Returning to the Real Path, Chapter Two: A Dangerous Side Quest

The curriculum, Kamkyung decided, was horrible.

He knew that he wasn't supposed to care much, since it was just temporary and all that, but he couldn't stand the complete outrage he felt towards the entire plan scheme. Push ups and pull ups at such a young age? What were they, soldiers? What on Earth was this atrocity?

He had gone to the vice principal, who was said to be the one dealing with the curriculum, complaining about the toll this could have on their physical health, not to mention their mental health when they failed to complete it. The only response had been "Failure must be a part of their lives at first. They deserve it."

That only angered him even more, and he decided that this couldn't be left alone.

Of course, as someone who had been trained to betray one's trust since he was a preteen, he knew that eventually they would have the biggest impact when he left.

But that didn't mean that he couldn't make this school a better place before he did.

He wanted to make a positive change for once. One that didn't work in his benefit. A sacrificial one.

And so, on their first official week in, he had them all sit on the gym floor, and, as he looked at each and every one of them in the eye, he declared, "The first thing I want you guys to do before we do anything is to think about yourselves. I want you to tap into your hearts, and ask yourselves, who am I?"

Of course, the kids were confused. Jiwung was particularly perplexed, shown when he rose his hand to ask, "What's the point of this? Don't we have to do our usual 100 push ups and pull ups?"

"I-It's according to the curriculum," the shy male from before, Nam Kangdae, chipped in softly. "I-If we don't do it, we-"

"I'm your P.E. teacher, guys, and I will tell you that the curriculum you guys have is messed up. I have my own code of honour, even in my old job, and I won't let you suffer," he sternly answered. "If they want you to do these things, they should have built your mental strength first. But they didn't. I see now what the head teacher wanted me to do."

Indeed he had. After the day he had arrived, a Friday, he had stayed up all night, staring at the ceiling. He had pondered hard on what he could do to make it better for the kids. It was then that some of the words he had said finally made sense. Of course, he was yet to figure out the rest of them, but for now he wanted to focus on both sides. In fact, he considered this a side quest for him. Plus, it could help with the mission.

A part of him yelled that he should leave the kids out of this, but he waved it off. His real job, his loyalty to the boss came first and foremost. No matter what, he couldn't let him down. Even if he had to break twenty hearts.

He knew that he was going to regret it, but he pushed it all in. After all, it was a mission in its deepest essence.

He inhaled, trying to hide the unease that still ate away at his heart as he watched them close their eyes and mumble away to themselves. It was like they were talking to their subconscious, which was adorable and showed just how innocent children could be.

Well, children unlike him.

He involuntarily shuddered as he remembered some dark memories he had. The only reason he had become a spy was because he hadn't had any other choice...

He had once dreamt of being a teacher, if he recalled right. But it had been crushed horribly when his family had sold him away. He had taken up his boss's offer to be trained, and it had resulted in his current job as a secret agent for the mafia.

How funny life could be. He never thought it could have a sense of humor. A strange one.

Huh, fate was weird for sure.

He inhaled, and he patiently waited for the kids to finish before he instructed them, "Go lie on the floor and try to ponder about yourselves even more."

The kids shared a confused glance, and he was struck by how it seemed like they were having a telepathic meeting with each other. He had taken years to be able to do that, and yet these kids were doing it at such a young age?

"I guess it's a fresh change," the girl, Kim Seongwoon, shrugged, plopping to the ground.

The others slowly did the same, albeit a bit more hesitant in it, which somehow made his heart ache, only fuelling his confusion. He only had one question in his mind.

How were these kids making him feel new things?

But he shrugged it off. He had to focus on the work he had to do, "Alright, I want you to focus hard and attempt to make your subconsciousness come out. Try talking to it. If it pulls you down, fight it. Don't let it push you down. You're strong. You can do it if you truly believe in yourselves."

The kids all complied, eyes closed as they tried their best to follow their teacher's instructions. He gently nudged them to the right direction once in a while, and soon was watching the kids on his chair while reading the backgrounds of the various teachers here.

He had his suspicions already, but he knew that it was better safe than sorry. He couldn't let these kids get hurt by the teachers-

Wait hold up, did he just express concern for the kids?
