♥ Prologue: First Impressions Are Important ♥
A/N: Welcome to the first chapter of my book!! Remember, the hearts mean that its Frisk's POV. Okay, that's all, Enjoy!! :D
I combed out my stubborn brown hair roughly with a brush in one hand and squirmed into my shorts using the other. I threw aside the brush, frustrated and slipped into my oversized striped sweater. It had faded a bit, although I know not from what, I loved it nevertheless. It was my only outfit anyways. Pulling on a single black boot, I managed to catch a glimpse of myself in the slightly muddied mirror.
Despite my efforts, I still had a minor case of bed hair, and there were dark circles under my eyes from the lack of sleep I had last night.
I had moved the few belongings I owned into this tiny dorm all in one night, and although it took me until roughly three in the morning, a passerby had attempted to help me. I learned her name was Eliza, and she would be going to the same high school as me. That was really the only good thing about last night. During moving I had stubbed my toe on furniture at least thirty times and scraped my knee on a sharp corner of my bed's frame.
Suddenly my heart skipped a beat as I heard a bus impatiently beep twice outside. I stumbled out the door, being sure to lock it behind me, ran down the stairs and pushed myself out the door to see the old bus waiting for me. Some of its windows were broken, cracked, or even gone completely. That can't be safe, can it? My heart seemed to lurch as I boarded the bus, careful to take an empty seat.
I stumbled into my seat and shrugged off my backpack, wind blowing full on in my face since there was no window beside me to stop it. Now I see why nobody wanted this seat...
I felt the bus suddenly halt to a stop, sending me flying into the back of the seat in front of me, causing me to hit my head on the back of the seat. Thankfully the seat's back was cushioned so it only caused me a slight headache. After everyone had piled out of the bus, I made my way out its door and thanked the driver who only grumbled in the reply. The people around here didn't seem too friendly.
Looking up, I saw the dated building that stood before me that I would soon call school. Its walls were cracked and sprinkled with illegible graffiti that covered most of its exterior, and most of its windows were foggy and shattered. Chiseled into the front of the building was a sign that read "Accreton High." Trudging up the cracked cement steps, I was met with a familiar face.
"Frisk!" Eliza said, jogging up to meet me.
"Eliza," I grinned as she pulled me into a quick hug.
"So, how are you liking it up here in Accreton? Since you're you know, new and all?"
I thought it was pretty strange considering how grumpy everyone here always was and how run-down and dilapidated everything was. I suppose that is normal though, right? Considering I don't know any other towns it must be. "It's a charming place. I quite like it," I told her before adding, "The view from my dorm is pretty amazing. I can see like half of the city from there!"
Ever since I moved to Accreton everything had changed. It was quite a small town. All my memories are from inside the walls of this charming little town. It is said that the people there were either there because they had done something bad or because nobody wanted them. Either way, something had happened to them in the course of their life that they had ended up here. Whether it be the loss of their parents, not being adopted or even committing murder the reasons ranged from small crimes to extreme measures. What was my case? Well, it's a special one, I guess. But that's a story for another time. Today was my first day, and I pushed away all thoughts of my past life and focused on starting anew in this new place that I was already fond of.
"That's awesome!" She opened the doors to the school for me, "Here, follow me and I'll show you where the lockers are, so you can set down that backpack. Maybe we can even talk for a bit before the first bell!" I nodded in response and followed her until she stopped suddenly.
Brushing her dirty blonde stray-away hair behind her ear she whispered something inaudible over all the commotion in my ear and pointed down the hall. I followed where her finger was pointing to see a large group of monsters and humans alike circling around something. She tugged at my sleeve, wanting to go over and I begrudgingly gave in and pushed through the crowd to see who was fighting.
It was a tall human with ruffled brown hair that fell over his deep hazel eyes who had a cell phone in his hand and was cracking up as if it was the funniest thing in the world. He was around 5'7 which I thought was tall until I turned to his foe who standing in front of him. I knew him from the whispers in the crowd about him, his name was Nick.
I guessed that his foe was around 6'2. They sported a white turtleneck and a short black jacket on top. He had a poker face on. He reached out a hand for the cell phone, but the Nick just scoffed. He threw his cigar aside and stomped on it. The fight was going to start.
