Chapter Four: Bad Case of Attitude
An hour after Jasper woke up, Jamie was sitting by the fire with Octavia. The two spoke quietly to one another not paying attention to anyone around them. Usually their conversations were a bit more uplifting however after losing Atom the younger Blake was struggling to stay optimistic. Jamie was doing her best to keep Octavia happy, attempting to console her of her recent loss when someone interrupted their conversation.
"Hello, ladies."
Both looked up as Murphy sat down right next to Jamie. He grinned at her and his eyes quickly raked up and down her body. "What brings you out here?"
"Our legs." Jamie replied sarcastically, turning her attention back to Octavia.
He let out a sharp laugh and moved closer to Jamie. "I never realized you were so funny."
She sighed before turning back to him. "What do you want Murphy?"
He shook his head like he was confused by what she meant. "What do you mean?"
"Well, it's not like we've ever been particularly close and you did just try to kill my best friend so...again, what do you want?" Her eyes narrowed at him and she didn't back down as his gaze darkened.
He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and smiled at her. "I am sorry about that but his moaning was killing us. I was just trying to do what was best for the morale of the group."
Octavia shifted away from Jamie, glancing around nervously. Her eyes landed on Bellamy as he spoke to a few others by his tent. He was already watching the interaction with curious eyes.
"Oh, well if killing him was in the best interest of the group." She rolled her eyes at him before pushing him off of the log. "Go away Murphy."
Octavia chuckled lightly from beside her, proud of the blonde, as Murphy climbed to his feet. "I thought you gave second chances Jaymes." He sneered as he emphasized her name with a slight glare.
"What, you think you can scare me?" She asked, rising to her feet to look him square in the eye. "I'll ask again. What do you want?" Her arms crossed over her chest and she arched a brow at him, moving to completely shield Octavia from the unpredictable boy.
Octavia stood up, fidgeting nervously behind her. She didn't like the way this conversation was going. She started bouncing on her heels and her eyes remained on Murphy as she worried about what he would do.
He snickered and his gaze flickered down to Jamie's lips before meeting her eyes once more. "You." He grabbed her chin and pulled her face to his, crashing his lips against hers.
Her eyes widened and she immediately pushed him away from her, slapping him in the process. "How dare you force yourself on me." Her voice was quiet and waivered dangerously as Octavia started pulling her away from him. Before Octavia could yell for Bellamy, Monty ran to the trio and forced himself in between Murphy and Jamie. "You need to leave, now." Monty pushed Murphy further away from Jamie to make his point.
Murphy grinned at Monty before his gaze floated over Monty's shoulder. His eyes stared daggers at the blonde but he smirked when he realized he got to her. "I'll see you again Jaymes."
Octavia's hands were each holding Jamie's arms, holding her back from doing anything else to the boy. "Are you alright?" She asked, releasing Jamie.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She mumbled to Octavia before turning to Monty.
Monty flipped around to her with a concerned gaze and an arch in his brow.
"Thank you." Jamie hugged Monty tightly. She released him and patted his arm before glancing at Octavia. "We're just going to go to bed now. I'll see you in the morning."
Octavia looped her arm through Jamie's, concern settling in her stomach for the blonde, and pulled her closer to her as they turned to head back to their tent. Jamie rested her head against Octavia's as they walked, finding comfort in the girl that was quickly becoming like a younger sister to her.
Monty watched the two girls go to their tent wondering if Murphy would try anything throughout the night. He sighed before retreating to the dropship to talk to Jasper about what had just happened and get his input on what they should do about Murphy.
Jamie and Octavia laid across Octavia's cot, shoulder to shoulder.
"I wonder what that was all about."
"I don't know, Tay. He's crazy."
"Jamie?"
They both leaned up when they heard her name from outside the tent. She glanced at Octavia before calling out a, "come in!"
Finn pulled the flap back and stepped in, nodding to Octavia before looking at Jamie. "Can we talk a moment?"
She patted Octavia's leg and climbed to her feet, following Finn out of the tent.
"Monty told me what happened with Murphy, are you okay?"
She smiled lightly at the concern in his voice and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for checking on me space boy."
He nodded, his cheeks flushing as he did. "Well, I'm here if you ever need anything."
"I'll keep that in mind, thank you Finn." She watched him walk away before going in the tent, collapsing back on Octavia's cot.
