Chapter 6
To save time, I'm going only to write the name. It will always be the third person unless I write (person's name) POV.
Hiccup:
They never learn, Hiccup thought with malice as he and Toothless flew off into the chilling night breeze. They think from their weapons and not their brain. Things didn't seem to change while I've been gone... "We are going to stay at the cove, bud, you remember, right?", Hiccup said asked. Toothless purred at the name of the place where he and his rider bonded. Though it had many painful reminders for both of them, its good greatly outweighed the bad.
When landing, they were thankful to have to unpack little. Hiccup only needed his blanket, tankard, and tools. They usually hunted, and Toothless provided shelter, so there was no need to take anything else. Since Hiccup had been living with Toothless, he had picked up on many habits. Being nocturnal is one of them. He smiled, remembering how irritated his mother gets when it's 2 in the afternoon, and they were still fast asleep. Mother would be glad that we will act "normal" for a change, Hiccup thought, humoring himself as he lay next to Toothless's belly. Hiccup scanned the cove as he fell asleep. This place hasn't changed a bit.
It was late afternoon when Hiccup and Toothless awoke from their sleep. They were exhausted from their flight yesterday. How many dragons are on Berk? He asked himself as he took off his helmet and splashed water on his face. He didn't want to stay on Berk any longer than he had to..., even if this place used to be my home, he thought to himself bitterly. He stared at himself in the reflection, wondering if the village would recognize him, especially his father, Gobber, and... and Astrid? "Oh, the Gods hate me," he mumbled. Why don't I give her up? Toothless perked up and gave him a questioning look, "it's alright bud, I'm just thinking of... 'you know who'". Toothless gave Hiccup a "your kidding, right?" Face. Hiccup smiled and splashed Toothless with the water.
They waited until night fell when they made their rounds. Hiccup strained his eyes and ears for the slightest signs of life in the dark forest below. Toothless also scanned the ground with much more ease than the human. There has got to be more than one monstrous nightmare on this island, Hiccup thought, thoroughly annoyed at their slow progress. "Why can't these dragons just show themselves so we can just help them and leave?" Toothless grunted in agreement. He didn't want to be here as much as Hiccup. They've been avoiding the village, fearing the chance that one will notice them and think that there is another raid. Perhaps the dragons are closer to the village. After all, that monstrous nightmare was pretty close. "All right, we are going to go closer to the village," Hiccup said to Toothless. He sighed but didn't protest. They flew closer to the treetops to avoid detection and get a better view of the forest floor.
Hiccup spotted something scuttle through the trees. "There!" He pointed excitedly, and Toothless dove towards the forest floor. Once they hit, Hiccup jumped off, crouched down, and listened closely. Since living with dragons, his sense got more acute, so it wasn't much straining to hear a dragon's breathing to his left. He slowly turned and held out his hand, "I'm not going to hurt you," he said sternly yet kindly. He saw and heard a rustle of the bushes as a hesitant grayish-blue colored dragon with a stinger, reddish eyes, and two flightless wings on its back coming towards him. Ah, a sharp classed dragon, speed stinger. Hiccup kept his hand extended and slowly lifted his other to show that he was unarmed. The dragon, once knowing Hiccup was not a threat, placed his head into his hand. He's more accepting than that monstrous nightmare, Hiccup thought. Once he removed his hand, Hiccup motioned for Toothless to do his part, explain where to go. Once the speed stinger knew what to do and where to go, he ran off as fast as a bolt of lightning. Two down, Thor knows how many left, Hiccup thought with a great sigh as he mounted Toothless. They shot up as quickly as the speed stinger ran.
Hiccup decided to do something stupid. When they arrived at the cove, Hiccup made some tea for himself for his sore bones. As he drank, he thought of Astrid Hofferson and her dislocated shoulder. It might help her... ugh! Fine! But I'm doing it to help her recover, not because I want to see her again! "Toothless?" The dragon perked his head up when hearing Hiccup calls his name. He created a new cup and made sure his helmet was tight and his hood low before mounting Toothless. "We are going to Gothi's... Oh, don't give me that look bud, I know that we vowed not to go into town, but I can't leave Astrid to- hey! Don't roll your eyes at- argh! Let's just go!" Toothless flew into the sky but kept smiling at Hiccup while he gave Toothless a mocking death glare. I wonder if this is how it will be like to have a sibling. If I ever can, I should ask Ruffnut. She is at least slightly smarter than Tuffnut. He humored while they flew over the village.
