Chapter Nineteen: Running is for Cowards
They ran outside as the other delinquents shouted out around them in panic.
"Someone's coming!"
"Get ready!"
"Stay together!"
Jamie grabbed Bellamy's hand and he glanced down at her as they made their way towards the gate together. She tried to keep her gaze focused ahead of them and not on the red lines around Bellamy's throat but her eyes kept wandering.
They stopped when they reached the crowd in front of the gate and a few moments of silence passed throughout the large group. Jamie used the time to gently brush her fingers over the red lines on his neck and he tensed up beneath her touch. She started to pull away but he quickly turned towards her. "It's okay. I'm fine now." He mumbled to her with a soft smile. He caught her hand before she could move and kissed one of her knuckles, lightly brushing his lips across the skin. He looked down at her wrists again and she smiled faintly. "It's okay."
He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her into his side, placing a light kiss on the top of her head. They stared at each other a few seconds until one of the boys on watch broke the silence.
"Wait! Hold your fire!" One of the delinquents on the wall yelled out. "It's Clarke and Finn! Open the gate!"
"Get it! Get the gate!"
"Move it!"
"Clarke and Finn!"
"They're back!"
The gate opened and Clarke ran in followed by Finn. Jamie ran to the girl and threw her arms around her, pulling her in for a tight hug. "Thank God you're back."
Clarke pulled back and her hands held Jamie's face. "I thought you were dead." She mumbled, her voice cracking. Both girls' eyes teared up and they hugged again, relief flooding through them both.
Finn approached the two and pulled Jamie into his arms and out of Clarke's. "So glad you're okay Spunky. We were really worried about you." He pulled back slightly to look at her and a light smile appeared on his face.
"Well, it's good to know you're still alive and kicking too Space Walker." She grinned up at him causing his smile to widen.
Clarke looked around then, eyes landing on Bellamy. "We heard an explosion, what happened?" Her eyes lingered on the wounds around his neck and she knew her expression was one of horror.
"Murphy happened." Bellamy replied, stepping closer to Jamie as Finn released her. He placed his hand lightly on her back almost needing the contact from her after the long day they had.
Jasper pushed his way to Clarke and hugged her tightly. "Thank God! Where have you been? Where's Monty?"
Clarke turned to Jamie with wide eyes. "Monty's gone?"
"Clarke, we need to leave now. All of us do. There's an army of grounders unlike anything we've ever seen coming for us right now. We need to pack what we can and run." Finn interrupted, his voice hitching in panic.
"Like hell we do. We knew this was coming." Bellamy replied.
Jamie turned to Jasper and they held each other's gaze before Jamie moved forward, out of Bellamy's reach, and hugged Jasper tightly. She wrapped her arms around him and held him to her as he wrapped his arms around her waist, dropping his head on her shoulder. "He's gone." Jasper mumbled brokenly. His eyes teared up as their last hope of Monty being returned safely vanished. One of her hands twisted in his hair in a soothing manner, something he enjoyed since he was younger. Instead of relaxing under her touch though she could feel the slight tremor of his body indicating that he had started lightly crying.
"Shhh. It'll be okay. We'll find him." Jamie whispered as the others continued talking. She had often consoled the boy when they were kids and he was upset however Monty was always with them. Monty was the one that kept them both calm and hopeful, even in the darkest times. Jamie may have been like a mother to Jasper but she always had Monty to fall back on. Jamie placed a light kiss to Jasper's head, continuing to brush her fingers through his hair. It hurt her to see him so upset, she hurt losing Monty too, but she knew they needed to be strong to survive this and find him. "I'll do everything it takes to get him back okay, Jazzy?"
He sniffled into her shoulder and nodded against her, his grip around her tightening as he took in staggering breaths.
Bellamy watched their interaction a moment before Octavia's voice regained his attention.
"Bell, we're not prepared." Octavia's voice was soft as she placed a comforting hand on Jasper's back, looking at her brother.
"And they're not here yet. We still have time to get ready. Besides, where would we go? Where would be safer than behind these walls?" Bellamy's voice was still hoarse from the incident with Murphy and as Jamie pulled away from Jasper, she pulled the boy into her side as they watched Bellamy talk. Jasper trembled beside her and she moved her arm around his shoulder and held him against her. His head dropped to her shoulder and he moved his arm down to wrap around her waist, side hugging her.
