Chapter Five: It's Better to be Smart Than Vengeful

A/N: Just wanted to let you all know that I do love John Murphy so please forgive me for how I portray him in this story. He will get redemption though!

A few days passed and Jamie and Octavia were on their way to the dropship, both walking with determination. They had created a plan to try to help Jasper try to overcome his fear of leaving the camp. The task would be harder than expected after several recent deaths had taken the camp by shock. Two of the hundred had simply never returned while they had found Wells Jaha's body just outside the gate the prior morning. Bellamy assumed the grounders were to blame but really, there's no way to know for sure.

"Morning ladies." Monty nodded to the girls with a soft smile as they passed him.

"Morning Mon!" Jamie called out while Octavia stuck with the more traditional, "morning!"

They found the area the boys were sleeping at and both plopped down beside Jasper. "Wake up, Jazz!" Jamie shouted, shaking the boy from his sleep. He woke up, startled, and looked around with wide eyes.

"Jay! You could have been nicer than that! The poor boy just woke up." Octavia stated although the grin on her face proved that she enjoyed the spectacle.

"Trust me, he's used to it." Jamie winked at her friend before looking back to Jasper. "Get up, we have a big day ahead of us!"

Jasper arched a brow at her before turning to Octavia. "Care to explain what this crazy woman is talking about?"

Octavia grinned before replying. "We are going to take you out of the camp today. We thought we could all go on a short walk around the perimeter. We'll be safe and Jamie can take that killer dagger of hers." She winked at the blonde before turning back to Jasper.

The boy's brow furrowed as he considered any other possible options he might have. "Any way of not going out there?"

Both girls smiled and shook their heads at him without saying a word.

"You two already discussed this haven't you?"

They both nodded and Octavia lightly chuckled at Jasper's expression. "Sorry, you're not allowed to become a hermit and stay behind the walls forever, Jazz. Now, get up!" Jamie rose to her feet and held out her hand to help him up. He groaned before allowing himself to be yanked to his feet, sighing deeply as the girls both looped their arm through his and pulled him from the dropship.

Bellamy walked out of his tent to see the girls leading Jasper to the gate. He smirked before approaching them, thinking that they couldn't be up to anything good. "Hey, what are you guys doing?"

"We're helping Jasper conquer his fear of leaving camp." Jamie replied.

Octavia nodded and smiled lightly at her brother. "We'll stay around the perimeter and be careful, don't worry."

Bellamy glanced back and forth between Octavia and Jamie before nodding. "Alright just stay within shouting distance."

Both girls smiled at him before pushing Jasper beyond the walls.

"Look, we're already there. Just take a few more steps, okay?" Octavia spoke softly and encouragingly to Jasper as his eyes shifted to the ground.

Jamie stood beside her with a gentle expression. "One foot in front of the other Jazz, you can do this."

"Hey, what's wrong?" Octavia took a step forward, her hand going to his arm.

Jasper shook his head and frowned self-consciously. "Nothing. I'm good."

"Jasper, it's been a week and you've been given a second chance. You gotta use it." Octavia walked away from him, looking around when she was suddenly pulled behind a bush. She screamed out and both Jasper and Jamie ran to her aide.

"Octavia!" Jasper screamed out, only a few steps behind Jamie. Miller popped up, laughing as he released Octavia. She pushed him and flipped back around to Jamie and Jasper. Jasper released the breath he was holding before speeding off to head back into camp.

"Jasper, come on there's nothing to be afraid of!" Octavia called out, both girls running to catch up to him. Jasper slipped and fell, gasping when his eyes landed on something right in front of him.

"Jazz?" Jamie's eyes widened when she saw what Jasper found. She picked up Well's fingers and the knife they found by the fingers. She slid both into her jacket pocket and nodded to the other two to follow her.

When they walked back into the camp everyone else was milling about, building the walls. Murphy and Bellamy were talking and Jamie watched as one of the boys she didn't know stopped working and Murphy angrily stomped over to the boy. "You think the grounders are just going to sit around and let us finish the wall?" He glanced at Charlotte before stepping closer to the boy. "Maybe we should let the little girl do the lifting for you, huh?"

