Check: Not okay
I called my mom's phone and there was no answer. "Can you tell me what's wrong?" Jacob asked. "My mom was in an accident." I said. "What? What kind?" He asked. "Is she okay?" He asked. "No I don't think so and it's a long story." "We have plenty of time." He said motioning to the open road in front of us. It didn't take to long to cross into the state line back into Washington. I was finally able to call 911 to get my mom some help. Once I knew she was safely in the ambulance on her way to the hospital I calmed down some.
"The reason why I left was, I was dating this jerk named Kyle. He had gotten abusive and I had tried on multiple occasions to leave but he always threatened me. So I had to leave after the last time he beat the crap out of me. I went to my mom's house to tell her goodbye. I feel so stupid. I thought he'd just give up, let it go.... but now she's in danger." I said said sobbing. Jacob put his hand on my knee. "It's okay, you couldn't have known." He said. "I just feel so stupid." I said again. "I know but you thought if you just left he would let it go. And I don't think that's wrong. I just hate that he thought treating you like that was okay and that you wouldn't leave." He said bitterly.
"I don't know what I ever saw in that guy. I guess I liked that he liked me." I said. "What?" He asked confused. "I don't know, I guess I didn't wanna be single." I said sadly. "Who does?" He said. "Well now you know my stupid little secret." I said. "I'm sorry you felt you had to keep that from me." He said. "It's not like that, it's just embarrassing to me." I said. "Well don't feel bad the girl I was supposed to be with left me for somebody else." He said bitterly. "Wait, the girl you were supposed to be with? What does that mean?" I asked.
"Oh just you know when you and a girl like each other and you're going to date one day....She left me for somebody else." I gaped at him. "She left you? For somebody else? Why? You're so nice!" I said. "Yea because all guys want to be nice." Jacob said rolling his eyes. "Sorry, it's not a bad thing. I like nice." I shrugged. "Well thanks." He said. "Was the other guy nicer than you?" I asked. He laughed. "What is it with you and nice guys?" He asked. "I don't know I guess after Kyle I like nice guys." I shrugged. "Maybe I've always liked nice guys. Maybe I thought he was nice?" I shrugged. "Okay, well yea I guess he was nice. He and her had a lot in common. He's from the amazon though...so that's going to be an adjustment." He said trailing off.
"I don't think I've ever thought about anybody being from the amazon. What would he be called... Root the Amazonian warier!?" I said trying to lighten the mood. Not for him, for me. I was freaking out about my mother. The ambulance driver had told me she was going to be okay. She was stable and breathing. But I knew anything could happen and I needed her to be okay. He chuckled. "Not quite his name was Nahuel." He said. "Oh, well then." I said. "I'm sorry to hear about you and...whatever her name was." "Renesmee." He said. "Right, odd name." I said. "Yea I guess it is unique." He said. "And I'm sorry to hear about you and Kyle." He said. "Well I'm told it's his loss." I shrugged.
"Yea it is." He agreed. "And I know you don't want to hear this. But it's Renesmee's loss to." I said. "How you figure?" He asked. "Because I see what a great person you are. And you should never want anybody in your life that doesn't wanna be there 100%" I said. He thought about it. "You're right, if I ever loved her at all I should want her to be happy. And I do of course, want her to be happy. I guess it just stings a little bit because I was there for her and then as soon as she didn't need me anymore she just left. And wanted to pretend like we'd still be friends. I don't even know how that works!" He said getting upset.
"Me either, I've never understood how people break up and still remain friends. I mean I get it. The theory is great. You were once super close friends and you should realistically still be friends afterwards. But I think there are so many hurt feelings going on that it's to hard to remain friends." I said. He nodded. "Exactly. And it's tough her family and I were friends and it was weird but then she...well I don't even know how to explain it." He said. I put a hand up. "I understand." I said.
"I'm gonna call the hospital and see if my mom is in a room." I said. I searched for a number and asked patient records about her. They connected me to her room. "Hello?" She asked groggily. "Mom! You're awake!" I said. "Well yea, you can't kill this old bat!" She said. "Mom I was so worried about you, tell me what happened!" I said. "Well that old boyfriend of yours showed up, I never did like him anyways." She said. "Yea me either. Mom I am so sorry! If I had known he was going to do that I wouldn't of left." I said. "Rather me than you darlin, seems like he was lookin for you. He kept demanding I tell him where you were. Course I wouldn't he got my phone and kept trying to knock me down. He roughed me up a little bit but all in all I'm okay." She said.