A few hours later Octavia finally drifted off to sleep and Jamie was able to follow soon after. The night was colder than expected and Jamie awoke to find the young Blake cuddled up with her with both of their blankets covering them. She had to refrain from laughing out loud as she peeled herself away from the younger girl.
When Jamie made her way outside she noticed Bellamy trying to get a hunting party together. She eagerly made her way through the crowd of delinquents to get to him, ready to leave the camp. "What are you doing here?" He asked once his eyes glazed over her.
"I'm going with you." She held up a deadly looking dagger she had found several days prior in the woods.
He rolled his eyes and immediately shook his head. "You even know how to use that thing?"
She huffed out a sharp breath before turning on her heel and throwing the dagger with pinpoint accuracy, sticking it in the tree. She turned back to him with an arch in her brow and a determined stare.
"Fine. Don't slow us down."
She mock saluted him with a small grin. "Whatever you say boss."
His eyes regarded her carefully for a moment before he turned to address the rest of the group. "Anyone going with us needs to be ready to leave in five!"
After retrieving her knife she made her way into the dropship to say goodbye to Jasper and Monty. "Hey, Jazz." She mumbled to the boy with a soft smile. He returned it and hugged her from his position on the table. "Jamie, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Actually, I came to say goodbye to you. I'm joining the hunting party so I'll be gone for a day, maybe two."
He groaned and shook his head, his long fingers wrapping around her wrist as he did. "I should have known you'd be going. Can't keep you in one place for too long."
She rolled her eyes and ruffled his hair. "Octavia and Clarke will be here to keep an eye on you so stay safe."
"Wait! Monty told me what happened with Murphy, are you alright? Are you sure you should be going hunting with him?"
She smirked and shook her head. "Please, you know I can take him."
He laughed and she took that as her cue to leave.
After finding and briefly hugging Monty she rejoined Bellamy's followers in the circle.
His eyes studied her for a moment before he turned to those behind him. "Let's go."
"Wait!"
Jamie turned to see Octavia running towards her.
"Octavia, now isn't the time." Bellamy told the girl, taking a step towards her.
Her dark eyes briefly shifted to him. "I'm not here for you." Her gaze drifted back to Jamie and she smiled at the blonde. "Jay, I want you to have this." She wrapped her arms around the blonde's neck to fasten a necklace.
Jamie looked down at the star pendant and arched a brow at Octavia.
The younger Blake blushed slightly and cleared her throat. "It was my mom's. I want you to have it while you're out there. You know, for good luck."
Jamie's eyes widened and she immediately pulled Octavia to her in a tight hug. "Thank you, Tay." She released the girl and smiled softly at her. "I'll be back soon."
Octavia nodded to her and her eyes briefly met Bellamy's. "Be careful, both of you." Her eyes met Jamie's before turning back around.
Bellamy nodded to Octavia before he flipped back around and quickly made his way out of the camp with the group following. Jamie's fingers gripped the pendant before pushing it beneath her shirt so it would be safe and the small smile remained on her face for a while after.
She pushed her way through the group and ended up at the front directly behind Bellamy. Her eyes took in their surroundings carefully and precisely as she listened closely for any changes. They walked silently through the woods for several hours before they stopped to take a break. She was leaning against a tree with the pendant in her hand as she took another drink from the bottle she swiped off Monty when someone approached her.
"That's the only thing she has of our mother. She must really care about you to let it go."
Her eyes shifted to Bellamy's curious expression. She looked back down at the pendant with a soft smile. "It's beautiful."
"It's based off a nursery rhyme our mother used to tell us." He crouched down in front of her and her body immediately reacted to his close proximity. He reached up and gently grasped the pendant in his own hand. "She gave it to Octavia so she'd remember our father."
A twig snapped in the woods and everyone looked up. Jamie tucked the pendant back into her shirt before rising to her feet.
"What is it?"
She flipped around and glared at Murphy silently telling the boy to shut up. His expression hardened when his eyes met hers and he quickly turned away from her.
When her gaze went back to the source of the noise she noticed Bellamy's arm extended slightly out in front of her in a protective stance. She caught movement in the woods and her hand slid back to pull her knife out. She gripped the handle tightly watching the animal although she still couldn't tell what it was. She glanced at Bellamy once again to find his gaze on her. He nodded his head as if to say, this one's yours, and she eagerly took a step closer.
