02 - Not Knowing
I awoke to a horrid crunching, grinding sound. It was so loud and alarming I sat straight up.
I was on a bed, in a room by myself. I got to my feet and looked out a cracked, dirty, window. It seemed to be becoming darker but I couldn't see any sun.
The crunching sound continued and I became more confused to what it was. I scanned my eyes over the walls until they stopped over the gaps. They were closing.
How is that even possible? They looked like they weighed a million tons! This place is giving me a headache.
It popped into my mind that I still had no idea what my name was. I could remember some things but nothing about me. I pushed my eyes closed and tried to force the memories in. When nothing happened I huffed in defeat.
The doors finally closed with one big 'boom!' It made me jump slightly, my heart pounding inside my chest. Now I was on edge.
I straightened out my maroon t-shirt before slowly opening the door to the bedroom. I knew I was on the second floor from looking out the window, so I needed to find stairs. I didn't know where I was going to run considering my escape plan closed off. But I knew I had to go somewhere.
I peeked my head out and looked down an empty hall. Opening the door the rest of the way I quickly walked out. I found the stairs at the end of the hallway, no people to be seen.
As I was making my way down them, the third step creaked. I sucked in my breath and stood completely still. I tried not to make a sound but I felt like my heart was beating so loudly everyone could hear. To my luck, no one did.
Swiftly, I descended down the rest of the stairs before bolting for the wooden door. I turned the door knob feeling proud and successful. But as I pulled the door in and was about to run out I crashed into someone, again.
I fell onto my butt and groaned. Looking up, I saw an extended hand. Sighing, I grabbed it and I was pulled to feet.
"We got to stop meeting like this Greenie," the boy who ran into me said.
He had strong looking arms with a shirt that was covered in spots of sweat. His skin was tan and he had black, perfect, hair.
At least five other boys were behind him, all looking at me. I felt suddenly nervous with all the attention. I took a few steps backwards, almost running into a table. The Asian boy, Mr. Perfect Hair, snickered at me.
"What's your name?" he asked.
I cleared my throat, planning on speaking. I had to stand up for myself sometime. I had to stop looking like a scared little girl.
"I- uh- I," was all that came out. I mentally punched myself for that.
"Looks like the girly has some speaking problems," a boy behind perfect hair commented. The other boys chuckled with him. But perfect hair just stared at me.
"Maybe her tongue got cut off before she came up from the box," another one added. They broke into fits of laughter.
"Slim it!" commanded the Asian boy.
'What does that even mean?' I thought. Apparently it makes them be quiet.
"Do you remember your name?" he questioned.
I shook my head.
"Well, guess you get stuck with Greenbean. Alby will want to see you, can you go back in the room where you came from?"
"W-why?" I stuttered.
He smirked. "Well it's not why you think, he'll just want to ask you some stuff."
I nodded and went back up stairs. When I got to the room, I sat on the bed and began to cry. I didn't necessarily know why. I felt like I needed to.
I heard the door open and I rapidly wiped away my tears. I looked over to see the blond boy from earlier. He must be Alby.
He sat down next to me and studied my face. "I still can't bloody believe it," he stated in an accent. He shook his head and held out his hand. "I'm Newt." Hesitantly I shook his hand. "Minho told me you didn't know your name yet, perfectly normal. So, don't freak out about that." He looked at the corner if the room, as if trying to find the right words to say.
"Every klunk head out there is making theories on why you're here. You're the first girl we've ever had so we're kind of trying to figure things out. That's what Alby is doing right now." Newt looked at me with a confused expression. "Usually the Greenies ask more questions by now."
I shrugged.
"It's fine, I like listeners more than talkers. Anyway, this place is called the Glade, it's where we've lived for the past few years. The people here, The Gladers, we all came here the same way as you, through the box. None of us could remember anything but soon our name would come to us. This place we are in is the homestead, it's where the keepers sleep, where we have gatherings, and where the Med-Jacks take care of shanks."
"There's lots more to explain but you'll get to it on your own. The last thing I have to tell you is we have three simple rules to follow. First, everyone does their part. No slackers. Second, never hurt another Glader. You have to trust each other. Lastly, never go outside the bloody Glade, unless you're a Runner. Got it?" I nodded.
After that he asked me if I remembered anything about myself, or if someone I saw looked familiar. I shook my head, no, to all of the questions.
"You must be hungry, you were out for a day. I'll bring you some food. You will be staying in this room, Minho's, he said you could have it until we figure everything out," with that Newt left the room.
I sighed and laid back on the bed. I don't know my name, or if I have a family, I don't even know what I look like for gods sake! All I know about myself is that my hair is blonde, that's it. Nothing else.
It's so frustrating to not know.
