Remilda quickly finished scribbling on the piece of paper, finishing up writing down the assignment for Defense Against the Dark Arts. It wasn't much of an assignment, but for the past two days of classes Remilda found herself forgetting to do things. So she decided not to risk it, she had forgotten to do her assignment for Monday, and today's. So she wasn't really going to go for a third day in a row.
"Miss Potter, I expect the missing assignments by the end of today," Professor Umbridge said as she paused in front of the desk that Remilda and Lucy had claimed as their seats.
"But the policy is by the end of the month." Lucy pointed out, "We have work from Charms and we have to study for a quiz in Potions."
"Miss Diggory, if Miss Potter would like to pass this class as well she will have those assignments in by the end of the day-"
"But that's not fair." Lucy retorted back sharply.
Remilda wanted to sink down into her seat, the tension between Lucy and Umbridge was tangible. And Remilda was right in the middle of it.
"Lucy, it's fine." she said giving Lucy a look as if to tell her to drop it and then looked up at Umbridge, "I'll have the assignments in. Can I just bring them to your office or where would you like me to bring-"
"But it's not policy," Lucy cut in, "Remilda, you're supposed to have until the end of the month."
"Lucy, it's just a few assignments-"
"Yeah it is, so this toad shouldn't be making such a big deal about waiting a few weeks-"
The entire classroom fell completely silent. Everyone's eyes were at the from of the room at the desk that Lucy and Remilda had claimed. Remilda stared at Lucy, her eyes wide. Her throat was going dry, she was so shocked that she felt paralyzed. Nobody moved, but a few people began to quietly continue packing their things to go move on with their day. Ron, Harry, Hermione, and Raelyn however all had their eyes glued on the situation.
"Detention, Miss Diggory!" Umbridge exclaimed, and then looked down at Remilda. "Miss Potter you can join her." she added in, "Fifty points from Gryffindor."
Remilda and Lucy both walked out of the room, silently. But Lucy was still fuming.
"I can't believe Dumbledore is letting her teach like this," Lucy stated coldly. "First she insults Cedric, and is practically torturing everyone, now this?"
Remilda didn't say anything at first, "That didn't need to happen, Lucy..."
Lucy sighed heavily, "Yeah, yeah I know. I just couldn't help myself. When she said Ceds death was an accident, I wanted to be sick!" she was fuming angry, "And she had no reason to be so unfair to you! Honestly, Remilda, you don't need to take that! You know she's only doing this sort of thing to you because of Harry."
"I'm not going to intentionally cause problems." she replied. And she meant that, unlike Raelyn and even Lucy, she wasn't going to go out of her way to cause anything with Umbridge.
That evening, after Herbology Remilda made her way to the Great Hall with a list of homework to do. However, her first priority was Defense Against the Dark Arts. After dinner, she'd be going to the detention that she didn't even deserve with Lucy. She wanted to be able to show up with something done, hopefully to earn some good points with Umbridge and maybe get be with a short sentence for her lines that Umbridge made everyone do.
The Great Hall was already crowded, and Remilda ended up claiming a seat next to Hermione as usual. Raelyn was seated across from her, and watched her closely as Remilda pushed away her dishes and began to pull out homework.
"You're doing that now?" Raelyn asked.
"I don't want to show up to detention empty handed," Remilda replied.
Hermione scoffed, "I can't believe she's making you go to detention. You didn't do anything." she said as she took a bite of food.
Remilda pressed her lips into a thin line, "Mhm," she began, "I know."
"But I'm glad Lucy said all that." Hermione scoffed.
Raelyn laughed a bit.
"I'm serious!" Hermione said sharply, "Umbridge is absolutely horrendous. And completely unfair." she stated, looking between Raelyn and Remilda. "Some has got to say something to Dumbledore..."
"Didn't you read the prophet the other morning?" Neville Longbottom asked, butting into the conversation. "They made Umbridge Inquisitor here."
