Chapter Eighteen: To Enemy or not to Enemy?
Jasper climbed down and stopped when he saw Murphy toss the bag to the side.
Murphy turned to them and his eyes widened. "He stopped breathing. I was trying to help him."
Jasper climbed down beside Jamie and when his feet hit the floor, he shifted so he was standing in front of her as Murphy pulled a gun on them.
"Murphy, just put the gun down." Jasper's voice was strong as he spoke but as Jamie grabbed his hand she could feel him trembling.
Murphy's eyes held a plea as he looked from Jamie back to Jasper. "He tried to kill me."
Jasper moved like he was going to make a run for it and Murphy stepped closer with the gun ready. "Hey, don't move."
Jasper raised his hands in surrender, completely shielding Jamie. "Okay, okay. It's cool."
Murphy ran a hand down his face and he shook his head. "No, it's not. You know what'll happen to me if you tell Bellamy."
"Tell Bellamy what?"
Jamie gasped and dropped her head against Jasper's back as Bellamy's voice echoed over the walkie talkie in Jasper's hand.
"Give me the radio Jasper." Murphy took a menacing step forward with his free hand outstretched.
Before Jamie could stop him Jasper raised the walkie talkie and replied to Bellamy. "Murphy has a gun. He killed Myles."
"Murphy, what the hell are you doing?" Bellamy nearly yelled.
Murphy shook his head and quickly made a bee line to the dropship entrance. He shut the door to the dropship as quickly as possible, grinning when it locked in place. Jamie took the opportunity of him being distracted to lunge for him, successfully knocking the gun from his hand. He turned quickly and nailed her in the face with his fist to gain some sort of leverage on her. Jasper dove towards them but by the time he reached them Murphy regained possession of the gun and had it pressed against Jamie's temple with his arm securely around her. "Move and she dies. Right here. Right now. And don't test me. I really don't want to have to do this."
"Murphy! Murphy! Open the damn door!" Bellamy yelled from outside the dropship as he banged on the door.
Murphy moved Jamie over to one of the support beams in the room and pushed her up against it. "Jasper, grab that rope and come here."
Jasper did as instructed, moving very cautiously as he did, his eyes never leaving the gun aimed at Jamie. "Tie her wrists around the pole and make it tight or I swear I won't hesitate to kill her."
Bellamy's fists continued their assault on the door of the dropship, screaming over and over for Murphy to let him in.
Jasper did as instructed and Murphy nodded in approval. He shoved the gun in the band of his jeans as he tied Jasper up to another support beam, grabbing the radio as he did. He gagged both of them before finally replying to Bellamy's frantic pleas.
"You try to be a hero and they die." Murphy told Bellamy.
Nothing else was said after that and the silence seemed to last forever as Jamie subtly tried to break free of the restraints. Murphy kept a close eye on her however so it made her task much more difficult to accomplish.
"I didn't want to do this." Murphy quietly admitted. "You guys have any idea what it's like to be hung and think, with everything in you, that you're going to die?"
Jamie's eyes shifted up to Murphy's and he winced after seeing the amount of blind fury in her eyes. He knew then that if she broke free, she would kill him.
"I still have nightmares about it. I don't think I'll ever be able to get past what happened." Murphy continued, looking over at Jasper. Jasper's eyes reflected his fear, pain, and panic in them, nothing like what Jamie's were. "I know you guys are hurting too, okay? I know that."
"Murphy, I know you can hear me. All our ammo and food is in the middle level. You know that. You're leaving us vulnerable to an attack and I can't let that happen." Bellamy's voice sliced through the air, sparking hope in Jamie.
Murphy snickered and glanced at his two hostages. "Yeah, well, in case you haven't noticed, you're not exactly in control right now."
"Come on Murphy. You don't want to hurt either of them. You want to hurt me. So, what do you say? How about you trade them for me?"
Jamie's eyes widened and she quickly shifted her gaze to the floor as tears welled in her eyes at the thought of him being in danger as well.
"All you have to do is let them go and I'll take their place." Bellamy continued.
