Chapter 7- Confined spaces
The words Kane had spoken resonated through out Amaya's head. Soon, all she could hear was a faint echo. "Fun...fun...fun." She was already in a bad mood with her father completely abandoning her and all, this made it so much better.
She was thrown out of her zoned out state when the sharp clicking of handcuffs was heard. She inhaled sharply, her eyes darting back. Her heart raced a mile a minute. She looked over at Riz, her amber eyes pleading for freedom. She hoped that any humanity Riz had would click into action.
She opened her mouth to give a half baked excuse about what happened, but she couldn't think of one. How were the gems even fake? Who would hide fake gems in a cave? It was then that friends like Jasper came in handy.
"But we didn't know!" He hissed struggling to free himself from the handcuffs even though he knew it couldn't be done. "You can't take us to jail! Th-this is all- if anyone, take Amaya! She's the one who found the diamonds."
She was regretting her previous thought. Yep. Dandy old friends like Jasper.
She had to bite down on her tongue fairly hard to keep from spewing off at the mouth. She had a few choice words for him.
"Shut up Jasper," Spade started. "We wouldn't be in this mess if you didn't 'need' the hottest new technology as soon as it drops."
"All of you shut your filthy mouths." Kane spat shoving the three harshly in Riz's direction. Then, Riz led them outside to a shockingly disappointing vehicle. With all the cool gear they had, a broken down stereotypical police-type car is what they drove?
"Sorry kids," Riz spoke wearily. "If it were up to me, I'd let you go."
"Well it's a good thing it's not up to you then, isn't it?" Kane practically threw all three kids in the backseat, not caring if they were comfortable. Poor Spade had actually landed on top of Jasper. Kane walked away slamming the door. "Now shut up and drive, Riz."
Amaya sat uncomfortably still, she dared not utter a peep. Spade was whispering something into Jasper's ear, but she couldn't hear what it was. She reached over and tapped Spade on the thigh and sent her a look that said, 'what's the conversation topic? I must have missed it. Y'know with the panicking for my life?'.
Instead of giving a response worth hearing, she mouthed 'Nothing'. Then suddenly, with a loud roar and a lurch, the vehicle was thrown into a steady motion.
The jerk of the car sent Jasper's head flying into the back of Kane's seat.
"Don't make me come back there," Kane snarled. He had always been a cold person, not much compassion, but he had a special hatred for thieves, and most other criminals. Being a guard was the perfect job for him. Mostly, anyway.
Riz, on the other hand, got stuck with the job. His 'best friend', Kane, had dragged him into the bleak job without much notice.
From the driver's side, Riz sent Kane a 'chill out' look. He understood that the kids were now considered outlaws, but that didn't mean they had to be treated like dirt. At least not in his book.
Just then, the vehicle suddenly stopped. No warning whatsoever, as if Riz had just put the moving car in park. All three minors regretted not putting in seatbelts as they were lurched forward.
Kane looked back at them with a snarl, "Watch the upholstery."
"Yes, we're fine, thanks for asking." Spade mumbled. Luckily neither of their captors heard them.
The door closest to Amaya was opened with a yank, the sky was now dark, the only light coming from a looming building a few yards away.
Riz gently helped Amaya and spade out of the car on the driver side. Jasper, however, was violently yanked out on the passenger side, his body fell limp for a moment before he remembered how to move.
"Ouch! Was that neces-" Jasper was cut off by a swift jab to the stomach from Kane. He doubled over in agony coughing a few times.
"Shut up, boy."
The three were lead to the tall stone building, the wide door opened creaking loudly before they stepped in. It closed immediately after with a loud bam.
The room was dark, a single lightbulb hung from a limp wire, it sent a dim glow about the room. Not being able to take in any of the scenery, they were taken through a large door on the right.
"Where are you taki-" Jasper started. He was met with a hard smack to the back of the head that made his vision go temporarily blurry. "Ung." he moaned trying to hold his head but the handcuffs restrained him.
"No talking," Kane snapped.
They stopped in front of one cell, Spade and Jasper were shoved inside and the door was locked behind them.
"Let me go!" Amaya cried. "You can't split us up. Were a te-" she was punched swiftly in the back by Kane.
"Kane, stop!" Riz exclaimed. "Don't you get it? These are children, not punching bags. I know your past was hard. Sorry. You like to hit things? Start a club, but these kids aren't ragdolls!" He shouted at the brink of tears. "I never wanted this job, but at least I treat it with respect and dignity." He curled up his lip before walking away.
Amaya was left with Kane. He seemed stunned, as if he were frozen in place, but then he snapped out of it. "C-c'mon," he said grabbing her by the arm and leading her to a cell a few yards down. For some reason, he was a little more gentle than he had been before.
Speaking of before, she was pretty sure she had a bruise on her scalp. Was that even possible?
"Here," Kane gently pushed the frail girl into the cell and closed it behind him. He looked constantly at his feet and his voice didn't have the same harsh edge to it. Did it have to do with what Riz had said?
Amaya, her heart outweighing her fear, piped up. "Are you ok?"
"Whatever, why should you care, you're just the prisoner; you probably won't make it till next week."
"You seem-"
"Shut up, and sit down." He put emphasis on each word as if it were a full sentence. He walked away without another word.
Amaya knew it was probably drawing closer and closer to morning back home, but she couldn't force herself to wake up. Little did she know, that choice was no longer up to her.
