At age nineteen | part 2

I remember waiting for him to come home.
I thought the day was going to be perfect. Every single thing was going according to plan, but one thing was off.
I sat alone in my best black suit, waiting a life time for Sam to get home, but he never showed.
I kept nervously checking the time on my phone, then getting up and pacing around the room, right before sitting down again.
I repeatedly did that throughout the day. I kept calling him too, hoping that someone would pick up on the other line, even if it wasnt him. I just needed someone to pick up so that I knew he was around, but nobody was picking up.
In fear for his safety I messaged his parents and a couple of our friends,   but most of them hadn't heard from him at all that day either.
As the day grew older, a deep feeling of anxiety grew inside of me. I was on edge the entire day. The entire situation was absolutely nerve recking.
It wasnts like him to be late. It wasnt like him to be gone for hours without texting me or picking up the phone. It wasnt like him to not talk to anyone. I knew something had to be wrong.
Finally, after several hours of panicking and trying to get ahold of him, someone called me. I dont know what I was thinking for not checking the caller ID, but I just answered it without any hesitation and began to talk.
"Sam! Thank god you're alright, where have you been?"
Thinking it was him, I felt so relieved, but that didnt last.
All I could hear from the other line was muffled weeping. Unsure who it was, I glanced at the contact to see it was Sam's mother.
In that moment, I was yet again filled with angst. My mouth had gone completely dry and my palms began to sweat.
"Colby, Sam is in the hospital. We had just gotten a call saying he was in a crash... I- they-They arent sure if he'll be ok." She sobbed.
I didnt mean to dramatically drop my phone, but I had just lost all capability to hold onto it.
I froze for a moment, just blankly staring at the wall. I tried and tried to comprehend what his mother had even said to me, but I couldnt seem to. It was like I didnt want to take it in. However, I eventually did. Once I did, I ran. I ran straight out of my apartment, got into my car, and quickly drove to the closest hospital. I wasnt even sure if he would be at that one, but I didnt care. I had to find him, and I had to see him.