The first one to throw a punch was the shorter, but quicker Nick, but the skeleton simply grabbed his fist and twisted it, forcing him to bend over so he didn't break his arm. He snatched the cell phone and threw it aside to a short blonde kid who stumbled to catch it and succeeded. He thanked the skeleton briefly and ran off with his phone. The skeleton let go of Nick's arm while he clenched his teeth, writhing in suppressed fury.
His eye glowed an unwavering gold, looking for a new challenger. His gaze flickered briefly to me for a second. His mouth was in a thin line, an unmoving poker face he kept so well. He lit a new cig and looked around once more. He spun on his boots and strode down the hall and around the corner. I listened to the sound of his boots striding down the hallway fade away until I snapped out of my daze and turned to Eliza.
"That. Was. So. Cool," She squealed. I wasn't as excited to see two people beat each other up for no reason.
"Who is he anyways- the skeleton I mean," I asked, my eyes briefly flicking back to the corner he had disappeared behind.
"Him? I keep forgetting you're new here. Oh- and that's G. He's been here for a while, and has made quite the reputation for himself," she elaborated, "Anyways, he's pretty much a flirt, so don't get worked up over him," she told me, "I mean- you saw the girls at the fight, right?"
Come to think about it I wasn't really paying attention to everyone else during the fight, but I nodded my head anyway.
"Yeah, um, so what's your schedule-maybe we have something together?" I asked, changing the subject. She pulled out a crumpled-up piece of paper and compared it to mine.
"We have Science, English and... Homeroom together," She said smiling up at me. I smiled happily, looking back down at my schedule. I had English, Science, Art and lastly Math. I walked with Eliza to my locker and wrote down its number on the back of my schedule, so I would not forget. She rambled on about some new kid she toured and how cute he was while I zoned out, memorizing the way to get to English class. On the way there I heard faint forced giggling. I swiveled my head to see two monsters in mini-skirts and white hoodies. One was a cat-like monster, with a long tail swishing slowly under her miniskirt and the other girl whose appearance resembled that of a lion.
They were all over him, and he looked quite fascinated by how hard they were trying. Then as one got bored and left, the other pulled in him into a sloppy kiss, and his orbs flicked over to my disgusted unblinking eyes, and he shot me a wink. He didn't even break eye contact with me as the girl made out with him. My face contorted in disgust. The girl seemed to be enjoying it more than him by the look that he shot me.
"FRISK!"
I snapped out of my daze thanks to Eliza's scream and whipped back around to meet her worried eyes.
"Frisk," she said managing to calm her voice, "You alright? You were staring at them, you know?"
"Sorry, I just got distracted for a second," I explained, looking down, scarred.
"You're not hitting on him-right? He's such a player," She asked, concern lacing her words. I turned back again and saw that G was gone, and in his place was a furious cat monster who shot me a glare and a low hiss.
"No way-my standards would never stoop that low," I said, turning back to Eliza and giving her a reassuring smile. She nervously giggled and hurried into our next class without me.
"Wait up-" I began before I felt a bony hand on my shoulder. I whipped around to be met with a towering skeleton- G.
"Well, well, well. You're a new face," he said, smirking down at me.
"Yeah, well I'd like to keep it that way," I said before spinning on my heel and walking towards English.
"I saw ya watching me kiss," He said, catching up to me far too easily.
"No, I didn't see anything," I lied. This is going too far, he needs to back off.
"You don't have to lie. Although I wouldn't mind showing you a demonstration of what happened, sweetheart," He smirked at my poor excuse for a lie, taking a step closer to me.
"Sweetheart? I'm not one of your little girlfriends,"
"Not yet, you're not, sweetheart," he moved closer to me.
"Ugh," I turned around, not wanting to show my red-tinged cheeks, and partially also because I was annoyed at his poor attempts at flirting.
I strode into the classroom, writhing in anger at how easily I got flustered. I sat down next to Eliza who was talking to a dog monster who resembled a human strongly. He had shaggy brown hair and dog ears, but the tail of a dog and human skin and eyes behind black-rimmed glasses. He laughed at a joke I presumed Eliza had made, and she giggled slightly. She turned around, still laughing.
