chapter 12
Omniscient narrator:
After the shock wears off, Snotlout screams, "your not supposed to be here!!! You can't... but your supposed... Your dead!!!"
Hiccup's eyes widened sarcastically, "am I?" He checked his hands and made a show of patting himself down, he side glanced at Astrid who was covering her mouth to sheild her laughter. Her smile gave him more confidence which caused him to laugh carelessly.
Astrid had been through exactly what all the people from Berk are currently going through. She was laughing because of Hiccup's humor, thats true, but she also laughed in delight because Hiccup, not only decided to show Berk that dragons aren't a threat; but he also revealed himself to the village. Something he was reluctant to do. She prayed that it'll be enough to accept him back so they can call off this ridiculous wedding.
Gobber watched the scene unfold below with a mix of shock and relief. He knew that Hiccup was alive, no matter what everyone else said. He kept his beliefs to himself because there was no evidence to support his beliefs. Eventually, he even started to think that Hiccup was perhaps truly dead! But here he stands, disproving everything everyone ever thought impossible by the 'village nuisance'. Everyone except Gobber to be exact. I knew you were smarter than we give ya credit for, he thought happily. He gazed over to where Stoick was sitting to find his throne vacant. Now were in Odin's beard is that man?
Why is he here! Snotlout thought as fear and... possibly relief? Flowed through him. Seeing his little cousin again was like seeing a ghost of a long forgotten enemy. He was relieved to see Hiccup alive, no matter how much he disapproved of him, he didn't want to see him dead. But he didn't expect him to come back, let a lone be, not only buffer than himself, but also better looking. He now felt threatened by his very appearance, something he never felt before when looking at Hiccup. All the mean things he's ever said, all the things he did, all the careless, ignorant, and selfish things he's ever thought hit him at the moment his eyes met those forest green eyes came flooding back to him. Like a tsunami in a horrible hurricane, he now feard Hiccup. With all the dragons here he could reak havoc on Berk, have his revenge on everyone who had wronged him. And he knew that he'd be first on that list.
Ruffnut didn't know what to think, only that Hiccup looked hot! Tuffnut saw his sister staring at the old nuisance and growled like a dragon. She glared at her brother and said, "can you not mimick a dragon while I am watching the drama?" Tuffnut mumbled, "more like watching Hiccup, what is even the big deal anyways? Wasn't he like, kicked out of Berk or something?"
"No idiot, he left!"
"I think he left because he would have been banished anyways!"
"No, its because no one would listen to him!"
"No, its because he was a heretic!... what's a heretic again?"
They continued to argue as Fishleggs started at Hiccup with a look of awe. He's alive! Really alive! He thought as he bounced excitedly. He couldn't hide the wide smile playing across his face as he looked down at the missing heir.
"Leave Rogue!" Yelled Spitlout as he jumped into the arena. Hiccup turned his attention away from the son and onto the father as he marched over to him with hatred in his eyes. Spitlout was so close to his dream, his dream that his own flesh and blood would rule Berk. That Snotlout, not Hiccup, would become cheif of the Hooligan Tribe. Now, with Hiccup here, his dream began to fall apart. His last hope, was to make sure he leaves, and fast. He walked right up to Hiccup and tried to intimidate him, which obviously didn't work because he was slightly taller than Snotlout which means he dwarfed in comparison. "You don't belong here, your not supposed to be here, we don't want you here! You need to leave now or el-."
"Or else what?" Hiccup said in a low voice that dripped of venom. Snotlout and his father jumped hearing the tone he used. A tone of voice no one would expect from the old, awkward, pathetic Hiccup who left Berk five years ago. Hiccup growled like an angry dragon and stared in fury at Spitlout. "You don't decide who can or can't be here, who does or doesn't want me here, or what happens to me if I don't leave. That falls to-".
"Me".
All eyes turn to the entrance of the arena as a big, bulky viking with red hair and beard came walking towards Hiccup with grace befitting a grand chief like himself. The crowd of spectators went silent once more as Stoick stopped and stared at his long lost son.
Stoick's POV:
When I witnessed the Night Rider taking off his helmet, I was amazed. Amazed that a man who prefers his identity a secret would reveal himself to total strangers like us, especially since he'd never done it to any other tribe. Then, I saw his face, and I knew, before he spoke, that it was my son. I stared wide eyed at how much he had changed. He had muscle, he had confidence, and a prosthetic leg. I... I looked with pride and guilt, at the son I had disowned, and he knew I did. He mentioned it as he introduced himself as Hiccup Horrendous Rider the first. Saying that he cannot call himself Haddock anymore. I was saddened, but I knew that it was wrong of me, I had to apologize. I left my throne and pushed my way through the crowd. I opened the gate and stopped dead. Rage boiled my inside as I heard Spitlout playing chief. Then, Hiccup cut him off. Something that surprised even me. "You don't decide who can or can't be here, who does or doesn't want me here, or what happens to me if I don't leave", Stoick heard his son say. He gathered himself as he walked into the arena. "That falls to-".