There was a boar just on the other side of the trees so she silently made her way to the closest tree, stepping up behind it. She didn't hesitate to throw the knife, sticking it directly into the boar's throat. The beast dropped instantly and the group of hunters let out a cheer. She glanced back at them with a satisfied smile before making her way to the boar. She quickly pulled her knife out of it and pulled the bandage off her hand to wipe her blade. After shoving the blade back in her belt she looked up at the group of hunters already preparing to take the boar back to camp.
"Nice throw."
Her eyes flickered over to Bellamy and she smiled lightly at him. "Thanks. It's something I picked up from my father."
"Your father or Clarke's?"
"Well considering mine died before I was born it probably wasn't him. But thanks for asking." She spun on her heel and started walking back towards camp leaving Bellamy to watch her walk away. The rest of the group staggered behind her for a few hours before Bellamy caught up to her. "We're stopping for a break." He grabbed her wrist and pulled her to a stop and she immediately pulled away from him. She kept her gaze focused on the woods before them, her eyes sweeping across the wild terrain.
"Look, I'm sorry I brought up your father. It wasn't my place."
"No, it wasn't." She shrugged and glanced at the boy, her heart fluttered in her chest when she made eye contact with him and she quickly looked away again.
He shifted beside her before he sighed. "I didn't mean anything by it though."
"Okay." She looked down at her stitched up hand, the first time since she pulled off the bandage, and she lightly smiled. Now, with that awesome looking scar, she looked like a badass.
Bellamy shifted again, stepping closer to her. "Look, I don't want you to be mad at me."
Her eyes instantly met his and she arched a brow at him in confusion. "Why? You don't even know me."
His cheeks reddened and he averted his eyes from her gaze. "No, but Octavia seems to have really taken to you. And if she cares about you then so do I."
She rolled her eyes and her gaze refocused on her hand. "I don't need you to watch over me or whatever you think has to happen now." Her gaze met his again. "I can take care of myself."
He nodded and his eyes darted over to Murphy. A grin slowly appeared on his face before he looked back down at her. "I know you can. I saw your altercation with Murphy last night. I admire the way you didn't back down from him."
"It was nothing." She mumbled, a blush staining her cheeks. She quickly looked back down at the ground trying to hide her embarrassment.
"Anyway," he leaned down so he'd meet her gaze. "I appreciate you looking out for Octavia, that's all I'm trying to say."
She shrugged with a small smile. "I'm not doing it for you. Tay is an amazing girl and she deserves to finally be able to live her life."
He smirked and arched a brow at her. "Tay?"
"Yeah, she calls me Jay so I call her Tay. It's cute, get over it." She rolled her eyes playfully before her gaze darted to the woods. She was sure she just heard something... her eyes shifted back to his. He grinned at her, a different look from the brooding one he always seemed to be wearing. She liked this side of him. She found herself smiling back at him before her eyes flickered to another noise she heard in the trees, finally tearing her gaze off of Bellamy.
"I hear it too. No one has seen anything though so I guess we just keep walking. Stay cautious." Bellamy's deep voice mumbled to her as his eyes scoured the area.
She nodded, her eyes remaining on the woods surrounding them. "Okay, then we need to get back before it gets dark."
"Alright everyone, let's go!" Bellamy called out to the group before turning and leading the way back to camp, Jamie right behind him.
"Mommy!" The little girl fought the guard's hold on her only to be pushed against the wall. The guard glared at her as she continued fighting to reach her mother. And then, the door opened and her mother was yanked backwards and out of their home.
Jamie woke up with a stuttering gasp, trying to catch her breath. Her entire body was covered in a cold sweat as she relived that horrid day. She dropped her head into her hands in an attempt to rid the images from her mind. She'd been having the same nightmare nearly every night since that night all those years ago. She looked over at Octavia, sleeping peacefully on her own cot this time, before she slipped out of the tent. Her legs carried her over to the wall that they'd been working on over the past few days and she dropped to the ground. She focused on slowing her breathing as the images still danced behind her eye lids. She heard quiet cries from one of the tents and seconds later a young girl ran out into the night, stopping only a few feet from Jamie. Jamie watched the girl a moment longer before standing and making her way over to her. "Hey, what's wrong?"
The girl looked up at Jamie, startled, before she replied. "Nightmare." Her voice was so quiet and small it made Jamie's heart clinch for her.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
The girl sighed before walking over to one of the logs that surrounded their makeshift fire pit. Jamie followed her and sat beside her, waiting patiently for the girl to talk.
"It's about my mom and dad. I have the same dream every night. And every night is harder than the night before." Her sad eyes met Jamie's and Jamie nodded in understanding.
