Chapter Seven: Butterflies in the Dark

"Do you think everyone up there is still alive?"

Jamie looked over at Monty with an arch in her brow. Two days had passed since the Charlotte incident and for the most part, thankfully, things seemed quiet. She sat in between Monty and Jasper, laying down against some logs by the fire. Her coat was propped beneath her head as a pillow as they looked up at the stars. "Why wouldn't they be?"

Monty shrugged before turning towards her. "I don't know. I was just wondering, I mean my parents are up there you know?"

She returned her attention to the stars above them. "Yeah, I know Mon. I'm sure they're fine. Jazz's parents are probably fine too."

"I don't care." Jasper mumbled quietly, his eyes closed. Jamie and Monty both turned to look at the boy.

Jasper had never been particularly close to either of his parents and they both completely understood why.

"Jasper! You get in here this instant!"

Monty and Jamie looked up as Jasper climbed to his feet slowly. He frowned at them before dragging himself into the large dining room his mother stood in, waiting to yell at him.

"I told you to wash the dishes!"

He shuffled nervously in front of her with his eyes trained on his feet. "I'm sorry mama, I have friends over so I thought..."

"You thought what?! I should send those two home right now!"

Jamie flinched and looked up at Monty with a frown. They hated when Jasper got in trouble especially since the boy rarely did anything to deserve it.

"I'm sorry." Jasper replied quietly.

Mrs. Jordan sighed heavily before gesturing him away. "Get out of my sight."

He ran back into his room and shut the door quietly before plopping down on the floor between Monty and Jamie. His eyes remained on the toys at their feet and before he realized what was happening two pairs of arms were hugging him tightly.

Jamie scooted closer to Jasper when the memory flashed through her mind. She was thankful for the distance between them and their parents. At least for the time being. Her arm rested against his and she watched the corner of his lip turn up before he turned to look at her. "I don't want to talk about them right now. They're not my problem down here."

"I know." She replied quietly, offering him a small smile. The wind blew then causing Jamie to shiver from the sudden cold. She groaned before leaning up and pulling her jacket, Bellamy's jacket, on. She smiled lightly while laying back down, loving how his scent seemed to surround her.

"You've got that look on your face."

She arched a brow at Jasper before Monty started in on her too.

"She does. And I know who it's for."

They both started laughing and Jamie's cheeks heated. This wouldn't be the first time the two boys harassed her for her crush, she thought that's what they were calling it at least, on Bellamy.

She groaned once again before glancing at the two. "Will you guys stop it?"

"Stop what?"

All three pairs of eyes looked up when Bellamy's voice entered the scenario.

"Yeah, Jamie, stop what?" Jasper asked with a big grin on his face.

Jamie instantly shook her head and her eyes went down to the fire. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Bellamy grinned and cleared his throat, glancing around before returning his attention to her. "Jamie, I was hoping you had a moment?"

"She does."

"Yeah, go on Jamie Jam."

Both boys immediately replied, grins on their faces as they pushed Jamie off the ground.

She sent both of them a death glare before following Bellamy. "I do have to stop by my tent to grab something really quick if you don't mind."

"Nope, don't mind." She replied quietly with a small smile. He nodded to her before slipping into his tent. He returned a moment later, pulling his shirt back down. She arched a brow at him and he just gestured towards the gate.

"I don't want to take a chance of going out there with you and not have anything to protect us."

"Right." She mumbled, nodding shyly at him as he started walking once more. Her mind raced at the possibilities of where he could be taking her and why. Once they stepped through the gate he paused to walk side by side with her versus leading her.

"A few days ago Octavia came to me with a huge smile plastered onto her face and then she showed me this and I don't know. I think you'll like it too." He mumbled with a small smile on his face.

Jamie looked up at him with her own smile wondering what on Earth it could be (no pun intended). "And you wanted to show me versus having her show me because...?"

He glanced up at her before quickly returning his gaze to the path they were on. "It's not safe out here for her at night."

"And it's safe for you?"

He shrugged, keeping his gaze on the ground in front of them. "I can protect you better than she can."

"I already told you I don't need protecting." She crossed her arms across her chest as they walked and she saw him look at her out of the corner of her eye.