Gothi's house was pretty high up and overlooking the village. When they landed, Hiccup switched Toothless's tail to auto. He snuck in as silently as his metal leg would allow. Her home was surprisingly drafty for an elder's house. He expected there to be absolutely no draft and being as hot as Hellhiem. I guess even the elder's house has that traditionally "glorious" Viking architecture. He thought sarcastically as he saw all the holes in the walls. He peeked into a room in the back and saw Gothi fast asleep, so he entered a much smaller room that overlooked Berk. Hiccup genitally set the cup of tea next to Astrid's bedstand. He cautiously peeked at her face, asleep, just as I expected. I'll just make another tankard, he thought. He was about to sneak out when he made the mistake of peaking outside the window. Berk looked beautiful, with the skylights called auroras flashing green and blue, the moon was full, and the stars twinkled. Crickets sang their nighttime symphony, and the village peacefully slept through the beauty of the night. Crap! I lost track of time! I should just climb out this window-
"Gasp!" Came a noise behind him. He stiffened and slowly turned to see Astrid staring at him, hand over her mouth and wide-eyed. Well, isn't this my lucky night?
Astrid:
The pain was unbearable! Astrid wasn't able to keep a night's sleep and would usually wake up in serious pain. This was the fifth time she woke this night, but it had nothing to do with pain. Her eyes flung open when she felt another's presence in the room. She suspected it was Gothi checking on her, but she still wanted to make sure there was no intruder. She scanned the room when a figure staring out the window caught her eye. It was too buff and tall to be Gothi. When she squinted, she was able to see a black dragon scaled cape! She thought with a gasp. She placed her hand over her mouth to stifle the sound, but it had already escaped. She saw the figure stiffen and slowly turn in her direction. Why is the Dragon Tamer here? She thought.
"Oh good, you're awake," he said in a semi-sarcastic tone. He walked over and motioned to the edge of the bed, "may I sit?" He asked with a more polite tone. She nodded, and he sat. "I was wondering how your feeling. You're lucky that the impact only dislocated your arm from your shoulder. Your abdomen was bleeding internally, but I bet it's heald by now, or else we wouldn't be having this conversation", he said all this with a note of concern. Does he care about me? She thought to herself with a slight flutter in her heart. Then scolded herself for being excited about his concern. He pointed at a tankard that wasn't there when she fell asleep. "That would help with the... hold on a second", he reached over her and took the tankard. He touched the sides and signed, "cold," he mumbled. He pulled out what looked like a hilt of a sword. He flipped something, and suddenly, a blade lit aflame shot out, and he held the tankard over the flame. I knew I saw a flaming blade! She thought happily. A few minutes later, he handed her the tankard. His sword emitted enough light for her to see those beautiful green eyes behind that terrifying helmet before the blade shrunk back, extinguishing the flame.
"Drink, drink, it'll help ease the pain," he said impatiently when he saw her stalling. She took a sip, and it immediately relaxed her. He was right; the pain did subside in her shoulder. She sighed in relief and continued to gulp the wonder drink until she emptied it whole. She handed back his tankard to him, asking, "what was in that?" He shrugged. "Some herbs and a slight bit of aloe vera juice, it thrives in tropical regions, but I found many in the Arabian Peninsula." She was surprised. He has been places, hasn't he? She was about to ask him about his adventures in Arabia when he suddenly got up and said, "I better get going," he walked to the window and stopped. "Can you do me a favor and not tell anyone I'm here?" Astrid was taken aback, "why?" She asked and winced when she heard how whiny her voice sounded. "Because," he started, "first, I don't think the people would appreciate a trespasser like me on your lands. Secondly, I just rather not have the attention. And thirdly, I don't want the people thinking your crazy because I'm not planning on showing myself any time soon". With that said, he jumped out the window.
