Chapter Eight: Building up Defense
A/N: Warning for strong language in this one!
The next morning Jamie found herself laying back to back with Monty and a few feet from where Octavia was cuddled up to Jasper. She climbed from her spot and retreated to her and Octavia's tent, surprised when she found Clarke waiting for her. The blonde looked up when Jamie entered and slowly pulled herself to her feet. "Hey, I was hoping we could talk?"
Jamie shrugged and plopped down on her cot, Clarke following her lead.
"Listen, what I said about father the other day. Jamie, I shouldn't have said it I mean I didn't even mean it and it's not true anyway I mean anyone could see how much he loved you. He always loved you, even when we were just watching you before your mother passed."
"Clarke, you're rambling." Jamie had tried to interrupt earlier but when Clarke was nervous...well, it seemed like the girl just couldn't help herself. Clarke looked up at her cousin with an arch in her brow and she smiled softly, an apologetic smile. "It's okay. I get it. There was a lot going on and well, I just get it. I'm not mad or anything."
Clarke nodded before pulling Jamie into a tight hug. "I feel like everything is so different down here and I just wanted to make sure we were okay." She pulled back to look Jamie in the eye. "I can't lose you. You're all I have here Jamie. I know that's not the same for you I mean you have Octavia and Bellamy now, not to mention Jasper and Monty."
"You won't lose me. Everything is really different down here but we'll always have each other. And you don't just have me..." Jamie grinned up at Clarke before continuing. "Finn seems pretty attached to you."
Clarke groaned and threw herself into a laying position next to Jamie. "Don't get me started on him."
"Hey, Jamie?" Octavia entered the tent and paused when she saw Clarke. "Sorry, I can come back I didn't realize you had company."
"No, you're fine come in." Jamie instantly patted the spot next to her with a smile and the younger Blake immediately rushed in to plop down beside her. "What's up Tay?"
Octavia let out a dramatic sigh before rolling on her side to look at the exhausted looking blonde. "Jamie did you even sleep at all last night?"
Jamie arched a brow and shook her head. "Don't do that, what did you come in here for?"
"Well, I was thinking about how you're the one who made the shot last night and well..."
"What shot?" Clarke leaned up to better look at Jamie with a frown prominent on her face.
Octavia grimaced, turning to Jamie with an apologetic frown that shouted I'm sorry.
"Bellamy and I got caught in the woods last night with a giant cat beast thing and I shot it, no big deal." Jamie shrugged her shoulders but Octavia's snort did nothing to convince Clarke that the incident was nothing.
"Jamie, what happened?"
"It was nothing Clarke." She turned to Octavia with a gentle smile. "Okay, so I made the shot last night and?"
"If it were me out there I'd probably be dead. I can't shoot. I can't fight. Nothing. I want to learn how to protect myself."
Jamie glanced at Clarke before nodding, an idea coming to life in her mind. "You're right, you need to learn. Both of you. Actually, everyone needs to know how to fight. I'll um...I'll be right back." She climbed to her feet and rushed out of the tent, heading straight to Bellamy's. She paused outside, having trouble gaining the confidence she needed to go in. The tent opened and she jumped back in surprise when Bellamy walked out. He stopped suddenly and his expression shifted to a nervous one, opposite his usual cocky demeanor. "Hey, Jamie. What's up?" He stammered out, flustered.
"Octavia mentioned that if it were her in our position last night she wouldn't have been able to make that shot so I was thinking she's right and we should train her and Clarke and Jasper and Monty and hell, everyone how to fight for themselves. Everyone needs to know how to survive out here." She rushed everything out in one breath, blushing as she finished.
He considered her request a moment before nodding in agreement. "You're right. They do need to know how to defend themselves."
Her eyes widened as he agreed before she got ahold of herself and nodded. "Yeah, okay, yeah, we can just train them then."