"Oh, hey Frisk, this is my friend, Dan," She said, making a flourishing gesture towards him, "Frisk, Dan. Dan, Frisk."
I smiled politely and said hello. We made some small talk until the late bell rang out and the teacher introduced himself and took attendance.
"Grillby?"
"Here."
"Frisk?"
"Here."
"Gaster Sans?" He tried to pronounce but it came out wrong. A few snickers were heard in the room.
"Gaster? Sans?" He repeated, this time pronouncing it right. The room fell silent. He began to move on.
"Fukufire?"
"Here~!"
"Dan?"
"Here!"
Then the door burst open, to reveal, you guessed it,
G. He shot a glare at him expecting an explanation, and all eyes were on him, including mine.
"Sorry I uh," He searched his skull for an excuse, "I was in the bathroom and didn't realize that the bell had rung."
"This is the first day, so I'll let you off easy. Don't let it happen again, do you understand?" The teacher reprimanded.
"Yes, Sir." He said nodding and taking a seat in the back of the class and looking down, bored, at the holes in his palms.
Our teacher introduced his class like normal, but then his demeanor changed drastically at his last statement.
"This is Accreton high, and you all know the rules I presume?" he added, looking at me, "I know that there are some newbies that may not be aware of the rules, so I am required, as your first class, to recite them."
Everyone groaned in annoyance.
"Each of you has three warnings," he continued, "You will lose a warning whenever your grades slip, or you do something wrong. Every time you lose a warning a symbol will appear permanently on your body," he explained. "If you get more than 3 marks, you will be punished. I think you all know what I mean by that. These rules will apply in all classes. Lastly, you have two outfits, one for school and other casual activities, and another for prom or other formal events. You will be given accessories if you do well in school and or help out by doing extra things in the community." he concluded, "Do you all understand?"
"Yes," we all echoed although I was unsure of what he meant about "being punished."
"Alright, everyone takes your books out, and turn to page one hundred and fifty..." He said as I zoned out, thinking about what the consequences could be?
Detention?
Recorded on your record?
Getting suspended?
Getting expelled?
Or even death?
I was snapped back to reality when I heard the bell chime out in uneven rings, making me jump in my seat. When had I gotten so jumpy?
I made my way through the crowd to my next class, science. I tripped on my shoelaces and fell face forward, and someone stepped on my hair, and I yelped as I got walked over by careless students. The steps stopped as quickly as they had started, and I rolled over unsurely and saw a bony hand extended towards me. I flinched at the sight of the hole in his palm, knowing it could only belong to one skeleton. I took it gratefully and it pulled me up to my feet swiftly. I looked up to see yours truly, G, who was standing in the middle of the crowd. The students flowed past him while he stood firm, parting the sea of students.
"You okay dove?" he said, nonchalantly. I hesitated before answering, unsure if he was tricking me so that he could beat me up.
"Yeah, actually, thanks," I said a bit surprised by his sudden change of attitude towards me. He adjusted his jacket awkwardly. I realized how archaic his style of clothing was, it being a white turtleneck, loose black joggers and a black and white fluffy jacket.
"I saw you getting trampled by those guys. I can't walk by that without feeling guilty for not helping ya, you know?" he said trying to explain.
"Thanks. Being new here I didn't know you could get literally walked all over," I said, making him chuckle. It wasn't a spiteful laugh like the one he did at the fight or a fake one like he did when those girls flirted with him, this one sounded genuine, real. Maybe, just maybe, he wasn't just some flirt? I thought to myself.
"Yeah, that's high school for ya," he chuckled with me, "Where are you headed?"
"Science," I replied.
"I could show ya where it is- I mean since 'm heading there too."
"Alright," I said, and he took my hand, and enclosed it in his bony fingers. They were surprisingly warm and filled me with a feeling of... protection? I shook that thought away, concluding that I was just cold. I looked up at him, confused at his action.
"I'll show you a shortcut," he said before looking down at my expression, "What, did ya think I was gonna make out with ya, doll face?" he smirked leaning over to meet my eyes and puffing a cloud of smoke in my face.
"No!" I coughed and looked away, trying to hide the red that rose to my cheeks by using the disguise the smoke cloud provided. He pressed his hands against my locker like in the movies, cornering me. My cheeks burned embarrassingly vibrantly at his action.