"I'm heading home right now to see you." I said. "Is that a good idea?" She asked. "Well I don't know! I just need to see you and make sure you're okay!" I said. "Oh you I'm just fine. You worry to much, I'm supposed to be the one worried about you." I sighed. "I know but this is bad." I said. "I think you should stay there." She said after a minute. "Not even! I'm the reason you're in this mess in the first place. Besides I'm almost there." I said. "Alright, just be careful Kyle ran off and I don't know where he is." She said. "He'd better hope he don't run into me!" I said angrily. "Darlin keep your cool." She said. "I don't know if I can he's gone to far this time!" I said.
"I know that but getting angry isn't going to help or fix anything." "Fine, I'll see you in a few hours." I said. "Okay, drive safe." She said. "Okay I will." I said hanging up. I didn't tell her about Jacob but she'd meet him soon enough. "You okay?" He asked. "I will be, maybe, no...I don't know. She said she doesn't know where Kyle is." I said. "He'd better hope I don't get my hands on him. I'm glad you let me come with you." He said. "Me too." I agreed. He didn't know why I was going home before he offered but that's why I didn't put up a fight.
"Well as long as were back for work Monday this should go smoothly." I said. "Yea." He nodded. We started to pull into Port Angeles and noticed all the cars. What is going on? I wondered. Then I saw the convention center packed with cars as well. Great, it would be easy for Kyle to hide with all these people but I was still keeping my eyes peeled. He wouldn't get past me.
I directed him to where the hospital was and he pulled in. "Ready for this?" He asked. "As ready as I can be, let's go." We got out of the car and headed inside. "Hey, let's stop in here and get your mom some flowers." He suggested. "That's actually really sweet." I said. We picked out a beautiful bouquet and headed to my mom's room.
When I walked in and saw her I immediately broke down. She was asleep and didn't realize we were here. Jacob wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to him. "Hey, it's okay." He said. I cried into his shirt. I couldn't even register how good he smelled or how comforting his strong arms where. All I could see where images of Kyle flashing through my head. If I found him i was going to kill him! He ran a soothing hand down my back. "It's okay. Shh...hey it's okay." He said.
I pulled myself together as much as I could. "I'm sorry." I said wiping at my now blotchy face. "You're fine, you okay now?" He asked. "I don't know, my mom looks so hurt." I said wiping at the tears again. He sat the flowers on the table and I walked to the edge of the bed taking a seat. Jacob stood back giving us some space. My mom stirred waking abruptly. "Meg?" She asked groggily. "Yea mom it's me." I said.
"Who's the guy? He's cute." My mom noted quietly. "He's the new roommate." I said. "Oh." She said giving me a knowing smile. "We brought you these flowers." I said. "Oh thank you honey, they are beautiful." She said admiring them. "Are you okay?" I asked. "Oh goodness it looks worse than it is." She said waving me off. I waved Jacob over. "Mom this is Jake, uh Jacob...and Jake this is my mom." I said. "Nice to meet you." He said. "You to, thank you so much for taking care of my baby girl. She means the world to me." My mom said.
"Anytime, I was happy to do it. You know I like her myself." He said. "Ah yes, she's good." My mom said letting out a yawn. "Well how much longer do you have to stay here?" I asked. "Oh I'll be going home tonight." She said. "Do you want us to come stay with you?" I asked. "Well I asked your uncle Dom to come stay with me for a while. He was here earlier." Oh. "So if you wanna stay you'll have to book a hotel." She said. "But you do that and come by in the morning and I'll cook you a big breakfast." She said. "Are you sure you're feeling up to it?" I asked. "Well yes of course!" She said.
So we hung out with my mom until she was discharged a few hours later. Then we picked up dinner and followed her back to her house. We sat around the table catching up. We didn't talk about Kyle. My mom kept thanking Jacob and telling him how glad she was he was living with me. I know it was so he'd feel obligated to take care of me. Or to look out for me. He assured her that he would.
When the sun had gone down we decided to head to the hotel. But every one of them looked packed, and they were. We stopped at every single hotel. With three left the guy at the front said the same thing. "Were all booked up for this trade show I'm so sorry, but I can give you the honey moon suite." He noted looking at the computer. Well we were desperate it was getting late.
"That's fine." I said taking the two keys from the guy at the counter. We headed up the stairs to the room.
