Feathers Ruffled
Swara reclined, enjoying a rare moment of peace after a series of chaotic events, her thoughts swirling like a tempest. 'Man, my choice to relocate here must have ruffled their feathers. They'll either put a lid on their antics or scramble to step up their game. I need to keep my head in the game and grab this chance while I can.'
She closed her eyes, trying to tune into Kavita and Adarsh's hustle through her powers, but all she got was her romantic time with Sanskar, growing intense by the second. "Dang, why am I still stuck on our moments? I gotta refocus and figure out what Adarsh and Kavita are up to," she murmured, closing her eyes again in determination.
This time, she was hit with flashes of dining out with Nikhil and Sia at a fancy joint, complete with a server clumsily spilling wine on her outfit. Annoyed, she snapped her eyes open. "Why on earth am I getting these pointless flashes of my own? Pratha, do you think I'm overlooking something?"
"I'm not entirely sure, Swara. I wasn't part of your previous life. Maybe you should rack your brain a bit more; every power has its limits." Pratha's voice echoed in Swara's mind.
"Limits? Oh, I guess I've been pushing my powers based on what I thought they were from my past life, but the reality is, I've only just come into this power recently."
"That's it. Now, take a moment to really reflect. What went down in your past life when you first got those powers, and how did you wield them?"
"Hmm, when I first got the power..." Swara mused, scratching her chin. It dawned on her that, initially, she only glimpsed moments of herself. "For more than a month, it was just flashes of me being bullied or getting into trouble, so I knew to steer clear."
"What's the deal with that?" Pratha questioned.
"I reckon I can only foresee my future up to a certain point. I'm ready to take a leap. Geez, what now? How do I stay one step ahead of Adarsh and Kavita?" Swara's train of rambling screeched to a halt as a sudden realization struck her.
"Those future glimpses weren't spot-on, but they've definitely given me an advantage. Get ready, Adarsh and Kavita, because I've got a surprise in store," Swara murmured to herself with a knowing grin as she emerged from the bathtub.
Swara was getting the hang of things at the pack house, getting to know how the duties were divvied up among the crew, when a loud yell caught her attention, causing her to knit her brows in concern.
"Why are you all still hanging around here? Training's on! Get out to the field already!" Kavita hollered at the group of youngsters who were busy laughing and chatting at the breakfast table.
"And what do we have here?" She snagged the arm of a passing omega who was carrying a tray. "Is this Sanskar's breakfast?" She took a peek inside, scrunching her nose in mild disgust.
"Did I ask you to bring this to Sanskar?" She yelled again. The omega shook her head.
"Then who did? How dare you take it upon yourself? Sanskar can't stand eggs Benedict with crispy prosciutto, ugh."
Annoyed by Kavita's ear-splitting yell, Swara marched out of the kitchen and stood there, arms folded. "Yeah, I did it. Got a problem with that?" She emphasized it pointedly.
Kavita spun around, taken aback by Swara's stern expression and commanding presence. She cleared her throat and moderated her tone. "Swara, you've just arrived at the pack house. You don't yet know his preferences, so don't worry yourself..."
"I know Sanskar better than you," Swara cut in sharply, then turned her attention to the omega holding the breakfast tray. "You go ahead," she instructed.
"Hey, hold up there. Did I say you could go?" Kavita scolded the omega firmly.
Nearly half of the pack house had gathered around, observing the heated argument, most expecting Kavita to emerge victorious. While they admired their friendly and warm-hearted Luna, they also recognized Kavita's commanding and uncompromising nature.
'I can't allow Swara to get under my skin. With everyone watching, I've got to show her who's boss and make it clear to everyone that this pack house is still my territory, no matter who's wearing the Luna title.'
"Swara, let me make this clear: Sanskar won't be pleased with..."
"Alpha Sanskar..." Swara cut in again. "Mind your position. Who do you think you are, giving orders around here?"
"I'm the one in charge around here, and..."
"And who gave you that authority?" Swara interjected sharply.
Kavita was eager to assert her authority, but Swara wasted no time in putting her in her place.
