chapter 9
Since the last chapter was an all Hicstrid chapter, I'm making this a primarily Toothcup brotherhood chapter.
Hiccup:
He has woken to find the injured scuttleclaw sleeping on top of him and Toothless to his side, wing covering him like a shelter. Hiccup tried getting the scuttleclaw off without waking it, but that didn't go the way he planned. It woke and stared at him, "Sorry, bud," he said, scratching the little dragon's neck. He closed his eyes and purred happily. Poor guy, Hiccup thought sadly, 'scuttleclaws are usually crazy and listen to no one. You are lucky to have been found by me...', Hiccup smiled, "Lucky. I like it". He pet Lucky the Scuttleclaw, who continued to purr happily.
He snuck out from under Toothless's wing with Lucky soon following. He looked back at the sleeping form of the night fury and smiled. Hiccup then grabbed his bow and quiver and eyed the lake. He nocked an arrow and aimed at a decent-sized carp. He loosed it and hit the fish square in the eye. He genitally grabbed the fish with his arrow and threw it to the scuttleclaw. Lucky ate it in one gulp. The scuttleclaw chirped happily and looked at Hiccup expectedly. With the same arrow knocked, he shot a larger fish and threw it to Lucky. The small dragon caught it and limped to Toothless. He set the fish down and nudged Toothless lightly with his snout. He growled, but not in a malicious way; it was playful. He acts tuff, yet, has gone soft for Lucky. It's been three days since he had rescued the dragon. Hiccup was surprised at how close the dragons had become. Toothless didn't want to leave the injured dragon for too long, which affects their search for dragons, much to Hiccup's annoyance. He was, however, glad that Toothless had bonded with the wounded scuttleclaw. Sometimes he'd act like a stern yet loving mother, while other times, he could act like a grumpy grandpa.
"You know Toothless?" Hiccup started to say after they'd eaten breakfast, "let's take a break from finding dragons... no, no need to worry about Lucky, yes, that's the scuttleclaw's name now. I'll leave a letter for Astrid. She is bound to visit. She has come every day. She likes him, remember? She called him adorable... Come on, bud". Toothless rolled his eyes and got up, giving Hiccup, you better be right, look, and ate the rest of his fish. 'That's the Toothless I know and love!' Hiccup thought as he donned his helmet and cloak.
Hiccup waved at the scuttleclaw while upon Toothless's back and took to the skies. They climbed high into the clouds as fast as they could. Hiccup hunched low, and Toothless darted like an arrow through the clouds. Then he dove towards the sea. Hiccup switched Toothless to auto and stood on his back. He balanced like a surfer, "ready?" He asked Toothless. The dragon nodded, and Hiccup jumped. They hurtled towards the sea at speeds unmatched by anything in their era. Then, just before hitting the seafloor, Toothless grabbed Hiccup, and they shot back into the sky, laughing and having the time of their lives.
Astrid:
Ugh, they go off to have fun and leave me with the injured dragon, Astrid thought broadly as she absently stroked Lucky's head. When she arrived at the cove, she saw the letter on the fallen log attached by an arrow reading...
Dear Astrid,
Do you mind watching Lucky for us while we "search for dragons?" Okay, Toothless and I are bored, and we haven't had free time to ourselves since returning to Berk. Thank you very much! It won't be long... okay, it might be the whole day but hey, gets you away from your Husband-to-be... too soon?
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the III
She sighed again as she continued to stroke the cute pink scuttleclaw. "Well, at least I have you," she said with a smile as the small dragon nuzzled her hand affectionately.
Hiccup:
They flew close to the ocean at high speed. Hiccup embraced the cool ocean mist spraying upon his face. Thunderdromes started breaching the surface like a pod of whales breaking for a breath. Hiccup touched a purple one who was smaller than the others. She glanced at him happily before disappearing under the waves once again. With the sound of a sonic boom, they darted into the clouds again. This time, they were surrounded by timberjacks and spotted some whispering deaths and deadly nanners within the flock. Hiccup placed Toothless on auto once again and started traveling from his wing to an orange timberjack. He rubbed the dragon's neck, causing him to hum happily. He then jumped to a turquoise nanner and then to a blue timberjack who flew over Toothless. Hiccup jumped back onto his dragon, and they dove off from the migrating dragons.
They flew and did some tricks until they spotted an all too familiar island. "Hey, bud, look! Our home before Sanctuary!" Hiccup cries happily. Toothless let out a plasma blast excitedly. "Oh, come on," Hiccup muttered as they flew through the blast. He covers his face with his dragon-scaled cape. Glad for the fireproof, dragon scaled cloak and the helmet', he thought as he let go of the cape and let it flap behind him once more. They circled to make sure nothing or no one was on before landing on the island.
'This was supposed to be our home forever until mother found us. Hiccup walked the island, remembering five years ago when he and Toothless called this place home. They haven't even lived there a week when they battled the Red Death, and Hiccup's mom found them at Hellhiem's Gate. He hasn't been back since he's been avoiding Berk and saving dragons with his mother. Needless to say, Hiccup left a lot behind.
He grabbed his priority items, his drawings, sentimental toolset, inventions, etc. He packed them on Toothless and gave one last look at the volcanic home. I'm glad mom found us. Though this place is awesome, I can see how it would get pretty lonely. He pats Toothless and mounted. "I'm hungry bud, how about some lunch," Toothless warbled gleefully and launched into the sky once more.
They were still on the island when Hiccup felt something amiss. "Look guys, night fury," Hiccup whipped around at the sound of the deep raspy voice that had spoken. He grabbed Inferno and activates it. He assesses the five ominous-looking Vikings in front of him. The one who spoke was a man as big as Stoick, but he was ugly. He had a black, shaggy beard and cruel black eyes. The others were wearing helmets so he couldn't see their faces, but they varied in size. "Oh? And is that the 'Dragon Tamer' I see? Drago Bludvist would be so happy when we mount your heads on a spike", he laughed cruelly, and his men soon joined nervously. They're scared. I can tell by how they are looking at each other and how they're laughing, Hiccup thought with a smile.
