Chapter Fourteen: Encountering the Grounders

Twenty minutes later they were trekking through the woods with twelve other delinquents. Jamie walked directly behind Bellamy, eyes taking in their surroundings. They had decided to remain close to camp considering the added danger from the grounders and Jamie had long decided that she wouldn't ever be taken hostage again. The only animals they were able to find however were small birds that wouldn't even properly feed one person.

Jamie's eyes flickered around curiously wondering why the woods were so silent. She listened closely for any changes around them, thankful everyone in their hunting party knew how to walk quietly. Her eyes scanned the ground and she froze when she saw a broken arrowhead. "Bell?" She whispered, her hand grabbing the back of his coat to stop him. He stopped immediately and flipped towards her with an arched eyebrow and she held up the arrowhead in reply.

"Grounders?"

She nodded to him then something caught her eye right over his shoulder. She didn't hesitate to push him to the ground, covering his body with her own, as an arrow flew through the air right where Bellamy was just standing. His eyes widened and he quickly rolled them over so she lay beneath him with her hands pressed up against his chest. He leaned on his elbows to keep his weight mostly off of her while he looked around for the source of the arrow. Her breath caught in her throat as she realized she just saved him, that she could have lost him.

Her hands gripped his coat while her eyes scanned the area, stopping on a tree with the camouflaged grounder. She inhaled a sharp breath before pulling Bellamy closer to her. His eyes drifted down to hers and she subtly tried to gesture to the tree. As he stared down at her his warm breath hit her face and made her heart speed up. Her hands still gripped his coat tightly as her eyes studied his chocolate colored ones. She could see the panic and fear in his gaze but there was also something else...She didn't have time to think about what else she saw in his gaze as more arrows rained down on them.

"We have to go." She said, crawling out from under Bellamy. She grabbed his hand and pulled him with her and they grabbed the others along the way. It was only a matter of minutes before the group was running back to camp. Jamie and Bellamy hung back a little bit to make sure everyone else made it back safely. Both kept their eyes focused on the trail in front of them while they listened intently to the silent woods they left behind.

When they got back to camp it was nearly dark and the party celebrating Unity Day was in full swing.

Clarke greeted them at the gate when they ran in with a grim smile. Neither mentioned the grounders and were finally feeling a bit relaxed once they were back inside the gate although they did come back empty handed.

"Hey, the comms are still dead. They haven't been up since the pageant." Clarke told them, glancing from one to the next.

"Best Unity Day ever." Bellamy replied with a grin.

Jamie snorted and shook her head lightly, lacing her fingers together nervously.

Clarke ignored his remark as she continued. "Do you really think now is a good time to be having a party? I mean, the grounder is still out there."

"Grounders." Jamie replied.

Bellamy nodded in agreement before adding, "by now he's made it home. He's probably putting together a lynch mob." He glanced behind them at the walls surrounding the place before returning his attention to Clarke. "Relax. I'll get security covered." He turned to Jamie then with a smile. "Why don't you guys go get a drink? You both look like you could use one."

Clarke laughed nervously and looped her arm through Jamie's. "I could use more than one."

"Then have more than one. The Exodus ship carrying your mother comes down here in a few days and after that the party's over. Have some fun while you still can. You both deserve it." He smiled at them and nodded towards the party.

"Yeah, okay." Clarke nodded in agreement as Jamie added, "so do you, by the way."

Bellamy's eyes met Jamie's and his smile returned. "I'll have my fun when the grounders come."

She arched a brow with a grin but before she could say anything Clarke started dragging her to the party. Jamie looked over her shoulder to see Bellamy's smile widen as he turned towards the gate.

Clarke took Jamie over to a table where they were tossing metal parts into cups on the table and Jamie's eyes immediately wandered around the camp in search of something more fun. She grinned when she found Monty, who was walking towards her with two cups in his hand. He handed one to her and they knocked them against each other with a smile.

"Happy Unity Day Birdie!" He threw an arm over her shoulder and pulled him into his side before looking down at the game before him. "Oh man, you should go. You're great at this game."

