The Games of Old
Most of our parents did not have an extensive video game catalog. The first video game came out in the 1970's so there was a limited variety for quite some time. However, their generation of games would become the backbone for the video gaming industry. Some of them are on the computer, some are on the TV. I was not quite a video game person, but I know there were definitely some games that little me could not get enough of! So I decided to put some of them down below by console rather than date. If you want to list a childhood game you guys played, let me know. These are just a small handful of my personal favorites:
THE N64:
Yoshi's Story
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
This is probably one of the earliest video games I played. And honestly the only one I remember and STILL HAVE!!! Shockingly! I feel like I might have had a Mario game because I remember a game with lava and rising water as a 2 year old, but it's too far back in my memory to remember all that well. I do remember playing this game a lot, even in my older years. I used to struggle to get past the first level because I was so scared of dying. I used to just hand the controls over to my mom and watch her play the game. If mom wasn't around and a Yoshi died, I immediately turned the game off and on so I could play with all six Yoshis. The Game Over music used to terrify me. I didn't actually finish the game by myself until I was almost 20! Kind of a long time, but I somehow managed to do it. Of course I also played all the "easy" levels while my mom did all the hard ones. And by hard ones I mean that fish level. HOW DO YOU EVEN BEAT THAT GAME WITH A GIANT FISH LEAPING OUT OF THE WATER TO EAT YOU?! I'M JUST A BABY YOSHI! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!! Some of the levels still give me anxiety, but it's more because I'm trying to beat the levels that always killed me and I HATE them!!!!! (Also, my mom used to just collect all the melons...how she did it I don't know. I don't have that kind of life span in a video game).
CD ROM:
A Bug's Life

I won't lie; I always forget how bad some of these graphics used to be for some of these games. Even ones I played just a few years ago. This game I had when I was about 7, and it's a game I no longer have because unaware little me STEPPED ON IT AND BROKE IT!!!! Oh well. I remember replaying a lot of the levels over and over because I thought the interactions were hilarious. Like the moth in the city, and the circus act scene. It was kind of funny watching everyone falling over until you put them in the correct spot.
Frogger 2

I was very obsessed with this game as a kid. It was, and still is, my favorite CD Rom game. Unfortunately I no longer have it since CD Roms are outdated. But I was always asking my parents if I could get on the computer so I could play it. Except for that haunted house scene. The creepy ghost ghoul dude whoever would always chase you around the room in one part and I was so scared of it that I had my dad do the level for me. I never did get to play that level on my own......
Jumpstart Phonics
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I still remember this game, mostly the songs, but this was a game I played a lot as a kid. It's also probably how I learned my phonetics letters and sounds. Even when I was well into school I still loved this game. The firehouse one was my favorite. And then the cuckoo clock song was my favorite to listen to.
Jumpstart Kindergarten

Sometimes I think back on all the old games I used to play as a kid and wonder what on earth was so entertaining that I kept occupied with it for hours. Especially with those graphics! Of course the first thing was that, as a kid, these kind of games were much harder to play with my limited knowledge of math and hand-eye-coordination. With that said, I loved clicking on the calendar, listening to the songs, playing with the Russian Dolls, and going outside every two seconds and watching all the kids eat lunch. It was great!
Pocahontas Interactive Storybook game

I liked the music in this game when the kids are playing instruments. I actually forgot these games were storybooks because I remember having so much fun clicking on everyone and watching them interact. There's a part where Governor Radcliffe is like, "Dispose of this," after taking two bites of food and I used to imitate him eating food all the time!
Chutes and Ladders

I used to play with all the girl characters and give them all the colors. That's the one thing I remember about this game. That and I had trouble figuring out the direction of the board game, so I always clicked on the wrong space. XD.
Finding Nemo

