Chapter Six: Saving Charlotte
A/N: Hey guys, just wanted to give you all a heads up that I've manipulated the timeline a bit so the timing in my story is different from the show! Thanks for reading :)
Dread swept through Jamie as she watched Charlotte's eyes tear up. Charlotte focused on Jamie, a plea on her face as she studied the blonde.
"Oh my God." Clarke muttered, grabbing Bellamy's axe and cutting through the rope that held Murphy, all before anyone else even reacted. Finn glanced around at the others before rushing forward, still holding Jamie, and grabbing Charlotte with his free hand. Together, they led the small girl to the closest tent, Bellamy's. Jamie took in staggering breaths as time seemed to slow down. Her eyes studied Charlotte's terrified ones, wishing everything was different.
Finn released Charlotte before turning to Jamie. He placed a hand on her arm lightly and turned her towards him. "Jamie, you alright?"
Jamie's eyes remained on Charlotte as she nodded her head. She walked towards the girl and pulled her into her, holding her tightly. "It'll be okay." She whispered as Charlotte tightened her grasp around her. Clarke and Bellamy joined them then. Clarke went to Finn's side with worry in her features while Bellamy joined Jamie and Charlotte.
"Bring out the girl Bellamy!"
They all turned towards the entrance of the tent and Jamie's grip tightened on Charlotte.
Murphy's voice was still ragged and raspy but there was a different fury behind his words now.
"Why, Charlotte?" Bellamy asked, flipping back around and facing the small girl. She had her arms wrapped tightly around Jamie's waist and tears in her eyes as she looked up at Bellamy. "I was just trying to slay my demons. Just like you told me."
Clarke's eyes widened and she glanced at Finn before taking a step closer to the trio. "What the hell is she talking about?"
Bellamy sighed and glanced at Clarke and Finn. "She misunderstood me." He looked back down at Charlotte as she finally released Jamie. "Charlotte, that's not what I meant."
"Bring the girl out now!" Murphy yelled again.
"Please don't let them hurt me." Charlotte pleaded with Jamie and Bellamy. Jamie looked up at Bellamy and they held each other's gazes for a moment before looking back down at Charlotte. "We won't, you'll be okay." Jamie reassured the girl.
"If you guys have any bright ideas, speak up." Bellamy mentioned, turning to Finn and Clarke once again.
The two exchanged a glance but didn't say anything.
Bellamy's eyes narrowed and he let out a deep breath. "Now you stay quiet?"
"Those are your boys out there." Finn replied, pointing outside.
"This is not my fault! If she had listened to me those idiots would still be building the wall!" Bellamy took a step forward as his voice rose slightly, the anger flooding through him.
"You want to build a society princess? Let's build a society! Bring her out!" Murphy shouted.
Charlotte flinched into Jamie and grabbed her hand before looking up at Bellamy. "No! Please Bellamy!"
He instantly leaned down to her level to speak to her. "Charlotte, hey, it's gonna be okay. Just stay with them, okay?"
She nodded and he stood back up. His eyes shifted to Jamie before he turned and retreated from the tent. Jamie glanced down at Charlotte and squeezed the girl's shoulders. "Stay with Clarke and Finn okay? They'll keep you safe. We'll find you later."
"Well, well, well look who decided to join us!"
They looked up when Murphy greeted Bellamy outside and Jamie sent a small smile to Charlotte. "Be careful." She mumbled before going to Clarke. She hugged her cousin briefly and turned to Finn. "Keep them safe space boy."
He smiled lightly at her and nodded, glancing at Clarke as Jamie stepped outside. She made her way over to where Octavia and Jasper stood, facing Bellamy.
"Dial it down and back off." Bellamy said, stepping closer to Murphy.
Murphy's eyes narrowed and he took a step towards Bellamy. "Or what? What are you gonna do about me? Hang me?"
Bellamy sighed but didn't back away as the angered boy sauntered closer. "I was just giving the people what they wanted."