She blushed as everyone at the table looked at her. She shrugged and took her turn, making her piece into the furthest cup on the table instantly. Everyone at the table cheered for her as they all took a drink from their cups. One of the kids at the table tossed another metal piece to her and she repeated the action, making everyone at the table drink and cheer again.

"Jamie, you over here blowing people's minds?"

"You know it!" She replied to Jasper with a smile as another piece was slid to her.

"You're not gonna get this one." Clarke told her.

"Yes, I am."

"No. It's not happening." Clarke pushed her but Jamie easily shook her off as she rolled her eyes and shot again, making it again.

Everyone at the table hollered in laughter and applause as Clarke shook her head, chugging the next cup.

"What do you know? Her highness can actually party. I like it." One of the nearby boys said to Clarke with a grin.

"What are you gonna do when the guard comes down and commandeers Monty's still?"

The boy grinned and looked to Monty with a shrug. "Build another."

Clarke laughed and grabbed her own piece of metal, sliding her cup to Jamie, confident in her abilities. "You ready? Oh, no. Wait...I have done this before." Clarke mumbled, trying to get the piece to cooperate.

Finn walked up and stepped in between the girls. "Let's take a walk."

Clarke started to turn and Jamie chugged the cup as Finn paused. "You too Jamie."

Jamie followed him after grabbing another cup. "Did something happen?" Clarke asked him.

"I need you both to come with me but I can't tell you why okay?" He glanced between the two girls and Jamie instantly tensed.

"Finn, tell me why."

Finn grabbed both of their elbows and started pulling them to the gate. Jamie pulled free from his grasp and grabbed Clarke's arm. "No, not until you tell us."

"I set up a meeting with the grounders."

The girls exchanged a weary look before turning back to Finn.

"A meeting? I don't understand. With who?" Clarke asked as Jamie asked, "How?"

"I was just with the grounder that we had in the dropship. His name is Lincoln."

Jamie's eyes widened and her eyes quickly scanned the area for Octavia.

"Wait a second, he spoke to you?" Clarke asked, glancing at Jamie with an arched brow.

Finn sighed and quickly shook his head. "Not important."

"If we want to live in peace Finn, we can't live in peace with people who've done nothing but kill us."

Jamie shifted nervously in her spot before looking at them. "A group of them shot arrows at the hunting party today. Lincoln tell you that?"

Finn stepped closer to them with a plea in his eyes. "Can you think of a better way to stop the bloodshed?"

"Yeah, with the guns that the guard brings down." Jamie replied quickly. "Finn, you don't understand their ways. They will kill us. I've seen it."

He shook his head and grabbed Jamie's hand. "I understand what you've seen has changed your perspective but do you really want a war?"

She glanced at Clarke knowing that neither of them wanted a war. Especially with Lincoln's people.

"At this rate, that's what's coming. Look, I know it's a long shot. I do." Finn looked each girl in the eye before continuing. "But this is our world now and I think we can do better than the first time around." His gaze landed on Jamie as he spoke the next statement, "I trust him."

Her eyes widened and his narrowed just barely and she knew then that he must have caught Octavia with Lincoln and thus assumed Jamie knew about them too.

"I don't. But if we go we have to bring backup." Clarke replied, pulling Finn's gaze off of Jamie.

Finn immediately shook his head. "No, no way. We're not bringing guns. Those weren't the terms and if we're gonna do this we got to give it a fair shot."

"No way we're going without guns! They won't honor that part of the deal, there's no way!" Jamie stepped closer to Finn with an arch in her brow. "Do you have a death wish?"

"Jamie..." Clarke grabbed Jamie's arm and pulled her back. "Okay, I'll get my pack and we'll meet you at the gate."

Finn smiled lightly in victory, nodding to the girls. "Okay."

When he turned around Jamie flipped towards Clarke. "I know." Clarke replied not needing Jamie to say anything. She grabbed Jamie's arm and pulled her over to where Bellamy stood.

"Hey, we need to talk to you."

He looked up and grinned at the girls. "Are the princesses having fun yet?"

"I'm serious."

He snickered, nodding to Clarke to continue. "You always are so talk."

"Finn's set up a meeting with the grounders. We're leaving to go talk to them."