"That just give her the right to question everyone, not torture them."
"I don't think she knows the difference." Remilda replied.
Remilda zoned out the conversation around her, trying to scribble out as many answers as she could before dinner was over and she had to go to Umbridge's office. Lucy stopped behind Remilda and tapped her on the shoulder so they could get going; so they quietly made their way to Umbridge's office. Lucy's demeanor had completely changed. Earlier she had been so angry that she gladly would have continued to spout off at Umbridge, but now she was quiet and kept her eyes downward...
"Everything alright?" Remilda asked.
"I'm just thinking about what my parents are going to think..." she shrugged, "they won't say it to my face, but I know what they'll say to each other Cedric wouldn't have ever said that or something like that."
"Were you and Cedric close?"
She shrugged again, "When we were kids we were. I mean we were pretty close...but it's pretty clear that he was the favourite." she confessed. "Which wasn't such a big deal, but now that he's...dead, my parents sort of expect me to be just as...perfect as he was." as she spoke, her voice became quieter and quieter.
"I'm sure he wasn't perfect."
She scoffed, "Ask anyone here, he was." she sighed, "What about you and Raelyn? Are you close?" she asked, turning the questions around onto Remilda.
"Yeah," she said quickly, "but we aren't that much alike either. My sister is more like my mom."
"What was your mom like?"
Remilda sighed, "Like Raelyn," she said as if it was obvious, "she didn't have much patience and had a temper. It wasn't bad or anything, it made her good at her job and she was the boss in the family I guess."
"What happened?" Lucy asked, "To your mom."
Remilda sighed heavily, "She was an Auror, she worked with the Congress," she started, "when Harry told everyone that You-Know-Who was back, Congress took it seriously unlike the Ministry." she told her, "Then Death Eaters started causing problems in Florida and they were trying to recruit. My mom was one of the Aurors that went there to sort things out," she paused, "one of them...killed her."
Whenever she thought about how her mother died, she wanted to be sick. She couldn't imagine the green curse hitting her. And in the blink of an eye killing her. Had it hurt? Had it been painless?
"I'm sorry..." Lucy said as they paused right outside Umbridge's office. "Uh, if you need to talk ever, you can talk to me...if you want, I mean."
Remilda smiled a bit as she knocked on the door, "Thanks."
The doors knob turned and the door was opened. As it did, Remilda saw Umbridge sitting behind a desk as she set her wand down after the door opened to reveal the room. It was obnoxious. The walls were bright pink, there were dozens of little vintage looking frames that had little cats on them and there was a soft meowing sound coming from each of them.
"Shut the door behind you please," she said as they walked in. Remilda did as she said, her eyes still wandering around the pink room. "Miss Diggory, take a seat here please." Umbridge said as she rose up and went to a smaller desk with a piece of parchment. Then on the other side of the room, there was an empty one.
Lucy nodded a bit and slowly put her bag down on the floor by the desk, "Will I be doing lines tonight?"
Umbridge nodded, "I've found that it works quite well with your classmates so I think it will work just fine for you." she smiled as Lucy sat down. "I want you to write...I will have respect for others until it sinks in."
Lucy glanced at Remilda, pain was already in her eyes. "Yes, Professor."
As soon as Lucy picked up the quill, Umbridge turned her eyes to Remilda. And Remilda felt her heart begin to beat a little faster.
"I have my assignment from Monday, professor," she said putting a hand on her bag, "I didn't have time to do Tuesday's. I can get it in by morning for sure if that's okay..."
"I'll think about it," she said gently as she walked towards the empty desk, "you can have a seat here, Miss Potter."
Remilda's heart dropped at her response. She knew she wouldn't get an extension. She slowly lowered herself into the desk as Umbridge grabbed a piece of paper and a quill from her desk. "What lines will I be writing for you tonight?" she asked as she set it down on the desk that Remilda sat it.
