× Chapter I ×
Through my dark brown eyes, I saw nothing but his same colored eyes that stared right back at me. I almost saw the reflection of my own in his pure, loving iris. It was like the abyss but it had made room for the light. I once thought I stopped swimming in them but I realized it never went away. A pool of emotions came running down my spine. He could have read me like a book from a mile away. He never wanted to read my eyes ever since. If he were to read mine, he would know why I looked at him. I loathed this moment, I should be moving but I cannot.
I focused back on his phone. He was showing me a video on YouTube that I should have been paying attention to. I couldn't help it. So I tried to watch this cartoon that he loves. It's an anime that I forgot the name of. I couldn't help but notice that he was staring right back at me. I did the same.
"Hey," he grabbed my attention.
"Huh," I wasn't paying attention at all.
"What's on your mind?"
"Oh, just you," I responded.
"What about me?" He became curious.
I so wanted to pretend like I'm still watching the video on his phone, but he knew that would be a lie. I shortened my delay and answered him.
"Just how we ended up and how my view is amazing." I smiled.
Just then, his phone rang before he could say anything back. He stopped the video and stepped outside to answer the call. Meanwhile, I remained sitting on the stool. I took a sip of my java chip frap while I looked at him outside.
My phone then rang which alarmed me that it was already five in the afternoon. Aside from that, I also had gotten a text from my mother sending me a quick errand to run. I texted her back and said 'okay.' A couple of seconds later came and Javi came back inside.
"I've got a call." Javi heaved a sad sigh.
"Where to this time?" My eyes glistened.
"Palm Springs to Indio."
"Let me know eventually how long it might take."
"Of course I will."
"Oh, I won't be walking home," I told him my plans. "I've got a grocery errand to run for my mom."
"Want me to walk you there?"
"If that's the case, then text Wilbert to pick you up there instead of here." I insisted.
"Nah, I can make it back here before he picks me up."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, woman." He reassured me.
"Okay, jeez."
He patted and messed up the top of my hair before I had gotten up from the stool. I took the last sip of my coffee before Javi grabbed it and threw it in the trash bin. I packed my stuff back into my shoulder purse as my name had been shouted from the other end of the place.
"Avigail!" A woman my age called out.
I brought my purse with me as I walked to the other side of the café. I got my bag of two brownies as I looked over my shoulder and saw Javi behind me. We got outside and walked toward Albertsons within three minutes. When we had gotten inside, my mom and my little brother were already inside waiting for me. I gave her the bag filled with brownies as I turned around to face Javi.
"Is that your boyfriend?" My brother asked me.
"Uh, no," he responded politely and waved at him. "I'm just her friend."
My cheeks flushed pale red as Javi saved me. I waved them off as I walked Javi out of the store. I saw a white van that came in from the road to the left going towards Starbucks.
"Better get going," I warned him. "Wilbert is about to be there shortly."
"Don't you think I know that?"
It wasn't a question that needed answering. Even if it did need to be answered, I wouldn't have the time to reply. He sped off running to his coworker. I came back inside the store and started to help shop for food.
I came along the vegetable part of the store as I saw mom grabbing carrots and cabbages. My brother sat inside the cart as I came by and poked his nose.
"No!" He complained.
I laughed it off as I headed for the celery and shoved two of each of them in two plastic bags. My brother Ivan pointed to those mushrooms in front of me as I grabbed everything else my mom wanted me to get. Before we went to a different section, she grabbed my undivided attention I thought I would never hear.
"Make sure you cook a lot of vegetables in your food while we're away."
"Oh, where are you going?" I asked with a dull voice and tried not to be surprised.
"We're all going to be away in Texas for the next five days."
"Did something happen?" I became worried.
My sister lives in Texas with my little nephew and brother-in-law. The thought of her going away with my brother and his father never bothered me one bit. I did question it as she said five days.
"No, we'll just be sending them furniture."
"How will that take five days?" I then thought about it. "Are you going to spend time there for a little bit?"
"Yes, so eat frequently and don't starve yourself."
"I won't," I lowered my voice.
I kept my eyes away from her. It didn't stop me from thinking about having Javi over for a little while. It couldn't hurt.
