At age six..
I remember there was barely a breeze. Nothing to help carry us on the monkey bars during second recess. A tiny blond kid swung bar to bar, attempting to cross them. I sat on a toy near by, pretending I was batman with some other kid while waiting patiently for my own turn on the bars as he made his way to the end. He was pretty good at them, but not that good considering he had fallen and scraped his knee.
I went over to him as soon as I saw the blood running down his leg. His lip quivered as he tried to refrain from crying.
"Its ok to cry" I told him. He was startled because he never even noticed I sat in front of him.
That being said, a single tear trickled down his cheek. Followed by a few more as he screwed his eyes shut. He rocked back and forth slightly, holding onto the sides of his knee, squeezing it. I moved his hand away from it, all thats really doing is making him lose more blood.
He winced as he let go and let out a line of 'ows'. I felt bad that it hurt so bad, and I didnt just go over to him to watch him cry, I was going to help him.
"I'm a superhero, you know" I told him. I smiled as my eyes dropped to my Batman shirt, then lifted back up to look at his.
He sniffed and wiped his eyes before shaking his head. "No you're not." He lifted his shirt up to wipe away any excess tears, revealing his stomach. He was so pale, I'm glad I wasnt blinded.
I can still remember how offended I was. I dont know if I actually believed I was batman, or if I was just mad he didnt believe me.
"yes I am, I can even fix your leg" I told him, crossing my arms.
He narrowed his eyes at me and said "prove it" before standing up and limping to the start of the monkey bars and going the latter to help him stand.
A smile spread across my face like soft butter on toast. I stood and held out my hand to him, so I could wrap it around my shoulder and helped carry him to the boys bathroom.
It was difficult because even though he was a toothpick, I was weak. I could barely pick up a spoon, let alone support a human being.
"I'm Colby by the way" I told him as I let him go.
After doing so, he propped himself up on the sink counter. I patted a clear spot, telling him to jump up and sit down.
"Sam" he smiled at me and took my hand to shake.
I nodded in response then got a paper towel and wet it. He sat down on the sink counter and I wiped away any blood there was. He winced at the contact of the towel.
"Sorry" I murmured. I took the cloth and threw it into the trash before pulling a bandaid out of my pocket and patching him up.
"Its ok and thanks, but this doesnt prove you're a superhero" he smiled at first, but when that fell he scrunched his nose.
"Yes it does. Batman doesnt have any real powers. I dont either, but I still help people"
"Ok. Well thanks... Again"
"No problem, my mom always makes me carry bandaids. I fall a lot too" I rolled up my shorts so he could see the bandaid on my knee too.
The smile on his face only widened, and from that moment on we were inseparable.