"Me", I said, glaring at Spitlout as all eyes turned towards me.
Omniscient narrator:
Spitlout lowered his eyes from the chief's piercing glare. Hiccup on the other hand, returned the chief's look with matching intensity.
Toothless advanved towards the chief, eyes slitted and a deep, guttural growl emitted from deep within his throat. He moved with silent grace, and whipped his tail back and forth like an agitated cat. When he was right behind Hiccup, he stuck his arm out to prevent Toothless from advancing any further. His growling ceased imediatly. His eyes went round and he gazed up at Hiccup questioningly. When he saw the look of determination on his face. Toothless realized that this was his fight, and his alone. He sat down and bumped Hiccup's hand with his head, showing that he has his full support.
Stoick cautiously walked towards his son. He was afraid that this was all just an illusion or a dream. A dream that he had had many times. A dream that would usually end with him waking before he could touch his son, or where he would run with happiness to hug Hiccup, who would turn to dust in his clutches as if he didn't exist at all. The people would then start screaming those awful words, spewed at him that last day he had ever seen his son. When Stoick was inches from Hiccup, his right hand wen't shakingly towards his shoulder. He placed his hand upon his son, he felt Hiccup's shoulder tense, then relax under his grip. Hiccup stared at his father with a mix of anger and confusion upon his face. Stoick's other hand touched the side of his face. Tears filled his eyes as he began to realize that this wasn't a dream. My son, my beautiful, wonderful son... is- is alive!
Stoick grabbed Hiccup in a massive bear hug, causing him to yelp in surprise and pain. "Dad... can't... breath... going to... die. From. Suffocation!" Stoick let go of Hiccup who gulped down the fresh air, only to be crushed again. By Gobber this time, who snuck into the arena as Stoick and Hiccup were having their strange showdown. "Gobber!" Hiccup whispered in excitement and pain. "I'm going to die if this keeps up!" Hiccup joked when Gobber let go of him. Stoick, still watery eyed wen't down to his knees and thanked the Gods for Hiccup's return. "I didn't die and come back to life", Hiccup murmured to Toothless who scoffed and snorted as if to say, "to them... you did".
"I'm so sorry my son", Stoick said after he finished praying. When Hiccup looked at his father's sad, glad, and hopeful face, all his anger washed away like a flooded dam breaking. Hiccup smiled and hugged Stoick, "Its okay, I forgive you". He soon regretted those words because Stoick then, once again, gave him a crushing hug. Luckily however, this one lasted a shorter time, and Stoick let go before any serious damage could be caused. Toothless purred in satisfaction when hearing his father apologise, he lifted his claw and glanced from Hiccup to Stoick. Hiccup laughed and looked from Toothless to his father, who looked at his son with a questioning look himself. "Toothless wants to say hi", before Stoick could protest, Hiccup knelt next to Toothless and stroked his head. "Besides... he did take care of me out there...". Stoick sighed, he hesitantly shuffled closer to the night fury and reluctantly pat his head. Toothless started to figit and looked at Hiccup, silently asking if he could say hi. Hiccup nodded, the second thing he would regret. Toothless jumped on Stoick and licked him. "GET THIS BEAST OFF ME!" Stoick yelled. Hiccup got Toothless off his father, laughing so hard that he fell over the moment he got his dragon off him.
"It must be because your my dad, he got a little... over excited", Hiccup explained when he could finally breath properly. Stoick glared at the dragon, then sighed and he started to chuckle, which surprised Hiccup. "Dragons are truly... not what we thought they were". He then looked Hiccup in the eye. He grasped his son's shoulders, "and that...", he started to say. He stared off into the distance when he continued with a quivering voice, "and that is what you were trying... trying to say... To tell us five years ago. And we just-".
"Didn't listen", Hiccup finished. He shrugged under his father's grasp and gave him a sideways smile, "and I'm used to it". Stoick brought his eyes back on his son. He looked Hiccup in the eye and said, "well... get un-used to it. Because from now on... we, all of us from Berk. Are going to listen". He looked over at the dragons in the arena, the scuttleclaws who were happily playing with eachother the whole time; oblivious to what was going on around them. He looked at Toothless, who's eyes did somewhat mirror Hiccup's; the intelligence, the attention to details, even the eye's color. And then to Astrid and Stormfly, for the first time in five years; she smiled so widely, that one would have thought that she had placed first in dragon training. "We, are going to first start by learning more about dragons... your way". Hiccup smiled, "when do we start?"