"I know that. Maybe I just want to make sure you're safe."

She looked up at him, meeting his gaze. She blushed slightly and looked away when she realized his cheeks had reddened when their eyes met. She felt foolish for thinking it but her instincts were screaming that he might like her too.

He bent down and stepped below a low hanging branch, pausing to hold it up for her to climb under as well. He offered her his hand which she eagerly accepted, another blush spreading through her when their skin touched. He helped her under the branch and she stopped when she saw what he wanted to show her, a bright smile lighting up her face. He stood up beside her and lightly placed his hand on her lower back. Heat flooded through her at his touch and she couldn't help blushing as her smile grew.

There were many things that could be said about Bellamy Blake and usually you wouldn't be able to put romantic on that list but something about Jamie made him want to change that. And as she stared out at the field of luminescent butterflies with a bright smile on her face he couldn't help but feel accomplished.

"They're beautiful." She whispered, turning her gaze to him. Her smile widened when a butterfly landed on his shoulder. He glanced down at it before reaching for her hand. He laid his palm flat with hers on top of it and smiled when a butterfly landed on top of her hand. She gasped and impossibly, her smile widened. "Thank you Bell." She whispered, eyes flickering up to his.

His heart skipped a beat when she whispered the nickname and he could feel his breathing speed up as he held her gaze. His smile grew then and he found himself speechless as he stared back at her. Bellamy cleared his throat as he hesitantly lifted his hand and gently stroked her cheek with his thumb, cupping her cheek lightly. It was nothing for him to be with a few different girls in just a day, maybe two but this felt completely different for him. This foreign feeling of being nervous and unsure of himself was incredibly new to him and he wasn't sure exactly how to proceed. His eyes flickered down to her lips before meeting her eyes once again. He felt her cheek warm beneath his palm and placed his other hand on her waist, pulling her slightly closer.

Jamie took that last step with a timid smile, pressing her body up against his. She could feel the blush deepen as she pressed up against him and felt his solid, muscled body against hers. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her eyes drifting down to his lips in the process.

Bellamy's smile widened as he slowly leaned in, closing the gap between them inch by painfully slow inch. When they were mere millimeters apart, a low growl behind them caught their attention and they both pulled back to look for what had interrupted them. Two glowing eyes stared back at them and Bellamy slowly pulled her behind him, trying not to make any notable movements. Her heart was pounding erratically against his back and she struggled to hold her breath, hoping the creature would just move on. Her arms were still around his waist and she tightened her hold on him in fear.

Bellamy moved his hand back slowly trying to retrieve the gun tucked into his pants but froze when the beast took a step forward and let out another low growl. He let out a quiet breath and nudged Jamie back a little bit, trying to distance them from the beast. His eyes scanned the surrounding area hoping to find a weapon they could get a hold of. Nothing, there was nothing that would be able to hurt this thing. He glanced back at Jamie when he felt her hand shifting to pull out the gun. Her hand trailed lightly down his lower abdomen and around his side and if not for the circumstances he would find the light touches extremely sexy. His breath caught in his throat when the beast let out a loud, vicious growl, taking another intimidating step towards them.

Now, the thing was out in the open and it seemed much, much larger than could be possible. It was just as tall as Bellamy if not taller and looked really stocky and strong. His eyes widened as the thing stared back at them with hungry eyes. It would take nothing for it to kill them both right here. He shifted so Jamie was completely hidden behind him and tensed slightly when he felt her hands crawl up his back, one holding the gun. He could feel her trembling body pressed against his and her hot breath hit his neck, sending chills through his body. If only she knew the effect she had on him, even when they were seconds from death.

Her free hand slid up his back slowly, moving to cover his ear while the other she positioned just over his shoulder blade to shoot the beast. "On three." She whispered, tickling his ear with her breath. His hand reached back and gripped her hip and he slowly inched his head away from the pistol.

She tapped on his neck with her thumb, the signal. Once. Twice. Three times and then a deafening boom echoed from right over his shoulder. He jumped back at the force of the shot, his chest heaving as he watched the beast drop. Perfect shot.

