Kris

I woke up to the sound of someone rummaging around through a box. Through my bleary eyes I could barely make out the shape of Lanie digging through a box with some of my things in it. Beside her was a large leather bag. She turned around and saw I was awake.

"You're awake. Good." Her voice sounded cold and distant. "Help me pack."

"Pack what?" I asked hesitantly.

"You're going back. Beth told me what you said, and she said you were really delirious. I know better. If what you say is true, you have much more important things to be doing. I don't know who you are or how you got here, but you obviously have important business to attend to. I won't just stand here and let you get stuck here." She spoke with knowledge. She knew what was going on.

"How do you know about-"

"I was in your situation once. I was sent here to try and fix things, but this world fucks with you. Anything that can get in your way, will. I wasn't fast enough. The only true home I've ever known is gone forever, stuck in limbo, and I can never remember what it was like. I understand the pain." She motioned for me to help her pack some clothes away in the leather suitcase. I got down on my knees and shoveled some sweaters in.

"It's funny, the only thing keeping me sane was you. Well, not you, but my Kris. And then they were stolen from me. When I realized that I might have a chance to get them back, it was almost too much to handle. I should've known it was too good to be true." Finally, she zippered it closed and handed me the handle.

"Look," she began. She looked me in the eyes and I saw a tired and quickly fading hope. "I want you to promise me two things: one, that you'll try to find out what happened to my child, and two, that you won't let that or anything else get in the way of your return. Don't make my mistake." With that, she pushed me out of the house.

"Do not ever come back here."

She slammed the door shut, and I began walking in a shocked silence.

I feel like this chapter sucks. Sorry that you had to wait so long and this is what you get for it. It'll get back to the main plot soon.