Murphy grinned and glanced at Jamie. "Yeah, yeah that's a good idea. Why don't we do that right now?" He looked around the group, eyes settling on the blonde once more. Jasper shifted slightly in front of Jamie, noticing the malice in Murphy's gaze. "Who here wants to see the real murderer hung up? All in favor?" Murphy raised his hand and looked around the group, eyes narrowing when only four of his friends raised their hands. "I see. So, it's okay to string me up for nothing but when this little bitch confesses you want to let her walk?" He gaze returned to Jamie and he took a step towards her. "Cowards! All of you are cowards!"
"Hey! Murphy!" Bellamy took a step towards the boy with an uneasy glance at Jamie. "It's over."
"Whatever you say boss." Murphy replied with a small snicker. The moment Bellamy turned around Murphy picked up a large piece of wood and slammed it into Bellamy's head.
"You son of a bitch!" Octavia lunged forward but Jamie quickly pulled her back as Murphy spun towards her, a smirk on his face. Jasper rushed towards Murphy only to be punched in the face and drop to the ground.
"Come on, let's get the girl." Murphy called out, his four friends following. Jamie quickly released Octavia and they both ran to Bellamy's side. Jamie watched as Monty checked Jasper's pulse, sending her a nod. She returned her attention to Bellamy then, pushing his hair away from his wound.
"Is he going to be okay?" Octavia whispered, voice wavering as her eyes watered.
Jamie checked over the wound quickly before two of her fingers drifted down to Bellamy's neck. She pushed in lightly and checked his pulse, relief flooding through her. "He should be fine." She replied, sending a reassuring smile to her before looking back down at Bellamy. "Can you get me something clean for his head, Tay?"
Octavia nodded frantically and rushed off. Jamie sighed and pulled up one of Bellamy's eyelids and his eyes instantly responded to the light. She let out the breath she'd been holding since he got hit and laid a hand lightly on his forehead. She found a small smile slip onto her face as his temperature seemed to be normal as well.
"Charlotte! I know you can hear me! And when I find you, you're gonna pay!" Murphy's voice echoed through the distance and chills ran down Jamie's spine. Now, she wished she let them hang him.
An hour passed by quickly as Jamie helped tend to Bellamy and Jasper with Octavia and Monty's help. They could still hear Murphy shouting in the distance and each yell caused Jamie's heart to clinch more than the last. This boy wouldn't rest until he found her. And then what? The only way Clarke and Finn could help her would be to hide and they couldn't hide forever. They were in Bellamy's tent when Jasper woke up. He sat up and looked around with a furrowed brow before Octavia pushed him back down to the ground. "Stay still, we don't know how much damage he did."
Jasper looked over to where Jamie was stitching up Bellamy's head and his mouth dropped open. "Where's Charlotte and Murphy?"
"Clarke and Finn took off with Charlotte and Murphy is chasing them through the woods. And you're probably fine to move around Jazz." Jamie replied, sitting back up as she finished working on Bellamy. She smiled lightly at Octavia as the girl worried about Jasper.
Her fingers lightly checked Bellamy's pulse again as her gaze remained on Jasper and Octavia. She didn't understand when it happened but she found herself caring for their leader, more than she hoped she would. After Jasper finally turned to Jamie, without immediately looking back at Octavia, Jamie was able to look at his face closely. She grimaced when she saw the deep purple bruise highlighting his cheek bone. "I'm sorry, Jazz." She whispered to her friend.
Jasper arched a brow before shaking his head. "You had nothing to do with this. You told Clarke what would happen she just...she didn't understand."
"It's her inability to stop comparing everything to father that's going to get someone killed." Jamie mumbled in reply, eyes shifting back down to Bellamy.
"Yeah, and we all know who that someone will be."
All eyes went to Monty then as he fidgeted in his spot. "What? We do. Jamie, you don't have it in you to let people do things on their own. You've always been that way. You always take on the dangers of protecting everyone even if you shouldn't be involved." He sighed and dropped his head into his hands. "It's the hardest part about loving you."
Her eyes widened and she sucked in a sharp breath as Jasper agreed. "He's right Jamie Jam. Maybe this is one that you should just let go." His voice broke as he studied her but he didn't stop talking. "Mon and I have always loved you, will always love you, always tried to look after you and protect you but it's never been easy. You always try to save everyone. What happens when you go after Charlotte and Murphy traps and tortures you instead? We all saw the way he was looking at you. What happens then?"
"That won't happen. She's not going after Charlotte alone."
