Chapter two - Mission Accomplished.
Amaya raced up the old, worn staircase to her bedroom. Something she had been warned countless times not to do. The stairs were not at all sturdy, they could very well fall apart simply walking them.
Without bothering to change into pajamas, she flipped her light switch off and snuggled into bed. She quickly regretted that decision.
The fabric of her jeans created extra friction against her skin which made laying down uncomfortable. Almost in an instant, she was back up and changed into sleeping clothes.
Within minutes, she was snoring. Loudly. Her chest rose and fell peacefully as she drifted further and further to sleep.
Amaya, in a lucid state, pushed her hand easily through her palm to check if she was dreaming. (A newbie's trick, in her opinion it was the most reliable.)
"Ok!" She exclaimed. "Now lets her down to business." She looked at her surroundings. For some reason, she was right outside the cave entrance. That's not where she had planned to be, but she didn't dwell on it.
After looking into the pitch black cave, she shook her head and started walking back toward her base. She was still reminiscing on what had happened the previous night. Out of all the dreams she had had, that one worried her the most. Amaya didn't know what that was in that box she had opened, and honestly she didn't much care at the moment.
The trek down the mountain trail was a breeze. The wind combined with her jogging speed made her hair fly behind her. The trail was straight down hill, she had always loved running downhill. Who doesn't? It's exhilarating.
Her feet pounding on the dirt sent dust flying everywhere. By the end of the trail she was panting hard, but she'd had fun nonetheless.
With a clear head and a backpack full of diamonds, she walked in the direction of her base.
It was a dome shaped hut shared between her and her best friends. Spade and Jasper. They had been with her for as long as She could remember. And Amaya had a near impeccable memory.
She was getting nearer to her destination. She couldn't wait to see the looks on her friends faces when they saw the gemstones.
With all the money they could potentially receive from them, they could get some serious tech upgrades. They were badly needed, the base was practically running off of prototype rooted Gameboy systems and calculators.
She jogged the rest of the way to the secluded base. There were so many trees surrounding it, you wouldn't see it if you didn't have your eyes peeled. The scenery was beautiful.
There were pretty wildflowers of all colors scattered around; there was a natural, refreshing pond within walking distance. The ducks and reptiles loved to gather around.
She knocked her their secret knock. Two knocks, then three, then one. Almost instantly, the door swung open revealing Jasper's grinning face.
"Amaya you're back! Did the mission go well? Have the diamonds? We didn't keep in touch, are you all right?"
He continued to pester Amaya with his annoying game of twenty questions but she tried her best to tune him out. "Oh my goodness, shut up."
Pushing past him, Amaya walked over to a nearby table and set her pack down roughly, spilling the diamonds out into the table.
Jaspers eyes widened and he counted them. "O-one, two, three, four, f-five!" he exclaimed grabbing Amaya by the shoulders and jumping up and down.
"Do you know what this means!?" He practically shouted into Amaya's face. His eyebrows raised to the point of almost falling off of his face.
"That you can count to five?"
"No," He scowled. "Try again."
"Umm, that you can finally buy that toothpaste you're in desperate need of?" Amaya replied with an annoying grin.
"No. It means we can buy more expensive junk that'll have a layer of dust as thick as my hair by Christmas." Said Spade, appearing out of nowhere. She was always the quiet, sneaky one. Unless you saw her, you wouldn't know she was near you. She was definitely not one to play with.
"Don't be such a downer, Spade! We're rich!" Jasper said. Their comments didn't seem to have dampened his spirits in any way. "It means that we'll finally be able to afford decent equipment!"
Amaya just stood in place with a blank face. "Congratulations Amaya! You risked your life to get us fancy rocks. We are so appreciative." She said, her voice filled with spite. She was trying to keep a grimace, but looking at Spade's and Jasper's faces made it crack into a smile.
"Oh get over yourself!" Spade said pulling her into a tight hug.
"Ya did a good." Jasper exclaimed playfully jabbing Amaya in the ribs.
"Hey!" Amaya said rubbing her side and pretending to be hurt. "That violence wasn't necessary!" She joked before putting her pack back on.
"The town is a ways over," she said. "If we want to get there by sunrise, we had better leave now."
Amaya turned And walked back out of the base, Jasper and Spade in tow. The hike to the city would be a long one.
Amaya could hear a faint beeping that seemed to be getting louder. She knew what that meant.
"Bye guys!" She said.
"What?" Her pals asked in unison.
Amaya seemed to disappear, her pack disappearing with her, though she didn't get to take it into the conscious plane.
Amaya snapped awake quickly, flipping her phone over to cease the infernal beeping it was making.
Her mother was looming over her with a scowl on her face.
"Morning!" Amaya said happily, not noticing her mothers mean look.
"Don't you dare 'morning' me at ten 'till noon young lady!" she said pointing a bony finger at her daughter. The nail on the end was bent and the cuticle needed a bit of attention.
"You're lazy, that's what you are!" Her mother said continuing. "You never do anything except sleep! Is 'physical activity' even in your vocabulary? Get up, sloth." She said snatching up Amaya's phone. She scoffed before turning and walking out.
There was a reason Amaya was always sleeping. It was so she could escape the troubles of being conscious. She was sick of always being the butt of her parents jokes about her being "fat", and "lazy", but she couldn't do anything about it. She was as fit as any other girl her age.
She got up and walked over to her old Victorian style dresser. It was one of the nicest things she owned, knobs made of pure crystal. The sad thing is, it was in the house when they arrived. It's not as if it was given to her as a gift. She opened the top drawer and took out a worn out set of clothes.
The style was more suited for a male (in fact, the shirt came from a male clothing line) than female, but she didn't mind it. It was what she liked. She put a thick rubber band around her hair making it into a messy ponytail. Well, as messy as her painfully straight hair would allow. She couldn't get frizzy morning hair if she tried.
She hurriedly threw on the clothes. Then, she pulled on a baseball cap to seal the ensemble.
She carefully went down the stairs gripping the thin railing. It had always frightened her that she could just fall down the stairs and break bones she didn't even know were bones.
Once at the bottom she walked into the kitchen and took out a bowl and milk. Just when she was about to pour herself a bowl of cereal, in walked her mother. She sure had the best timing.
"What are you doing?" She interrogated.
"Umm...making cereal," She gestured to the box as if her mothers question was the dumbest she had ever heard.
"The time to make cereal has passed. Go find something to do until I call you in for lunch." Her mom said handing her a Gala Apple. "Now go on now."
Amaya didn't need to be told twice. She knew exactly where she would be going. She had exactly two, count them again, two friends in real life. Sparrow, and Robin.
A set of twins a few houses down that had a huge back yard. And she couldn't wait to meet up with them. She raced out the door and down the street, not bothering to look for cars. There never were any.
Hopefully the rest of the day would be more eventful than her morning.