Jamie's eyes narrowed and she took a step forward only to be held back by Octavia and Jasper. Jamie hadn't had an encounter with Murphy since the night he kissed her but every time she was around him he always said something and tried to make something happen.

"I just need some water and I'll be fine." The kid nearly pleaded, his eyes shifting to Bellamy. Jamie's eyes moved to Bellamy as he approached Murphy and the boy. "Murphy, get this guy some water." He turned to Charlotte with an arch in his brow. "Hey, you got this?"

She moved to pick up the large tree trunk and Bellamy held up his hand quickly, a grin lighting up his features. "Woah, I was kidding."

She smiled and moved back to her post that she was working on and Jamie found a broad smile on her face after watching their interaction. Her attention went back to Murphy when he poured the water on the boy's back. The boy jumped and flipped around to face Murphy. "What the hell is wrong with you Murphy? I'm going to kill you!"

Murphy snickered and shrugged. "You wanted a water break." His gaze flickered around the group of kids that stopped working to watch Murphy and the boy. "Get back to work!" Murphy yelled out, looking at Jamie as he did.

Jamie rolled her eyes and the trio continued on to the dropship. "Hey, Jamie! Wait up!" Murphy called out, rushing to catch up to them.

She sighed and turned towards the boy, her eyes briefly shifting to Bellamy as he watched their interaction from a distance. "What do you want now?"

He glanced at Jasper and Octavia as the two stared back at him and he arched a brow. "Can I talk to her alone for a minute?"

"No, you can't." Jasper immediately responded, stepping closer to Murphy.

Jamie shifted slightly to where she stood in front of Jasper. "Whatever you want to say can be said in front of them."

Murphy snickered and shook his head. "I want you to have dinner with me tonight."

She arched a brow and let out a sharp laugh. "And why would I want that?"

He stepped closer to her, a sly grin on his face. "Because I could give you what you want and make it feel really good."

Jamie's eyes widened, her cheeks flushed, and her mouth dropped open in shock. She didn't know what she had expected but it definitely wasn't that. When she didn't reply Murphy gently ran the back of his hand down her cheek in a caress. "Come on princess, you know you want to."

She cleared her throat and took a step back, trying to distance herself from him. "No, I don't." Her voice was quiet as she replied. Anyone could see how uncomfortable the boy had made her feel and he wasn't backing off.

His eyes narrowed and he took a step forward only to be pulled back by the collar of his coat. "Don't you have work to do Murphy?"

Murphy's gaze lingered on Jamie a moment longer before he sauntered away. Bellamy glanced at her before turning and following Murphy.

Jamie's eyes shifted to the ground as the uneasiness the situation left her, started growing. "Are you okay?" Jasper asked wrapping his arm around her shoulder. She smiled lightly and nodded before turning back to the dropship.

When they walked in Finn and Clarke were talking while Monty was messing with the wristbands.

"Yes! I did it! Still operational." Monty turned with a smile on his face regaining Clarke and Finn's attention.

"What? Monty needed a working wristband." Clarke mumbled to Finn.

"You needed to punish your mother." Finn remarked, peaking Jamie's interest.

"Why did you need to punish mother?" She asked, stepping forward.

Clarke and Finn both turned, surprise on their features. Clarke glanced nervously at Finn before returning her gaze to Jamie. "Um...Jamie, we should probably save that for later."

Jamie's gaze shifted from Finn then back to Clarke and she took another step forward. "No, tell me now Clarke. Why do you want to punish mother?" Her eyes flickered down to Clarke's wrist and she arched a brow before meeting Clarke's gaze again. "Why did you remove your wristband?"

Clarke sighed and stepped closer to Jamie, placing her hand lightly on her cousin's shoulder. "Monty is working on contacting the Ark. They're running out of air and we need their help."

Jamie nodded and waited for her to continue.

