Bittersweet Childhood Memories

Watching the huge door, Mao Mao didn't know how to feel. He felt pain. Sorrow. Worry. Too many emotions for the nine-year-old aspiring hero. He didn't know much about them, but they were now jumbled up in his heart, mocking him, teasing him.

His eyes then looked at the cold windows, showing the snowy world outside, and he remembered what he was here to do.

He took in a deep breath. He could do this. He had to get Rose out of there. Whatever monster it was, he could handle it.

Deep breaths, then a knock.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

Inside the door, the room's inhabitant looked up, blinking in confusion as she heard a familiar voice from beyond the door.

Come on let's go out and play.

She stayed quiet, unable to say a thing. She couldn't. She couldn't go out and hurt him again.

I never see you anymore,

come out the door,

it's like you've gone away.

Mao Mao's little fists curled up as he remembered all his past memories with Rose.

We used to be best buddies, and now we're not. I wish you could tell me why.

Rose looked down. She couldn't tell him. It would only endanger him.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

It doesn't have to be a snowman.

Leaning against the door, Rose could only look down, tears in her eyes, before she called out to her from beyond, "Go away, Mao Mao. Leave me alone."

His eyes went wide, unable to believe what she was saying, but he soon sighed in defeat as he turned to leave.

Okay, bye...

Rose's heart broke a little hearing that. Yet she knew that this was for the better good. If only she could control her powers.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

Mao Mao was back after a month of training with his sisters, and he was much more optimistic than before. In fact...

Or ride our bike around the halls?

People looked at him weird, but he didn't care.

I think some company is overdue,

I've started talking to the pictures on the wall!

From inside, Rose had to hold back a chortle. That sounded like Mao Mao alright.

It gets a little lonely,

All these empty rooms,

Just watching the hours tick by.

Rose's guilt returned tenfold. She really felt bad now.

But then she heard the sound of a child attempting to say tick tock tick tock, and a small laugh escaped her mouth as she realised who was making that sound.

He was so adorable at times. She wanted to touch him, but she couldn't. All she could do was stay in that room until she could control her powers.

She couldn't believe it. Mao Mao's parents were dead. She had heard from some of the servants when they had brought her food, and she wished she hadn't. He was definitely mourning the loss now. She wished she could go out and mourn with them, but she couldn't. She had to stay in-

A knock.

A familiar one.

Her eyes widened. Was it him?

Rose, please,

I know that you're in there....

Her eyes watered. She wanted to! She really did! She wanted to say something, anything to soothe her friend's feelings.

People are asking whether you're here

They say "Have courage,"

and I'm trying to

I'm right out here for you,

Just let me in....

His voice was so raspy, so heartbroken, yet she couldn't do it. She couldn't go over there, twist the doorknob and let him in.

I only have you, Rose.

It's just you and me.

What are we gonna do?

She couldn't take it. The emotions...

She sunk to the floor, letting her tears fall down. She couldn't hold it in anymore. She had to let it all out.

Mao Mao was crying outside as well, but he gathered up the last bits of energy he had to sing the last verse.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

It doesn't have to be a snowman...

Both sides were crying. Lost. Alone. Lonely.

The door that separated them would scar them for life.

Yet there was hope.

Hope that they could get past this, and be together.