His eyes widened and he looked at Jamie briefly before turning back to Clarke. "Because you think that impaling people on spears and shooting at a hunting party is code for let's be friends? Have you lost your damn mind?" His voice raised as he spoke, getting angrier by the second.

Clarke shrugged, her grip tightening on Jamie. "I think it might be worth a shot. I mean, we do have to live with these people."

He looked at Jamie again and shook his head. "They'll probably gut you and string you both up as a warning."

"Well, that's why we're here. I need you to follow us, be our backup."

His eyes went back to Clarke and he arched a brow at her. "Finn know about this?"

"Finn doesn't need to know." Clarke turned to walk away, pulling Jamie with her.

Jamie paused a moment, meeting Bellamy's gaze. "Bring guns."

He nodded and turned to find backup as the girls headed to Clarke's tent to grab a few things.

They met Finn at the gate and started on their trek through the dark woods. After about half an hour in silence Clarke spoke up. "I'd love it if you were right about this but did you ever consider it might be a trap?"

He sighed and glanced over at her, watching as Jamie climbed over fallen trees on shaky legs. "Yup but since it's Unity Day I decided to have hope instead."

"You're putting a lot of faith in a guy who stuck a knife in you." Clarke stated.

Jamie groaned and shook her head. "This isn't about Lincoln, he isn't the one we can't trust."

They both turned to her and she picked up her pace, distancing herself from their inquisitive stares.

Jamie remained ahead of them the rest of the hike, eager to reach the meeting spot and make sure Octavia was okay. They reached the bridge and Jamie spotted the younger Blake, running to her. "This is too dangerous, you should have gone back to camp." She hugged Octavia tightly and watched as her eyes shifted to something behind Jamie.

"So that's how you set this up. You both helped him escape didn't you?" Clarke asked, looking at Finn. Finn shrugged with a soft smile. "I trust him Clarke."

Some horses appeared in the tree line, gaining everyone's attention. Jamie's eyes widened when she saw Anya on one of the horses and she quickly stepped in front of Octavia as Lincoln joined them. "Lincoln," Jamie turned to the grounder and pushed Octavia towards him. "No matter what happens you keep her safe."

He nodded at her and stepped forward as Clarke and Finn started walking towards Anya. "Only they go." Lincoln stated, gesturing to Clarke and Jamie.

"We'll be fine." Clarke told Finn, dismissing him as soon as he started to object.

She grabbed Jamie's hand and pulled her nervous cousin forward. "You ready Jamie?"

Jamie glanced over to the tree line behind them and spotted Bellamy. He had his gun trained on Anya and she felt confident they wouldn't be in danger with him ready and waiting. He nodded up to her and she nodded to Clarke, allowing herself to be pulled closer to Anya.

"Hey, it's time to do better." Finn told them before the girls walked across the bridge.

"Jamie." Anya nodded to her, a glint in her eye, not waiting for Jamie's reply as she looked at Clarke. "Your name is Clarke?"

"Yes." Clarke's voice was strong even though her hand trembled in Jamie's.

"I'm Anya. I'm sure you already know that though." Anya's eyes met Jamie's and a smug smirk appeared on her face.

"I think we got off to a rough start but we want to find a way to live together in peace." Clarke talked quickly, tightening her hold on Jamie's hand.

Anya nodded with a scowl on her face. "I understand. You started a war that you don't know how to end."

Jamie's mouth dropped and she shook her head. "We didn't start anything! You attacked us and kidnapped me for no reason!"

Anya grimaced and arched an angry brow at Jamie. "No reason? The missiles you launched burned a village to the ground!"

"Missiles?" Jamie looked at Clarke but the blonde was already replying. "The flares? No, that was a signal meant for our families! We had no idea..."

"You're invaders. Your ship landed in our territory." Anya cut Clarke off, glaring as she did.

"We didn't know anyone was here. We thought the ground was uninhabited."

Anya scoffed and shook her head subtly. "You knew we were here when you sent an armed raiding party to capture one of us and torture him. These are all acts of war!"