"Tomorrow".
Astrid POV:
We all went our seperate ways. Hiccup left with Stoick and Gobber back to their old house, the gang went to the mead Hall, and the villagers either went home or to the mead hall as well. Me? I stayed with Stormfly. My deadly nader, my dragon. I stroked her like she was the most precious thing in the world, which she was. And if it wasn't for Hiccup, I would have never known that she, a dragon, would make me so happy. I almost forgot that they were the reason my mother and father died. No, it actually wasn't their fault. The dragons were possibly trying to protect themselves, which caused my family to die in the process. It wasn't my family's nor the dragon's conscious fault, it was anger's fault. Belief's fault. The faults of our own minds and the minds of our forefathers. We all shared the same mind... except Hiccup. Hiccup had his own mind. His own way of thinking. His brilliance is... exquisite. He was able to think outside the box. All this time we thought that there was something wrong with him... but truth be told, it was us. Not him. We were ruled by ignorance and we were single minded. He is the only one amongst us who can see clearly. And I, will be glad to follow someone like him.
I continued to bond with Stormfly, losing track of time. What brought me to was the sound of voices. I turned to see Snotlout and... Hiccup! (oh my heart leaped when I saw him!). They were standing at the entrance of the arena. Snotlout... looking like he always does. And Hiccup looked amazing, he still wore his armor and that dragon scaled cape. It flew slightly as the wind blew. He and Snotlout talked until Hiccup looked over and saw me staring. He made a loud throat clearing sound which caused Snotlout to turn. They walked up to me which confused me greatly. Hiccup stoped a few paces behind and Snotlout came a few paces closer to me. "Do you love Hiccup?" He asked hesitantly, as if he knew the answer and didn't like it. I didn't hesitate, "yes".
"Then he should have you", Snotlout said, disappointed yet... content. He smiled sadly and said, "I'll make it known that our wedding is cancelled". Snotlout made to leave. "Hold it", Hiccup said as he grabbed Snotlout without even looking at him. He stared at Hiccup with a look of pure confusion. He let go of Snotlout and walked over to one of the gates. I recognized it as the one that held the monstrous nightmare. He opened it, the dragon came out covered in fire. Hiccup whistled and held out his hand. The nightmare stopped freaking out and looked at him curiously. Snotlout looked anxious but I wasn't nervous. I knew that he knew what he was doing. The fire died down on the dragon and so did his temper. The monstrous nightmare sniffed Hiccup's hand before rubbing his nose against it. Hiccup stared to slowly walk backwards towards us. Snotlout nervously looked around and found a broken spear head on the gloor. He picked it up. Before he rose, I slapped him on the shoulder and said, "na ah". He dropped it. When I looked back up, Hiccup and the monstrous nightmare were touching distance from us. He grabbed Snotlout by the wrist and brought his hand closer to the dragon's snout. Snotlout balled his fist and mumbled in fear, "What are you-".
"It's okay, it's okay", Hiccup coaxed. Trying to reassure his cousin. Snotlout opened his hand and Hiccup removed his. He quickly replaced his own with Snotlout's. The dragon started to pur happily and gave him a loving look. Snotlout's face broke out into a magnificent smile and he started to laugh happily. He removed his hand and looked at Hiccup. "Why?"
"Because of the sacrifice you made today", he said smiling. He wrapped his arm around my waist and held me close, "for calling off the wedding to the woman you love for a mere... renegade like myself". Snotlout laughed. "If it wasn't going to be a happy one... I don't see the point of keeping it". My heart was elated. It felt so surreal. I was afraid that this was all just a wild dream. But then I felt Hiccup's arm around me and thats when I knew it wasn't.
Snotlout left us alone in the arena, with his new dragon following right behind him. Hiccup smiled down at me and I at him. "Anything else you want from me? Whiny?"
"Nothing you Rogue..., well maybe this", I pulled him in for a long kiss. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I wrapped mine around his neck. When we parted he laughed, "are you going to punch me now for no reason? OUCH! I was kidding!"
I laughed and said, "thats for mocking my ways". He laughed. He pulled me in for another kiss. When we parted he murmured, "and thats for everything else?" I laughed and nodded.
When I left the arena with Stormfly at my heals, Hiccup started opening the other gates. He wanted to train the dragons before giving them to the others the next day. He promised to teach me to fly tomorrow, even if the others aren't ready to learn yet. Today was the best day of my whole life. And I had a feeling that from now on, they were going to be getting better and batter fron here on out.