While she comforted Jasper her eyes remained on Bellamy as he spoke. She watched the fire in Bellamy's eyes as he looked around the group. And the group loved what he was saying.
"There's an ocean to the east. People there will help us." Finn replied, breaking the vibe Bellamy had created.
Octavia stepped closer to Finn with a small smile. "You saw Lincoln."
Finn nodded to her. "Yeah."
"You expect us to trust a grounder with this? This is our home now. We built this from nothing with our bare hands! Our dead are buried behind that wall in this ground!" Bellamy pointed to one of the walls as his voice carried over the camp. He had gained everyone's attention with the passion in his words. "Our ground! The grounders think they can take that away. They think that because we came from the sky, we don't belong here. But they've yet to realize one very important fact; we are on the ground now, and that means we are grounders!"
Jamie's eyes sparked with passion as she watched Bellamy speak and she quickly looked around the group to see the same spark in everyone else as they watched their leader. The crowd cheered for him when he finished talking and several delinquents yelled out.
"Yeah!"
"Grounders with guns!"
"Damn right! I say let 'em come!" Bellamy added, nodding to the group surrounding them.
Clarke stepped up beside Bellamy with a nod. "Bellamy's right. If we leave, we may never find a place as safe as this. And God knows, in this world, we could be faced with something even worse tomorrow. But that doesn't change the simple fact that if we stay here, we will die tonight. So pack your things. Just take what you can carry, now."
The group dispersed and Jamie found her eyes trained on Bellamy. His sad demeanor made him appear like a little puppy that she longed to hug until he was happy again. She quickly scanned his body for any other signs of injury and she lingered on his neck where Murphy had strung him up. Rage flooded through her as she thought about chasing after the boy and ending his life for everything he did to Bellamy.
As if feeling her stare on him Bellamy looked up at her and shifted his body towards her. A rush of emotions surged through her as she stared at him and the most prominent one terrified her. Love. After thinking about how very close she had come to losing him, she realized why she couldn't stand the thought of living in a world without Bellamy Blake. She was in love. Her first love. And as he held her gaze she couldn't help but wonder if that was love in his eyes she was seeing as well. The corner of his mouth lifted as he watched her, his own eyes scanning her body as she did the same to him.
Her eyes wandered once again and her breath hitched in her throat as she looked at him. He really was stunning. There was a sheen of sweat covering his body, causing his shirt to stick to him and become nearly see through. Anyone with eyes would want to appreciate this man. His dark curls stuck to his damp skin and the freckles that splattered across his face only made him more appealing.
Without further thought she went to him and ended up meeting him in the middle as he seemed just as eager to reach her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, careful to avoid his wounds, pulling herself flush against him. He hugged her back instantly, dropping his head down to her shoulder and holding her tight against his body.
"I'm so glad you're okay." She whispered to him with a hoarse voice, all of her emotions wreaking havoc on her.
He smiled lightly and nodded against her. "Me too. I'm not sure I could handle watching Murphy touch you and talk about taking you with him for a second longer."
Her cheeks heated against his and she found a smile spreading onto her face. One of her hands grabbed a few curls at the nape of his neck as his hands rubbed her back. She pressed a light kiss against his neck where there was an angry red line from the rope. He turned towards her a little bit, bringing her even closer. His nose brushed against her neck and his warm breath hit the soft spot at the base of her throat, sending chills through her body. Her knees nearly gave out and she tightened her hold on him to remain upright.
Bellamy seemed just as flustered as she was as his heart hammered in his chest, pressed up against hers. His olive skin tone was darker in a blush and she smiled lightly at seeing the effect she had on him. As if remembering something completely unrelated to their passionate embrace, Bellamy's body tensed and he ran a hand through her hair, holding her head as he spoke quietly.
"We will find Monty. I promise." Bellamy murmured, voice breaking on the promise.
She smiled lightly, falling in love with this boy even more.
"Raven!"
"Raven!"
"Raven's here!"
They pulled apart as the group started yelling again to find Raven limping into camp the way Murphy ran out. Bellamy and Jamie ran to her, hand in hand, and she fell just as they reached her. Bellamy scooped her into his arms to prevent her from dropping and Jamie moved in close to them.