"How?" Murphy asked, moving closer to Jamie and tilting her chin up so she'd have to look at him. "No, no, you're watching this." He whispered to her.
"Simple. You open the door, I walk in, they walk out."
Murphy grinned, stroking Jamie's cheek lightly. "Just you, Bellamy, unarmed. And you're only getting Jasper. There's no way I'm letting my queen go. Not now. Ten seconds or I'll put one in her leg." Murphy started counting over the walkie until Bellamy cut him off. "I'm here."
Murphy pulled Jasper to his feet and started walking him to the entrance of the dropship. Jasper tried talking around the gag but his words were all muffled. He was turned in a drastic way, looking at Jamie as Murphy pushed him forward. He had tears in his eyes as he watched Jamie watch him get pushed towards safety. "Go!" Murphy nearly yelled at him, pushing him roughly forward. Jamie winced when the door opened a little bit and Murphy pushed Jasper out as Bellamy walked in. Bellamy's dark eyes only met hers briefly until Murphy hit him, gaining the temporary leverage. Murphy straddled Bellamy and started pummeling him with his fists, repeatedly until Bellamy's face was covered in blood.
Jamie screamed out against her gag causing Murphy to smirk. He dragged Bellamy's body over towards her before pulling out one of the ropes made of seat belts. Bellamy started to stir and Murphy swung around to kick him in the stomach. Jamie cried out again, pulling on the rope holding her to the column.
"See, the problem with this is that I am in love with a girl who is in love with someone else. And I know that I have no chance with that girl but this guy, the one she loves, tried to kill me. So, I'm thinking it's only fair if I kill him." Murphy was walking around, talking in circles as he spoke, gesturing wildly with his hands. Jamie's eyes widened when Murphy announced his plans. She could feel her heart pounding wildly in her chest and her breathing became ragged as she watched Murphy twist the belt around his hands. She shifted slightly and looked at Bellamy. He was clutching his stomach, kneeling on his knees with his head on the floor but his eyes were focused on her.
Murphy strode towards her and leaned closer to her. His hand gently trailed down her cheek and he pushed her hair away from her face. "So beautiful." He murmured quietly. "I didn't want any of this to happen. I've never wanted to hurt you. I was hoping you would have chosen me after I saved you and then helped care for the wounded...I should have been your hero." His thumb traced her cheek lightly and she quickly pulled away from him and looked to the side.
Murphy sighed and shook his head. "Okay, well if that's how you want it." He roughly grabbed her chin and pulled her back to where she was looking at him. Tears pooled in her eyes as she looked up at him and he smiled wickedly before running his thumb over her lips, separated by the gag. She tried pulling away from him but he shook his head. "Stop fighting me!" He screamed, his hold on her chin hardened and she flinched in pain. "We can be happy together Jamie. I won't ever hurt you if you just come with me. What's even keeping you here now that Clarke and Monty's gone, Jasper? Octavia?" His eyes narrowed and he glanced at Bellamy. "Him?" He turned back to her and arched a brow. "You know Monty, Clarke, and Finn are dead because of him? You almost were. He sent them and you out there. And yet here you are...crying over him because you don't want to watch him die. Or don't want him to die, whatever. It's sickening. Pathetic." He shook his head again and kissed her cheek harshly. "Well, it's a little late for that. After I kill him, you're coming with me."
Bellamy staggered to his feet and dove at Murphy, catching him off guard. Murphy managed to keep his hold on the gun and it misfired as he hit the ground. Bellamy quickly glanced up at Jamie to make sure she hadn't been hit before he attempted to get the gun. With a kick Murphy was able to dislodge Bellamy and got the gun in position against Bellamy's chest.
"Bellamy? Are you guys okay?" Octavia's voice echoed over the walkie talkie and Murphy grinned. "You want her to know you're alive? Start tying." He tossed the seat belt rope in his hand to Bellamy and gestured to the beam running across the ceiling.
Jamie's eyes widened as she realized Murphy's plans. He was going to have Bellamy make his own noose.
