What you're looking at is basically a Rose gijinka. I have this great little headcanon (that is canon) that Rose has daydreams/actual dreams where she's the trainer instead of Ashley and the run following it- she doesn't leave out the gory details, either. Rose goes deaths and all, but she still does have a pretty established team...

-Grovyle (what she thinks of Ashley)

-Azurill (what she thinks of Reginae) (Ouch) 

-Espeon

-Yamask 

-Cubone 

-Zorua

The other four are to some extent also symbolic but that's a little more abstract. She'll move things around as she sees fit but she never takes the top two off her team. Is that because she cares about them or because she likes messing with them? Who knows.