From the beginning, Kavita had walked through Crescent Moon's pack house as if she owned it, flaunting her status as Sanskar's girlfriend and future Luna, bossing people around even after her true colors were revealed. Swara finally knocked her down a peg.
"I... I am Adarsh's mate," she stuttered, trying to assert the weight of her status.
"And who is Adarsh? Some omega? Kavita, you don't even hold that rank."
"Swara, you're crossing a line."
"No, I'm not. Consider yourself fortunate that you're not out there struggling to survive alone without shelter or a pack; otherwise, you'd have turned rogue by now."
"Oops, Luna nailed it."
"Wow, our Luna is incredible."
"Way to go, Luna! That was a lesson Kavita won't forget."
"She definitely had it coming."
A soft ripple of laughter and whispers spread through the spacious hall, leaving Kavita feeling visibly flustered as she glanced around, snorting.
She was about to snap back at Swara, but when she spotted Sanskar descending the stairs, she swiftly changed her tune.
"Why are you blowing this out of proportion? I was just mentioning what Sanskar—oops, sorry, Alpha Sanskar—likes."
"Oh, is that...?" Swara paused at Sanskar's voice.
"What's happening here?"
'Oh, Sanskar's here. I was just trying to figure out why this fierce cat suddenly went all shy and timid,' Swara chuckled softly. "Nothing serious, just Kavita giving me a rundown on your likes and dislikes," she said playfully, linking her arm with Sanskar's.
Sanskar frowned, casting a brief glance at Kavita before fixing his gaze on Swara. "And who is she to school you? Haven't you known me long enough, since we were kids?"
"Yes, I do, but..." She trailed off, idly playing with Sanskar's shirt button, pausing for effect.
"But?" Sanskar quirked an eyebrow.
"I knew that, which is why I made your favorite eggs Benedict with crispy prosciutto. But Kavita insisted you wouldn't like it."
"Sweetheart, you know I love everything you cook, and eggs Benedict with crispy prosciutto is my top favorite, especially when it's made by you."
Swara and Sanskar were all lovey-dovey, completely absorbed in each other, exchanging affectionate words and holding hands as if no one else existed around them.
"I knew you'd love it. Kavita is completely useless; maybe I should take matters into my own hands," Swara said with a mock-angry pout. Sanskar kissed her pouting lips with a smile.
"Do whatever you think is best. You're not just my Luna but also the lady of our household. I have to go now; see you later." Sanskar placed a lingering kiss on Swara's forehead before heading out.
Swara waved at Sanskar's retreating figure, then turned to Kavita, dusting off her hands. "Kavita, from now on, you'll be handling garden duties and assisting the old gardener."
A chorus of giggles erupted across the hall, pricking at Kavita's ego.
"You can't do this to me. If I have to work, I'll assist the chef," she shot back, struggling to keep her rising fury in check.
"Neither I nor any of the pack members would dare to eat food you’ve touched and risk their lives. We've had enough bad experiences already," Swara remarked with a smirk. "You'd be better off staying out of the house."
Kavita was eager to convince Swara to let her work in either the training yard or on serving duties, knowing she couldn't endure the scorching sun in the garden. However, she realized her pleas would likely go unheard.
Throughout the day, Kavita stewed while tending to her garden duties. In the evening, as Adarsh arrived, she dashed over and eagerly took hold of his hand.
"Adarsh, Swara is really pushing it. Do you have any idea what went down while you were gone?"
'I knew all about it, but you're not blameless either. Couldn't you have kept a lower profile around her? Why did you have to provoke her?' Adarsh communicated through their mental link.
"What the hell? You think I was out of line too?" Kavita exclaimed, clearly annoyed.
'Yeah, and for crying out loud, use the mind link. Witches have ears like hawks,' Adarsh scolded Kavita, further souring her mood as she could only sulk and wear a long face in response.
Adarsh sighed, his heart going out to Kavita, who was clearly distressed. He reached out, gently cupping her face. "Hang in there a little longer; we're almost there."
His words tapered off as his attention shifted to the door.
"Surprise!" Swara announced enthusiastically as she entered with Nikhil, freshly discharged from the hospital.