They all looked down at Bellamy and Jamie's heart skipped a beat when she found his dark eyes focused on her. A blush crept into her cheeks and she smiled lightly at the boy. She hesitantly reached down and brushed the hair off his forehead once more. A light smile appeared on his face when her hand made contact with his skin and it caused her smile to grow. "And who will be with me?" She whispered, staring into his chocolate brown eyes.
His own smile grew marginally as he watched her features brighten. "Me." He leaned up on his elbows then and finally looked away from her, clearing his throat in the process. "Can someone fill me in?" His deep voice echoed through the tent reclaiming his status of camp leader with one question.
"Clarke and Finn took off with Charlotte and Murphy has been chasing them since." Jamie replied, her eyes focused on her blood stained hands. "We should head out before it gets completely dark if we want to find them."
Bellamy pulled himself up into a sitting position and his eyes widened when he saw Jasper's face. "What happened to you?"
"Murphy punched me." Jasper admitted sheepishly.
Octavia placed a hand on the boy's knee with a stern look. "Because you rushed forward to stop him."
"Brave little Jazz." Jamie whispered with a smile.
Jasper's cheeks reddened and he shrugged nonchalantly. "It was no big deal."
"Give yourself more credit Jasper. You should be proud of yourself for stepping in." Bellamy said, nodding at Jasper. He climbed to his feet then and looked at Jamie. He held out a hand for her and she eagerly took it and let him pull her to her feet. Her hands started absently stroking each other, trying to get rid of the blood. He leaned down then and grabbed a dirty shirt that was on the floor of his tent before grabbing a bottle of water too. He dumped some water on the shirt before grabbing one of Jamie's hands, lightly scrubbing it to remove the blood. Once all of the blood was gone he dropped her hand and grabbed the other, looking up at her and holding her gaze. "Thank you for fixing me up." He whispered with another small smile. His hand held hers lightly as he cleaned it and she could feel the warmth spreading through her body from his touch. Her cheeks warmed and her eyes quickly moved to their hands. Her hands were clean now and Bellamy squeezed the one lightly before releasing her completely.
She cleared her throat and her eyes met his once again. "We should probably get going."
He nodded and his eyes started searching the tent, looking for something. Her own eyes shifted nervously to the trio standing in the tent, watching her and Bellamy's interaction with wide eyes. Octavia had a wide grin on her face and Jamie smirked, pulling her gaze away from her friends. "Here, it'll be cold out there." Bellamy straightened up and tossed her one of his jackets while he pulled his other one on.
She pulled it on and after hugging her friends they were off.
The darkness of the night had come quickly as Jamie followed Bellamy through the woods. Neither spoke and they moved like hunters so they didn't even make any noise as they maneuvered around trees and through the dense foliage. They heard Murphy's yells on occasion although they had become infrequent compared to when he first left the camp.
Two hours passed and Bellamy finally stopped for a break. They both leaned against a tree taking sips of water, waiting to see if Murphy would scream out to tell them his location. They hadn't been this far out while hunting yet so neither of them were familiar with the area. Jamie gripped the jacket tighter around her body and slid her icy hands into the pockets. She hadn't expected it to be so cold. She quickly became thankful that Bellamy gave her the jacket and even enjoyed the smell of it every time she moved. It smelled just like him; his scent full of pine and mint. He glanced down at her and arched a brow but she waved him off. "I'm fine." She whispered before taking another drink of water. He nodded, and his eyes spotted something. He quickly moved to follow the set of tracks that he saw, one set considerably smaller than the others. Jamie quickly caught on to what he was doing and joined him, pointing him in the direction they needed to go.
"Come on Charlotte! They can't protect you forever!"
They both froze when Murphy's voice seemed to be just a few feet from them and watched as the small group of boys ran past them. Jamie looked at Bellamy and she nodded to the group with a question in her eyes. He nodded back, moving to take the lead. They silently followed Murphy and his goons until the group suddenly stopped.
"Quiet! I hear something."
Bellamy glanced at Jamie and they both edged back behind a tree.
"Charlotte, is that you?" Murphy looked around with a grin on his face before he took in a deep breath, excitement showing prominently in his features. "Jamie? You out there?"
