Chapter 29~ It's Not Over Yet
You dozed on one of the squashed chairs WICKED had decorated the room on the Berg with, where all the Gladers had been dumped after they'd finished eating and showering. Almost everyone was asleep now, save for a few girls and guys talking in hushed voices on the other side of the room. Thomas and Teresa were sitting side by side on a couch not too far away, and Minho was trying to talk to some girl, but her eyes were closed and her chest was rising and falling slowly.
Just as you were drifting off, you felt your chair sag as someone sat down next to you. You grunted but didn't open your eyes.
"You okay?" You recognized Newt's voice immediately.
"Fine, I guess," you mumbled, leaning over so your head rested on his chest. You could hear his heartbeat and steady breathing, and it was pleasantly soothing. After you'd... kissed, things had been fairly awkward around the two of you, but now you were so tired, the whole thing went right over your heads.
"I can't help but worry about what's going to happen next," Newt said after a long silence. You felt his voice vibrate in his chest and throat.
"They said they'd take us somewhere safe. We don't have much choice."
Newt sighed and his whole body shook. "I know, I just... don't buggin' like not knowing." You let out a breathy laugh.
"Me neither. But we do know that the Trials are over. That's a start."
A pause.
"Are they really though?" You sat up and turned to stare at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, they're WICKED. They've lied to us countless times. They lied to get us all in the bloody Scorch. The probably lied to get us into the Maze."
"You don't know that."
Newt raised an eyebrow and you dropped your gaze to the ground. "Why? Do you really trust them? After every bloody thing, they put us through?"
"I just... want a break," you said quietly. "Don't you think if they wanted to kill us, they would've done it already?"
"Maybe they need us for something first."
You raised an eyebrow and leaned back into him again. "What would they need us for?"
"Why would they put a bunch of teenagers in a giant Maze and force them to fight their way out?"
You sighed and closed your eyes again. You didn't know why. Honestly, nothing WICKED had done so far made any sense whatsoever.
And then there was the whole memory-wiping thing. When you'd been at WICKED headquarters with Janson, he'd told you about the Swipe, and how they'd planted it in your brain to wipe your memory and control your movements whenever they wished.
"They've left us with so many unanswered questions," you muttered, already half asleep.
"Hey, look at me."
You grunted but grudgingly opened your eyes to meet Newt's steady gaze. "We're going to be fine, alright?" Tommy and Minho aren't buggin' goin' down easy either. We all have each other, and we're gonna figure it out." You nodded and smiled at Newt, and he leaned back and closed his eyes, relaxing into the chair.
You didn't know where you were headed. What would happen after you landed. For now, you forced your mind blank and closed your eyes. Sleep took you almost immediately.
(Y/N)? (Y/N)? Are you asleep?
I should congratulate you for making it this far, especially considering you should have never have been put down in the Maze in the first place.
But it's not over yet. You're not getting away that easily.
And I'm sure you'd like an explanation.