I have no idea what year this game is supposed to be. I think 2003, but this is the only video I found that contained the games I remember. Anyway, I remember knocking all the baby turtles out of the current on purpose because I thought I was taking them with me and I was super obsessed with babies at the time. I didn't play it a ton, but it was a game I remember liking and taking turns with other people.
Barbie Horse Adventure: Mystery Ride
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I used to get into fights over this game with my friend because she didn't want me to have her horse nor name it a name she liked. And we always fought over who got to play first because that's how much we loved this game. A bit silly for little kids, perhaps, but I learned to share my players the older I got. The graphics are really aged and the puzzles are a bit simple, but to my small eight year old self, this game was my perfect skill level and I loved it!
Disney princess horse show game

The dressing up part was easy. However, the horse riding part was hard. I always got stuck trying to get passed the hurdles! I loved the princesses in it though. That was one of my favorite aspects of the game.
101 Dalmatians Interactive Storybook Game
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I had so many things that I loved to do in this game: scrubbing people with a sponge, loading up the truck with sooty dalmatian dogs, feeding Pongo, and of course, listening to the part where you get to split between dog and human voice and the one dog is like, "Sweet love of miiiiiiine, pleeeeeeeaase be miiiiiiiine! I love you sooooooooooo, sweet love of miiiiiiiiine!" And the other dog was like, "CAN'T HE TAKE A HINT???!!!!!" XD
Tarzan Interactive Game
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I loved the sticker book part of the game, and I never tried to get past level 8 of the chameleon ping-pong game because I was scared of hitting Kerchek. (I was an easily spooked little kid now that I think about it). The Tarzan's Jungle Tumble really got me though. I COULD NEVER GET PAST TARZAN'S CHILDHOOD! It wasn't until recently when looking up the game that I finally saw what the final six levels were! Which is interesting because I once dreamed of the final level and what it was like, and it was pretty similar, minus Clayton trying to SHOOT Tarzan. But I digress.
PLAYSTATION 2:
The Incredibles
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
My family tried out the Playstation 2 when I was about 8 or 9. Unfortunately it didn't work too well, so we didn't keep it. But this was the first and only game I remember being played. I remember watching my dad play some of the game and then asking if I could play, but then later I found out that they had taken the game back. So I never got the chance to play. But I still remember this game clear as a bell.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
Once the PlayStations had all the glitches worked out, we started getting more games and this one was one of my favorites! It was simultaneously the most fun and most difficult game I have ever played! Everything is all smooth and reasonably difficult until you get to the peppermint candy shooting level. I DIED SO MANY TIMES THAT I GOT FRUSTRATED AND DIDN'T PLAY THE GAME FOR DAYS!!!!! I eventually beat it, but it took forever!!!!!!! My goodness!!!!!!
Barbie 12 Dancing Princesses
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
This was a game I loved and played constantly, even when I got into high school! There's just something so fun about this game. Maybe it's collecting everyone, and the gems, and keys.....or designing the dances and fireworks show..... The loading screen takes a while, but I don't mind. I don't own a PlayStation anymore since it broke, so that's sad. I miss this game a lot.
Shrek Smash and Crash
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
I played this game with my friends constantly! I used to be a pretty competitive person, but I found out how much more fun it is to work together to beat the other players and the two of us take turns being first and second place. It was great. And the arena was fun too, though I always fell for traps. I liked being either Goldilocks or Red Riding hood. Maybe Fiona, but I liked the little kids better. Plus you get to whack people on the head with spoons and picnic baskets! How much fun is THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Lego Star Wars
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
Lego games are a ton of fun! We had the three prequel stories: The Phantom Menace, Clone Wars, and Revenge of the Sith. They were a ton of fun, though I kept getting blasted to pieces all the time! I don't know what it is with Lego games that make them so fun...maybe the noises...maybe how they build everything at lightning speeds...maybe how they just make these funny little noises and grunts because they're Legos and can't talk....I don't know, but I loved them!!!!!
And that's it. There's definitely more games I'm sure I played as a kid, but I either can't remember what they're called or they're just gone from my memory. Or they're games I consider more a part of my older years rather than my childhood. What kind of games did you guys have as kids? Or perhaps some of you are young kids and the tech I consider as part of my adult years will become part of your childhood looking back? Let me know! I'm very curious!
