blurry
The week went by in a blur. Carly was constantly peppering me with questions about Jacob at first. But towards the week it died down. Which was hard because he was coming into the diner a few days a week. When Carly asked him about it he simply shrugged and said, "I can't cook." And he was right, he couldn't.
"This is my last dig I swear, but if you wanted to trade uniforms now I would. Might help my chances." "Of getting made fun of. Do you know how much fun he pokes at this thing?" I asked. She laughed. "Silly girl, if he's making constant comments about it, it's because he can't stop thinking about it. IF you know what I'm sayin..." I didn't. "Uh like as in a joke that will just never stop being funny?" I asked. "No babe, as in...you know when we get the lunch rush and all those construction workers come in on and off? Well they always wanna wait for you to serve them." She hedged. "Oh, no I think you're wrong about him." I said. "Look he may not be over whoever broke his heart but he's a guy and he's certainly not blind he's noticed. Just think about it. Besides he swears he comes in here because he can't cook but I've seen the way he looks at you." She said.
Now it was my turn to laugh out loud. "Yea right." I said. I could read people it was one of my many talents and he was hurt. He didn't like me. "Look I'm not saying he likes you silly just that he likes what he sees." She said. Well I guess that's flattering because everyone constantly noticed how cute Jacob was. Oh well I wouldn't need to worry about that. It was time for my break. I took a seat across from Jacob before the lunch rush started. He was scribbling something down in his notebook which I often saw him doing.
"Whatcha working on?" I asked. "Eh it's nothing." More secrets. "Just wait until we play 20 questions again, it's coming up." I joked. He rolled his eyes. "Nothing yet, it might be soon I just need to keep thinking about it." He shrugged it off as no big deal. "Okay then." I smiled. "What happened to your dad?" He asked. "Oh, uh well he died when I was ten of a heart attack. We just didn't know you know?" I said. "Yea, that I get." He sighed. "Your mom?" I asked. "Died when I was nine, she got a in a car accident. My sisters left. They are much older than me." He said. "Sisters? Wait I thought you only had brothers?" I asked.
"Oh well they aren't biological like my sisters Rachel and Rebecca." He said. "Twins?" I asked. "Yea, good guess." He nodded. "They helped practically raise me but as soon as they could they left. It's tough with them gone." He said. "I'm so sorry about that." "It's fine I stayed to help with my dad so I feel guilty about leaving some days." "Your dad, I'm sure he's healed some since then." "Yes but I mean, He's in a wheelchair." He clarified. "Oh, gotcha." I nodded. "I don't know if he really needs my help or I just told myself that. He gets around fine." He blew out a breath. "How did he end up in a wheelchair or was he always that way?" I asked. "Oh no it was his diabetes, it caused him to lose mobility." He said. "You know you're taking all the questions." He said raising an eye brow.
"Shoot I'm bad about that, sorry." "No worries." He grinned. "You have no siblings?" He asked. "No, just me." I said putting my hands out. "Do you ever wish you had one?" He asked. "See I'd go back and forth. Somedays I'd get so bored I'd do just about anything to have a play mate built in. But then other days I got spoiled and didn't have to share." I shrugged. "Where did your sisters end up?" I asked. "Rachel got a scholarship to Washington State University and went away to school, and Rebecca got married and moved to Hawaii." He said. "Wow now that's far." I said. "Yea, but it's all good. Rachel came back home after school she's actually dating one of my friends ah brothers Paul." He said. "Well ha if it works out he really will be your brother." I said. "Yea I guess so." He nodded.
"So is being roommates with a girl everything terrible or not so bad?" I asked. "Hey you're going again." He said. "I know." I smiled. He rolled his eyes giving me a half a smile. "You know being roommates with you isn't terrible. And it's nice to have a friend." I understood what he meant. I mean sure Carly was a friend. But it was different with him, we worked together if I stopped working here I don't know that we'd continue to hang out after this. But with him we were getting closer every day. I knew way more about him than I did Carly but we didn't have a ton of time to talk her and I.
"Well I'd better get going, the lunch rush is coming soon." Jacob said standing up. He put some money on the table for his food and got up. "Sounds good, see you at home." I said waving. When work was over I went home in the mood for a big pot of spaghetti. I made my sauce from scratch and I had the urge to put a big pot on simmer till it smelled up the house. I threw in some garlic bread and before I knew it the house was smelling all kinds of good.
Jacob came out of his room. "Whatever that is smells delicious!" He said coming over to look in the pot. "Spaghetti." I said taking out the garlic bread. I put some noodles in the bowls and added the sauce. He took a seat. "See this is why I like being your roommate. I can't cook and you know exactly what your doing." He said. After I had finished cleaning the dishes I put the leftovers in the fridge. My phone dinged with a text. Please don't be Bo asking me to work the weekend! I enjoyed my weekends off.
It was from my mom. It said "Check: Not okay." Then another one pinged. "You made the mistake of leaving me now your mom will pay." It was Kyle. I mean who else could it have been? I gasped. So much for thinking I could run away from my past. "Don't you touch her Kyle if you wanted me to stay maybe you should have treated me better!!" I said. I turned around in circles. "I have to go." I said. "What? Go where? What's wrong?" Jacob asked surprised by my sudden outburst. "You don't look good." He noted trying to calm me down. "No, I'm not it's my mom...I have to go!" I said. "You can't go! You're in no position to drive. Why don't you let me." He said. "Oh...okay." I handed him my keys and ran out to the car. I ran back inside. "Wait I need to pack a bag." I said as Jacob went to pack himself a bag.