"Are ya sure, sweetheart it sure looks like you sure want me to," he whispered in my ear, dragging those last three words out, his lips barely brushing my neck. I guess that is true since I'm not really doing anything to stop him... I shuddered and squeezed my eyes shut in anticipation.
Then I heard his laughter again. What? I thought. I fluttered open my eyes and glimpsed at him, he was doubling over, cracking up with his hand on his head.
"Pfft, H-Hah! Your f-face!" he howled, unable to speak steadily because of how hard he was laughing. Nope, he's still a flirt. A brilliantly clever flirt. Ugh. I hate him. I thought to myself.
"Not funny!" I said mentally slapping myself for getting so flustered.
"Alright, alright," He said, calming down. He took my hand again, "Just don't let go, kid," and with that being said we were whisked off to another hallway.
This hallway seemed more damaged than the rest, and it's walls features were comprised of long cracks, unpainted sections and even a hole in it. The one's walls even had some greenery seeping through its cracks, such as little weeds and variations of wildflowers. Remembering one of the flowers that had sprouted on the wall my eyes shifted to it. I had read about it from a book that had been left in my dorm. It said that this kind of flower was called an echo flower, and if you listen carefully enough, you can hear it repeat the last thing it heard. There appeared to be many lining this corridor.
"Thanks," I said, still feeling a little woozy from the teleportation and his idea of a joke.
"Anytime, sweetheart," he let go of my hand and went into a classroom nearby, and I felt the warmth of his hand flood away from mine, leaving mine feeling cold. I sighed, shaking the thought of wanting to hold his hand away from my head.
Thankfully were no fights going on inside, and the classroom didn't seem to be nearly as damaged as the hall that I saw before entering. I looked around the classroom, unsure of where I should sit.
Nick, the guy from the fight? No.
G? Nope.
Flame girl who is waving me over to the seat next to her? That's a start.
I went over to the flame girl and took my seat next to her.
"Fukufire," she introduced herself, "But, I mean, you can call me Fuku."
She seems nice. "I'm Frisk," I replied.
"So, you're new here, right?" I nodded. "Soo~ have you got any crushes yet?"
"Pfft. No, not yet. I'm just trying to find my next class in this maze that you call a school hallway," I scoffed at the thought of having a crush. Even the word sounded childish.
"Not yet," she cocked an eyebrow, and before I could object she added, "I won't bother you for it, I don't blame you. The guys in this school aren't exactly that likable," she joked.
The teacher walked in, and the class quieted down, and everyone's attention snapped to her. She was a slender blue spider monster with eight arms, four on each side, each holding a different item, a clipboard, a cracked coffee mug, an ancient phone, and a slightly crumpled up stack of papers. She wore her black hair in a tight bun. She looked up from her clipboard and smiled at the quiet class.
"Hello. Welcome, I will be your science teacher for this semester. I assume you all completed your summer assignments, correct?"
The class groaned out a yes.
"I need it by the end of class today. Don't forget. Pass these down. I expect these done by this Friday, understand"
Another yes came from us. The dog monster in front of me tossed me a slightly faded worksheet which I scanned over.
Is everything here either broken or a really old hand-me-down? Still, this is a ton of material.
"You can't do this assignment the night before, so I suggest you get on this now," she suggested.
Challenge accepted, I thought, determined to procrastinate like usual. I put my head on my hand and looked around the room absentmindedly.
"Today we will be performing our first lab," she took a long sip from her coffee, "You will be assigned to groups of three randomly. I will pick your names out of a hat- oh and the groups are permanent. There will be no trading of partners. Understood?"
"Yes," the class said.
"Alright, the first group will be, Fukufire, Bratty, and Catty," she said as three girls squealed and sat down at a table.
"Next, Lesser Dog, Grillby, and Dan," they high fived and sat down at another table and talked.
"Greater Dog, Mettaton, Flowey," I snickered at the confused bark, singsong voice, and groan that came from that mismatched group as they sat down.
"Lastly, Chara, Frisk and G," She concluded. My heart sank. I was stuck with Chara, who gets kicks out of starting food fights, and G, the flirt.
What better way to start off the year at my new school than this?
