leg in reassurance. His other leg bounced nervously and she couldn't help but stay more focused on him than the chancellor.
Chancellor Jaha smiled at them before his eyes shifted to Jamie. "Jamie, Clarke, I'll set up a time for you both to speak with your mother when we're done here." His voice had the demanding tone of the chancellor and Jamie knew it wasn't necessarily a request. He turned to Bellamy then, his eyes hardening. "Mr. Blake, I've wanted to talk to you for some time now."
"Before you do, we'd like to say something. When you sent us down here you sent us to die but miraculously most of us are still alive." Clarke started. She glanced at Jamie and Jamie nodded back to her, picking up where Clarke left off.
"In large part that is because of him." Jamie nodded to Bellamy with a soft smile on her face. "Because of Bellamy. He is one of us and he deserves to be pardoned of his crimes just like the rest of us." Her tone was firm and her eyes were unwavering as she spoke to him.
As the chancellor replied Bellamy laced his fingers through Jamie's to calm his nerves. "Clarke, Jamie, I appreciate your point of view but it's not that simple."
"It is if you want to know who on the Ark wants you dead." Bellamy replied in a calm voice. Jamie heard the slight tremor and squeezed his hand as Jaha leaned closer to the monitor. Jaha took a long minute before his gaze met Bellamy's.
"Bellamy Blake, you're pardoned for your crimes. Now, tell me who gave you the gun."
Jamie bit her lip to keep from smiling, her grip on Bellamy's hand tightening.
"Shumway. It was Shumway."
Jaha nodded before abruptly standing and walking out of view of the monitor, leaving the trio alone. Jamie turned to Bellamy with a big smile on her face and before she could think about her actions she threw her arms tightly around his neck. He froze a moment before he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
"I'm so happy you're staying." She whispered softly while one of her hands twisted the small curls of hair on the base of his neck.
"Me too." He cleared his throat as they pulled apart and Clarke started coughing as their mother appeared on the screen.
"Girls. We need to talk, now." Abby's voice was stern and desperate as she greeted them, eyes flickering briefly to Bellamy's. "Alone please."
Bellamy nodded and stood to go, pausing to pat Jamie's back. "It'll be okay." He whispered to her before walking out. Clarke reached over and grabbed Jamie's hand, shooting her a nervous look. Neither were prepared to talk about their father yet.
"You've both been avoiding me and I understand why. I do." Abby's eyes shifted from one girl to the next as they started watering. "But please just let me explain. I did talk to Jaha but he was supposed to help your father, to stop him. Please just try to understand that. I never meant for him to do what he did."
"We don't want to understand that!" Clarke replied hostilely.
"You betrayed him! You're the reason he's gone!" Jamie added.
Abby leaned towards them with a frown prominent on her face. "You guys both need to think about what it could have done! If everyone retaliated it would have been dangerous! I couldn't let your father do that." Her voice broke in a plea but Jamie had already yanked the headphones off.
"I'm done with this." She turned and stormed out of the tent ignoring Clarke's yells for her as tears welled in her eyes. Jamie wiped the few tears that rolled down her cheeks and returned to where Octavia sat. "Have you seen him yet?"
"Well, he's...he's left white flowers for me. I've found a couple here and there over the past few hours."
Jamie smiled at her lightly and bumped her shoulder. "See, that's what I'm talking about. What's his name? I know he speaks English, his features shifted in recognition when I told him we'd be back for him."
Octavia's head quickly turned to Jamie and she smiled lightly. "Lincoln. His name's Lincoln. He actually apologized about what happened with you by the way."
"I told you he was okay." Jamie said with a grin.
Octavia smiled at her and nodded, dropping her head against Jamie's shoulder.
"You trust him?"
"I do." There was no hesitation when Octavia replied so Jamie nodded. "I don't want you going out there alone but you should try to see him again if you can. He obviously likes you."
Octavia gasped and threw her arms around Jamie's waist, pulling her close to her with a hug. "Thank you Jay. I'm so glad you understand."
Jamie smiled and nodded against the younger girl's head. "Let's go to bed, it's been a long day." They retreated to their tent, walking close to one another in a comfortable silence.