"Wells wasn't the only one who knew about father, about what he was going to do." She sighed again before pulling Jamie closer to her. "He's not the one that gave him up."

Jamie's brow furrowed in confusion and her gaze shifted to Finn's. He stared back at her sympathetically and that's when it clicked in the blonde's head. She gasped and her eyes widened. "No, she wouldn't do that." She mumbled quietly to Clarke.

"I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. I just haven't had a chance to talk to you about it."

Tears welled in Jamie's eyes and she shook her head. She looked over at Monty who was now focused on her with a look like he was going to drop what he was doing to come to her aide. She shook her head subtly and cleared her throat. "Any luck with that Mon?"

He shrugged lightly gesturing to the wristband in his hand. "We should be able to talk to the Ark by nightfall."

Jamie nodded at him and turned back to leave the dropship. "Hey, Clarke, we found something you need to see."

She continued towards the exit and as she passed by Octavia the younger girl wrapped an arm around Jamie's waist. "You okay?"

Jamie nodded silently to the girl, giving Jasper a small smile as she passed him. Jasper wrapped his arm around Jamie's shoulder and the three of them walked from the dropship. Jasper pressed a light kiss to her temple and whispered, "I'm sorry Jamie Jam."

"Hey, Bell! We need to talk to you." Octavia called out the moment her brother appeared in their line of sight. He glanced at them before nodding and leading them to his tent with Clarke in tow.

"Jamie!" Clarke called out, jogging to reach the blonde. "Wait!"

Jamie ignored Clarke's pleas as they entered Bellamy's tent. Bellamy flipped around to face them with an arch in his brow. His eyes regarded Jamie curiously and she quickly pulled what they found from her pocket. She placed them on the table and looked back up at him.

"Jamie, can we please talk about this?" Clarke whispered, not having seen what Jamie placed on the table.

Jamie groaned before looking at Clarke. "We have more important things to deal with right now." She turned back to Bellamy. "We found these where you guys found Wells."

Clarke immediately made her way to the table and picked up the knife, concern crossing her features. "This knife was made from the metal of the dropship."

"What do you mean?" Jasper asked quietly.

Bellamy sighed and ran a hand down his face. "Who else knows about this?"

"No one. We brought it straight to you." Jamie replied glancing between Clarke and Bellamy.

Jasper took a tentative step closer to Clarke. "Clarke?"

"It means the grounders didn't kill Wells." Clarke met Jamie's gaze.

"It was one of us." Jamie finished, understanding why Bellamy asked who else knew about their findings.

"So, there's a murderer in the camp." Jasper mumbled, looking around their group.

"There's more than one murderer in this camp. This isn't news." Bellamy's gaze drifted over everyone standing around him. "We need to keep it quiet."

Clarke moved to walk out of the tent and Bellamy blocked her path. "Get out of my way Bellamy."

"Be smart about this. Look at what we've achieved. The wall, the patrols, like it or not thinking the grounders killed Wells is good for us."

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Oh, good for you, you mean. What? Keep the people afraid and they'll work for you, is that it?"

"Yeah, that's it." Bellamy replied instantly. He sighed and shook his head before looking back down at Clarke. "But it's good for all of us. Fear of the grounders is building that wall. And besides, what are you gonna do? Just walk out there and ask the killer to step forward? You don't even know whose knife that is."

"Oh really?" She arched her brow and held up the knife. "JM. John Murphy. The people have a right to know."

"Clarke, don't do this. This isn't the Ark where we have civilized adults making the rules and enforcing them. Hell, we don't even have rules here." Jamie stepped forward with a plea in her eyes. "Bellamy's right. We can't just tell a bunch of delinquents about this and expect them to react reasonably."

Clarke frowned before stepping closer to Jamie. "This isn't about what I told you is it?"

Jamie's mouth dropped and she glared at her cousin. "No, it has nothing to do with that!" She took a step closer and folded her arms over her chest, her gaze briefly meeting Bellamy's. "You can't say anything about this. Father was right about the people of the Ark having the right to know but out here the rules are different."