"Bellamy! Jamie! Do you copy?" Octavia's voice was frantic on the other end of the walkie talkie. Murphy tossed the walkie talkie to him, shifting the gun to point at Jamie. "Say one wrong thing and I shoot her."
Bellamy's eyes watched Murphy closely as he replied to Octavia. "We're fine. Just a misfire. Now, stop worrying about us and get back to work, all of you. And tell Raven to hurry her ass up."
"Alright, that's long enough." Murphy took the walkie talkie back and shoved it in his pocket. "Tie those two ends together." He watched as Bellamy obeyed and nodded in approval. "Alright, now get up and toss it over." He gestured to the crates he had moved under the beam and Bellamy's gaze briefly flickered to Jamie.
He noticed the slight ripple in her sleeve as her hands worked quickly to free her from the pole. He looked back at Murphy, trying a new approach. "What do you want me to say? You want me to apologize? I'm...I'm sorry." He held his hands up as Murphy turned the gun on him. Bellamy hadn't intended for that to happen but he did relax a bit when the gun shifted away from Jamie.
"You got it all wrong Bellamy. I don't want you to say anything. I want you to feel what I felt and then...then I want you to die. And I want Jamie to watch it happen." He turned to look at Jamie for a second before looking back at Bellamy. "You have no idea what it's like to love a girl that feels physical pain when she watches the guy she loves get hurt. And it's not you. And the real bitch of it is when that guy tries to kill you. That's just the icing on the cake!"
He sighed and ran a hand down his face before looking at Jamie again. "This isn't just for me. It's for her too. Closure is important for people like her, you know." His eyes narrowed and he shook his head. "No, after she watches you die, I'm taking her with me and then I'll get the happy ending I deserve. And overtime she'll learn to love me back. All that stands in the way is you." Murphy angrily gestured to the crate again. "Stand on it and put it over your head."
"This is insane. The grounders could..." Bellamy's sentence was cut short as Murphy fired off another warning shot. Jamie fought harder against the ropes and she could feel the blood running down her arms from her wrists as the ropes cut into her skin. She didn't care about that though. The only thing she was concerned about was the gun in Murphy's hand pointed at Bellamy. She couldn't lose him. She wouldn't lose him.
Bellamy slowly climbed onto the crate and Murphy gestured to the rope. "Put it over your head."
Bellamy did as instructed, glancing at Jamie once more. "Happy now?" He asked, eyes shifting to Murphy.
Murphy smirked and shook his head. "You're so brave, aren't you? I mean, you came in here thinking you're just gonna turn this whole thing around, that you were stronger than me, and maybe one of your friends would come and help you. And that you'd save the girl. My girl. Well, what are you thinking now, Bellamy? Hmmm?" Murphy pulled the rope and elevated Bellamy off the crate a little bit. Bellamy's toes grazed the crate, just enough to keep him from choking.
"You know, I got to hand it to you, Bellamy. You got 'em all fooled. They actually look up to you. Almost as much as they look up to Clarke and Jamie. Well, we know the truth, don't we? You're a coward. I learned that the day you kicked the crate out from beneath me. But you didn't want to do that right? Isn't that what you said? That you were just giving the people what they wanted?"
"I should have stopped them." Bellamy mumbled.
Jamie pulled harder against the rope knowing this was about to end one way or another. Her right hand was just about out...
"Yeah, it's a little late for that now." Murphy's voice was laced with sarcasm as he replied, waving the gun around. "Maybe you should have listened to your girlfriend over there when she practically begged you to spare my life."
"You think they're just gonna let you walk out of here?"
"Well, I think the princess is dead, the queen is about to be mine and I know the king's about to die. So, who's really gonna lead these people, huh? Me. That's who. And with Jamie by my side we'll run this place together. And yeah, maybe I'll have to kill your grounder pounding little sister." Murphy laughed as Bellamy kicked out at him and he pulled the rope even tighter, choking Bellamy a bit more.