Jamie's eyes widened and she moved closer to Bellamy. What is with this kid? And why her? She shook her head, clearing her thoughts as Murphy started coming closer to them. Bellamy wrapped his hand around her wrist and guided her behind him so she was completely hidden from Murphy's view but his eyes stayed on Murphy the entire time.
A shrill scream broke through the silence causing all of them to jump. "Charlotte!" Murphy screamed out, facing the source of the scream.
"Murphy! I'm over here!" The girl yelled back.
The group excitedly made their advance on the girl and the moment they started putting distance between them, Bellamy pulled Jamie on a different path towards the scream. They ran silently through the night and he stopped abruptly when they heard the patter of smaller feet. His hand still gripped Jamie's wrist as his eyes searched the night. Jamie then pulled her wrist out of his grasp, gaining his attention. She moved her hand to his and laced their fingers together, her eyes moving to the darkness around them. He squeezed her hand tightly as someone ran closer to them. When the shadow became clear Bellamy quietly reached out and grabbed Charlotte, wrapping his arms around her waist. She screamed out in fear and he quickly shushed her.
"Charlotte! You can't hide forever! Don't worry, we won't hurt you!" Murphy yelled, coming closer.
"Let me go!" Charlotte fought Bellamy's hold and he tightened his arms around her.
"Charlotte! Stop!" Jamie quietly pleaded with the girl.
Bellamy leaned down to look at her while still maintaining his hold on her. "We are trying to help you!"
She stopped fighting him for a moment before replying. "I am not your sister. Just let me go."
Bellamy's eyes widened and he glanced at Jamie with an arch in his brow.
"I'm over here!" Charlotte yelled out, breaking away from Bellamy only for Jamie to grab her arms.
"Are you trying to get us all killed?" Bellamy whisper yelled at the girl.
Charlotte turned her pleading eyes up to Jamie's. "Just go, I'm the one they want!"
Jamie tightened her grip on Charlotte's arm, shaking her head. "Charlotte, we won't leave you."
"Please, you guys just go." She turned her gaze back to Bellamy. "Please Bellamy. Murphy! Over here!"
"Come on out Charlotte! Come on out!" Murphy yelled back, considerably closer than what he was only moments before. Jamie's wide eyes met Bellamy's briefly before he threw the small girl over his shoulder.
"Put me down!" She screamed out, kicking as hard as she could.
"Charlotte? Charlotte!" Murphy's voice was laced with excitement and it caused chills to shoot down Jamie's spine. Why was he so excited about this, Jamie wondered.
Bellamy started running through the trees again with Jamie right behind him. They reached a clearing and Bellamy stopped and looked around with frantic eyes. "Damn it!" He cursed under his breath, putting Charlotte down. Jamie walked to the edge of the tall cliff, eyes straining to see the bottom. Charlotte ran up beside her and Jamie quickly wrapped an arm around her and pulled away from the edge. Murphy burst through the trees with several others, a large smile brightening his face.
"Jamie." He nodded to her with a smirk before his gaze flickered to Charlotte. "Ah, there she is. Bellamy, you cannot fight all of us just give her up."
Bellamy stood up straighter and moved to where he was in front of the girls. "Maybe not but I guarantee I'll take a few of you with me."
"Bellamy, Jamie! Stop!" Clarke ran into the clearing with Finn on her tail. Finn's eyes widened when he saw Jamie but he still remained by Clarke. Murphy reacted immediately; he grabbed Clarke and held her against him with a knife at her throat.
"Clarke!" Jamie rushed forward but Bellamy wrapped an arm around her and pulled her against him. "No, Murphy please don't hurt her." Jamie pleaded with him, breathlessly.
Clarke glanced at Murphy out of the corner of her eye. "This has gone too far. Just calm down and we'll talk about this."
"I am sick of hearing you talk princess." Murphy mumbled in Clarke's ear, his eyes trained on the blonde in Bellamy's arm.
Finn was pushed back by one of the others as he lunged for Murphy. "Let her go!"
"I will slit her throat." Murphy said, eyes still on Jamie.
