Chapter 4: Family Feud
The sky begins to darken as the sun sets past the horizen. The Mistral forest is surprisingly silent, even with the chatters of birds and insects. With the broken moon and stars not yet illuminating the world below, the forest is left with a fog of darkness unchallenged. It's the perfect hiding place for a tribe of murderers and thieves to stalk their next prey unnoticed. Within the dense trees right outside of the village of Shion, a group of 30 to 35 bandits silently rush between the oaks and maples as they get closer and closer to the settlement.
As they are within one hundred feet of the outer walls, the entire group stop and quickly duck behind trees. Hiding. Waiting. Waiting for the order to invade. Attack. Steal. Kill. Everything that these people have lived to do. What they have done dozens of times and will do a dozen times more. What they hope to do. And soon, what will happen.
Among these three dozen bandits walks one. An individual who stands out among the savagely dressed tribe members. A woman that stands taller than most both figuratively and literally. She dawns a red and black kimono top with equally red spiked gauntlets. Covering her lady bits is a combination of a black short skirt and short shorts. Her absolute territory cuts halfway down her thigh due to black thigh highs, ending at her feet with black combat heels. Overall, it is a very eye-catching design to show that she is an important character.
Latched to her hip is a tricked out scabbard. Due to her previous employment, this sheath houses not just one sword. This large blocky box houses a rotary chamber that holds several different colored blades with varying effects. Very versatile, but having to replace a blade made out of solid Dust, let alone several, just sounds like a bitch and a half.
Finally, the most outstanding detail of this character is the white and red mask resembling a Grimm... What that Grimm is, I have no idea. It's hard to instill fear into your enemies with the faces of monsters when said face doesn't resemble any known Grimm. Looks cool, though. Anyway, this mask helps keep her pitch black hair out of her face as she looks on at the village with crimson eyes.
This bird of prey is named Raven Branwen, leader of the tribe and runner-up for the worst mother of the year.
She turns her head towards a nearby tribe member, Vernal. A stereotypically tomboy looking girl with ice-blue eyes staring back. Raven nods without a word. Returning the nod, the short brown haired girl walks out and faces the village wall. She closes her eyes and raises her arms out. At the same time, the tribe leader gingerly moves a finger. A trick she does not wish to pull on the rest of the tribe, but better safe than sorry. This causes the wind to whip around Vernal, strong enough to lift her off the ground by an inch. Not long after, a lightning bolt falls from the sky and strikes the wall.
It explodes into broken rubble, creating a sizable hole in the village's one useful defense. The bandits waste no more time hiding and rush towards the welcoming hole, like virgins in a brothel. With no hesitation, they go from silent stalkers to loud predators as they flood the streets of Shion. Whooping and hollering as they fire a few shots in the air. This display of showboating is greeted with... nothing.
Their murderous excitement soon dies down as they are met with empty streets and silent buildings. A lone truck can be spotted wedged in an alleyway. Raven and Vernal arrive quickly behind their fellow bandits with weapons at the ready, only to slow down with confusion. The leader walks further into the still village as she scans her eyes across the buildings, looking for any signs of life to rob.
Among the 30+ members of the Branwen tribe is one by the name of Shay D. Mann. A scraggly haired man with a very trustworthy smile while carrying a loaded revolver. That smile is now a straight horizontal slit as he, too, looks around with concern. Next to him is another member, a woman with a single bit of shoulder armor. Armed only with a machete.
Branwen1: I don't like this. There's usually some people who are still out at this hour.
Shay: Shh!
Shay continues walking as he tries looking for the inn. That task takes no time as he soon spots the building in question. One problem, however. The trucks he spied parking outside of the establishment yesterday are nowhere in sight. Maybe they finally moved on from Shion? No, it can't be. They didn't see the trucks leave the village, and one was spotted in an alley not long ago.
Oh, speaking of trucks, one can be seen parked around the corner of the inn. Shay sees the vehicle and signals the woman to check it out as he approaches the inn. The tribe woman silently jogs to the truck and reaches to the back of it. Looking around for any signs of movement, only seeing her fellow bandits, she grabs the nobs of the back doors and swing them open. Looking inside, she is only met with complete darkness further in with bits of red....... along with three guns pointed at her.
Xiong1: Hi there!
The sound of a shotgun blast tears through the night air as the woman's face is torn off from the shot, her body flying back and falling over dead.