Umbridge picked up her wand again and gave it a swish towards Lucy. "You won't be writing lines, Miss Potter, you'll be doing something rather important for me."
Remilda rose her eyebrow sharply, "What about..." she asked quietly motioning to Lucy. But Lucy didn't even seem to hear anything, she was only slowly writing her lines. Her opposite clenched in a fist beneath the desk.
"She has a silencing charm around her," Umbridge began, "Miss Potter, I understand that you tragically lost your mother this summer. And I am so sorry for that,"
Remilda looked up at her, trying to hide her confusion. What was she getting at?
"So I would understand why you would want to protect the rest of your family," she sighed, "but this is a matter of safety in our world."
Remilda stared at her blankly, "I don't know what..."
"Miss Potter," she sighed heavily as she walked around Remilda. As if she was trying to intimidate her. "the Ministry has reason to suspect that your father is involved with illegal activity, including having knowledge of where Sirius Black is. As well as trying to recruit people against the Ministry and trying to convince people of a certain Dark Wizards return."
Remilda stared at Umbridge. Her father did know where Sirius Black was. He was trying to recruit people but not against the Ministry, against Voldemort who had returned.
"And the Ministry can't seem to locate him." she finished, "So I need you to write your father and find out where he is. You seem sensible, Remilda." she said, trying to convince Remilda that she was in fact one of her favourite students. But Remilda wasn't having any of it.
Lie, she told herself. Raelyn did it all the time back at Ilvermorny.
"My father wouldn't be doing any of this," Remilda said, trying to sound convincing. "he's not a criminal like...like...like Sirius Black." she said, trying to sound shocked that Umbridge would say such things about her father. She felt a bit of guilt about mentioning Sirius. She knew Sirius wasn't a criminal either but she had to make it seem convincing.
Umbridge sighed and gave Remilda a sympathetic look, "Of course not," she paused, "but the Ministry still needs to find him for questioning."
Remilda looked down at the pen, trying to think of a way to do what Umbridge wanted but still not really help...
Thirteen year old Remilda sat next to her father on the living room floor. With their legs stretched out underneath the coffee table. Remilda had her summer reading in front of her, and her father was writing a letter to a fellow Auror. He and their mother worked opposite shifts, so one of them was always home. Remilda knew she shouldn't have been reading over his shoulder, but she couldn't stop herself.
"Dad," she began, "do you want me to go grab you a new quill?" she asked motioning to the extra dark spots on the letters in 'Saturday' where it looked like the quill had let too much ink build up.
"Being nosey, are we?" he asked, chuckling a bit. "And no thanks," he paused, "if you ever have to write someone a secret message, you make the right letters look like the quill had too much ink."
Remilda picked up the quill, "I'll write the letter. But I don't think there's a reason to..."
Umbridge smiled, "Thank you," she sighed, "you are doing me a great service. Otherwise I was going to have to ask your sister."
Remilda took a deep breath and watched as Umbridge sat down at her desk to give Remilda some space. Then she looked down at the paper.
Remilda stared at the paper, 'don't respond' was what she was trying to say. So she did some quick thinking, just stretch the truth a bit she told herself.
Remilda smiled a bit looking down at the paper; don't respond I will send to talon. Talon was her fathers nickname, it had been ever since he and his brother got their animagus form. One of the Halloween stories he used to tell Raelyn and Remilda was about their friend had to turn into a werewolf, and he taught himself (along with his brother and friends) how to be an animagus. His form was a hawk. He'd be the one to follow their friend if he got away from them and they would call him talon because of the sharp nails on a hawks feet.
"Sorry for all the ink spots, professor," she began, "I think I was getting too much ink on the quill."
Umbridge eagerly took the paper and her eyes grazed the paper, "Perfect," she smiled as she folded it and handed it back, "could you write his name on it?"
She took it back, and wrote her father's name on it and handed it back to her.
Now she just hoped her dad got the message.
