30 - No Cure, No Safety, No Hope

A woman smiled happily at a monitor showing a group of teenagers that were gathering around an elevator that would come up from the ground. She turned away when a thin man rushed into the room.

"She's made it in safely, Ma'am," he informed her with a look of excitement on his face.

The woman tapped her finger on the metal table looking at the man thoughtfully. "Prepare for Phase Two."

He nodded and left the room as quickly as he came. The woman turned back around before observing the teenagers.

"It has to work," she whispered. "There has to be a cure."

"There is no cure for the Flare," a man stated. "All WICKED is doing is torturing innocent kids for a hopeless cause. The world is ending, and they're helping it end quicker. Now, I don't know why she would go with them knowing these facts. Maybe she was desperate, I don't know. But what I do know is that she's a traitor and a liar. I don't deal with traitors and liars very well as you know. So, if she gets out, do not hesitate to send a bullet through her skull."

The group nodded understanding the mans instructions.

"We can't allow them to do this, It's not human. Our humanity is all we have left, if we lose that then we are as bad as those cranks outside. She has lost her humanity, there is no getting it back. It might be hard for some of you to understand this because she was your friend, but she is long gone. She puts on an act so well conceived that she never breaks character. You might have thought she was a sweet girl, you were wrong. All she wanted to do was survive, no matter the cost. Even if that meant going to the enemy. They have the technology, and the resources, but all they are is cruel and greedy. WICKED can't be trusted, and neither can she."

"Minho, calm down. Calm down!"

The boy continued to punch the wooden wall until his knuckles were covered in blood.

"I know you're upset, I am too, but you need to stop before you seriously hurt yourself," Newt said.

"I can't calm down. They took her away. We didn't even get to bury her body, Newt. No one saw what that slinthead did to her. I'm just, so angry!" he stated, punching the wall again. "When we get out of here, I'm going to give those shuck creators a piece of my mind. They're going to pay for what they did to us, to her."

"They will. We'll make sure of that. They won't get away with this, it's bloody awful. They let kids die and all they do is stand by and watch. Just like they did with her," he sighed. "When we get out, this will not go unpunished."

"No, it won't."

"They did!" a girl shouted. "They actually did it!"

The lab broke out into cheers. People laughed, cried, but their celebrating was cut short when a woman raised her hand. Everyone became silent as they waited for her to speak.

"It's not over yet," she pointed out. "It will be over when the cure is found and millions are saved. So, please, let's get into positions."

"You heard her!" a gray haired man shouted when no one moved.

People then began to rush in various directions. They pressed buttons, changed clothes, grabbed weapons. The woman walked to the side of the thin gray haired man while watching the frenzy of people.

"Remember, one of them has to die," she reminded him.

He nodded. "It's one life to save millions. I know what we have to do, and I will do anything to get the results we need."

"I know you will Janson," she said with a smile playing on her lips.

A group of dirty people were gathered around a table. No one spoke or even moved.

"Lots of them are going to die. Too many," a man said breaking the silence. "We don't have enough weapons or people to take them down just yet. But take my word for it, we will stop them."

The mood in the room lightened a bit, but everyone still felt dark grey clouds forming above their heads.

The fat man slammed his fist onto the table. "So many more human beings would be alive if they used that money for something that would actually help people. It's infuriating!"

He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. "We need gather more immunes. It's the only way."

"To get the cure, there's something you must do," Janson said, crossing his arms while looking at the group gathered in front of him.

"And what's that?" a girl asked.

"You must kill Thomas."
