Ate age eighteen
I remember sitting in a diner at twelve in the morning.
Sam and I would often walk down the street to a twenty-four hour diner. The place would always be vacant besides the occasional people on road trips coming in for a bite.
I loved going to the diner so late simply because it was for the most part empty. It was peaceful, a place to clear our heads and talk about how our days went. I also loved how Sam would get all wound up about things during that time of day. He always had something to vent or rant about.
He'd say something worth thinking about, and I'd sit there processing it.
He was always such a philosophical thinker. Loved life and loved to talk about his personal views of it.
He'd always be chatting away, and I'd peacefully lean on one hand and sip my tea, just admiring and taking in his broad outlook on life.
Man, I could listen to him talk for hours on end about his perspective. I loved everything he had to say about his theories on the meaning of life and happiness.
I absolutely loved sitting in that diner and discussing our future lives while watching cars pass by so early in the morning.
Something about the setting just felt so homely to me. In those moments, I felt safe. Even while thinking about the nights we'd spent there, I feel safe.
Feeling absolutely safe because it was us against the world.
Thats exactly what he'd tell me too, each time we'd go.
He'd get real quiet as it was almost time for us to leave. Usually stare out the window for a short while before pealing his eyes off of the town and fixing them on me.
His smile would only widen as he'd tell me "its us against the world, 'till the end"
To that I'd always nod and smile back.
I feel like the waiter always took that as her queue to come and take our plates and bring our bill to us, because right after he'd say that, there she would be.
I always hated leaving the diner because I wanted those nights to last. I never wanted them to be memories, but I guess thats all they are now. And I guess eventually I'll come to except that.