"Get her onto the dropship." Jamie told him, moving a hand to Raven's pale face. "Raven, stay with me. Okay?"
The mechanic smiled softly as she grabbed Jamie's hand. "Always so bossy." She winced in pain but as her eyes met Jamie's she tried to speak again. "Mur...Murph...it was Murphy."
Jamie nodded at her as Bellamy carried her into the dropship and placed her on the table they had fixed everyone else on. Clarke and Finn ran into the dropship and Bellamy turned towards them. "Murphy shot her."
Clarke nodded and started helping Jamie cut the clothes around Raven's wound. Finn hovered over Jamie's shoulder, watching her work quietly.
"Clarke, leaving here is a mistake."
She shook her head at Bellamy. "The decision's been made."
"Crowds make bad decisions. Just ask Murphy. Leaders do what they think is right." Bellamy continued.
Clarke shook her head and leaned against the table, making eye contact with him. "I am."
He looked up at Jamie but she was focused on helping Raven. He continued talking to Clarke and Finn then as Jamie blocked them out, all of her attention on the mechanic. Finn was holding Raven's hand as Jamie got what she needed to cauterize the wound.
A few minutes later Jamie leaned back and took a deep breath, smiling at the girl on the table. "Okay, that should stop the external bleeding."
Raven's screams had scared off anything around camp for the moment but everyone outside remained ready for the oncoming war.
"I don't understand. How did Murphy get a gun?" Finn asked, looking at Bellamy.
Bellamy sighed and ran a hand down his face. "Long story."
Raven's breathing was shallow and she squeezed Finn's hand before talking. "We got lucky. If Murphy hit the fuel tank instead of me, we'd all be dead."
Clarke looked up at her then and took a step forward. "Wait, there's rocket fuel down there? Enough to build a bomb?"
Raven smirked and she looked up at Jamie. "Enough to build a hundred bombs if we had any gunpowder left."
"Let's get back to the reapers. Maybe they'll help us. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?" Bellamy asked, looking between Clarke and Finn. He was holding Lincoln's book in his hand as he spoke and Jamie leaned forward to look at the page he was on.
Clarke immediately started shaking her head. "Not this enemy. We saw them, trust me. That's not an option."
"Maybe we should think about the bombs. We may not have gunpowder but I'm sure there's some way we can use the rocket fuel." Jamie said, cleaning up around Raven's wound. She looked up when no one said anything and arched a brow at the mechanic. "Thoughts?"
Raven shrugged and shook her head. "No, I don't know what else we could do."
Finn sighed and shook his head, frustrated. "There's no time for this. Can she walk or not?"
"No." Jamie replied with an apologetic expression. "We'll have to carry her." Clarke added.
"Like hell you will. I'm good to go." Raven replied with a scowl, trying to get off the table.
"Hey, listen to me." Jamie stepped into Raven's line of sight with a pointed stare and pushed the girl back down. "That bullet is still inside you. If by some miracle there's no internal bleeding, it might hold until we get somewhere safe. But you are not walking there. Is that clear?"
Raven sighed but nodded in response to her friend. "Yes." She grumbled, narrowing her eyes at Jamie.
"I'll get the stretcher." Finn said, glancing up at Jamie.
"Can't run away fast enough, huh? Real brave." Bellamy muttered, narrowing his eyes at Finn.
"Dying in a fight you can't win isn't brave, Bellamy. It's stupid." Finn replied, taking a step towards Bellamy and narrowing his own eyes.
Bellamy shook his head. "Spoken like every coward who's ever run from a fight."
Jamie stepped in between them and laid a hand lightly on Bellamy's chest. "Enough." She gave him a warning glare and he nodded with reluctance as Clarke added, "it's time to go."
"If they follow? It's a one hundred and twenty mile walk to the ocean." Bellamy stated.
Finn threw his hands in the air, frustrated. "Look, we're wasting time! If he wants to stay, he can stay!"
Jamie turned and narrowed her eyes at him, fed up with his behavior. "We are not leaving him Space Walker! Just give us a minute to sort this out."
Finn looked at the blonde before quickly turning and walking out of the dropship, leaving them all to stare after him.