"You kidnapped two of ours before we did that!" Jamie nearly yelled. Clarke pulled her back and stepped closer to Anya. "I see your point but that's why we need to put an end to all of this." Clarke's voice was soft as she spoke and her arm extended to keep Jamie back.

"Lincoln said there are more of you coming down, warriors." Anya replied, an arch in her brow as she stared at Jamie.

"The guard, yes."

Clarke raised her hand slightly, drawing Anya's attention to her and away from Jamie. "But there'll also be farmers, doctors, engineers. We can help each other if we're not at war."

"Can you promise that these new arrivals won't attack us? That they'll respect the terms you and I agree on?"

Clarke glanced at Jamie before nodding. "I can promise that we'll do everything we can to convince them to honor the terms that we set."

"Why would I agree to an alliance that your people can break the moment they get here?"

Something in one of the nearby trees caught Jamie's attention then and she gasped when she saw a grounder with an arrow drawn and ready to fire. She grabbed Clarke's arm and pulled the girl back behind her as Clarke replied to Anya. "If you fire the first shot those people coming down won't bother negotiating. With our technology, they will wipe you out." Clarke glanced at Jamie to see what had the girl alarmed to notice the blonde's eyes shifting from tree to tree.

"If you wanted to negotiate then why are there armed grounders hiding in the trees?" Jamie spat out, backing away from Anya slowly.

They all turned when Jasper burst from the trees. "Jamie! Clarke! Run! Run!"

There were gun shots and arrows started raining down on them. Jamie pushed Clarke back towards Finn, shielding Clarke's body with her own. Clarke stumbled as they started running so Jamie wrapped an arm around her and tried to help her get off the bridge.

"Jamie, Clarke, get down!" Bellamy yelled out, taking his own shots.

Jamie watched with wide eyes as an arrow got Lincoln in the chest. "Oh my God! Lincoln, you've been hit!" Octavia gasped and went to reach for him but he pushed her back behind him once more. Finn ran forward and grabbed Clarke, pausing to wait for Jamie as the blonde ran to Lincoln. He reached an arm out for Jamie, panic in his eyes. "Come on Jamie!"

Jamie pulled the arrow out of Lincoln as he pushed her behind him with Octavia. "Run! Don't stop until you get behind your walls!" He looked at Finn and pushed both girls towards him. "Go! Take them!"

"Lincoln, no!" Octavia called out as Jamie grabbed her arm and pulled her along with her. Octavia craned her head to try to keep an eye on Lincoln but wasn't able to as Jamie pulled her around a corner to reach the trees. They ran as fast as they could from the bridge, through the trees and nearly collided with Bellamy as he raced to reach them.

"Go! Go!" He nodded to them to run ahead of him and he ran directly behind them, watching as Jamie's grip tightened on Octavia.

"No! Jamie we have to go back and see if he's okay!" The younger Blake cried out, tears welling in her eyes.

Jamie glanced down at her and shook her head as she pulled Octavia even closer to her, her arm tight around Octavia's waist. "No, he's fine just keep running!"

They all stumbled through the woods together, running as fast as they could back to camp. Jamie's legs started to bother her after the long day but she forced herself to keep going. Bellamy ran right behind her, waiting and ready to catch her if she fell since he could see how shaky her legs were now.

When they finally cleared the gate they all gathered in a circle and Jamie draped an arm around Octavia for support while the younger girl leaned into Jamie, needing a different kind of support.

"You got anything to say?" Clarke asked Finn as everyone tried to catch their breath.

Finn nodded angrily, glancing at Bellamy as he replied. "Yeah! I told you no guns!"

"And we told you we couldn't trust the grounders!" Jamie replied with Clarke adding, "We were right!"

Raven turned to Finn with an arch in her brow. "Why didn't you tell me what you were up to?"

"I tried but you were too busy making bullets for your gun."

"You're lucky she brought that! They came there to kill you, Finn!" Bellamy told Finn, taking a step towards the angry boy.

"You don't know that! Jasper fired the first shot!" Finn raised his hands in frustration as Jasper's mouth dropped.

"Finn, you don't know how these people are! You don't understand what we're up against! The guns saved us! Jasper firing the first shot didn't start anything!" Jamie yelled out, chest heaving in exertion. After the long day she had she just wanted to collapse on her cot.

