Prologue

Third-person Hiccup:
"Okay, I shot a night fury," Hiccup said awkwardly. Once again, screwed up and now has the full angry attention of all the villagers of Berk. Stoick's face was beyond fury when he heard Hiccup, once again, hit a supposed 'night fury.' He grabbed his son by the gruff of his fur coat and started dragging him home. "It's not like the last few times, dad! I really actually hit it!" Hiccup started and struggled to point in the direction he saw the dragon fall as he continued, "It fell. Just off Raven Point, let's get a search party out there before it-".

"STOP!" Stoick yelled, letting go of his son. "Every time you step outside, disaster falls. Don't you see I have bigger problems here?" This made Hiccup flinched slightly, 'bigger than your own son?' He thought as Stoick continued to rant, "Winter is almost here, and I have an entire village to feed!" Hiccup, not able to respond to that, seriously mumbles louder than he meant, "between you and me, I think the village could do with a little less feeding, don't you think?" Those near moaned and touched their stomachs or glared at the runt while Stoick fumed again, "This isn't a joke, Hiccup! Why can't just stay home like your told!"

"Dad, I can't help it! When I see a dragon, I just have to". He motioned a neck-breaking gesture with his hands as he said, "kill it, you know? It's just... who I am, Dad".

"Oh," Stoick says, face palming, "you are many things Hiccup, but a dragon slayer? Is not one of them", Hiccup felt hurt by his father's words, "get back to the house" he then motioned to Gobber, his most trusted friend and village blacksmith, "and make sure he gets there."

"He never listens!"

"Uhu, runs in the family."

"And when he does its just with this, disappointed scowl like someone skimmed off all the meat in his sandwich," Hiccup then imitates Stoick as he continues, "Excuse me, barmaid! I believe you brought me the wrong offspring! I wanted an extra-large boy with beefy arms, extra guts, and glory on the side. This here", he motions to the floor as if there was a baby in a crib, "this is a talking fishbone!" It hurt Hiccup to say it out loud; however, it did also help relieve his anger.

Gobber, seeing how hurt Hiccup was, decided to try saying something helpful, "listen, Hiccup, It's not so much of what you look like. It's what's inside that he can't stand". Hiccup gave a 'your kidding, right?' Type of face, then went back to his trusty sarcasm, "Thank you, for, summing that up." Hiccup turns and opens the door as Gobber quickly added, "the point is, stop trying to be something you're not." Crestfallen and defeated, Hiccup turns quickly to Gobber and says, "I just want to be one of you guys," while thinking, 'I'll prove to you all that I took down a night fury!'

'I can kill dragons, I can kill dragons!', Hiccup thought to himself as he rose his dagger high over his head, 'I can do this, I HAVE to do this, I have to prove myself to the village and my father!', he glanced at the dragon's eye, he thought he could see... 'NO! I HAVE to do this!" Hiccup shook his head and closed his eyes. He heard a moaning sound and a thud, 'did the dragon just faint? Could he be as scared as... as for me?' His arms fell; he looked at the dragon and horror-filled him. "I did this," he mumbled out loud and stared at the trapped dragon. He was about just to leave the dragon, then stopped and turned back. 'I can't leave him like this...'. Then, Hiccup did the last thing a Viking would do... he cut the dragon loose.

"Remember, dragons will always," Gobber bent closer to Hiccup, "Always, go for the kill." Gobber pulled him to his feet and walked out of the arena. After getting home last night from letting the dragon lose, Stoick told Hiccup that he was starting dragon training today. Though he tried to dissuade him, Stoick made up his mind saying, "you must walk like us, and talk like us, and think like us, no more of..." he gestured to all of Hiccup, "this."

So now, Hiccup had to deal with the sniggering of the other teens and his own thoughts. The night fury had him pinned; it was about to 'go for the kill,' but then just roared and flew off. When he replayed his actions to the gronkle, the dragon didn't hesitate to blow him to smithereens nearly. So it left him to wonder, 'so why didn't he, why didn't the night fury?'

Hiccup walked into the cove he found the night fury in. He brought a shield and a fish; however, the shield lodged between two rocks and wouldn't budge. 'Please don't kill me,' he thought as he picked up the fish and continued to walk further into the night fury's territory. The dragon was watching his every move from behind a boulder. When he crept forward, Hiccup whipped around to face the dragon. He sniffed the air and got into a defensive stance. Hiccup held out the fish as far as he could. The dragon's eyes quickly went squared but then slit again as it sensed Hiccup's dagger. He pushed his fur aside and reached for his dagger defensively. The dragon growled deeper, which made Hiccup jump. This time he grabbed it with two fingers and dropped it. The dragon then motioned for him to throw it in the lake. Hiccup did better and kicked it. As suddenly as the dagger sunk, the dragon sat down, and its eyes squared once more. Hiccup, again held out the fish for the dragon. It moved forward and opened its toothless maw. "Huh, Toothless, I could have sworn you had-" the dragon's teeth suddenly appeared and snatched up the fish, causing Hiccup to recoil.

"-teeth," he finished his thought. The dragon then slowly advanced towards Hiccup. Fearing that the dragon was still hungry and was thinking of juicy Viking fishbone in front of him, Hiccup started backing away. "Um, no, no... no, I- I don't have anymore," he said as he hit a boulder. The dragon stood over him and started... gagging? Then he opened his mouth, and half the fish fell into his lap.

The dragon forced Hiccup to eat, swallow, and like the raw, regurgitated fish. Hiccup did everything the dragon wanted. When he smiled, Toothless, the name he gave the dragon, tried to smile in turn. But when Hiccup reached for the dragon, it growled and shot off. He made an area to lay down and looked over. He saw Hiccup and moved his tail fin in front of his face. Hiccup moved closer to touch the dragon. Sensing his action, Toothless lifted his tail fin to see Hiccup acting innocent and stalked awkwardly away. The dragon then moved to a tree and hung upside down to sleep.