Bellamy quickly turned to her to see her holding the pistol in front of her with a trembling hand. Her face was void of emotion and her entire body was shaking. He paused a moment before she let go of the gun, sending it to the ground as she stood in shock, staring at the carcass of the beast. He took the few steps it took to reach her and easily pulled her into him, wrapping his arms around her tightly. He could feel her heart pounding at an alarming rate while her arms glided around his neck. She buried her face in his chest and let out the breath she had been holding. One arm held her into him while his other moved up and he grasped the back of her head with his hand. "You're okay, you're okay." He whispered, hoping to calm her down. Her chest heaved up and down rapidly against his as she struggled to catch her breath. "It's okay now."

Jamie whimpered lightly before finally sucking in a sharp breath. He held her for a few silent minutes, until she pulled back. "Thank...thank you." She managed to get out, having never been that close to death before. The corner of his lip curled up and he nodded, his hand moving up to cup her cheek once more. "Are you okay?"

She nodded in reply before her eyes shifted to the beast. "We can feed the camp for a month now."

He let out a quiet, nervous laugh before nodding in agreement. "We'll have to have the camp come get it though."

Bellamy separated from her completely and made his way over to the large beast. He stared at it a moment before looking back at her, noticing she hadn't moved.

"Can we go back to camp? Please?"

Bellamy nodded and they quickly climbed through the shrubbery and headed back into camp. As soon as they crossed the threshold of the gate she turned to him, "I'm sorry, this isn't about you but I just...I just need to go lay down now. I'll see you in the morning." And with that she nearly ran to the dropship. He watched her with a heavy weight on his chest; this was not how the night was supposed to go.

Jamie pushed back the curtain to the dropship and quietly made her way to where she knew Monty and Jasper were asleep. She stepped over several bodies before spotting the messy heads of hair that were as familiar to her as the back of her hand.

The boys were both lying on their sides with about five feet between them so Jamie climbed in between them. She lay facing Jasper's back with Monty facing hers. She placed her hand on Jasper's shoulder and gently shook him awake. He rolled over and his brow creased in worry when he saw the distress in her features. "Jamie, what's wrong?" He whispered hoarsely. He leaned up on an elbow, yawning as he spoke.

She felt the boy beside her stir and a moment later Monty crawled closer to her. "What happened?" He mumbled in her ear, leaning up on his elbow to look down at her with sleep crusted eyes.

"Bellamy wanted to show me this beautiful field of butterflies and it was absolutely breath taking until the giant cat beast thing came out of the woods and looked like it wanted to eat us." She replied in one shaky breath. Both boys glanced up at each other before looking back down on her.

"What happened? Is he okay?" Monty asked, concern furrowing his brow.

"He's fine, but I just...I...I've never been that close to death. It was the most terrifying thing to ever happen to me." Her voice broke on the last word and both boys frowned.

Jasper shifted closer to her, leaning down to be closer. "Did he kill it?"

Her eyes flickered up to his and she smiled a broken smile. "I did."

"What?" Monty's whisper yelled to her, suddenly angry that Bellamy didn't take care of it, take care of her.

"He tried to pull the gun out but the thing came closer and growled at us. I was closer to it so I shot it. There wasn't another option." Tears slowly trailed down her cheeks and Jasper frowned, wiping them away. "It was taller than Bellamy. This world is so much scarier than I thought it'd be." She whispered, eyes staring up at nothing.

"You want to stay here with us tonight?" Monty asked her, assuming that's why she had come to them. When she was younger they would have sleep overs and she'd sleep between them to keep her nightmares away. Nothing was ever said about it since they all considered themselves to be siblings. They truly were her brothers that she would die for and they'd both do anything for her, for their sister.

She turned slightly so she was laying on her back and nodded up at Monty. "Can I please? I don't want to leave Octavia in the tent by herself though."

Monty grinned and looked up at Jasper. "Jasper would be happy to go get her and we can all sleep beside each other if you want?"

Jasper's cheeks heated and he nervously looked down at Jamie.

"Please Jazz?" She whispered, her eyes begging him to get the girl she'd become close to.

He reluctantly climbed to his feet and went to retrieve Octavia while Jamie rolled back on her side so she'd be facing the younger Blake when she came in.

An hour later Jamie was still wide awake on her back again staring up at the ceiling of the dropship. "Why were you guys even out there?"