A few hours later Jamie sat out by the scorched fire, staring intently at the fading embers. The same nightmare had woken her again and this time she couldn't bear the thought of going back to sleep and reliving that day again.
"Can't sleep?"
She glanced over her shoulder as Bellamy slowly walked closer to her. She shook her head and returned her gaze to the coals in front of her as Bellamy sat down beside her.
"What keeps you up at night Jamie?" His voice was thick and husky with sleep and she couldn't help the blush that spread through her as his arm brushed against hers.
She sighed and shifted nervously beside him still feeling the effects of the dream. She wrapped her arms around herself as chills shot through her and pulled her knees up to her chest. Her eyes widened as she thought back to her nightmare, getting lost in the dying coals of the fire.
"I was five when my mother got floated and I relive it every single night." She glanced at him and he nodded, encouraging her to continue. "It's the same thing every time. I'm running down one of the connecting halls from farm station to alpha and it's like I just knew what was happening. I'm not scared, it's so much more than that. I'm completely terrified, beyond terrified as I run as fast as possible to get to the airlock and when I run in a guard grabs me. At this point I'm screaming and flailing in his arms and then I make eye contact with my mother. She smiles this soft, sad smile before she yells out that she loves me and then the door opens and she's yanked backwards and out." She let out a sharp laugh and shook her head. "It was actually Shumway that held me back now that I think about it."
They sat in silence for a few moments while Bellamy watched her try to regain control of her emotions. He could see how badly the dream seemed to control her and he felt the need to reach out and protect her, to help her.
"What happened after that?" Bellamy's voice was quiet as his eyes shifted from the coals to Jamie's face, analyzing her expression carefully.
Tears welled in her eyes, shining with the light from the fire, as she shook her head and looked down at her fingers that were twisted together. "After that Shumway drug me back to our quarters and a guard was stationed outside the door for three days while they figured out what to do with me."
He shook his head and arched a brow at her. "They left you alone for three days?"
She nodded silently, eyes still focused on the coals. "No one understood why I didn't immediately go stay with my father and Abby but..." She shrugged, tears trailed down her cheeks and she quickly wiped them away before shaking her head. "I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Especially not down here. Now we have other nightmares waiting around for us to screw up so they can kill us."
He was still staring at her while she spoke and it took him a moment to pull himself from the trance. "You can't worry about that Jamie. We'll survive. Hell you've already survived." He reached up and laced his fingers through hers, scooting a bit closer to her.
She glanced up at him and nodded, clearing her throat while she did. "You know, we weren't ever able to go out and spar with each other."
He smiled lightly and nodded. "You're right, we haven't. Would you want to tomorrow morning if we can? We'll take it easy since your legs are still healing."
"I'd love that. Everyone's been treating me like I'm a fragile piece of glass ever since I've gotten back and it's driving me crazy." She rolled her eyes exasperatedly and looked up at him. "I think I've proven myself to where I won't shatter at even the smallest touch. Right?"
He smirked and his gaze refocused on the coals. "You have definitely proven that. I think you're the strongest one here."
She jokingly made a muscle and waggled her eyebrows at him. "Damn right I am!"
He laughed and shook his head, blushing slightly when his eyes met hers. He quickly looked away, a flustered expression crossing his features.
Jamie watched him curiously wondering why he was acting that way when it was rare to see anything but a serious expression on their leader's face. Unless of course he was with two other girls in his tent, surely he would have a different expression then. Not that she's bitter about that or anything...
"What did your mother do to get floated?"
Her eyes widened as he spoke and she quickly turned back to the coals. "Well, she actually um... attacked Shumway. He did some things and she didn't like it so...she defended herself and got the death penalty for it."
His eyes widened as he watched her, not expecting to hear that. He took a deep breath before asking what he really wanted to ask her, fearing the response he'd get. "What did you do?"
"To get arrested?" She asked with an arch in her brow, looking up at him.
He nodded and she let out another sharp laugh. "I thought everyone already knew." She grinned and held his gaze as she replied. "I attacked the group of guards when they took Monty and Jasper away. Shumway was one of them and I purposely went for him but..." She shook her head, the grin growing, "he had back up. It was considered my second strike since I attacked him the night they got Octavia."
His eyes widened in realization and he quickly looked back to the coals. "I don't think I realized that was you."