Toothless opened his eyes, expecting to see the Viking trying to, once again, touch him. Instead, he found him sitting on a rock with a stick. He walked over and sat next to the human. He saw it was drawing a picture of him! 'I bet I could draw too!' Toothless thought and ripped off a giant branch. He started to draw random lines around Hiccup.

When Toothless felt done, he nodded at his ' masterpiece.' Hiccup looked around, started walking. He accidentally stepped on the dragon's artwork, which caused him to growl. Hiccup winced and immediately lifted his foot. The dragon went back to friendly. Hiccup placed his foot back down, and the dragon went into defense again. He lifted and placed his foot a few more times until the dragon looked as though he was going to pounce on him. Then he stepped over the line. Hiccup smiled at the satisfying grunt the dragon made and cautiously stepped until he made his way out of the dragon's work of art. Suddenly, he felt a hot breath ruffle his hair, which caused him to turn around and back a bit. He lifted his hand to touch the dragon a few times; each attempt was met with a warning growl from Toothless. Finally, giving up, Hiccup turned his head and opened his hand. What he didn't see was that the dragon's eyes widened a little at the trust the runty Viking displayed. Hesitantly, the dragon pushed his snout into Hiccup's hand. They had gained each other's trust.

Hiccup worked late at the forge, Gobber's words kept replaying in his mind, "its the wings and the tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead one", Hiccup couldn't let his new and only friend die, especially because of him. So, he realized he needed to make another tail fin for Toothless. When he was satisfied, he was going to bring it early that morning to Toothless.

"BACK!" Hiccup yelled confidently. The Zippleback cowered at the sight of him, well, in the eyes of the spectating Vikings at least. It was really the scent of the eal under his fur vest that made the dragon fear him. When he gave Toothless the basket of fish so he could put on his new fin, he freaked at the sight of the eal. "Don't make me tell you again! Yes, that's right! Back into your cage!" Secretly, Hiccup pulled out the eal from under his fur, "now think about what you have done', he whispered as he threw the eal into the cage, causing the dragon to cower. He wiped his hand to get the eal off it and turned around to see a very surprised Gobber, an envious Snotlout, a surprised Fishleggs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, and a livid Astrid.

When Hiccup finally finished making a pedal mechanism for the saddle he made, the cord attaching his harness to the saddle jammed. "Ah crap," he said to himself, 'great, I need to sneak Toothless into Gobber's smithing to unjam this...', he thought bitterly.

"Hiccup," a village watch acknowledged as he passed Hiccup. The small Viking gave an awkward wave as the man passed by. When the man vanished down the road, Hiccup then snuck Toothless into the smithy. The useless reptile shoved his head into a bucket and threw it, causing Hiccup to wince. 'Gods, I hope no one heard that,' he thought. He quickly grabbed a flat head tool and began prying the clamp. "Hiccup?" He heard a familiar voice call. 'Crap its Astrid!' He put his blacksmith's apron over his riding gear, jumped out, and greeted her 100% suspiciously. "Hi Astrid, hi Astrid, hi Astrid." She pointed out bluntly, "I don't know what's been going on, but you've been acting weird...", Toothless gave a tug, causing him to be pushed back, laughing. "Well, weirder," she finished. Toothless tugged him back into the smithy. When she flew open the doors, they were already out through the back and flew off into the night sky. 'Please let's not have a close call like that, ever again.

Hiccup was in the ring; he was behind one of the small fences Gobber had placed up. He couldn't believe that he was in the 'finals' of dragon training. Yah, he 'downed' all the dragons but had never hurt one before. 'Gods, I have to fail this one, so I don't have to kill the dragon. ..', he thought. Suddenly, Astrid rolled next to him, did a double-take, and pushed his shield down, "stay outa my way. I'm winning this."

"Sure, go ahead, by all means," Hiccup said as he stood up and looked up to see his father. He had a look Hiccup had never seen before, pride. He gave a sarcastic smile and turned back to the gronkle. It was slowly advancing towards him, and he saw Astrid getting ready for the kill. 'I can't let her kill this dragon,' he thought and scratched the gronkle under the chin. He fell sideways with a gleeful dazed look on his face. "NOOOOOO!" He heard and whipped around to see the furious Astrid swing her ax, cursing. 'And they call Toothless a fury,' he humored himself. Then he remembered Toothless, 'I need to check on him and see if he needs more food.' "Settle down, everyone...".

"Sooo... later", he said, trying to rush past Gobber.

"Whoa there, Hiccup...".

"I'm sorry I'm a little late for-."

"What?!" Astrid said, fuming and an ax to his throat, "late for what exactly?!"

"Quiet! The elder has chosen!" Stoick boomed once again. Gobber hovered his hook arm over Astrid. Gothi, the elder, shook her head. 'Oh no...", Hiccup thought as Gobber raised his good hand and pointed at Hiccup. Time seemed to slow. Hiccup closed his eyes, hoping that everything was just a huge nightmare, a wild dream. He was taken back to reality when he heard the crowd erupt. He opened his eyes to see a seething Astrid and an ecstatic Gobber screaming, "Oh! YOU'VE DONE IT!!! YOU GET TO KILL THE DRAGON!!!" Stoick stared down at his son with prideful tears spilling down his face. Fishleggs lifted hiccup while the other teens, besides Astrid, congratulated him. Sarcastically, Hiccup was saying, "Ah, yes... I can't wait, I am so..."

'Leaving.'