There was a noise from below them and Jamie faintly heard a squeal as Murphy's eyes lit up in excitement. "I'm guessing that's her right now." He shifted the gun to aim at the ground and shoot whoever was in the hatch below them.
"No!" Bellamy yelled, the second Murphy pulled the trigger. With a swift kick Murphy kicked the crate out from under Bellamy. Bellamy's hands immediately went up to the rope that was tightening around his neck and Jamie watched with horror as he hung before her.
"Using your hands is a cheat. Mine were bound, remember?" Murphy went to lunge at Bellamy but then the dropship door started lowering. Jamie used the distraction to yank her bloody hands from the rope and as Murphy scrambled up the ladder she ran to the pole that the rope was tied around. Jasper ran in first, wrapping his arms around Bellamy's legs and lifting him enough to help him breathe as Jamie managed to get the rope untied.
Octavia ran in and her eyes widened in fear when she saw Bellamy hanging. "Bell! Hold on!" She ran to him as Jamie released the rope and they all moved over him as he was brought to the ground.
Jamie pulled the rope from his neck and leaned down to listen to chest, one of her hands gently laying against his neck. Her eyes teared up as she heard the faint thudding of his heart and she moved back up to his face.
"Breathe Bell, breathe!" Octavia mumbled frantically.
Jasper leaned over him from across Octavia, fidgeting with his hands. "Breathe! Can you breathe?"
Jamie tilted Bellamy's head back and opened his mouth with one hand resting against his cheek as she tried to save him. She gently pressed down on his chin to open up his airway and he sucked in a sharp breath. "There you go." She whispered in relief.
"Good! You're okay, you're okay." Octavia chanted as she pulled Bellamy to her.
"Raven, he's fine!" Jasper yelled out to the mechanic.
The moment Bellamy's eyes opened Jamie jumped to her feet and ran to the ladder. The hatch was locked so Jamie started pounding on it. "Murphy!" She screamed, banging on the door. Bellamy slowly staggered to his feet, joining in Jamie's screams. "Murphy!" He climbed up the ladder behind her, holding on to the side next to her. He pounded on the hatch while screaming, "There's only one way out of this for you now!"
"You want to bet?" Murphy yelled back, pushing Bellamy to pound against the hatch harder.
There was an explosion that rocked the dropship and Bellamy quickly wrapped an arm around Jamie's waist to make sure she remained on the ladder with him. When the rocking stopped he released her and pushed the hatch open. He climbed past her and went through the hatch first with Jamie right on his tail. There was a large hole in the side of the dropship and both ran to it.
Jasper joined them a moment later to see Murphy run out, right below them. "The guy knows how to make an exit. Should we go after him?" Jasper asked quietly.
As Bellamy told Jasper no, Jamie glanced down at Bellamy's belt and grabbed his axe, throwing it as hard as she could at Murphy.
Murphy turned towards them right as the axe nailed him in the shoulder.
Jamie started to climb from the dropship but Bellamy wrapped his arms around her and kept her against him. "The grounders will take care of Murphy. We're going after Clarke, Finn, and Monty. You guys are right. We don't abandon our own." He released Jamie and she slowly turned towards him as he continued. Bellamy's eyes drifted down to her bloody wrists and he gently held her hands in his own as he continued talking. "We'll take two guns. The three of us. That's it. Raven stays here to build up defenses. We lost a day because of this and our gunpowder." He released his hold on Jamie and walked to the hatch and hovered over.
"Raven!"
"Bellamy, wait. Look, I just..." Jasper glanced nervously at Jamie before hugging Bellamy. "Thank you. We've come a long way from whatever the hell you want."
Jamie smiled at their interaction and her heart fluttered when Bellamy's eyes met hers. He nodded and patted Jasper's back, clearing his throat nervously as Jasper pulled back. Jamie walked up to the two and placed her hand on Jasper's back as the walkie talkie crackled from the first level. They quickly climbed down the ladder and when Bellamy picked up the walkie talkie the message repeated. "All gunners! We got movement outside the south wall!"
