Chapter 25; Elizabetta
Song: Paranoid - I Prevail
The four turtles and I are on the roof of the building Karai held me in. The wind is strong and chilly; a shiver passes down my spine. I rub my arms furiously to retain body heat.
I catch Leonardo looking at me. "What?" I ask him. I have to admit that it feels nice to be friendly towards him again. Our problems have been pushed aside to deal with a bigger one. I hope the peace will last for a long time to come.
"We're going to have to travel across the rooftops," Leonardo tells me, a sympathetic look on his face.
I suddenly feel uneasy. I've been avoiding peeking over the side of the building to prevent myself from nausea. There's no way I can do that while jumping from roofs. But I'm not about to admit any of that, no siree.
"Why is that a big deal?" Raphael asks. He looks puzzled.
Leonardo glances at me before he answers. "She's afraid of heights."
Michelangelo speaks up from beside me. "Lizzy can ride on my back!" he suggests in his usual, happy voice.
"You're limping," Donatello scoldd him in a protective kind of way. "There's no way you're carrying anything other than your nunchucks."
Michelangelo gives his brother a puppy-pout face, but Raphael interrupts before he can complain.
"I'll carry her," The red-clad turtle volunteers. "I'm the least injured," he adds as Leonardo opens his mouth to protest. "And you all are going to need your strength when we get to TCRI."
There's a short pause. I don't like the idea of taking a piggyback ride on a mutant turtle, especially the one who has hated me since the beginning. He seems like the kind who would pretend to drop me just for laughs.
"He's right, you know," Donatello finally breaks the silence.
Leonardo studies Raphael for a moment, and then he nods. "Go ahead."
The red-clad turtle bends down in front of me. I climb onto the back of his shell nervously, trying to disguise the shaking of my hands. I wrap my arms loosely around his neck to hold on.
Leonardo leads the way across the rooftops. I clutch onto Raphael for dear life as the ground becomes too far out of reach. I end up closing my eyes, thinking it will calm my pounding heart. It doesn't.
"So, Donnie," I try to be social, though I'm mostly just keeping my mind away from the thought of an inevitable death. "What exactly did the Kraang do to my mind?"
"Oh, right!" I can practically see a light bulb appear above Donatello's head. "I only have a theory, but it's a strong one. I feel that the information in your brain that Shredder wants is going to be used as a weapon. He obtained a critical part of your memories and now he is getting the Kraang to synthesis it into something powerful. The problem is, I don't know what he's using it for or how he's making it. That's why we need to get to the Kraang's headquarters. They must have some kind of data stored there."
"Wait," Leonardo stops him before he can go on. "So you're saying that the Shredder could be plotting to use her own memories against her?"
I blink. It sounded a lot less terrifying when Donatello explained it. However, it also seems ridiculous. Use my own experiences against me? How is that even possible?
"It's a long shot, I know," Donatello replies. "But it's the only thing that makes sense. Why else would he target the 'fear' section of your brain?"
"My fears?" I feel my muscles tense up at the thought of the Shredder finding out what I'm afraid of. Actually, it makes me uncomfortable for anyone to know my weaknesses. "Why my fears? Why me?"
"I don't know," Donatello admits. "That's what I was trying to say. I just know what my computer and the results of your blood test told me."
"Don't worry, Lizzy," Michelangelo speaks from beside me. "We won't let anything happen to you!"
I can only hope he's right.
We finally arrive at our destination. Raphael lowers me off of his back. My legs quiver in relief that they touch the ground again. I take several deep breaths to calm myself down.
A huge building stands before me. It's unnaturally shaped and it stands out from the other structures on the block. Men in black suites are busily traveling in and out of the automatic doors.
I look at Michelangelo, who is close to my side. "How are we supposed to stop the Kraang when there are people around?" I whisper. I don't want any innocent victims getting hurt.
"Relax, dudette," Michelangelo replies softly. "Those aren't regular New Yorkers. They're the Kraang in disguise."
I stare closely at the men. They all look the exact same, from the outfits to the facial features. There isn't a single variance between them. It's kind of creepy.
"Wow," I comment. "They could have been a bit more original."
Michelangelo flashes me an amused grin.
"What do we do now, fearless leader?" Raphael asks Leonardo with a hint of mockery in his voice. "There's no way we can sneak in when those Kraangdroids are crawling around."
Leonardo's dark blue gaze survey the premises before he finally answers. "We're going to have to take them down. But we need to keep quiet, or we might alert our enemies inside."
Raphael's green eyes flashes with interest. "Stealth attack!" he whispers excitedly.
"Aww," Michelangelo complains. "I hate stealth attacks! I always get caught."
"That's why you're staying here." Leonardo's eyes connect with mine. "Will you stay with Mikey? It's better to separate in groups than alone."
I know that's his way of telling me I'll get us discovered. I'm not offended, however, since he's right. I haven't been trained in stealth attacks at all.
I nod. "We'll hang back," I tell him. I act nonchalant so it doesn't register with Michelangelo that we're getting left behind.
"As soon as they're down and I give the order, follow us inside," Leonardo commands Michelangelo and I. "And remember: don't do anything Master Splinter wouldn't do."
The blue leader leads Donatello and Raphael out of our hiding spot. They creatively make their way to the TCRI building by jumping behind structures. Once they're close enough, Raphael hides behind one side of the building, while Donatello takes the other. Leonardo lurks behind a van, his eyes glowing white through the darkness.
Then they begin. Leonardo demonstrates first by picking off a Kraangdroid and smashing it before his companions notice. Raphael and Donatello mimic him skillfully. They continue to quietly destroy their enemies until no more are in sight.
Donatello pad up to the large entrance doors and hook his T-Phone up to it. The lock comes undone within a matter of seconds, and the doors slide open. Leonardo make a hand motion to Michelangelo and I.
"Let's go," the orange-clad turtle says with a glance at me. He and I race across the street and to the team, who are hiding behind a wall next to the doors.
From where I stood before, all I could see was darkness inside. But now that I'm closer, I can make out some odd, oversized gadget directly in middle of the floor. It looks very similar to a control panel. I wonder what it's for.
I also notice a few blue and silver robot things walking around. I instantly recall the blue man I saw giving Stockman a vile back before the turtles found me. They look the same.
"What are those things?" I breathe to no one in particular.
"Those are just another set of machinery-armor that the Kraang use," Donatello explains softly. "If you look into the belly of it, you can see the actual nuisance itself."
I do what Donatello says, and I instantly wish I hadn't. The Kraang looks hideous, like pink brains. They have multiple long, flimsy arms that only add to vomiting urge I have.
"You ok, Lizzy?" Michelangelo asks me. "You look green. Greener than me, even."
I push away my nauseous feeling. "I'm alright," I mumble, not sounding reassuring in the slightest.
"We need to move," Leonardo breaks in. "The room is a complete circle, and the lab is in the very back. Donnie and Raph, you take the left side of the circle. Knock out all of the Kraangdroids you can. Mikey, Lizzy and I will do the same on the right side and meet you at the lab entrance."
Right," Donatello agrees, while Raphael nods once.
Leonardo swiftly glances over his team. Then he says, "Attack!"
And we run at the Kraang.