His eyes watched hers carefully as she spoke and he couldn't help but notice how nervous and flustered she was and he'd never seen her like this. Not to mention the dark bags under her eyes. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm just..." She sighed and shook her head, tears glistening in her eyes. "I'm actually tired of people feeling the need to ask me if I'm okay. I've never been this person, this weak, defenseless person that..."She trailed off and turned her gaze to her hands that were nervously twisting together. "I've always been stronger than this. I don't know if it's this place that's causing me to feel weak or what but it's made me hate who I am, who I've become."
"You're not weak or defenseless. You've put up more of a fight than anyone else here so far." He took a hesitant step forward but she immediately took one back.
"I'm sorry Bell. I have to focus on me now. I can't...I can't do this." She offered a small smile and he nodded in return. "I don't want to say the cliché, it's not you it's me but...it is me. I just have to be the strong fighter I was. I don't want people asking me if I'm okay anymore."
He nodded and forced a smile for her but she could still see the despair in his features. And she hated herself even more for being the one to put it there. "I can help you become that person again." He mumbled with an arch in his brow.
A bright smile appeared on her face and she nodded eagerly. "I would love that. Thank you."
"We can spar with one another after we help train the others. And we can start now if you want to get them." He added, glancing at the camp behind her.
"Okay, I'll see you in a few." She turned and he watched her walk back to her tent with more pep in her step than she had in the past few days.
Bellamy led them all to a small clearing not too far from the camp. They decided only a few people should leave at a time so Clarke, Octavia, Jasper, Monty and Jamie were the ones to follow Bellamy out while Finn stayed back to keep an eye on things. "What's the point of this?"
Bellamy rolled his eyes before looking back at Jasper. "The point of this is to help you keep yourself alive."
"This is a new concept for him since he's always been the damsel in distress in our group." Monty added with a smirk.
Jamie snorted with a laugh while Octavia and Clarke both tried to hide their chuckles with their hands. Bellamy grinned and glanced at Jamie, quickly turning away when her eyes flickered to him.
"Yeah, yeah, let's make fun of the one who got speared on the first freaking day here. That says nothing about your crappy character." Jasper mumbled, making exasperated expressions as he spoke.
"Oh, come on. Don't be like that." Octavia wrapped an arm around Jasper's shoulder and the boy blushed and smiled up at her.
"Yeah, it was definitely the second day here." Jamie added with a grin at the boy causing another round of small laughs.
"Okay, so since we only have the one gun we're going to teach you guys how to properly handle a knife and you'll also be learning some hand to hand combat. Any questions?" Bellamy asked, looking out over the group.
Jamie walked up to stand beside him with a small smile on her face as she turned towards the group. "Okay, so Bellamy will be showing some hand to hand techniques and I'll be working with the knife."
"Octavia and Clarke you guys can start with me." Bellamy added, nodding to Jamie.
Jasper and Monty looked at one another with a grin, causing Jamie to roll her eyes. She handed them each a larger knife and pulled hers out of her belt. "Okay, we're just starting with the proper way to hold...yeah, Jazz that's not right." She shook her head before walking over to the boy and moving his hand to grasp the knife correctly by the handle. Monty watched her before shaking his head at his friend. Jasper grinned up at them and moved his hand again before Jamie quirked a brow at him.
"You deliberately disobeying me now?"
His eyes widened and he immediately shook his head. "No, no, I'm sorry."
She arched a brow at Monty who had a wide grin on his face. She slowly walked over to Jasper before wrapping an arm around his shoulder, pulling him into her side. "Jazz, you know how I hate when you purposely do stuff to irritate me. I love you to bits but I still think you deserve some kind of punishment."
Jasper paled and started shaking his head, a grin tugging his lip. "Please don't."
She laughed before wrestling the boy to the ground. Her legs wrapped around his and she pulled his arm behind his head, drawing the attention of the others. "Maybe Jamie should teach us the hand to hand stuff." Octavia called out with a laugh.
"I tap out! I tap out!" Jasper called frantically, trying to escape the hold she had on him.
"You need to learn to break out of a hold Jazz!" Jamie yelled back at the boy, rolling them over and putting her hands behind his head, shifting her legs to wrap around his middle.