"It's always been him. He's like the bane of my existence. And yours too apparently." She looked at him to find his gaze back on her. He nodded thoughtfully, tight lipped as he considered everything Shumway did to them. "Hopefully he rots in hell."
"He's probably there now. I don't see them allowing him to live after finding out what you told Jaha. You, Bellamy Blake, are the one most likely responsible for getting rid of that monster." She smiled up at him, relief filling her features. "I hadn't even considered that before I said it. Shumway might already be gone. We probably won't ever have to worry about him again."
He smiled back at her and nodded before his expression wavered again and his eyes returned to the coals. "Your father...he was Abby's younger brother right?"
She nodded, shifting closer to him as the cold air nipped at her skin.
"Do you know the story of how they found him? How he got caught?" When he glanced at her he noticed her holding her arms tightly around her knees with his hand resting atop one of them, revealing the small goosebumps on her skin. He shrugged off his coat and draped it around her shoulders, scooting closer to her as he did so, regaining her hand once more.
She blushed and smiled up at him in thanks before replying to his question. "I do. Abby told me when she visited me in the skybox one night. Apparently, after my mother started showing, I think she was around six months pregnant then, he came out of hiding to take care of her. He planned on taking care of both of us but the guard showed up in the medical station to take him away right after she had me. They let him stick around through the delivery though so I guess that's pretty cool."
"They let him stay for three months?" Bellamy asked, surprised.
"No, I was born at seven months due to some kind of complication. Otherwise he probably would have been gone by then." She looked up at him and her eyes widened when she realized how very close they were. His eyes glanced down to her lips briefly before meeting her gaze once more and she couldn't help the blush that crept into her cheeks again. She also couldn't help but think of the two girls in his tent... which made her flare with jealousy. She took a deep breath to calm her emotions and nearly jumped off the log when they were interrupted.
"What are you two doing up?"
They quickly scooted apart before looking back at Octavia with their hands still linked. The girl had her hands on her hips and she wore a big smirk, well aware of what she had just walked in on. Jamie climbed to her feet, stumbling on her way up, before she shook her head at Octavia. "I um...we couldn't sleep. Nightmares and all. Um...I'll be back in soon." She muttered nervously, causing Octavia's smirk to grow.
"Right. Well, you two kids behave yourselves." She laughed and flipped back around, retreating to their tent.
Jamie groaned silently before turning back to Bellamy. His eyes were focused on the ground by her feet and it took everything in her to make her feet walk back over to him. She took off his coat and handed it back to him with an embarrassed smile on her face. "Thanks. And thank you for everything. I um...really like talking to you Bell."
His flustered expression changed to a smile, a real smile, when she said his name. His eyes shifted up to hers and he nodded. "I like talking to you too Jamie. Get some sleep."
She nodded and stumbled back to the tent, throwing herself on Octavia's cot when she got there and decking the girl in the face with her own pillow.
The next morning Jamie found herself in the middle of a crowd watching a small screen as Chancellor Jaha gave his annual Unity Day speech. "My friends, this is a historic Unity Day. Every year, we mark the moment our ancestors of the twelve stations joined to form the Ark, but this is the last time we do so while aboard her. Next year, on the ground."
There were cheers from those on the Ark that watched the speech while the delinquents made snarky comments amongst themselves. "Right, after we did all the work! Someone shut him up!"
Raven turned to Miller and rolled her eyes at Jamie. "You shut up Miller, no one's forcing you to watch!"
Jamie laughed at the girl and high fived her with a smirk in Miller's direction before looking back to the screen.
"For ninety-seven years, we have eked out an existence hoping that someday our descendants would return to Earth." Jaha continued.
Jamie rolled her eyes and pushed her way through the crowd and to Monty and Jasper's tent to see how the moonshine was coming along. She parted the flap just as Jasper came stumbling out with a wide smile. "Jamie! Come get some!"
She smiled at him and glanced at Monty to see him putting his things away before she turned back to Jasper. "Monty strikes again! We call this batch Unity juice! Who's thirsty?" Jasper yelled out.
"Jamie, save me some!" Monty called out before she let the tent flap fall. She grabbed a cup for Monty and one for herself as Jasper started parting through the crowd. "Happy Unity Day! Pass it around!"
