Chapter 1
Why does it feel like everybody could get into a relationship so easily?
Snow doubted herself on this sensitive matter just as her will wavered every time. It's the one question which had likely come to her mind more frequently than she'd like to admit.
If there was one thing she's having trouble with, it's getting into a relationship with a guy. Although it was nothing to be ashamed of — being still single and taking her time — she questioned herself when it would be her turn.
Just because one couple made their entrance on campus, she couldn't stare away. Something about it put her in a moment of a wishing fairy tale. They were holding hands, smiling at one another, and the guy just gave the girl a light peck on the cheek.
She stood staring, and a little bit of impatience rose whenever she saw this kind of situation. It wasn't fair for her, yet the torture was getting to her.
Each kind of couple she noticed was having their own relationship and in ways of acting all cute in front of their significant other. Whether it's disgusting or endearing, she hadn't experienced any of that; she'd so wished she would have.
A part of her wasn't bothered since she wouldn't mind waiting for someone magnificent, and that could be all worth it when she had found somebody. But, another part of her made her feel less loved than others, and she worried about spending her life alone.
She was eighteen. She had time and years until a good, decent person presented himself to her. It wasn't like she was ugly. She had natural beauty, a face which resembled a young, innocent puppy, at least it's what her parents and friends said to her.
Still, it wasn't like she couldn't help herself from desiring for something. If Snow could get rid of whatever strange feeling of how it'd feel to be single and of her yearning to belong to someone else, she might not be thinking this way.
"Look away and fix your shoulders. They're slouching," Kyle pointed out to her.
"Agreed. Stop gawking. They're sick." Malloy had just crossed his arms, showing disgust on his face.
They just knew when to cue in, her two guy friends whom she had grown accustomed to since high school. They had her back and supported her for almost everything. She knew they mean well and everything they say had truth in it. While she heard them, she couldn't just stop herself from wondering.
You would think that maybe you know more about guys just because your friends were dudes, but even she couldn't decipher them no matter how long she knew them. Guys were just weird.
Snow turned to face them as an exaggerated expression appeared on her face. "Oh come on."
"Why do you care?" Kyle scrunched his eyebrows.
"Well..." She tried thinking of how to answer him. "I don't know. I'm honestly a bit jealous."
"You have nothing to be jealous about," Kyle said.
Malloy nodded. "He's right. You shouldn't worry about that now."
Snow thought it was easy for them to say. They're practically not in the mood for a relationship. Malloy had experienced in two relationships before and Kyle had at least been on one date. On the other hand, with her, she had never been anywhere with guys.
"Don't think about this," Kyle said as if he knew that she was going on with deep thoughts.
"I'm not." Snow acted in denial.
Kyle raised his brow. He was finding the accusation in her suspicious high pitched tone whenever she tried to contradict them. When she had enough of Kyle's stare, Snow uttered under her breath, "Okay."
"Oh, there you are," Malloy said with his head turned. Someone approached with heavy steps.
"Hey," he said, quickly giving him a nod.
Snow's eyes made her way onto him, Malloy's new friend. Malloy had the same class as him, and they connected not too long ago. When Malloy took a liking to him, he told Kyle, and he soon liked him too. Well, it was just recently he had been around more often, and she was fairly okay with it.
His name was Casey.
As far as she knew Casey, he was all right. She gripped her personality from high school when she was timid with strangers. Her bright and cheery self only revealed when she was comfortable around those who stuck with her like Kyle and Malloy. Around those two, she didn't have to be awkward, and she easily could show compassion.
It was just the three friends who had each other like the three musketeers. Now adding Casey into the group, Snow didn't know how to react to him.
Casey appeared calm, cool and collected. He was tall and mysterious. The way that he looked was an average guy with dark brown hair and side swept bangs on the front. So far, that she had seen of his wardrobe consisted of dark-colored clothes. Today he wore a simple dark navy t-shirt with a blue casual jacket and black jeans. His shoes matched with his jeans.
Snow watched the interaction between them.
"You just got out of class?" Malloy asked, and Casey nodded.
"Yeah."
"How was it?"
"It sucks," Casey said with a straight face.
"At least you made it," Kyle joked.
The guys made small chit-chat around each other, and as Snow glanced between all of them, she thought that maybe she should say something, so she stepped in and greeted Casey politely. "Hi, welcome."
Snow thought about how she was a tad awkward with her tone just now but figured it was appropriate.
His gaze shifted to her. "Thanks," Casey said quietly.
She lowered her head and nodded.
"Ahhhhummm." Kyle cleared his throat. "Let's all get lunch while we're here."