"Didn't you hear? There are no rules!" Clarke huffed before she shook her head and maneuvered around Bellamy, exiting the tent. Bellamy sighed as he headed after her, Jamie, Octavia and Jasper followed.

"Clarke! Clarke, don't do this!" Jamie grabbed her cousin's arm and Clarke shook her off. "Oh my God! Are you serious?" Jamie grabbed Clarke again and forced her to stop and look at her.

"What? What is it Jaymes?" Clarke's eyes narrowed at Jamie as the blondes stared at each other.

"What the hell is your problem? Why are you so determined to ruin what we have here?" Jamie shouted at Clarke. When Clarke didn't reply Jamie continued. "You are so hell bent on sharing the good word and calling out someone who might not have even done it, that you're not considering the consequences!"

Clarke arched a brow and glanced at Jasper, Octavia and Bellamy, who all stood behind Jamie.

Realization crossed Jamie's features and she stepped closer to Clarke. "No, I know what this is about. You feel like you have to do this since father failed and wasn't able to tell anyone on the Ark."

Clarke's eyes widened and she pushed Jamie away from her. "NO! You don't talk about him! You don't get to talk about him! He was my father, not yours!"

Bellamy's arms wrapped around Jamie and he pulled her away from Clarke. "Stop it! Now isn't the time for this!" He yelled at Clarke. He held Jamie up against his chest but her narrowed eyes remained focused on Clarke.

"I lost him too, Clarke! He may not have been my real father but he raised me like one." Tears built in her eyes and she angrily pushed back against Bellamy, breaking his hold on her. She marched up to Clarke with a scowl on her face. "You've always thought of me like I was some burden that got dumped on you and your parents but at least your father thought differently! He raised me like a warrior! He taught me things that I could actually use out here because he wanted me to survive long before he even knew I'd need it!" Tears freely flowed down her cheeks and Clarke's eyes were glazed over as she stared back at Jamie with a pained expression. "I'm sorry that my parents died, Clarke. And I'm sorry you lost him but you're not the only one who did." Her voice broke at the end and a soft hand grabbed hers, squeezing it tightly. She glanced over to Jasper and smiled lightly at him, letting him know she was okay. He and Monty had been the ones to console her after Jake got floated a year before and even with her nightmares of her mother, the two boys had never seen the girl so broken. She was extremely close to Jake and was considered lucky to have never found out exactly why he got floated, as Clarke did.

Clarke shook her head, tears glistening in her eyes. Her breathing faltered when her eyes caught sight of Murphy. He was in a kid's face, yelling at him. "What? What are you staring at?"

"You son of a bitch!" Clarke screamed, rushing over to Murphy and pushing him roughly away from the kid. Bellamy groaned before quickly making his way to Clarke with Octavia, Jasper, and Jamie following.

When they reached Murphy and Clarke, Murphy was laughing. "What's your problem?"

Clarke arched and eyebrow and held up the knife. "Recognize this?"

Murphy reached for the knife only for Clarke to pull it back. "That's my knife, where'd you find it?"

Clarke stepped closer to him as she narrowed her eyes in response. "Where you dropped it after you killed Wells."

"Where I what?" His eyes widened and he quickly glanced around to everybody witnessing the scene. Jamie stood anxiously beside Bellamy with her arms crossed over her chest. "The grounders killed Wells, not me."

"I know what you did and you're gonna pay for it." She spat out.

Murphy arched a brow at her with a small grin on his face. "Really?" He looked at Bellamy, taken back by the blonde at his side, before asking, "Bellamy, you really believe this crap?"

Bellamy shifted slightly, his eyes focused on the nervous boy in front of him.

"You threatened to kill him! We all heard you! You hated Wells!" Clarke yelled at him, regaining everyone's attention.

"Plenty of people hated Wells!" Murphy yelled back. "His father was the chancellor that locked us up!" His eyes immediately shifted to Jamie. "How do we know it wasn't you? You were the one who punched him after we first landed!"

