Briefing
Author's note~ Oh my god, I am so sorry. I honestly have no excuse with how long this has gone without an update. So sorry about that I will try and update this a lot quicker than I have been... 2 years... 2 years I have left this story sit here without so much as an explanation. I'm so so sorry I'll be better about updating this. ~Lawliet TJ
It didn't take me long to get set up at the local police station. A task force had already been made. During the next week, I sat into a briefing with the police. Well, I personally did not sit in. Watari sat in with a computer hooked up for me to see and hear everything that was happening.
I was only half paying attention working on other parts of the case. I was waiting for the information that I had requested the police look for, not the information I already knew. Especially not the 21 additional people who called in claiming to be Kira. Obviously, a killer smart enough to figure out a way to kill without having to be there would be smart enough not to incriminate themselves.
"Concerning L's request to investigate the time of death," I heard one of the police officers say. I turned my focus solely to what he was saying. We found that all of them occurred between the hours of 4 pm and 2 am on weekdays local time with 68% occurring between 8 pm and 12 am. Weekends and holidays appear to be the exception to this rule."
There it is. The information I was looking for. I had already pieced this together beforehand, but I thought they should figure out the timeline so I could explain my thoughts rather than have them fall upon deaf ears.
"That information is extremely relevant for us it suggests that given the times of death our subject could very well be a student." Well, that seemed to get everyone's attention. "Based on the fact that Kira is only killing criminals I think it's safe to assume that he's driven by a very idealistic notion of justice. It's highly possible he may even aspire to be some sort of god-like figure. We are dealing with an individual who has a very childish concept of right and wrong."
They all looked baffled by the news. I understand why, a student, a mere child capable of killing hundreds? It sounded preposterous, however, preposterous is all that makes sense with this case. We are all in unknown territory with this case. A killer who can kill just by knowing a name and a face, that is about as preposterous as it gets. However, that's just part of my hypothesis still. I know he needs something since he couldn't kill me. However, could he kill with just a face? How about with just a name?
"Of course this is mere speculation at this point, but still I recommend you reexamine any assumptions you've made as to whether or not our suspect could be a student. You must consider every possibility. I believe that is the shortest root to finding and arresting Kira. Please continue with your report."
I had gone back to looking at my other findings trying to see what else I could piece together. Of course, I still knew more than I was telling the police, but I do not trust them fully. I gave them this, but I am looking at something specific in doing so. My thinking was interrupted as another member of the police force had read off their findings. Matsuda as his name was, had decided to share how rates of violent crime were dropping especially in Japan. That was expected with a killer like this on the loose.
"Thank you, everyone, I feel we are one step closer to finding Kira. Before I go, I'm afraid I have one additional request to make. This is directed to the teams investigating the victims, TV news, and internet. I would like you to go back and take a closer look at the exact way in which the victims' identities were made public. Be as thorough as possible. In particular, I want to know if photos of the victims were made available to the public in Japan." After that final request, the briefing was over.
Watari had returned back a while later making sure he wasn't followed here. I had gone back to work connecting pieces together as I looked up a couple more leads that were bugging me. There was one thing that I wasn't sure about, but all I could do was wait and see if the trap I set took hold.
The next day my suspicion was correct. The police were not to be trusted. Criminals started dying around the clock. One every hour as if to prove he isn't a student. The next day the same thing. I heard some of the officers start to miss the point of just how important this was. They were saying that it was less likely he was a student, but the probability has only increased in my eyes. Like a child rebelling Kira is proving what we already know, and giving us more information in the process. Information such as he has access to confidential police notes.
I couldn't help but get a little frustrated at how Kira's actions had gone completely over there heads. "You're missing the point, it does appear less likely now that Kira's a student. But that's not the message he's sending by doing this. Ask yourselves why every hour and why are these victims in prisons where they are sure to be discovered immediately. Why not other criminals like before? I believe Kira is telling us that not only can he kill from a distance, but he can also determine the time of death."
"But something's not right as soon as we began to suspect that Kira might be a student the pacing of the killings changed as if to contradict that theory. Coincidence? No. To convenient. This can only mean that Kira has access to police information. It's obvious now that this is a direct challenge to me." So Kira has found a way to obtain information from the task force headquarters. This is one fact that cannot be ignored, but what does he get out of all this? What is he hoping to achieve in the end?
Something is wrong. I wonder what end he has in mind? How could this help him benefit? Has he even realized that he's shown us this much? I can't help but feel as if I'm intentionally being lead into his game.
Within the next few days, more and more people resigned from the task force. Some of there arguments I can't help but ignore. They are right I never had to show my face, and no one knows who I am even now. I do have a plan in mind, but there is still too many people that I don't trust, too many unknown variables at the moment.
"Unlike someone, we know we are out there investigating this case with police IDs with our names and photos on them. Anybody with a computer can find out who we are. We don't hide our faces we're out in the open." Again, he's not wrong. I can't help but watch and wait this out. Soon enough the variables will fall into place.
I had called in the FBI to Japan to investigate the police and their families as soon as it was clear Kira knew private information. They had already started their investigation and had gathered intel on any family members cable of getting their hands on police information. It had been four days before I was given stacks of papers with the information I needed.
There are 141 people in the police force who have access to classified information regarding the investigation. I'm sure that somewhere in this list of police officers and the people closest to them we will find our suspect. I started looking through the pages reading everything and sparing no one. Anyone on these pages were potential suspects period.