They headed towards the cafeteria and shortly, were greeted by the interior design of Hampshire Gray wall color and the Cyan Blue horizontal wall stripe design. Plenty of seats dispersed all over within the view of many other students. Some had meals in their tray and others work on an assignment from class on their laptops, or even both simultaneously.
Most of the food here was better than what she had to eat in high school. Filling up the last portion of her tray, Snow gave the cashier her student id so the lady could swipe and confirm. Once she was accepted, she headed over with the guys to one of the rows of seats of the long counter table.
As they sat down on the black, long metal stools, and from the opposite of them, they could see out through the glass, transparent window of their homely main campus.
The campus college of Palm Valley University, of where they walk grounds on; home of the warm, sunny, and humid state of Florida as days were very long and readied of the glorious sunshine.
Snow saw how the guys were already digging into their meal. Starving, like they wouldn't want to wait for any more than they have to.
"I'm going to go grab something to drink, I'll be back," she announced.
She stood up from her seat and walked nearby where the vending machine was with a mini wallet in her hand. She placed in a dollar and fifty cents but wasn't sure what she wanted to get, but she liked to have something sugary.
There were all these different choices of soda that she could choose from, and she thought about what flavor she cares for at this moment. Thus, having to stare at the glass for a while.
"Are you done picking?"
Snow's eyes flickered when she saw Casey there with his arm leaning against the wall near the machine.
"What are you doing?" she asked, startled.
"I want a drink too," Casey said dryly.
"Oh. Well, I'm choosing right now." She turned her eyes back to the display chamber.
She liked to take her time with things and decide carefully before making a choice. Her finger hovered a few inches away from the selection.
She guided it around as if she were monitoring where it went until one of the choices would click to her like a bright light bulb. As she did so, she took a quick peek to her right with Casey still there probably in his mind, waiting for her to pick something out by now.
It's not like Snow could read minds, but that's what it looked like for him, and because she didn't want him to grow impatient, she looked back at the machine and clicked on the button for Coca-Cola.
After a few seconds of hearing the noise whirring, the solid metal thud made its sound, and Snow went to the bottom of the port to take the soda.
She stepped aside after retrieving so that Casey could have his turn.
Casey moved to the front of the display, scanned over in not less than fifteen seconds, and made his selection, which was a Dasani Cold Water.
She watched him bent down to pick up his water bottle. There were other vending machines with cold water bottles.
He didn't mind her, as he already was going back to the table and she followed behind him.
"Hey," Malloy said when he saw them coming back.
Casey opened the cap to his bottle before gulping of it as he sat down. Snow munched one of her French fries, which tasted with salt and looked at Kyle and Malloy, staring at Kyle's phone.
"Wanna play?" Kyle asked Snow.
"What is it?" she asked curiously.
Kyle moved his phone closer for Snow to see better. "It's a quiz online. You should take it."
When she got a better view of the screen, it showed up in black letters bolded in print, and the title read Which Kind Of Crush Are You Meant For?
Snow glanced at Kyle with an eyebrow raised at him. "You've been playing that?"
"No, not this one. I stumbled across this one and thought it's perfect for you," Kyle said, and with Malloy next to him, he looked like he knew too.
"It couldn't be more true," Malloy said, giving Snow a pitiful look.
Snow raised a hand to her chest, and her mouth hung open. Had she really been despairing that much? "I beg to differ."
"Do you want to take it or not?" Kyle asked.
"Why not?" she said. It was just a fun game. Kyle lent her his phone. She scrolled down to where the questions there were waiting for her to answer.
The first question appeared, and Snow read out loud. "Your crush knows he's going to see you today, so before he leaves his house, he: A. Make sure his breath smells good. B. Spray on cologne. C. Dress in your favorite color. Or D. Style up his hair differently."
That was easy. She liked it when a guy has fresh breath. A guy with bad breath was a No on her part. If she was talking to him, she wanted to get close to him without an odor.
"A is the best choice. I want him to smell minty and fresh." She clicked on A.
"Your crush spot you talking with your buds by a bunch of lockers. He decides to: A. Go over and say, "Hi!" B. Grin and wave. C. Continue to stare at you. or D. Walk away before you notice him," she read the second question.
A guy who wouldn't mind letting her know he's here, she thought it'd be cute, but it was even cuter if she could see his smile, so she picked B in this scenario.
"Third question. Which compliment would you rather hear from your crush? A. You're so fun! B. You're so sweet! C. You're so cute! D. You're so funny!"
"I would love to hear a girl called me cute," Kyle said.
"I prefer funny," Malloy said. "I would like to hear a girl's laugh."
Snow smiled. "I want to have fun with a guy and if we could have fun together, I think I want him to compliment how fun the day is and that he has fun with me, so I'm going with A." She clicked instantly.
"Which of these hotties would be your prince charming? A. Josh Hutcherson B. Liam Hemsworth C. Zac Efron D. Cole Sprouse."