"Yeah, you're the only who got in a knife fight with him!" Jamie replied easily.

"Yeah, I didn't kill him then either."

"And you tried to kill Jasper." Octavia stated, moving slightly closer to Jamie as she spoke.

Jasper paled as he looked at the girls. "What?"

"Come on this is ridiculous! I don't have to answer to you." Murphy glared at Clarke before continuing. "I don't have to answer to anyone!"

Bellamy took a small step towards Murphy then. "Come again?"

Murphy threw his hands in the air before looking at Bellamy with pleading eyes. "Bellamy, look man, I'm telling you I didn't do this."

"They found his fingers on the ground with your knife." Bellamy spoke slowly before shifting his gaze to Clarke as she started speaking again.

"Is this the kind of society we want? You say there should be no rules, does that mean we can kill each other without...without punishment?"

Murphy shook his head immediately. "I already told you! I didn't kill anyone!"

Jamie studied the boy as he spoke and her heart clinched when her instinct told her it wasn't him. She glanced at Clarke to notice the blonde was still fuming, still wanting Well's killer to suffer for his crime. Her eyes then turned to Bellamy who had a look of conflict on his face. He couldn't tell whether or not Murphy was telling the truth. He turned his head towards her then, his eyes meeting hers. He arched a brow and she subtly shook her head. He returned to watching Murphy, a frown now prominent in his features.

"I say we float him!" A familiar looking kid called out. Jamie took a moment to look at his features before realizing who he was. He was the one Murphy dumped water on. The one who said he was going to kill him.

Several voices cheered out in support of the idea. Just as she predicted everything would soon spiral out of control and potentially cost an innocent person his life. She didn't care for Murphy but this wasn't right. They weren't on the Ark anymore, committing a crime shouldn't automatically mean death. She may have punched Wells on day one but after that she tolerated him. She didn't care for him but still she wouldn't have wanted him to get floated.

Clarke's eyes widened as she looked around the group. "No! That's not what I meant!"

"Why not? He deserves to float! It's justice!" The same kid yelled out, as if it was the only solution.

"Revenge isn't justice!" Clarke yelled back, her voice wavering in fear.

"Whatever problems you have with Murphy can't be fixed like this!" Jamie yelled out to the boy who seemed intent on floating Murphy.

"It's justice! Float him! Float him! Float him!" The kid started chanting. Much to Jamie and the others' dismay, everyone else started chanting with him.

Murphy lunged at the kid then and someone tripped him on the way, causing him to crash hard to the ground. Everything afterwards happened so fast... when Murphy was on the ground the crowd moved in and several people started kicking him. Jamie and Octavia dove towards him only to be pushed back by Bellamy. "Do you both want to join him?" He yelled to them, as the group surged forward, pushing them back.

Jamie watched Murphy on the ground in horror as he struggled to cover his face with the delinquents still kicking him. She turned to Octavia, glancing at Jasper before returning her attention to the younger Blake. "Stay with him, okay?" She yelled out. Octavia nodded and stepped back into Jasper as Jamie turned back towards Murphy. She darted forward and started breaking through the crowd with Clarke imitating her actions on the other side of Murphy.

"No! Get off him!" Clarke yelled out, trying to get to Murphy.

Jamie started throwing her own punches, anything to help the defenseless boy on the ground. "Let him go!" She shouted over the crowd.

The delinquents retaliated by pushing both girls back and gagging and tying up Murphy. They watched with wide eyes as the crowd strung up a rope to hang the boy.

"You can't do this!" Clarke ran forward once more, motivating Jamie to help her. Clarke pushed through the crowd with Jamie on her heels until two boys grabbed the girls to refrain them. "Get off me!" Jamie yelled, kicking the kid holding her and sending him stumbling back. With her newfound freedom she attacked the kid holding Clarke before being refrained. The deafening roar of the crowd was enough to make Jamie's head spin and looking up at Murphy only made it worse.

