Chapter 8- Between cell bars.

Amaya paced her cell frantically. The steady walking back and forth was not doing its job to call her nerves. She ran a hand through her black hair, a few strands coming off in her hands. Most likely caused by stress.  A loud, breathy sigh escaped her lips leaving a fog-like mist in the air. The cells were ridiculously cold.

She was about to call out for food or water, she was willing to take the risk of punishment. But just as she separated her lips, with a loud click, the lights were turned off.

Then, a loud booming voice echoed throughout the corridors. "Lights out!" Amaya assumed the voice was Kane. Amaya remained standing, why would she lay down? It was impossible for her to give way to slumber.

Impossible.

She soon found her eyelids growing heavy. Why couldn't she wake up? She wanted to leave, whatever 'mission' she was on was not meant for her. Why was this happening? Now in her life of all times?

She plopped down on the cheap twin mattress, her weight making the already thin stuffing cave in. With everything that happened that day, it was surprisingly comfortable.

She let her inner thoughts cascade out in the form of tears. Her father left, she was in jail, and she couldn't wake up. She pulled her knees up to her chest, her head fell between them.

A few cells over Spade and Jasper were having a conversation. Or, Jasper was having a conversation, Spade just replied with grunts and other noises.

"What are we gonna do?" Jasper inquired.

"Hmmph." Spade sighed from her mattress. She was idly fiddling with her hair, her eyes fixed upon a crack in the wall. A crack she put there when she punched it only a few minutes earlier.

"This is all my fault!" Jasper continued.

"Isn't it always?" Spade finally responded with words, just not the ones Jasper really wanted to hear. The harshness of her turn shot a dagger into Jasper's skin, the comment visibly hurt him.

"Never mind..." Jasper muttered, his already stressed expression sinking to one of gloom. "Goodnight." He lay on his bed and faced the wall, he had no plans of going to sleep, he couldn't. He was going to come up with a plan, he was going to finally benefit the team.

"Whatever," Spade said slightly regretting the harshness of her words. She lay down facing Jasper just in case he rolled around and wanted to talk. It was unlikely.

Back in Amaya's cell, she was laying down, still sniffling from her cry. Her eyes grew heavier and heavier until the top of her eyelid finally made contact with the bottom. Seconds later she was in a deep, dreamless sleep...in a dream. She had fallen asleep this was not possible. What was happening?!

At some point during the night when the group of friends were asleep, Kane had an idea. He walked into the main corridor, heading to a cell that was between Amaya's and her friends. It had seemed empty earlier but Kane knew it wasn't.

"Kiyon?" Kane called rattling the cell door a little, just loud enough to wake the boy up if he was sleeping.

A minute or so later a frail boy shuffled over to the edge of the cell to where he could see Kane. "Hi kane!" He said with a smile and a small wave, glimmers of hope evident behind his dirty eyes.

Kane couldn't help but chuckle at him, he was so optimistic, even confined in a jail cell. You had to admire a person with that much strength. Especially at a young age.  "Hey kiddo, how would you like some company?" Kiyon was the only inmate Kane had a soft spot for. It was pretty much impossible to dislike him. Unless of course overjoy annoys you then you would loathe him.

Kiyon's eyes lit up, you could see the excitement sparkling in his iris'. "R-really sir? D-do you mean it?"

"Of course. And I'll take that as a yes," he fiddled with the keys in his ring until finding the right one. Upon opening the cell, Kane was tackled into a hear hug by the scrawny boy. Kane was going to have to remember to give the boy an extra portion of something during the next meal time. He seemed to be getting even thinner, which in his case was not healthy.

Kane led the Kiyon down to Amaya's cell and opened it quietly. He didn't want to wake Amaya from her slumber. "Go on in," he whispered to Kiyon, he was eager to see if they would make friends. It wasn't every day that kids his age were thrown in jail.

But every time a child did arrive, it was never fair, he almost felt guilty about what happened to Amaya and her crew. Almost. It was all part of his job.

After Kiyon walked into the cell Kane closed it behind him. "Goodnight," he smiled before walking off. He had to go looking for more rule breakers. He should have been on patrol a long time ago. Opaque was going to have his skin.