Astrid continued to stare out the window the Dragon Tamer jumped out of. She was wondering if she'd ever see him again when she felt her eyelids grow heavy, and she fell into a deep sleep. Dreaming about the mysterious man.
Hiccup:
His heart was beating 500 miles per second. Gods, she is more beautiful than I remembered. Red really suits her! Hiccup thought as they darted back to the cove. He was replaying the night in his head. She wasn't too surprised to see him in the room, which was a shock, well, after her initial shock of someone being in the room. He remembered that he had to think quickly, said something sarcastic, and quickly fixed it with politeness followed by his concern. Speaking to humans is a complicated affair.
The sky started to lighten, indicating the approach of dawn. Hiccup and Toothless were exhausted after their long night and flew to the cove for some well-needed rest. Tomorrow night, we'll find more.
The next week, Hiccup's frustration grew. He knew there were more than two dragons on Berk. He sensed them and sometimes heard them. However, he couldn't find them. Every time they'd see something, it just vanishes. Could it be a changewing? Scuttle claw? Another speed stinger? Hiccup was dying to know why they seemingly disappear. Then his mind wandered back to Berk's arena. Some of these dragons are probably trying to free those in the arena... but don't know-how. Hiccup understood this when he was rescuing dragons on Outcast Island when trying to rescue a whispering death. It wouldn't leave to the sanctuary without its captured brethren. This would explain why these dragons are avoiding my every attempt to save them. Plus, I'd need to save those dragons anyway. How should I, though? Then he thought of Astrid. Every night since the first he visited her, he continued to check on her. She'd awaken as if she wasn't asleep at all, and they'd hold a whispered conversation while she drank the tea he made her. She spoke of her life at Berk while Hiccup would speak of some of his less painful adventures with Toothless. He hoped that he could convince her that dragons aren't bad. If that didn't work, maybe he could also befriend the Vikings, get close, and free them while everyone slept. Hiccup hated deception, but he saw that it was his only choice here. When he decided, he made Toothless hover in midair right above the forest. "All right," Hiccup said in his normal voice, "I'm going to save the dragons in the arena first, then you all better go to the sanctuary." He then flew to Berk to speak with Astrid.
Astrid:
She was always excited to see Rider every night. He told her to call him that so she doesn't have to call him 'Dragon Tamer' or 'Night Rider.' She would pretend to sleep when Gothi checked on her and would lay awake until he came. Not only did his tea do wonders, but he was also fascinating to converse with. He had many adventures with his friend Toothless. She was surprised to hear that he traveled with his friend. She never believed the rumors that he rode a night fury. He never said that he flew a dragon. All he talked about were his friend and his adventures. He kept being very open each time I'd ask about dragons. He'd tell me things that made dragons seem less threatening. I started to wonder if dragons really were the threat after our conversations.
She was pondering the dragons when she heard the sound indicating Rider's approach. It was a slight click-space-click-space... she closed her eyes like she always does, so he didn't think she was expecting him. She heard as the steps came closer to her and the light thud of his tankard being placed onto her nightstand. She then heard the steps receding to the window and stop. She opened her eyes to see him staring out the window. He was obviously pondering something by how he was rubbing his head. She got up and started drinking her tea. Her injury was now a slight throb, and Gothi had estimated that she could go home after tonight but not lift anything heavy. She knew that Rider would find it difficult to see here. After all, she lives with her parents and in the middle of town. "So, I'm presuming you'll be better soon and return home?" Asked Rider. He turned around to face her, smiling. She had never seen his face, but she knew his emotions when reading his eyes. She nodded and returned his smile. He sat down at the edge of her bed like he always did and took out a piece of paper. "I have a feeling it would be harder for me to come see you, but perhaps you could come to see me," he said and handed her the folded paper. Astrid unfolded it to see a very well-detailed map of Berk. There was an X in the forest west of the village. "That's where we are staying its a small yet beautiful cove." He said with a smile. Oh! So I'm also going to meet his best friend! she thought happily. "It's getting late, I should get going, and you need your rest," he said while getting up. He took the empty tankard from her stand and jumped out the window. She fell asleep, excited about the fact that she would finally see where Rider was camping and his best friend.
