chapter 3

Third-person Hiccup:

As Hiccup and Toothless followed the dragons from Berk. The more nervous he became. Those who did have food didn't even eat any of it yet, while the others would scoop up anything big that would breach the water's surface. They seemed scared. He could tell by how they flew with a jerking twitch in their wings and how their eyes were slitted, and not because they were feeling threatened.

After a few more hours of flying, they encountered a huge wall of mist. As they came closer to it, Toothless started acting strange. "Hey, bud, what's wrong?" Hiccup whispered, concerned for his friend. Then Hiccup realized that the other dragons were also acting strangely. More and more dragons started coming. They eventually lost track of Berk's dragons from Berk, but he felt that he didn't need to keep his mind on them anymore. They were all heading in the same direction anyway. They followed the stream of dragons as they flew to what he believed was the Island's center.

The mist abruptly ended at the base of a volcanic island. Their stream of dragons was one of many all entering the volcano through cracks. It was a wonderful yet terrifying sight to see. They squeezed into a small hole, then opened up into a humongous volcanic cavern. Thousands upon thousands of dragons started flooding in. Hiccup wasn't able to take insight for Toothless shot up onto a small ledge above the pit. They hid behind a natural pillar and peered down at the dragons discarding the stollen or hunted goods into the pit. "Well, it's satisfying to know that all our food is being dumped down a hole," Hiccup mumbled.

They watched as the dragons came in from pooling to a trickle. The last dragon to come in was an empty-handed gronkle. He regurgitated a fish and began scratching with glee. Then, almost too quick to register, a giant dragon head snatched the gronkle out of the air. "What the..." words could not express Hiccup's fear of the giant dragon he'd never seen before. "This all makes perfect sense!" Hiccup said, putting the pieces together. "You guys are the workers, and that is your queen. Your getting food for her so you won't become the food...", suddenly the dragon's head popped up again and started sniffing the air. It could smell me, and Hiccup thought as the dragon's eyes looked in their direction. "Let's do this," Hiccup said, hunching lower to Toothless. He responded with a roar and a plasma blast to the dragon queen's face.

They shot out with the other dragons and flew around as the dragon queen broke out of the volcano. When she was fully out, Hiccup and Toothless started pelting her with plasmablasts. Shot after shot of plasma shot into her thick scales. How in Helhime do we kill this thing? He thought. They got her flying when Toothless shot a powerful blast at her side. He looked into the black clouds above. Then suddenly, a memory appeared in his mind.

A month in half ago...

Hiccup had finally mastered Toothless's tail fin after a near-death experience, plummeting to the rocky shore below. They were celebrating with a fish dinner on a giant, rocky area. Hiccup was cooking his small fish by the fire while Toothless ate his pile. Toothless started to gag, which caused Hiccup to turn with concern. The head of one of his fish came out of his mouth as he looked questioningly at Hiccup. "No thanks, I'm good," Hiccup said, showing Toothless his fish as proof. Satisfied, Toothless continued his meal. Seconds later, three terrible terrors came flying at them. Hiccup thought nothing of it. However, Toothless growled and put a protective claw over his pile. A light yellow terror ran boldly to Toothless, who growled and made the terror jump back. A blue-colored one grabbed the fish head Toothless regurgitated and started to eat. The yellow one came over only to be blasted by the blue. As Toothless was distracted by the terrible terrors fighting, he didn't notice a green one had snuck into his pile until he felt the pile shift. Toothless quickly grabbed the fish and yanked it from the terror laughing. The terror, however, couldn't find the humor in this and spit out the fishtail fin. His mouth filled with gas as he was about to let loose a 'mighty' flame when Toothless shot a small blast into the dragon's mouth, causing the pathetic creature to collapse on itself. "Huh, not so fireproof on the inside," Hiccup joked.

Present-day...

Still looking at the clouds and the memory now sharp in his head, Hiccup thought up a plan. "Okay Toothless, time to disappear," he yelled over the roaring wind. Toothless looked up and immediately understood what Hiccup meant. They shot up into the clouds closely followed by the queen, or Red Death, as Hiccup decided to call it. She was just about to snap at them when they made a sharp turn, and she lost sight of them. A few seconds of pause when suddenly, she was hit in the back by a plasma blast. Then she was hit by a volley of them. One after another, until she got fed up. The Red Death shot fire in all directions in a desperate attempt to hit them.