"I understand how you feel. I have nightmares of my mother every night."
The girl's eyes widened and she scooted closer to Jamie. "But you're the one that killed the pig earlier. How are you scared too?"
Jamie smiled softly at the girl before her eyes drifted to the burnt logs. "I saw my mother get floated when I was five. I've had a dream about it every night since. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier but it doesn't. There's nothing that can take that kind of pain away." Jamie's voice was quiet as she spoke but even she could hear the pain in her voice. And she hated it.
Her gaze shifted back to the small girl before she sighed. "But you don't have to go through it alone. If you talk about it, it might help."
"Bellamy told me to slay my demons during the day so they don't haunt me at night."
Jamie smiled and nodded, her gaze returning to the logs again. "Bellamy is very smart. He knows what he's talking about. What you," She paused before looking back to the girl. "What we need to do about our nightmares is know that our parents aren't suffering anymore. They may have gotten hurt then but they don't feel it anymore. They moved on from this a long time ago. And they would want us to do the same."
The girl remained quiet as she stared up at Jamie.
"They wouldn't want us to keep having nightmares about them." Jamie shifted closer to the girl. "What's your name?"
"Charlotte. And you're Jamie right?"
Jamie nodded and smiled at Charlotte. "Look at it this way, Charlotte. Something good came from our nightmares tonight."
"What?" Charlotte's gaze shifted to the logs Jamie kept looking at.
"We both made a new friend."
Charlotte smiled up at her and nodded. "Yeah, I guess we did. Thank you Jamie." She paused before wrapping her arms around Jamie's waist.
Jamie hesitated briefly before hugging Charlotte back. "How about you try to get some more sleep? I'm here if you need me."
Charlotte climbed to her feet and retreated back to her tent, smiling at Jamie before she left.
"That was a nice talk."
Jamie jumped when she heard the deep, familiar voice behind her. She kept her gaze focused on the burnt logs as the corner of her lip turned up into a grin.
"Are you following me Mr. Blake?"
Bellamy sat down beside her, his eyes looking at the logs as well. "You wish." He glanced at her and smiled when she smacked his arm. "You want to talk about your nightmares?" His face was serious now and his voice was unusually gravelly, causing Jamie's heart to flutter.
She arched a brow at him, responding before she even realized it. "What, you actually care about my nightmares?"
He smirked and his eyes met hers. "No, not really. Just thought I'd try being nice. You know, change it up."
She laughed and nodded. "Okay, well then that makes sense." She pulled her gaze away from him and looked up at the stars. "It's weird not being up there with the stars anymore."
Out of her peripheral she noticed his gaze shift upwards too. "Yeah. I guess so."
"It's all we've ever known. And now we come down here and there are people waiting for us to slip up and make a mistake so they can kill us." She sighed before continuing. "They shouldn't have sent a bunch of kids down to test out the toxicity of this planet. It's not right. Charlotte's too young for this place."
"We all are." His gaze returned to her and she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. "We're stronger than you think princess."
She grinned and turned to look at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Maybe Charlotte is too young but maybe not. Who knows, we might do great things down here."
"Extraordinary things done by ordinary people." Jamie mumbled, remembering the quote that her father used to say. She looked back up at the stars, unconsciously shifting closer to Bellamy. "What do you think happens to people when they die?"
He sighed before his gaze shifted upwards again. "My mother used to tell me that when our loved ones passed, they became the stars. She actually got Octavia's necklace for my father. For us to remember him but..." He shrugged and returned his attention to her. "But then things changed. She changed. I think she gave up the hope she had about him keeping an eye on her, on us." He trailed off and frowned, his gaze shifting to the logs. "Maybe I still believe that our loved ones are the stars. Or I'd like to believe it at least." He looked up at her and held her gaze.
"That's a beautiful way to think about it. Then we could say that even though they're gone, they're still looking after us. Shining down on us for when times get hard so we know that we can keep on going. Something to give us hope."
He smiled lightly and looked back up. "Or they're just balls of gas."
"There's the Bellamy we all know." She retorted with a small grin. She yawned and stood up, stretching out her limbs. "I'm gonna try to get some more sleep. Thank you for the talk, Bellamy. It helped."
He nodded, his gaze still focused on the logs. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Goodnight." She waited a moment longer to see if he would say anything else and turned when he didn't. She didn't see him turn around to watch her walk away though, a small smile on his face.