"We aren't backing down without a fight!" Hiccup yelled and sprung to the big man. His eyes grew wide as Inferno met his ax. Fast reflexes. Toothless roared, and plasma blasted a smaller trapper square in the chest and attacked the rest. Hiccup struck and parried the big ugly man's blows. "What's your name?" He asked as he effortlessly parried the man's ax.
"Why should I tell ya that?"
"So I don't have to call you Ugly."
He swiped angrily at Hiccup, who once again parried his blow. "Hey, you asked Ugly, maybe Troll would be better," he laughed as 'Troll' swung at him again. Hiccup ducked and slashed him in the shin with Inferno. Troll screamed and started swinging in a fit of fury. Hiccup bumped up against one of his men. He grabbed the man and threw him in front of Troll, who accidentally decapitated him. Hiccup turned away, 'not what I was suspecting to happen. Crap! That means this guy really wants me dead!' Hiccup felt he was going to throw up. Toothless hit another man with his tail and blasted the last. He then turned to Troll and blasted him in the neck.
Hiccup grabbed the man Toothless hit with his tail and brought his face close to his. He glared deeply into the brown eyes of the man he held. He felt the man squirm in his clutches and recoil himself as he gazed deeply into Hiccup's forest green eyes. "What are you men doing on my island?" He growled menacingly. "We-we're dragon trappers, sir," said the man quaking with fear. Hiccup's eyes narrowed, his rage rising with the words the man had uttered. The man seemed to shriek slightly at the sight of Hiccup's seething glare. "We had captured a gronkle! South of here! By the stream. Now... will... will you let me go?"
Pathetic, Hiccup thought as he released the trapper. "Tell Drago Bludvist that he needs to go through me first if he wants to kidnap dragons." He shoved the dragon trapper to the floor and mounted Toothless, who gave a mighty roar as they shot up into the air.
They landed precisely where the trapper had said the gronkle would be. Hiccup scanned the area until his eyes fell upon a cage too small for the gronkle within. He quickly ran to the cage and started picking the lock the way Valka had shown him. 'Place the pin in the middle, listen for the click... click... okay, now turn the flat-headed tool... snap! Creeeaaak'. The door had opened, and the gronkle barged out, causing Hiccup to be thrown backward into Toothless. The gronkle didn't even stop to thank Hiccup. He flew off into the sky without looking back. "Oh, your welcome. Not like I risked my life to save you or anything...", Hiccup muttered as he straightened his cloak. He glanced at Toothless, who stared back with a humorous glint in his eyes. "What? He just... oh all right". He hopped on his back and took to the skies.
Toothless:
He knew something was bothering his rider. However, Toothless knew that Hiccup would only speak when he wants to. As they flew further and further, he suddenly yanked Toothless sideways and landed on a small rocky spire jutting out of the water. It was only big enough for a dragon the size of Toothless and a human the size of Hiccup. When they landed, Hiccup started pacing. 'He will speak in three... two... one...',
"I pushed a man in front of Troll and... I caused him to die", Hiccup said, stopping and gazing off into the distance. 'Poor Hiccup, he had never killed someone before... despite how many raids we had quelled, how many dragons we saved, he'd never killed a soul except that Red Death...', when Hiccup dropped down to his knees, Toothless lay his head on them comfortingly. Hiccup glanced down and smiled sadly, "I'll be all right...", Hiccup said very unconvincingly as he stroked Toothless's head. The human continued to stare off into the distance. 'I have killed many of his kind and feel nothing. I've killed many of my own and still felt nothing. He killed an evil dragon queen and felt nothing, yet, killing evil humans greatly affects him. Why?' Toothless thought as he stared at Hiccup sadly. He glanced down at Toothless and looked him into the eye. "I don't understand either, bud. I know they were doing bad things, but...".
Like always, knows exactly what I'm thinking just by looking in my eyes. It's better than speaking.
"Come on, bud, it's getting late," Hiccup said a few hours later. Hiccup recovered from his shock slightly and even shot some fish for them to eat. Toothless opened his eyes and perked up. I wasn't sleeping! His eyes said. Hiccup smiled at him. "Oh, of course, you were sleepy, poo!" Hiccup said in his baby-talk voice. He usually changed to it when he wanted to play mock Toothless. Ugh! You know I hate it when you talk like that! Well... Hiccup was backing away when he saw the look in Toothless's eyes. He crouched down and pounced on Hiccup. He opened his mouth, letting his tongue hang right above Hiccup's face. three-second to apologize, Toothless's eyes read as Hiccup pleaded, "Toothless, please!"
One...
"Toothless no."
Two.
Come on, bud.. don't-".
THREE!
"Ugh! Toothless!" Hiccup cried as Toothless gave him a big, slobbery lick. "You know that doesn't wash out!" Hiccup whined, which caused Toothless to laugh. 'That's what you get when you speak to me like a baby.
"All right, all right! You win... now let's go so I can clean this off as soon as possible", Hiccup muttered as he jumped on Toothless. He glanced up at his friend, eyes asking, 'cruse or full speed?' Hiccup smiled, "full speed, bud!" Toothless darted into the dusking sky. He zoomed in the direction of Berk, wishing that the day would never end.
Thank you for reading. I try to update at least once every week, but I try to do more because, well, I personally hate waiting so gruelingly long for that next book in the series to finally come out. However, my schedule is pretty hectic, and so it might take a longer or shorter while for the next chapter to come out.