The shot alerts the entire tribe, who are now jumping to the conclusion that this is a trap. Suddenly, the sound of several trucks revving to life echoes throughout the village, practically surrounding the stunned tribe. Shay spins around and spots his fellow tribe member dead on the ground, blood pooling around her mangled skull, and soon frantically aims his pistol all around as the sounds of roaring vehicles continue on, shifting his attention from the slightly opened inn door. Suddenly, a hand launches out and grabs the back of his shirt, violently pulling him into the building.
Shay is slammed onto the wooden floor, his grip on his pistol lost as it flies out of his hand. In a panic, he tries to get up, only to be met with a combat boot to the face. His head slams back down to the floor with an audible thud. Now unconscious, he lays still as the Huntsman stares down at him. With rifle in hand, he quickly turns his focus back to the door and rushes over. Hiding behind the wooden cover, he brings his rifle up and takes aim for the upcoming fight.
Now, in a panic, the rest of the Branwen tribe raise their weapons as they look for something to shoot. Some of them are taking pot shots at nearby buildings. Suddenly, the source of all the noise reveals themselves as several trucks, from alleyways and around the corners of buildings. Soon after, Raven snaps her head around at this display and realizes they are being trapped!
Then, without rhyme or reason, music starts blaring from an unknown source. At first, it was a simple guitar playing with drums, then followed with a bit of piano. Then, the vocals come in.
Stereo: 'OH, PARTY PARTY PARTY!
I WANNA HAVE A PARTY!
I NEED TO HAVE A PARTY!
YOU BETTER HAVE A PARTY!
OH, PARTY PARTY PARTY!
YOU GOTTA PARTY HARDY!
I'M GONNA HAVE A PARTY!
OR ELSE YOU WILL BE SORRY!'
As the music continues to blare, the back doors to some of the trucks swing open as men in black suits poke put with guns in hand and start shooting. Thinking fast, Raven pulls out a red blade as she deflects and blocks several bullets. The rest of the tribe is not fairing so well in comparison. Some fire back, some run for cover, and a few just get shot for not thinking fast enough. One of them, while trying not to make their brown pants yellow, looks back and sees the hole they came in from still wide open.
Wasting no time, he makes a run for the hole in the wall in the hopes of escaping, not bothering to inform his quote unquote family. He reaches twenty feet to freedom. Only for his escape to be lit up by two headlights as another truck runs him over from the left. He ends up crushed beneath the vehicle, left as a mangled mess as the truck stops in front of the hole, blocking the last escape for the Branwens.
As the music continues to play, now on a loop, Vernal pulls out a pair of ring-blade guns and scans for a target. She spots some gunfire flashes from one of the trucks and takes aim. Just as she pulls the trigger, the backdoor to the truck suddenly closes shut, blocking every shot. As she let's out a curse, a few bullets suddenly whizz past her. She quickly snaps her head towards the source and spots some men in black on a roof. More bullets come flying, and she decides not to end up with more holes than she was born with. Thinking fast, she quickly ducks into an alley for cover.
Of course, that assurance of safety is cut short as she spots one of those trucks parked in the alleyway. Before she could turn to see if Raven needed help, a blur of white leaps over the truck and falls towards Vernal. Thinking fast, she raises her blade-guns and manages to block a subpar surprise attack. Specifically, a blade attached to a heel belonging to Melanie Malachite. With her other leg, the white dressed bouncer leaps up and kicks her in the jaw. This staggers the bandit back before she regains her bearings in anger.
Melanie rushes Vernal and delivers a flurry of kicks. All of which are easily blocked, however. The tribe woman manages to swing at her well-dressed opponent, only for Mel to dodge it by flipping back and land in her hands. This results in her spinning her legs in the air and succeeding in landing a combo of kicks. The bandit, not having enough time to counter, is pushed back even further out of the alley as she misses several kicks. Melanie ends the combo by bending her legs towards her center mass and launches herself at the discombobulated girl.
The kick connects, and Vernal is sent flying out into the street. She tumbles across the dried up mud before landing on her feet. Moving quick, she tosses one of her blade-guns at Melanie. This throw is easily countered with a well placed kick as the Xiong bodyguard rushes her. She goes low for a sweeping kick. Seeing this coming, the bandit simply jumps over and prepares to shoot her in the face. Only to be met with a duplicate in red to jump over the one in white and slash at Vernal with a bladed gauntlet. Once again, she is knocked back further.