"You ruined everything!" Octavia suddenly yelled at Jasper, pushing her way through the group. Jasper shook his head before shouting out, "I saved you! You're welcome!" He stomped after her then as Finn looked between Clarke and Jamie with a hurt expression.

"You didn't have to trust the grounders. You just had to trust me." He turned and walked off with Raven following.

Bellamy looked at Clarke and ran his hand down his face. "Like I said, best Unity Day ever."

Jamie shifted closer to her cousin and Clarke dropped her head on Jamie's shoulder. "It'll be okay." She mumbled to Clarke as Clarke wrapped an arm around Jamie's waist, watching Finn stomp away.

A flash in the sky caught their attention and they all looked up. Bellamy hovered over Jamie's left shoulder while Clarke was draped on her right side as they watched the ship fly through the sky.

"The Exodus ship? Your mom's early." Bellamy mumbled quietly.

"Wait. Too fast." Clarke said, grabbing Jamie's hand as the ship continued towards the Earth.

Clarke stumbled back into Jamie with wide, fearful eyes.

Jamie's breaths came in short gasps as she clung to Clarke. "No parachute?"

Clarke gasped beside her, tears welled in her eyes. "Something's wrong."

The ship crashed on the other side of the mountain, releasing a giant mushroom cloud from the explosion. Clarke sank to the ground, taking Jamie with her and tears rolled down her cheeks. Jamie's arms wrapped around Clarke tightly and her head rested against Clarke's as they both stared blankly at where the ship crashed, mouths open in shock.

Clarke let out quiet sobs, trembling in Jamie's arms, as Jamie just stared at the smoky sky with wide eyes. All she could think was that she never made up with their mother. Abby died thinking Jamie hated her for betraying their father and now it was too late...all Abby wanted was one conversation to explain why she did what she did and Jamie hadn't even given her that.

"Jamie."

Her eyes remained focused on the black sky, hoping for some kind of miracle, praying for anything.

"Jamie."

She vaguely heard his voice trying to pull her from the trance she was in but she still couldn't escape the fact...her mother was gone. She no longer had a living parent. And no one would be coming down to help them now.

"Jamie!"

Her eyes finally pulled away from the sky and landed on Bellamy. She hadn't realized that he was so close to her before, his hand on her shoulder, shaking her. He watched her closely as Clarke continued to sob in her arms. She could tell he wanted to say something, needed to try to help in any way but he just didn't have words. His lips were slightly parted and his breathing was shallow as her teary eyes focused on his. She found his gaze comforting even though no words passed between them and her body started relaxing as she pulled Clarke closer to her, her eyes still on Bellamy's. She blinked back the tears in her eyes and finally tore her gaze off of Bellamy and down to the sobbing girl in her arms. "Clarke." She mumbled, her voice cracking.

Jamie brushed the hair from Clarke's face as tears started trailing down her own cheeks. "Come on." Her voice cracked again as she became overcome with emotion. She wedged her arm under Clarke's and pulled Clarke's arm around her shoulder. "Let's go." She tried again as Clarke buried her face in Jamie's shoulder. Without Clarke helping her both girls were just huddled on the ground so Jamie turned to Bellamy with a silent plea in her eyes. He nodded and moved to Clarke's other side, pulling her arm over his shoulder and lifting her completely off the ground. Clarke's free arm tightened around Jamie and she let out another muffled sob.

Without question Bellamy helped Clarke back to her tent with Jamie sucked into Clarke's other side. When they reached her tent Bellamy helped guide her to her cot while Jamie detached herself from Clarke's grip. Her teary eyes moved to Bellamy and she nodded her thanks before turning back to Clarke.

"Hey, if you need anything I'll be around."

She nodded at him again before pausing and looking back up at him. "Can you let Tay know I'm in here?"

He nodded and watched as she crumpled to Clarke's cot and wrapped her arms around their usually strong camp leader. They both appeared so fragile, so broken in this moment that it ate at Bellamy's heart. His own eyes teared up at seeing them in so much pain that he quickly shook his head, cleared his throat, and retreated from the tent.