"Where the hell did you learn that from?"
She grinned at Bellamy before rolling once again so her back was flat on the ground. "My father taught me."
"She's used it as a way to torture us for years!" Jasper breathlessly replied, face turning red from the new hold Jamie had him in.
"Tap out!" Monty called, laughing as Jasper glared at him from the ground.
Jamie leaned up to look at Jasper and eased up on the hold. "Come on, get out!"
"I can't!" He replied, turning his pleading gaze up to hers.
She instantly released him and climbed to her feet, bending down to give him a hand. "Sorry Jazzy, thought you'd be able to get out."
"Okay, back to work!" Bellamy called out, grinning at her before turning back to what he was doing.
Jamie turned back to the boys, spending a few minutes briefing them on the basics. "The main thing is to not let anyone take it from you so we'll just start the lesson off with you guys attempting to keep your knife." Jamie stated, walking to Monty first. "This kind of goes along with the hand to hand combat training that Bellamy is doing so you'll understand it more once you have those lessons." She moved behind Monty and cleared her throat. "Okay, so let's say your enemy comes up behind you and wraps an arm around you like this," She wrapped her arms around him tightly and he immediately pulled her forwards and off her feet before freeing himself. "Great job!"
He turned towards her with a small smile, waiting for her next instructions. "Okay, and if I try to come at you when the knife is pointed at me then I'll grab your wrist versus going straight towards the knife."
Monty twisted his wrist to keep a hold of the knife, a question in his eyes when he met her gaze.
"Okay, perfect!" She stated happily before moving to Jasper.
"And Jazz if I do the same thing to you and try to get your knife..." She wrapped her arms around him and tried reaching for his knife only to be brutally head butted. She screamed out and dropped to her knees behind Jasper as his head made contact with her nose. Her hands moved to the sensitive spot where blood was gushing down her face.
"What'd you do?!" Monty yelled out, running to help the girl. He pushed her head back and took off his jacket, shoving it to her nose.
"Shit, Jamie! I'm so sorry! I didn't even...I wasn't thinking!" Jasper sputtered out, staring at Jamie with wide eyes.
Monty was holding Jamie's head back so the blood would hopefully clot and stop streaming down her face. Her hands were clinched into fists at her side and she gritted her teeth as pain flooded through her.
"Move, let me see it." Clarke pushed Monty out of the way and pulled the jacket away, analyzing her wound. "Jesus Jasper, you broke it!"
Jasper's cheeks reddened and his eyes drifted to the ground. "I'm so sorry."
Bellamy and Octavia stood back with anxious expressions as they watched Clarke struggle to stop the bleeding. Clarke groaned before looking at Jasper. "Take off your shirt, I need something better than this." She tossed the jacket back to Monty while Jasper pulled off his shirt. She tore off two long pieces and gently shoved them into Jamie's nostrils, flinching back when she screamed out in pain.
Jasper groaned and lightly placed a hand on Jamie's shoulder. "I am so sorry Jamie. I didn't mean to hurt you."
"It's not like it's the first time I've had to see Clarke or mother because I got injured, it's okay Jazz." Jamie replied quietly, grabbing his hand and squeezing it lightly.
"I feel terrible." He mumbled.
She looked at him out of the corner of her eye with her head still tilted back. "Don't, please just don't worry about it. It'll heal."
"Plus, she'll have an awesome looking bruise that we can create a story for." Monty added, winking at Jasper.
Bellamy and Octavia stood back watching the trio with amazement in their eyes. The boy literally broke a bone and now the injured person was helping him to feel better. They truly were a supportive little group.
Jamie refocused her attention straight ahead and reached up and grabbed Jasper's arm. "I think today's session is done. Can you get me back to camp Jazz?" She looked at everyone else standing there and smiled lightly. "Bell, can you show them at least a few techniques before you come back?"
He nodded at her as Jasper helped her walk back to camp.
"Jamie, do you need me to come back and help you..." Clarke was cut off by Jamie shaking her head. "I got it Clarke, thanks!"