It succeeded. It didn't harm Toothless nor Hiccup; however, it caught the tail fin on fire. "Okay, times up," Hiccup said, "let's see if this works." They dove backward, and Hiccup yelled, "COME  ON IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!" Toothless roared in challenge as well. The Red Death zeroed in on them and snapped, only to get the air and dove after them. They set a straight dive so the Red Death would have a clear shot of them. He heard her inhale, and Toothless started to get nervous, "it's okay, bud, it's okay," Hiccup said, coaxing his friend. Then he heard the sound of gas forming in her mouth, "hold Toothless... NOW!" They whipped around, and just as she was about to incinerate them, Toothless blasted into her mouth. The Red Death screamed in pain as she was being burned from the inside. Hiccup and Toothless had to dodge between her spikes and, when she hit the ground and exploded, had to race the fire before it could reach them. Then, her mace of a tail started to fall towards them, "no, no, NO!" Hiccup yelled as he couldn't control Toothless. The tail hit them and jerked Hiccup out of his saddle, breaking his lower leg in half. He passed out by the pain and didn't notice when Toothless wrapped his wings around his rider and best friend to protect him from the fire.

Third-person Toothless:

They hit the floor with an intense impact. The fire from the Queen's explosion was so intense; he had to close his eyes in fear that they'll be burnt out. My priority is saving Hiccup; he thought as he opened his eyes. He glimpsed under his wing; I can feel and hear his heartbeat, good, Toothless thought. He then heard the sound of wingbeats and looked up. An armada of dragons were following a stormcutter and... and his rider! There are others besides Hiccup! Toothless thought happily. The dragon landed, and his rider jumped off. The rider then ran to the Queen's corpse. "She was an evil ruler; she would not be missed," Toothless said to the stormcutter. He turned his owl-like head to Toothless and responded, "I know, we are just confirming her death."

"Can you help us?" Asked Toothless, in a pleading voice. The stormcutter asked curiously, "who's us?" Toothless unfolded his wings to show Hiccup in his arms. The stormcutter's eyes widened, and he jumped to get his rider's attention. It turned to Toothless and looked at Hiccup in his arms. It walked cautiously over to them and peered at Hiccup. The rider first covered the area where its mouth should've been when it saw his leg, then let out a feminine gasp of shock when she saw his face. "Hiccup?" She said with surprise. She reached for his face, which caused Toothless to growl instinctively. She looked calmly at Toothless and said, "it's alright, he was just a baby..." she took off her helmet and met Toothless with a familiar set of forest green eyes, "...but a mother never forgets". Toothless's eyes widened, Hiccup's mother!?

Third-person Hiccup:
Some days later...

Hiccup awoke in intense pain. He screamed, which caused Toothless to rush in in panic mode. As he sobbed in pure agony, he looked down at his leg to only see a stub below his knee. "I'm sorry, it was beyond repair," said a female voice from somewhere in the room. "It had to be severed; it would have hurt a lot more if I didn't." The voice was getting closer. When Hiccup regulated his breathing and calmed down, he was able to gasp out, "who... are... you...?" The woman who spoke came out from behind an icy wall. Hiccup's eyes widened at the sight of her; she looks almost like.... She was holding a cup of tea in her hand as she smiled painfully and laid it on a wooden table next to his makeshift bed. Her forest green eyes looked so familiar to him... "who are you?" He asked again as she raised him to a sitting position and fed him the tea. A warmth spread throughout his body and almost made him forget his pain. As he drank, she said, "I should have taken you with me...". Hiccup lifted his eyebrow at her. She stared him into his eyes again. The hair, the eyes, even her face, is she... no, it can't be... wait! Can she be...

"I'm your mother."

Hiccup gasped, choking on the rest of the tea. He started coughing, and she lightly patted his back to help him get the liquid out of his lungs. When he was done choking, he yelled, "YOUR ALIVE!!!" he didn't mean to be so loud, but he thought she was dead this whole time. She smiled at his reaction and chuckled. Not knowing what else to do and not caring about the pain in his leg, he jumped up and hugged her tightly. He started sobbing again, but this time it had nothing to do with the pain in his leg. His mother also started to sob; she was glad to finally see her son after 14 years. "I'm so sorry, Hiccup; I should have come back for you. Oh, how much you look like me!" She said as she grabbed his face. He laughed, "are you kidding? There is no need to be sorry! I'm just glad to see you. My mother, she's alive...", Hiccup was stunned. His mother was alive! Or was she? "Am I in Valhalla?" Hiccup asked semi sarcastically. She laughed, and she says, "no, better, you'll need to recover before I show you. But your not dead I can guarantee that, now, I'm going to make you more tea". As she was walking out, she turned to Hiccup and pointed at the night fury sitting near him, "what's his name?"

"Toothless."

"Mmmm, I like it," she says as she walks out of the room, leaving Toothless and Hiccup alone. Hiccup turned to his friend and said excitedly, "my mother is alive!" Toothless gave Hiccup his famous smile and listen to Hiccup blabber on about how happy he is to know his mother is alive and healthy.