She turned to see Octavia watching her closely with an arched brow.

Jamie smiled softly at the girl, turning on her side so she'd be face to face with her. "Bell wanted to show me the butterflies."

A bright grin split Octavia's face and her cheeks reddened. "Since when do you call him Bell?"

A hot blush spread through Jamie's face and she quickly averted her eyes from the searching gaze of the younger Blake. "We've connected a little bit over the past few days. I don't know... it's nice." She shrugged before looking back up at Octavia.

There was a gasp before Octavia smacked Jamie's arm. "Holy crap you like him! You like my brother!"

Jamie's eyes widened and she quickly looked down once more. "No, no way. You're crazy. I barely know him!"

"And you still like him. That's so cute. We could totally be real sisters then!" The girl stuck her tongue out when Jamie smacked her arm and they both started laughing.

"I almost kissed him." Jamie whispered, barely audible.

Octavia's eyes widened and she leaned up eagerly. "You did not!"

Jamie blushed and shrugged. "I don't know what happens now though. I completely freaked out afterwards. What if he...what if he isn't interested now?"

Octavia rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Shut up. He totally likes you and he normally isn't that kind of person with girls. You know, the one to get attached."

Jamie arched a brow at the girl and Octavia sighed. "He's different Jamie, he doesn't do relationships."

"What happened to him?" Jamie whispered, the curiosity getting the best of her. She knew it wasn't right to talk about Bellamy's love life with Octavia but now she just had to know what happened to him.

She shifted nervously in her spot before glancing around the group of sleeping delinquents. "It was our mother. He saw what she went through raising me on her own and she always told him that love makes you weak and vulnerable. You're better on your own. And he was so young of course he believed it. He practically raised me and lost his childhood because of it but...well I'm not one to talk about lost childhoods."

Jamie glanced at the girl and nodded. "It's amazing how different all of our childhoods were."

"Do you remember your father at all? The one who was like me?"

Jamie exhaled slowly before looking at the girl. "He um...he was floated after my mother got pregnant. I think they got caught because of me or he would have still been in hiding."

"Jamie, that wasn't your fault. Your father is the one that hooked up with your mother, it's not like you could help being born." Her face paled as she said it and she quickly averted her gaze.

Jamie placed her hand on Octavia's shoulder and scooted closer to her. "Just like it wasn't your fault for being born."

"My mother got floated for that. I never should have gone to that stupid dance." She groaned and dropped her head in her hands.

"That stupid dance was the first time you were able to actually live. That wasn't your fault."

Octavia shrugged and frowned at the girl trying to cheer her up. "Bellamy is the one who told me to go. I knew we shouldn't have but he said we'd be okay. He said it would work out and no one would even know."

"He was trying to give you a chance to have fun for once. I get that." Jamie shrugged and looked at Octavia. "Wait, he's the one who got you to go so...he's the one who feels responsible." She quietly mumbled the last part, eyes widening in horror.

"He's the one that got our mother floated." Octavia added.

"No, Tay, the Ark got your mother floated. All Bell did was give you the chance to have fun. It's not his fault and it's not yours but that does explain a lot."

The younger Blake arched a brow at her. "You think he blames himself?"

Jamie nodded solemnly, looking at the ground. "Yes. You should try being a bit nicer to him you know? He's just looking out for you."

Octavia groaned again and pushed against Jamie with her shoulder. "Never mind I don't like that you like him because you're supposed to be on my side."

The girls laughed quietly again, leaning into each other.

After a few moments of silence Octavia scooted closer to Jamie. "What did the beast look like?" Her voice wavered in fear and Jamie quickly reached out to lay a hand on Octavia's arm.

"You don't have to worry about it. We won't let anything hurt you." She paused before grinning at Octavia. "Plus I'm pretty sure you'll see it when they try to make it for dinner one night."

She smiled before moving to lay on Jamie's arm. "Thanks Jay. I know we haven't known each other long but I love you. You're the best sister I could have asked for and you actually make this hell hole a nice place to be."

Jamie smiled softly and rested her head on top of Octavia's. "That means a lot. Thank you. And Tay?"

"Hm?" The girl sleepily replied, eyes closed.

"I love you too."