"You know, it's kind of funny how this all happened. I was just talking to Bellamy about how I wanted to be stronger and now I have a broken nose that will help me look like a freaking badass. In a twisted kind of way, you helped me Jazz." She grinned at him but he just shook his head. "And it's the first time you've ever broken a bone. I mean black eye, sprained ankle, concussion even but there hasn't been a broken bone yet."
He smiled then, eyes focused on the ground. "I remember the concussion. That was...I felt so bad. Abby was so pissed."
"I wonder how my mother is."
He looked down at her then and smiled sympathetically. "Well, if I know Abby and I'm pretty sure I do, she's up there fighting to get down here. She'd do anything for you two."
Jamie nodded, eyes focused on their path. "We need Monty to fix the wristbands so we can at least let them know we're alive."
"Hey, we'll fix it. Monty's good, you of all people know that."
"I'll look at it when we get back and see if I can help him. Maybe you can look into it too?"
He nodded with a smile. "Yeah, I'd be happy to help if I can."
The two ended up in the dropship with a few of the wristbands in their hands. About an hour later Monty walked in and shook his head at the pair. "What are you two doing?"
"We're not breaking anything Mon, don't worry." Jamie replied with a grin, still looking at the band in her hand.
He sat down beside them and looked at what Jasper had done with the one he was playing with. Monty arched a brow at the boy before he froze, his eyes widening.
"Oh, sorry I was just messing around with that." Jasper went to move the band but Monty grabbed his hand.
"Wait, let me see that. Did you run the wire under the interceptors?"
Jasper nodded and Jamie looked up to watch Monty's expression. "Think it'll work if you bypass the setup?"
Monty nodded and climbed to his feet, Jamie and Jasper following.
There were footsteps behind them but they all remained focused on what Monty was doing.
"Jamie, can I check on your nose?"
She glanced over her shoulder at Clarke and arched a brow. "Can it wait? We think we figured out the wristbands."
"I didn't know you knew how to do that stuff." Octavia stated with a small, impressed smile.
Jamie blushed lightly and shrugged, returning her attention to the band in Monty's hand. "I grew up around an engineer."
Monty snorted and shook his head. "I'm not an engineer."
"No, but my father was." Jamie replied with a smirk.
Monty looked at her and his mouth dropped open. "Ouch."
"Will we be able to talk to them?" Clarke asked, stepping forward.
Monty shook his head, handing the band to Jamie. "No, it would be more like Morse code."
Jamie glanced up again when Octavia stepped closer, peering over her shoulder. Finn and Bellamy walked in then and both started questioning what they were doing.
"Can we please have a little bit of quiet to figure this out?" Monty asked, looking at the boys. Clarke and Octavia both backed away with apologetic smiles and the trio resumed working.
A current started humming through the band and Jamie quickly grabbed one of the wires to connect it to the others, essentially completing the circuit. There was a spark and she jumped when it shocked her, laughing nervously as she connected the wires.
"You okay?"
She nodded to Jasper, eyes focused on the band.
"Careful, Jamie." Monty whispered, eyes watching her every move.
She nodded, remaining focused on the wires in her hands. She usually only helped with these sort of things as she had nowhere near the experience or skill that Monty did. She jumped when the current shocked her again and she shook her head. "This one's tricky."
"Come on, you've done ones like this before."
Her eyes met Monty's briefly before she nodded again and resumed what she was doing. "You are more equipped to handle this. Why am I doing it?"
"I have another task." He replied, rerouting the currents and wiring in the band he was holding. "You can do this."
"Man, Spunky, you really can do anything huh?"
"Sure can Space Walker. What, you think a broken nose will stop me?" She grinned at Finn before turning back to her work. Monty helped her complete the task and they both looked up at one another anxiously. Monty arched an eyebrow at her and she nodded to Jasper.
"You want to do the honors?" Monty asked with a timid smile.
Jasper hesitantly looked at Jamie, his features nervous. "No, I don't think I should."
She nodded encouragingly to him and pointed to a hole on the band. "Just do it. That port right there."