Now more worried than annoyed, Vernal gets back up to now face both Melanie and Miltia.
Melanie: My, my, dear sister. What do we have here?
Miltia: It looks like a bunch of dirty bandits were hoping to pick on a small village for an easy prize.
Melanie: Mmh mmh mmh. We can't have that. I suppose we'll have to teach this one to pick on people her own size.
Miltia: Let's.
The two waste no more time and bum rush her as she tried looking for her tossed weapon. Deciding to do her best with one, she takes aim and starts shooting. These bolts are quickly dodged and sliced out of the air by the agile sisters as they draw near. As they get closer, Miltia takes charge and rushes her with a swing. Vernal blocks it but notices Melanie one second too late. A foot is planted in her stomach, knocking the wind out of her as she folds over. The first one takes the opportunity and uppercuts her in the face.
Afterward, the twins overwhelm her with a combination of kicks and punches, a portion of which she is powerless to block. Somehow, maybe through actual skill from Vernal, or from a lack thereof from the twins, the bandit is taking a surprisingly minimum amount of cuts. Albeit, each one becomes noticeable to her as the fight goes on. Each one screaming at her for letting this happen. Before she could let out her rage in her own scream, she was once again caught off guard by another wombo combo from the twins. The red one aims low and jabs her in the leg, while the white one flips over her sister and kicks Vernal in the face.
Once again, Vernal goes down like a bitch. This time, it takes her longer to get back up. The taste of iron in her mouth preoccupied her attention for the moment. Swishing her tongue around, she spits out a glob of blood as she breathes heavily. Thoughts begin to rush through her mind as she tries to get back up once more. This wasn't supposed to happen. This was supposed to be a simple and easy raid. Attack the village, steal their shit, then run before any Grimm show up. A tried and tested method that has worked dozens of times. What. Happened?!
The sound of loud music and gunfire almost overwhelms the sound of Vernal's own heartbeat in her ears. As she stumbles to her hands and knees, she spots the blade-gun she tossed earlier not far from where she is. She quickly barrel rolls towards it and grabs her weapon. Now armed with both, she spins around and lets out a snarl as she aims at the twins.
Both of whom are unphased by this action as they stare her down, unamused.
Throughout this segment of the village, the fight rages on. Bullets fly through the air, the sound of swords clashing together echo from alleyways and deserted buildings, and the revving of some chainsaw can be heard, followed by screaming from one of the buildings. All while the lyrics 'party party party' continues to violate everyone's ears.
Overall, Raven is getting pissed.
She had ducked into a building to collect her thoughts as her tribe continued to fight for their lives. Speaking of, she peaks out of a window to see how that was going. So far, calling it a fight would be generous. This was a fucking slaughter. Several members of her tribe were pinned here and there. One of hers was fighting one of those black dressed attackers with a machete, while the other was fighting with a hatchet. At first, it almost looked like the bandit had the upper hand. Until another of the black suits rushes from behind with a red sword and impales her tribe member. A scream can be heard as they fall dead.
That's the seventh of her own that has fallen in this fight, with who knows how many more are dead that she can't see. If this fight continues on..... That's a thought she doesn't want to finish. In fact, her thoughts are interrupted by a window next to her being smashed in with a body. Pulling her sword out, she prepared for a fight until she saw it's one of her own. A woman in a red shirt and black ponytail. Her name is Jatuh.
Jatuh stumbles to her feet with a rifle in hand as she tries to catch her breath. She nearly jumped out of her own skin when she spotted Raven before calming down once she realized who it was.
Jatuh: Raven? This has gotten out of hand! What do we do?
Normally, Raven would chastise anyone in her tribe for showing such weakness. This time, however, she might give the poor girl a pass.
Raven:... This raid is a loss. Go out the backdoor and try to find a way back to the camp. I'll try to get as much of our own out of here in the meantime.
Jatuh nods without question and rushes to the door leading out of the room and hopefully further into the house. Meanwhile, Raven looks back out the window as she thinks of an escape strategy. Unaware of her underling opening the door to safety, only to reveal you with a manic smile.
