#1. Echoes of Friendship

She's sitting on the swing in the garden. Her eyes are teary and she seems a little upset. She's a five-year-old girl and she's murmuring something to herself. It seems that she's lonely, so it's obvious for her to sit and cry if someone shouts at her. She has a sensitive soul. Her trance is broken when the swing is pushed forward. Oh! Someone has come up to console her. She smiles when she sees that it's her friend. It's a boy of her age; he smiles at her.

He gives the swing another push and then moves in front to look at the girl. She stops the swing and asks him to sit on it. He obliges, and she extends a grateful glance towards him.

"Thank you!" she says.

"For what? For letting you swing? That's what I am supposed to do." He smiles at her.

"No, for coming to look for me. Mumma is angry with me; she didn't come to check on me. So, thank you for coming," the girl replies innocently.

"I saw you alone, so I am here. How can I leave my best friend alone?" he replies in the same tone, and it makes her smile.

The girl and the boy are best friends. He is a year older than her. These two are inseparable souls, as their mothers tag them. She might not listen to her mother, but she listens to her best friend, and vice versa.

The bond that they share is pure and beautiful, and their parents are in awe of the relationship that the two kids share. It's unusual to find such a kind of bonding between small children, but these two are different. Their parents are proud of them and hope that these two will remain the same as they are at the moment.

The little girl looks at him, holds his hand in hers, and gives it a light squeeze. She then smiles at him, and it seems that she's contemplating a lot before speaking.

"You need to promise me something." She looks at him.

"What is it? I will make a promise, but only if I can do it. Mumma says we must not make a promise just for the sake of it; we must try to abide by the promise," he says, sensing that she may ask something that he might not fulfill.

"You promise me that you will always be by my side. I know we might not be together, but you will always support me." She looks at him intently, knowing that he will keep his word.

"We will be together. No one will be able to take us away. I promise, I will be with you forever." He says this while placing his other hand on hers.

"Yes, we will do something together, just like Papa and Uncle do." She says this, and he agrees with her.

She smiles brightly and then hugs him. The two remain in the hug for a long time until they hear their mothers calling for them, and then they head inside the house.

His trance is broken by a voice. He looks towards the source of the voice and finds her talking on the phone. She's scolding someone for not doing the work given to them. He sighs deeply.

The sweet memory of the past turns bitter in an instant. He can't believe that his friend has changed so much. She has always been a gentle soul, but right now, what he's seeing in front of his eyes is something that he doesn't want to believe. He wants to believe that this is a dream and once he wakes up, things will be fine. She'd be a better version of what she was in her childhood.

He's unable to believe that she has changed so much that she doesn't even acknowledge the little things that he does for her. She doesn't believe that little things matter a lot. She's the little girl from his memory, but she's not the same soul.

Her sharp voice brings him out of his trance for the second time. She's still annoyed—ah! She gets annoyed so easily! Well, this is unlike her; she used to be a fun-loving girl while he'd be the one to get annoyed, but now the roles have changed.

"That's not for me to think. For what purpose do you think you're here? I need that tender and I want it, by hook or by crook. It's up to you."

"No, I am not here to listen to your explanations. I can see the profits that this deal can bring us. I want the file ready on my table before I reach the office. Did you get it?" she asks the caller, and after getting a satisfactory answer, she cuts the call.

"What? Don't stare at me! I did the right thing. Unless you shout at them, they won't prioritize work. They only need money without any work." She gazes at him as he sends a questioning look her way.

She's Ruhana Bisht, a businesswoman by profession. She's outspoken, fierce, bold, and money-minded as well. She's very passionate about the work she has done and the business that she has built out of her hard work. She's the girl he's been thinking about.

And he's Vineet Shergill; he's a businessman too, but he misses his best friend. Ruhana is not the same girl he's been thinking about. She asked him to be by her side, but now she has turned away from him. He sighs deeply and asks her to calm down and have some coffee. Vineet asks her to think calmly and then take any decision. But she denies it straight away.

"No, it's necessary, Vineet. These guys don't work properly unless I shout at them. Huh, I already made it clear about that tender, but he has not filled it yet. I just feel like firing him, but I cannot." She shows her displeasure towards the working nature of her manager and employees. He passes her a cup of coffee.

"Have some coffee, Ruhana. It will help you relax your mind. And don't run behind anything. If it's meant for you, it will come to you." He states his view calmly.

"I don't agree, Vineet. You know what? We have to run behind money and love. Otherwise, people can push you away. If you stay true, you'll not get what you deserve. Because you're not given what you deserve, you have to snatch it." She says, and it seems like she's hurt when she says things like this.

He disagrees with her, while she says something that leaves him baffled at the moment.