"Hey!"
"What happened?"
"Where'd they go?"
"That was my favorite part!"
Jamie looked away from Jasper at the crowd gathered around the blank tv as the delinquents started complaining. "Hey, Raven, what happened?" She asked, joining the mechanic once more. They pushed their way to the monitor to see what was going on but Raven just shrugged. "I have no clue. I'll work on it and let you know if I find anything."
Jamie nodded and went back over to Monty and Jasper, handing Monty his drink as Jasper continued drinking.
"Jamie!"
She turned and smiled lightly at Bellamy as he strode towards her. "What's up?"
"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to join us on a hunt. You're getting around much better now so you should be fine and I know how you hate staying around camp all the time."
"I do but I should probably stay here and help Raven with the radio and the bullets. I appreciate the offer though." She smiled again and he nodded before retreating back the way he came.
"What was that about? Why didn't you go?"
Jamie sighed before turning to Octavia. "Because last I checked he was shacking up with two girls here and I'm not about to be the third."
Octavia frowned and nodded in understanding. "I get it. I'll um...see you around alright?"
Jamie nodded and decided to go to the dropship where Raven was working on the radio. After a few silent moments she asked, "anything yet?" as she climbed up on a stool beside the mechanic.
"No, I have no clue why they stopped. It's like it got terminated on their end."
Jamie leaned forward and pulled her legs up on the stool. "I wonder what would cause that."
She shrugged at the blonde and froze when Bellamy walked in.
"Hey, Jamie, can we talk for a minute?"
Jamie tensed slightly, her eyes focused on Raven. "Um yeah." She jumped off the stool and paused by Raven. "Can you let me know what you find out? I'd like to get communication set up with the Ark again as quickly as possible."
Raven mock saluted her with a broad smile. "Sure thing boss."
Jamie rolled her eyes as she jokingly punched the mechanic in the arm and joined Bellamy with an arch in her brow. "Yes?"
He scratched his head and his gaze shifted nervously to the floor, something she had been seeing a lot of lately. "I want you to go on the hunt with us. You're one of our best shooters and I'm sure Raven can figure out the radio on her own."
"Okay..." She let the sentence trail until Bellamy's eyes finally met hers. "Is this about more than just a hunting trip Bell?"
He blushed and quickly shook his head with a light smile. "No, of course not just wanted to...you know...hunt." He stumbled over his words before his eyes widened and he cleared his throat. "Okay, just come find me when you're ready."
She nodded and watched him retreat, jumping when Raven elbowed her. "You dog!"
"What?" Jamie asked, bewildered.
Raven laughed and shook her head. "You two are totally into each other! Why aren't you going after him?"
Jamie groaned and her eyes drifted back to the door Bellamy had just exited through. "He's not interested. I know he's not."
"Then why was Mr. big shot leader tripping all over himself just talking to you?"
"He doesn't like me Raven. Otherwise he wouldn't have had two girls in his tent the night that you got here." Jamie replied quickly, her eyes hardening when she thought about that night.
Raven's eyes widened and confusion flickered across her features. "That's weird. I haven't seen him with anyone since I've been here. Hell the first few days I was here he was just panicking over you and Octavia being gone."
Jamie's cheeks reddened and she had to fight the small smile that slipped onto her face. "Really?"
"Oh, yeah. The way he had everyone searching for you guys I assumed you were his girl. Especially with the way he acted when you were brought back." Raven studied Jamie's expression, smiling when the blonde blushed even more. "Yeah, there's something between you two and I'm going to figure out what. But now, now you go hunt my little butterfly." She shooed Jamie out of her area and the blonde left, laughing as she stumbled out of the dropship and right into Bellamy.
"Oh, hey, sorry I was coming to see if you were ready." His hand was gripping her arm to keep her from falling and as she glanced down at it he quickly released her and took a step back. "Sorry." He mumbled quietly, flipping around and heading towards the gate.
As she studied him she couldn't help but think that maybe there could be a small chance Raven was right since he was acting super weird around her and that was typically how she acted when she liked someone. Like him. She smirked and quickly followed him thinking this hunting trip might be exactly what she needed with Bellamy.