The sounds of combat outside are soon replaced with a revving chainaxe and blood curdling screams reverberating off the walls. This catches Raven's attention as she snaps around just in time to watch you chop Jatuh in half. Blood and gore splattering on the floor as you finish carving the girl in two. Both halves fall to the ground with meaty thuds as the tribe leader looks through her mask in shock. You, meanwhile, shift your gaze from the fresh corpse to Raven.
(Y/n):..... You look important.
You quickly launch yourself at her with chainaxe at the ready. Raven swiftly brings her red sword up and deflects the axe away from her, resulting in your momentum being interrupted as you are pushed to the side. She tries going in for a strike, only for you to swing your arm around and extend a blade from your gauntlet to swat her blow away. Continuing this new momentum, you swing your axe at her, but she brings her sword over and manages to lock it between the shaft and axe head. The teeth from the axe gnawing the air just inches from her mask. With all her strength, Raven manages to fling you off her and into the far wall. You quickly flip through the air and plant your feet on said wall, kicking yourself off it and launching towards your opponent.
Before she could react, you successfully tackle her and crash both of you through the wall behind her, flinging the two of you across the muddied ground. The sounds of a shoot out now becomes louder as you both get back on your feet. Red and (y/c) dance across your respective skins as you commence a staredown. At least you think it's a staredown. It's hard to tell with that mask. This showdown of the glares is interrupted as a burst of bullets fly past you and try to hit Raven. They are effortlessly blocked as she shifts her murderous gaze to the person behind you.
Soon after, it is revealed to be the Huntsman that agreed to help in this trap. The same Huntsman whose name you still haven't gotten.
???: Mind if I join this dance?
(Y/n): I don't remember inviting you.
???: Yeah, well...
He grabs his rifle weirdly and presses a button on it. Immediately, his gun folds out and extends itself, now taking the form of a blocky yet sturdy bow staff.
???: Bite me.
Not another word is spoken as you both walk away from each other and circle around Raven. She snaps her gaze between the two of you, desperately trying not to keep her eyes off one of you for too long. Deciding to take the initiative, you lurch forward while revving your chainaxe. This gets her full attention as she points her sword at you. The Huntsman takes the chance and jumps at her with staff at the ready. Realizing she's been tricked, Raven swings her sword over her head and blocks the staff.
You rush at her and prepare to disembowel with your weapon. This, however, proves useless as Raven quickly kicks the Huntsman away and blocks your hungry axe. That was apparently a bad idea, as the chainaxe's teeth prove stronger than solid Dust as the sword shatters. This results in a miniature explosion of fire that sends you both flying back from each other.
Raven slides across dirt on her back before coming to a stop. Honestly surprised, she lays there for a second as she processes what just happened. This comes to a quick end as the Huntsman suddenly appears while swinging his staff down on her. She quickly rolls out of the way, avoiding a long metallic pole bashing her ribs in. He lifts the staff again to strike once more, so the head bandit just rolls away again before crawling backwards to avoid several more blows.
Tired of this, Raven allows the Huntsman to get one hit in. As he does, however, she lifts her legs up and blocks the staff with her feet. With every ounce of strength she can muster in her legs, she kicks the staff away from her, causing her opponent to stagger back. Taking her chance, she jumps to her feet, flick the broken sword from the hilt, slams it into the scabbard, and pulls out a fresh new blade. With a flurry of strikes that only a former Huntress can perform, she hacks and slashes at her adversary before winding up a final swing like a baseball bat and bashes him in the face.
This sends him flying back as a white aura pulsates across his body. It increases in intensity for a moment as he slams to the ground. Besides getting his shit rocked, he lets out a pained groan as a sign of him still alive. As he tries to get back up, Raven hears that haunting revving sound again and quickly spins around to lock her sword into your axe once more. With a heave, she flings chainaxe out of your hands. However, with that momentum, you spin your body around and bash the back of your hand into her mask. As your hand makes contact, you fire a bullet at the same time and shatter Raven's stupid fear tactic.
Raven stumbles backwards as she grabs her now exposed face in pain. Just as she moves her hand out of the way, the Huntsman rejoins the fight again and bashes his staff into her face. Now practically walking backwards, she tries to refocuse her eyes, only to see you charge at her, gauntlet blades extended. You slice and jab at her several times, knocking her around with every hit as you finish it by retracting a blade, jump above the stunned bandit, and sucker punch her in the face. Following immediately after, your dance partner cuts in and proceeds to hit her mid section with a flurry of quick hits from his staff before ending it with a roundhouse kick to her head.
