Chapter 13~ Group B

You let them take you back to your room -- because, well, you didn't have much of a choice. You were cornered, defenseless, and in a whole lot of trouble. You reckoned you just got lucky that woman -- who you later learned was Ava Paige herself -- showed up right in the nick of time.

"We're just going to take a few more tests," she told you, standing the door to your room. You sat down on one of the many beds and nodded, looking down at your clasped hands.

"How long is it going to take?" you asked quietly. Aiva Paige glanced back at you and smiled.

"The rest of the night. You might as well get some sleep."

You lay on your back as the door closed, and shut your eyes tightly. The room was already dark, so closing your eyes didn't make much of a difference. For a while, you just started into the fuzzy, inky blackness, until sleep finally took you.

You dreamt about Newt. About Thomas and Minho and the other Gladers. About the Maze, and the boys running through it, under the hard, grey sky. They turned corner after corner, Thomas, and Minho in the lead, Newt moving as fast as he could go with his limp.

There were Grievers, and then, one by one, the boys ran and jumped off the cliff, disappearing into nothingness.

You floated above, unable to stop them. Unable to call out to Newt as he lept off the edge and vanished.

You awoke to clamoring. Light pooled behind your eyelids and noise bustled around you as if someone had suddenly turned them on with the flip of a switch.

Your eyes snapped open, and you lurched into a sitting position. You were sitting in your bed, all alone in your room, but voices continued to sound outside your door.

"Calm down!" someone shouted, muffled by the door. Without thinking, you swung your feet onto the ground, pushed yourself up, and burst into the next room.

The smell hit you before anything else. A thick, putrid wave of raw sewage, so heavy you could practically taste it. Your eyes watered, and your hand instantly went to your nose, though it did little to block the stench.

"Who are you?" The question was hissed at you, by a girl, standing just a few feet away from you. You really didn't know what to look at first. The clustered group of random girls, the weird, doorless walls, or the bloated dead bodies that hung from the ceiling in the center of the room. Probably what was causing the smell.

"W-where am I?" you stuttered, eyeing the girl suspiciously. She had dark skin and hair cut close to her scalp. She wore a loose fitting t-shirt, light pants, and a stern scowl.

"How'd you get here?" she shot back. "Where's Aris?"

"Aris?" What was she talking about?

"Yeah, scrawny guy, big nose, tan skin? Seen him anywhere?" The sarcasm was apparent in her voice, and you raised an eyebrow wearily.

"What makes you think I know where he is?"

"Because you just came out of his room!"

"Harriet!" another girl called, running up to the pair of you. "We've agreed we need to talk..." She trailed off as she caught sight of you. "Who's this?"

Harriet smirked a little, crossing her arms and shifting her weight to the other foot.

"That's what I've been trying to find out."

The smell had gotten worse, and you had to force down a gag, pulling your grey shirt high over your nose.... and that was when you noticed. Your clothes were different.

Before, with your encounter with Aiva Paige, you'd worn a longsleeved shirt that had kept sticking to your sweaty arms.... but now you wore a sleeveless, gray tank top, a thick, brown sweatshirt tied around your waist.

"What the..."

Harriet sighed loudly and set a rough hand on your shoulder.

"Okay girlie, we obviously need to talk some things out, so why don't we go back into Aris's... er, your room and discuss this nice and calm." You shoved her off, but nodded, letting her lead you back the way you had come. The horrid smell faded a little as you closed the door. Harriet was followed by a few other girls, who practically herded you to the back of the room, where you sat down in the corner on a cleanly made bed.

"So," a girl to your left sighed and leaned forward to stare at you, hand clasped in front of her. "How did you get here?"

"I-I... don't know," you stuttered, glancing back and forth between Harriet and the blonde girl next to her, who was glaring at you just as intensely. "The last thing I remember, I was at WICKED... and then I fell asleep... and then..."

"You were at WICKED?" This came from a girl to your right.

"Well, they took me out of the Maze, and I woke up there," you muttered. They probably thought you were insane.

"Hold up." Harriet's eyes were wide with surprise. "You were in a Maze? W-with Grievers and stuff?" You narrowed your eyes at her. How did she know?

"Yeah, how did you...."

"It's the same experiment..." You were just about to open your mouth to ask what she meant when the door banged open, and a figure appeared in the doorway.

"What's going on?" It was the blonde girl who'd been sitting next to Harriet who answered.

"This girl woke up in Aris's room," she called. The figure moved out of the light, and after a minute, you were able to make who it was.

Tesera.

Before you could stop yourself, you were on your feet, eyes wide with surprise.

"What?"

You'd never really spoken to Teresa, but you definitely knew what she looked like, and there was no mistaking. She was standing right in front of you, eyebrows furrowed, hands on her hips.

"What'd you do with Aris?" she hissed, taking you by surprise. She seemed different... more hostile.

"I-I don't know what that is," you stuttered, raising your hands defensively. "Teresa? What happened? Where are the boys? How'd you get out of the Maze?" You had a billion questions bouncing around in your head, but Teresa just glared at you, obviously not intending to answer any of them.

"Guys, you should come back out. The bodies have gone." She turned to address the rest of the group, like your whole conversation hadn't even happened. After she spoke, she flashed the cluster of girls a smile, and spun on her heel, walking briskly from the room. You turned to Harriet, speechless.

"I know," she said with a shrug. "She just woke up here a little while ago, and now, she's acting all high and mighty like she can just order us around."

"Is she... okay? Did she hit her head or something?" Harriet stood up, signaling the others to do the same. You couldn't help but notice she looked more like the leader, the way the girls followed her every movement.

"Come on guys, she said the bodies are gone.... somehow. If they are, then it's safe to go back out there." Without another word, she moved to the door, and everyone followed her. You waited for the last girl to leave before you let out a breath you didn't realize you'd been holding. You really needed to find out what the hell was going on here.

Finally, you worked up the courage to move outside and back into the clamor of voices and light, which stabbed at your eyes like sharp daggers. There were actually a few girls clustered around the plastic panel outside your door, talking urgently amongst themselves. Their eyes grew wide as they caught sight of you, and they grew quiet. You shot them a spiteful glare and turned to see what they'd been grouped around. Behind the panel, was a piece of clean, white paper, with your name neatly typed across the top.

                                                                      (Y/N) (L/N), Group A,

                                                                      Subject A14

                                                                      The Accident

"What the...." The Accident? What was that supposed to mean? You were ripped from your thoughts as a loud scream sounded from the other side of the room.

"He's in my head!" She shouted. "Get him out! Get out of my shuck head!" It was Teresa, and she was clawing desperately at her scalp like she was trying to rip her own hair out by its roots. "Get out!" A few girls rushed to her immediately, but you just stood and stared. She shook her head vigorously, and then she relaxed with a small sigh.

"Teresa, what happened?"

"Who was that?"

"Are you okay?" She just nodded and waved them off, probably wanting to pretend nothing had happened.

You didn't really know what to do, so you walked back into the room, doing your best to put the sign out of your head. As long as you were stuck here, there wasn't much point worrying about it.