"Why is Cole Sprouse getting the popular trend lately? He's been around since Zack and Cody." Kyle threw a questioning look at Malloy.
"Because girls think having dark humor, apathetic feelings, and being a loner is like a mysterious profile of a bad boy," Malloy mouthed off. "I watched Riverdale. He just had a rough past."
"I need myself a Liam Hemsworth," Snow said, ignoring them and picking B.
She almost thought that he was talking about Casey with the description he gave but it didn't seem like he had dark humor or apathetic feelings, but he was a little mysterious to her.
Moving on, she was on the next question. "Which one of these things would you notice first in a guy? A. Eyes. B. Hair. C. Smile. D. Muscles. It's definitely Smile. I like it if a guy smiles."
Snow continued quietly throughout the quiz and answered them with the kind of answers that applied to her. Once she hit submit, the result took a few seconds to load before it showed up.
"Whatcha got?" Kyle asked.
Snow glanced at the screen. "The Sweet Boy Next Door. You want a guy who knows how to woo you over with his generosity and kindness. He will always say hello when he sees you and open the door for you. There's no doubt that whenever he smiles, you will melt, and it will get you thinking in your daydreams. He's not only cute, but he knows how to take care of a girl whenever you need him."
She awed at her result. "I thought I might get like a fun, adventurous guy who will rock my world and someone dashing, but this works too!"
"No surprise," Malloy said, and then he looked at Casey. Snow and Kyle as well since he had been quiet.
"How's it going?" Kyle asked, blinking.
"Going great, I'm almost finished with my lunch," Casey said and chewed on his Chicken Nuggets.
"Whatcha doing later?" Malloy asked.
Snow gave Kyle back his phone as Casey said, "I might just hang with my girlfriend later."
Her eyes widened and looked back at Casey. What now? She incredulously couldn't believe it. He hadn't mentioned he had a girlfriend, at least not when she was around.
"Oh cool," Malloy said nonchalantly. "What are you guys going to do?"
"Probably watching series," Casey said, and Snow sat there unknowingly.
From first glance, she wouldn't have thought he could be capable of having someone. It was shocking to her.
While the guys chatted with him, she picked up her soda can to drink.
❥
After Snow finished all her classes and ended the day at University at 2:30 pm, Kyle dropped her off at her house.
Both parents had work. Her mom worked morning and afternoon shifts, and her dad worked many hours until the evening. Luckily, her mom could drop her off in the morning. Snow didn't have a license to drive yet. She had a permit, but no time for someone to teach her how.
Snow obtained a red softcover book from her shelf and sat down on her bed. Flipped open to where the bookmark had confined, she registered the fact that there were the last few chapters left until the ending.
She wasn't prepared for the climax but dived right into the pages.
The main character, Melany, gazed at the flowers while she stood at the flower shop. Normally the flowers would be her remedy to a smile on her face, but she couldn't bring it. Thinking how Austin might look happier with another girl generated wistful thoughts. She was trapped with her feelings and how she didn't find the right timing to confess to him.
But her friend knew where to find Melany and drove her with reasons why she should tell him. Her friend saw Austin and overheard something when he was talking with his friend. She encouraged how Melany still have a chance to run up and confess. Melany was dubious, but her friend gave a hard smack to convince her.
She's running. She's running. Snow read the description of where Melany picked up the full pace and ran as fast as she could.
She kept reading, and the moment where Melany arrived at the place Austin was at, she was absorbed with what was coming next. Sensing a romance would be burning.
Melany confessed, with her rambling used as a clumsy confession. It led to that big moment where Snow finally had been waiting for: a kiss! The kiss fueled passionately, thrillingly, and beautifully.
Snow lightly grinned and continued reading what's left of the book. When it came to an end, she shut the book and set it aside.
That was beautiful. The story touched her heart, all packed with light and cute romance. She was a sucker for romance.
As she went from joyful to suddenly empty, reality slapped her. She had no one.
How come no guy wants to like her as much as she'd like him? A few possibilities could be: She hadn't met anybody, she was terrible at talking to guys, and no guys put in the effort.
Casey came amidst in her thinking. He's a guy, and she honestly hadn't had a chance to know him but recalled earlier how he had a girlfriend. What did he have that she didn't?
Her lack of confidence was her insecurity. Here she was reminded that maybe she wasn't a guy's type or there was something wrong. It was embarrassing that she let herself think about these thoughts, but Snow couldn't wash them away.
They resurfaced no matter how far she pushed them back.
Snow ran her fingers through her brown golden bronze hair and slid her body down until she was laying. Her deep brown eyes shut in frustration at the same time she let out a sigh.
She couldn't tell if anything went wrong with her.