You finish your epic wombo combo by jump kicking Raven in the chest, sending her flying back and rolling across the dirt road until she comes to a stop, face down in the prone position. A second later, she tries to get back to her feet, only to stumble and take a knee as she uses her sword to balance herself. Her red aura continuously flickers across her body as her breathing becomes labored. She raises her head and sees the two of you simply standing a few feet away from her. The Huntsman twirls his bow staff in his hands while you drag your blades across each other like you're about to carve a turkey.
Yeah, Raven is officially done with this.
With one last burst of speed, she slices the air in front of her. To your surprise, this wasn't a pathetic attempt at keeping you away, but it created a motherfucking portal! Before either you could react, she quickly jumps in, closing the portal behind her. This leaves you confused as you desperately look around for her.
(Y/n): What the fu--WHERE DID SHE GO!?
Back to Vernal, she lost one of her blade-guns again. This time, she's more cut and bruised than before, with a few cracked ribs added to the mix. And the twins? Well, Melanie has a few cuts to her thigh highs and is missing her flower hairpin. Miltia lost her fur shrug that was around her neck and sports several cuts to her arms and chest.
Beyond these injuries, it is quite clear who are still ready to fight and who is about to tap out.
Before the fight could continue, a red portal appears between the three as a very tired looking Raven flies out, surprising the twins as she attacks them. Without effort, she roundhouse kicks Melanie, sending her crashing into Miltia and sends them both crashing into a nearby building. Immediately after, she stumbles about until she plants her sword down like a walking stick.
Vernal: R-Raven?
Doing her best not to look like she got shit pushed in earlier, Raven turns around and faces Vernal. She walks over... more like limp; and grabs her arm as she leads her towards the truck blocking the hole.
Raven: You need to escape, NOW!
Vernal: What about the others?
Raven: I will try to gather any survivors. What matters is that you get as far away as you can.
Vernal: And the village?
Raven looks back to the inner village that they were supposed to raid. Before she could make a response, she heard something. It was faint due to what little gunfire is left and the constant music, but she recognized it.
A distant screech.
Raven:... It is lost.
Vernal looks at her before nodding. She turns to the truck and uses it to scale the wall, quickly disappearing soon after. Raven turns back to the village. With a few deep breaths, she steels herself and rushes into the gunfight to locate her remaining tribe.
Meanwhile, you are running around with the Huntsman in tow as you search for that bitch.
(Y/n): Fucking chicken shit pussy-ass coward! The moment I get my hands on her, I'm gonna rip her spine out just to see if it's real!
The Huntsman glances at you as he slows down his pace to get a little further away from you. As you continue to scream obscenities, you both spot Raven rushing out of one building and into another. Wasting no time, you both rush towards the building and practically bash the door down with your body. You immediately spot that same portal thing from before. This time, Raven stands between you and what few bandits are left as they jump through. As the last one enters, Raven simply glares at you as she jumps backward towards the portal.
(Y/n): NO! Fight me!
You take your chainaxe in both hands and toss it at her. The moment she completely disappears, so too does the portal as your axe just slices through air and embeds itself into a wall.
(Y/n):............ Fuck. FUCK!
You throw a little tantrum as you march over to where your axe is. The Huntsman just stares at you bemused. Not aware of how many times you've reseted just to end up with this result.
???: She'll get her comeuppance. In the meantime, we need to clean up any stragglers still in the vil--
(Y/n): Shh!
???:... Don't you shush me!
(Y/n): Shush!
You pull out your scroll and hit a button. This causes the music to finally shut off, leaving the two of you in silence. You tilt your head to the side as you try to listen for something.
???: What is it?
(Y/n): Did you not hear that?
Before the Huntsman could open his mouth to talk, a haunting screech echoes through the air, followed by something metallic being hit. This causes your companion to go wide eye as his mouth goes agape.
???: No...
He just rushes put the door without another word. Confused, you follow after him to see what is happening. As you exit, you see one of your trucks flying through the air and crash into a building. Turning towards where the fuck that came from, you spot what looked like the ass of a gaint black horse disappearing behind a building. The sounds of distant screams and gunfire coming from that direction clue you in that it's probably nothing good.
Before you could ask what is happening, the Huntsman practically answers for you.
???: A Nuckelavee...
(Y/n):... A nucklewhatsee?