"Jeez what crawled up his ass?" Jamie muttered earning a smirk from Raven.
Clarke watched him go before turning to Bellamy. "We can't do this without you, Bellamy. And I know Jamie won't come if you don't."
Bellamy glanced down at Jamie before his gaze shifted back up to Clarke. "What do you want me to say Clarke? This isn't the right decision."
Jamie's hand was still on Bellamy's chest as she watched her cousin's expression change.
"I want you to say that you're with us! Those kids out there, they listen to you. Both of you." Her eyes flickered in between Bellamy and Jamie with a plea but Bellamy just shrugged. "They're lining up to go. They listen to you more."
"I gave them an easy choice! Five minutes ago they were willing to fight and die for you. You inspire them. And I'm afraid we're gonna need that again before this day is through." Clarke's eyes focused on Bellamy's, begging him to reconsider. Finally, he broke under her gaze and he looked down at Jamie. She arched a brow at him and shrugged before leaning closer to him and saying, "I'm with you."
He held her gaze a moment longer before looking up at Clarke and nodding. "Okay, let's go." He mumbled, admitting defeat.
Bellamy retreated from the dropship, hand grasping Jamie's as he moved. He drug her with him to his tent and she plopped down on his cot while he gathered a few things. She analyzed his posture and knew just how frustrated he was that no one but her seemed to be listening to him and she wished for a way to make things easier on him. Of all the leaders, in her opinion, Bellamy took things the hardest.
"This is a mistake, I know it is. We shouldn't leave here. The walls at least provide some safety and we can always fall back into the dropship." He mumbled. He remained focused on his task while he spoke. "Do you think we should leave?"
Jamie shrugged, watching him as he frantically grabbed things. Her eyes scanned the muscles in his arms and back as he moved and she couldn't help the blush that crept into her cheeks as she thought about how truly beautiful he was. "I honestly don't think it matters where we go. We've fought for survival ever since we landed and I don't see it changing. I also think that we won't survive the grounder attack if we stay but running could be just as dangerous. I mean if we stay they'll find a way in. We just...there's too many unknowns in this situation."
He nodded and turned to her, extending his hand to help pull her to her feet. She graciously accepted it and as he pulled her up she stumbled into him. His arm went around her to keep her steady and her hands went to his chest as they collided. His heart pounded rapidly beneath her hands and she couldn't help let her hands wander down his shirt, feeling his toned chest beneath her fingers. Both their breaths came out in quick gasps at the contact and it took a moment for Jamie to meet his gaze. His smoldering eyes were much darker than usual and she felt as if she were being pulled in by them, by him, just as she had outside. He stared back at her just as intently until finally something seemed to click in them and both suddenly pulled back, flustered.
Jamie's cheeks reddened deeply and she cleared her throat and turned to exit the tent. Bellamy grabbed her hand and she led the way to the tent she shared with Octavia. She only grabbed her bag off the floor before dragging him over to the tent Jasper shared with Monty. She shoved a few things in her bag, one being the picture of them and a few of Monty's things. She paused when she grabbed his favorite hoodie and Bellamy wrapped an arm around her waist. "Come on, we have to go." His voice was soft and Jamie could hear the remorse he felt for her in his tone.
Jamie's sad eyes met his and she nodded; grasping his hand tightly in her own while allowing him to pull her out of the tent and away from the painful reminder that her brother was still missing.
They walked out in the center of the camp and Bellamy grabbed a bucket of water to extinguish the flames of the fire. His hand squeezed Jamie's tightly as he dropped the bucket and his eyes lingered on the coals.
Jamie leaned into him, understanding the feeling of dread that she assumed he felt. She ran a hand across his back and he visibly relaxed under her touch, his eyes flickering up to meet hers. She smiled lightly at him and he returned it before tearing his gaze away from hers.
He took another look around camp and Jamie smiled up at him. "You did good here, Bell."
"Eighteen dead."
"Eighty two alive." Jamie replied, grabbing his chin and pulling him down to face her.
His eyes met hers and after a moment he nodded.
"We've talked about this, they thought we would all die remember? You did good." She told him again, smiling as she did. He smiled in return and nodded, pulling her into his side as they followed the group of delinquents out of camp.