He was bloody and beaten, standing on a crate with a rope around his neck. His watery eyes were trained on Jamie as she stared back at him with two boys holding her. Her eyes widened again as the resolve flooded through her. She quickly bucked back and hit the boy right behind her in the face before swinging her leg out and kicking the other. She ran to the tree where the rope was and quickly pulled out her dagger, ready to sever the tie. Her knife was yanked out of her hand and she was roughly shoved against the tree.

"What the hell is wrong with you? He forced himself on you, remember?" The boy who started it all yelled back at her, his hand crushing her windpipe. "You can't stop this!"

"He didn't do it!" She choked out, struggling for air. She tried to kick out at him but he was holding her to the tree with too much force, rendering her paralyzed.

The boy was pulled back then and her hands instantly moved to her throat. Her eyes flickered up and met warm brown ones that were filled with concern. Bellamy grabbed her arm and pulled her back through the crowd and towards Octavia.

"Bellamy!" She managed to cough out, still trying to catch her breath. He stopped and turned to her, hands moving to her arms as she continued, "you can stop this!"

Clarke wrapped an arm around Jamie's shoulder then as Bellamy's gaze searched Jamie's. "They'll listen to you!" She pleaded, although Bellamy's eyes didn't shift away from Jamie.

"Bellamy, you should do it!" One of the kids close to them shouted out.

Bellamy's eyes widened and he finally turned away from the blonde that was still trying to catch her breath in his arms.

The crowd started chanting Bellamy's name and his eyes looked over them in shock. Could he do this? Jamie looked over the group of angry boys before her eyes returned to Bellamy. Jamie could see the intensity behind his gaze and when his eyes met hers she realized he didn't want this either.

She shook her head, her lower lip quivering as a tide of emotions hit her. "Please, Bell. You can't do this." She pleaded with him as he stared back at her.

"I saw you in the woods with Atom! I know you're not a killer!" Clarke yelled out, breaking Bellamy's trance. His eyes shifted to hers briefly before regret filled his features. He took in a staggered breath before looking back at Jamie. She knew then that his mind was made up but she didn't stop begging him to change it. "No! Bellamy you can't do this! Please don't!"

Clarke joined her in begging their leader to stop the situation before it escalated, before a potentially innocent man was hung. "No, Bellamy don't! Don't do this!"

Both girls stood shoulder to shoulder with a plea in their eyes as Bellamy's grip tightened on Jamie's arms. He looked over the group, clinching his jaw. "NO!" Jamie yelled out as he released her. He pushed through the crowd, holding the girls back with one arm while he made his way towards Murphy. Murphy shook his head with tears in his eyes, pleading his innocence around the gag in his mouth. An agonizing second passed before Bellamy swiftly kicked the crate out from underneath Murphy. The crowd cheered as the boy hung, Jamie's mouth dropped open in horror as Clarke charged towards Bellamy. She pushed him back angrily, betrayal on her face.

He pushed her back, anger radiating through him. "This is on you princess! You should have kept your mouth shut!"

"What the hell are you doing?"

Jamie turned when she heard Finn's voice over the crowd. His eyes landed on hers briefly before he took in the scene. "Charlotte, get out of here now!" He pushed the young girl towards the back of the crowd before continuing towards Murphy. "Cut him down!"

One of the kids in the crowd pulled a weapon on Finn. "No! You stay back!"

Finn smirked before pulling the weapon from the kid and pushing him to the ground. "Get out of my way!"

His eyes shifted back to Jamie and he gently grabbed her arm as he continued towards Murphy. She clinched onto him as her eyes remained on Murphy, struggling to escape death in the tree. His eyes were red and his face was swollen as he stared back down at her, silently begging for help.

"Stop, okay? Murphy didn't kill Wells!" Everyone stopped and turned towards the small girl had managed to shout out over the crowd. Jamie's grip tightened on Finn's arm in apprehension as she hoped Charlotte wasn't about to say what she thought was coming. "I did!"