Clarke's eyes focused on Jamie, begging her not to interfere. Jamie's chest rose and fell rapidly as panic surged through her and she struggled to catch her breath. Clarke was practically her sister and they hadn't even made up from their fight earlier. This couldn't happen. Jamie's hand grasped Bellamy's arm tightly and his hold tightened around her. She could feel his heart pounding in his chest, pressed up against her back.
"No, please. Please don't hurt her." Charlotte begged Murphy with a small voice.
Murphy stepped closer to them, the knife pressing in on Clarke's throat. "Don't hurt her? Okay, I'll make you a deal. You and Jamie come with me and I'll let her go."
"No! Don't do it!" Clarke yelled out against the knife.
Charlotte ran forward but Bellamy stopped her with his other arm.
"No! I have to! Let me go Bellamy!" She cried out, fighting his hold.
"Murphy, this is not happening." Bellamy's voice was steady as he spoke, eyes focused on Murphy. "You won't get either of them. Not while I'm still alive to stop you."
"I can't let any of you get hurt anymore. Not because of me. Not after what I did." Charlotte spoke slowly, softly, gaining everyone's attention. She broke free of Bellamy's grip and dove off the edge of the cliff before anyone could react.
"Charlotte!" Jamie screamed out, her and Bellamy rushing to the edge a moment too late. Bellamy wrapped his arms around Jamie to make sure she didn't follow the small girl and she started screaming out in his arms. "No, no, no!"
Clarke joined them a second later, peering over the edge beside Jamie. She moved closer to her cousin, and Jamie's arms wrapped around her the moment Bellamy released her. The girls stared in shock at the darkness below, holding on to one another tightly.
"Bellamy." Murphy mumbled, backing away as Bellamy stalked closer to him. Bellamy yelled out in anger before tackling Murphy to the ground.
"Bellamy!" Murphy screamed out in pain as he got pummeled by Bellamy's fists.
Clarke turned and watched the scene a moment before pulling Jamie to her feet. "Bellamy! Stop, you'll kill him!"
Bellamy continued beating the boy below him with no mercy until Finn tried pulling him off of him.
"Get off of me! He deserves to die!" Bellamy lunged at him once again, his fist connecting to Murphy's face.
"Bellamy!"
He stopped, with his fist a few inches from Murphy's face, and his eyes slowly met Jamie's. Her voice had sounded so hurt when she screamed out his name that it broke through his anger. His eyes watched her closely, studying her features.
"We don't get to decide who lives and who dies. Not down here." Clarke stated, stepping closer to him with Jamie's arm still wrapped around her.
"So help me God if you say the people have a right to decide." Bellamy finally tore his gaze off Jamie and looked at Clarke while he spoke.
She shook her head, tears in her eyes, "No, I was wrong before. You were right." She looked at Jamie with tears in her eyes. "You were both right. Sometimes it's dangerous to tell people the truth but if we're going to survive down here we can't just live by whatever the hell we want. We need rules." She looked back at Bellamy, tightening her hold on Jamie, needing the support.
Bellamy sighed and straightened up. "And who makes the rules? You?" The anger was clear in his tone and he made sure his eyes never moved from Clarke's as he spoke to her. After all, aside from Murphy she was the only one Bellamy was mad at.
"For now we make the rules, okay?"
"So, what then? We just take him back and pretend like it didn't happen?" Bellamy glanced back at Murphy, pointing angrily at the boy as he spoke.
"No! We..." Clarke glanced at Jamie with an arch in her brow.
"Banish him." Jamie said, finishing Clarke's suggestion.
Bellamy looked at Jamie and nodded, immediately accepting her answer, before returning his attention to Murphy. "Get up!" He drug Murphy past Clarke and Jamie over to the edge.
"Bellamy! Stop!" Clarke yelled out, fear lacing her words, releasing Jamie as she stepped closer to Bellamy.
"If I ever catch you near camp," He glanced at Jamie before looking back to Murphy, "or near Jamie, we'll be back here. Understand?"
Murphy nodded silently and Bellamy threw him to the ground. He turned to Murphy's followers with narrowed eyes. "As for the four of you, you can come back and follow me or go with him to die. Your choice." He quickly walked away, grabbing Jamie's arm gently as he walked by her. He looked down at her briefly and they continued walking back to camp with his hand clamped tightly around hers the whole way.