Jasper reached forward and slowly did as he was told, jumping back when it buzzed. All of the wristbands hummed in unison, sending a shock to those that wore them, and Jamie and Monty made eye contact with a dismal look that said it all.
Clarke stepped forward after seeing Jamie's expression.
"What happened?"
Monty scratched his head before tossing the band to the side. "It didn't work."
"I think we fried all the wristbands." Jamie added quietly.
Jasper sighed and retreated to the nearest wall, slowly sliding down against it. Finn stormed out with Clarke on his tail and Bellamy stood in the doorway, watching as Octavia moved to comfort Jasper. Monty looked up at Jamie and smiled softly. "I'm sorry birdie." He whispered, knowing how important it was to Jamie for them to contact the Ark so no one else would have to be sacrificed for the lack of air. She shrugged, a little bit disheartened, before her mind went back to the first time he called her birdie.
"Jazzy! Come back!" Jamie's small legs thundered down the hall after the boy, both of them laughing as they ran.
Monty chased after her, struggling to keep up with the speedy girl. "Jamie! Stop running so fast! I can't catch up with you!"
She squealed in laughter as they rounded another corner and her mouth dropped when she saw the giant hole in the floor with the signs around it, getting repaired. Jasper had run around the hole but Jamie went for the shorter route. Her legs carried her over the wide hole easily and Monty stopped abruptly, watching in amazement.
After she finally caught Jasper, Monty was able to rejoin the two, trying to calm his breathing. "I can't believe you jumped over it! You were like a little birdie flying in the sky!"
She blushed and shrugged nonchalantly. "It was no big deal! I do that stuff all the time with my daddy."
"Is he training you to be a bird?" Jasper asked her with a dimpled, toothless smile.
"No! He's helping me learn to protect myself. I can run and I know how to fight now."
"Cool." Both boys chimed in unison.
Monty pushed her playfully, grinning at Jasper. "Does that mean if we get in trouble we can blame you since you can run faster than us?"
"No!" Jamie stuck her tongue out at the boy before turning and sprinting away from them, both chasing after her with squeals of laughter.
"Come back birdie!" Monty yelled after her, a bright smile on his face.
Her smile faltered at the memory and she dropped the bands onto the table, running a hand down her face. She frowned when she felt the swelling in her face.
"You okay?"
She groaned when Monty asked before meeting his gaze. "Stop asking me if I'm okay. I appreciate the gesture but...I'm not that girl."
"I know. You're more than capable of taking care of yourself. I'm just checking on you." Monty smiled at his friend before picking up the wristband Jamie had been working on.
"Sit there at your own risk. I think I might be cursed."
Jamie and Monty both turned when Jasper spoke quietly to Octavia.
"They call me a risk taker and Jasper, you're not cursed." The younger Blake spoke quietly as she placed her hand on Jasper's knee.
"I'm lucky then."
"No, brave." Octavia smiled and leaned down to meet Jasper's gaze.
He arched a brow at her, scoffing as he did. "Brave? For getting my face bashed in, breaking my sister's nose or ruining any chance at contacting the Ark?"
Octavia gently ran her fingers down Jasper's swollen cheek and shook her head. "For standing up to a bully and trying to help everyone."
Monty nudged Jamie and she glanced over at Bellamy who was still watching Jasper and Octavia with a small smile on his face. She turned back to Monty and arched a brow and he rolled his eyes at her before they both turned back to Jasper.
"Yeah, and failing both times."
Octavia sighed and leaned closer to him. "I didn't see anyone else step up. Did you?"
Jasper's cheeks reddened and Jamie found herself smiling at the scene.
"And I don't care how things turned out, you were brave to try. And bravery is always rewarded." She leaned in and kissed Jasper on the cheek before walking out with Bellamy, a small smile on both of their faces.
Jasper looked up at Jamie and Monty with wide eyes and both gave him a thumbs up in return.
A/N: I know nothing about engineering or mechanics so if what I said makes no sense and isn't a real thing I apologize!
