Chapter 3

"Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. Because you chose the knight, you four are now Team RWBY, led by Ruby Rose." said Ozpin.

Winsor clapped politely, like many other students, but spotted Weiss glaring at Ruby, like she would kill the girl there and then. Ruby seemed over the moon about being elected team leader, but Weiss was shooting the girl with the most venomous glare Winsor had ever seen. And he'd lived with Weiss for years.

Winsor was so busy processing why Weiss was so upset, that he didn't realize that Ozpin had moved to his own team until Aria elbowed him.

"Winsor Schnee, Eris Harrowa, Aria Lyre, and Jake Wolfbound. Because you chose the bishop, you four are now Team WSEA (Wisteria), led by Winsor Schnee."

As the other students clapped, Winsor snuck a glance at Weiss, who had turned her back on Ruby and Winsor.

"And she says I act like a child..." Winsor murmured. The boy glanced at Ruby, who sent a million-watt smile at him.

~~~ Several days later ~~~
"Weiss did what?!?" Winsor exclaimed.
"She just stormed out of class after it ended, and then she yelled at me after I checked in on her!" Ruby replied.
"Give me ten minutes. I'll get her crap together. As usual." Winsor sighed, hanging up.
As the boy moved to call his sister, the girl in question burst into the room, nearly taking the door off its hinges and scaring Aria off her bed.
"It's totally unfair! Why did they choose that child over me?!? There must be something wrong with Ozpin, because he clearly chose wrong. I have half a min-" Weiss ranted. Winsor silenced her by smacking her in the face with a snowball.
"You good? Or do I need to do that again?" Winsor asked calmly, tossing a second snowball up and down. Weiss seethed, but sat on the bed across from her brother.
"Now. There's nothing wrong with Ozpin. It's what's wrong with you, Weiss." Winsor said. Weiss opened her mouth to reply, but Winsor held up a hand. "Ruby was chosen due to her ability to adapt and lead you three. She gave orders, you three followed. She's kinder than you, and people are more likely to listen to her. You, Weiss, are a spoiled and rich brat." Winsor continued.
"I am NOT!" Weiss snapped.
"I've lived with you for 17 years, Weiss. You get angry when the butlers didn't get your freakin' salad right. You can't have that in a team leader." Winsor growled. Weiss glowered.
"Another thing? Ruby, Jaune, myself were not chosen randomly. We were chosen based on our ability to think and adapt as things happened. You cannot do that, as far as I know. You make a plan, and you set it in stone, Weiss. Life doesn't work that way. You need to be able to overcome challenges as they present themselves, not continue on with the plan and deal with other things after. Thinking on your feet is what you need to be able to do. Even Cardin can do it to some degree, though I doubt he has any real higher brain functions." Winsor said. "Being a team leader is not based on combat prowess alone. It requires that you can work with your team, and not make them work with you."
"One of the most important things, Weiss? Making the impossible call. Something you in particular cannot do." Winsor continued.
"I can make that call!" Weiss snapped.
"A dam is about to break. At the base it is a village. Save them, or save your team?" Winsor asked.
Weiss opened her mouth to answer, but Winsor hit her with another snowball.
"You took too long. Now your team and the villagers are dead. You've failed." Winsor snapped.
"You didn't give me enough time!" Weiss shouted.
"Things happen quickly. It's like a car accident. Split-second decisions decide your fate." Winsor replied. "Now, the fault is on the team leader. When things go wrong, team leaders take the blame. You cannot make the sacrifice play, Weiss, because you're far too selfish. You'd make everyone else crawl on the wire for you, but you wouldn't do it for them. Ruby, Jaune, and I? We would. Because we care, and because it's our job. Every team leader carries that burden with them. And you, sister dearest, should be grateful that you don't have to. Now apologize to Ruby, and make up with her. Or make out, I won't judge."
Weiss slapped her brother, then exited the room.
"Went better than I expected." Winsor chuckled. The boy then moved back to his desk, tinkering with a small metal spider.
~~~

"Weiss? You up here?" Winsor called, opening the door to the roof. Little sniffles were the only reply he got.

"Did it go badly?" Winsor asked, rounding the corner. To his surprise, he found Ruby, not Weiss. The boy flopped down next to the brunette, and gave her a light hug.

"What's up, kiddo?" Winsor muttered. Ruby buried her face in his shoulder and cried, leaving Winsor's question unanswered. Winsor stroked Ruby's head, saying nothing.

"D-does Weiss hate me?" Ruby asked softly.

"No, Ruby. Weiss just...doesn't deal well with people she views as being undeserving of their position. She can't process that you were chosen over her, because of your 'childish nature' or something." Winsor whispered, unconsciously patting Ruby's head. It was, in a way, an almost motherly gesture, one Ruby hadn't expected of Winsor, and Winsor hadn't expected of himself.

"Weiss is...hard to get along with. I know that better than a lot of other people. But I also know why." Winsor said quietly, staring off into space. "But it's not my place to tell people. Just know that she'll come around. Once you prove yourself, and prove that you CAN lead, then she'll accept you."

Ruby nodded, pulling away from Winsor. She picked herself off the ground, and offered her hand to Winsor, who accepted the assistance and stood.

"Wanna train a bit? We could invite Jaune too, if he's not busy trying to seduce Weiss." Winsor chuckled. Ruby giggled, and the two teens came down from the roof.

Jaune was, coincidentally, no longer busy attempting to seduce Weiss after the girl had frozen him to the wall. He accepted the offer to train through chattering teeth after Winsor promised to get him out of the ice.

"This year will be interesting, that's for sure." Windsor chuckled as he and Ruby extracted Jaune from the ice.
