Chapter Twenty
Unedited.
Fitz looked up at Elwin, as Elwin dabbed a salve the large gashing cut over Fitz's nose that ran down his cheek, along with the many others on his face.
"She did it." Elwin breathed. "Our girl did it." He said though he looked as if he were trying hard not to cry. It had been nearly a day, since Fitz and the group of councilors and friends had been swamped by dark elves, the had flooded in the tunnel. They had been the front line defence, and then they had been surrounded. Zarina was just about to get her head lopped off, when all the demons froze before breaking down and falling to piles of gold dust.
Now at the surface people were observing the destroyed city. Fitz sat on a cot getting his wounds tended to, as Biana and Dex limped over to another nearby cot. The warriors were hurt and still in pain. Fitz however was watching for Sophie, as his wounds were checked again. "I can't believe." Elwin laughed, "I can, but I can't." He said. Fitz smiled, "She is amazing." He said, as he stood, he went over to Biana, who still had a thick poultice on her ankle. "How are you?" He asked is sister.
Biana smiled clutching Dex's hand. "I'm alrig-" she was cut off by a shout. "Guys, you won't believe this!" Harley shouted, hardly attracting attention of other elves. Harley was grinning from ear to ear as he stood on a damaged roof of a short building. He was looking towards the edge of the city. Fitz looked up to see Sophie limping forward, her arm in a makeshift sling, behind her like a dutiful bodyguard, Sandor limped behind her. The circlet on Sophie's head was tarnished, her clothes were dirty, sweaty and bloody, large cuts were on her dirty face that glistened with sweat, but to Fitz, Sophie couldn't have looked better. Glancing at Biana, his sister smiled. "Go to her." She said. Fitz stood up and ran to Sophie.
The closer he got, he realized just how injured she was. She wore Sandor's scorched tunic, her own burned one making a sling, and a bandage around her leg. Her arm that was in her sling was bleeding badly. When Fitz got to her "Are you okay?" He asked in a panic, as he looked at Sophie's injuries. He didn't see Sophie slip her circlet off and hand it to Sandor, but he felt her hand on the back of his neck making him stand up, Sophie met his lips with her own. Someone who sounded suspiciously like Keefe whistled, But Fitz wrapped his arms around Sophie and kissed her. He could taste the coppery taste of her blood on her lips, but he kissed her, just as needy as she did him.
It felt as if his mind was melting to his shoes, as the relief of having her back, finally in his arms over took him. Sophie pulled away, and wrapped her free arm around him, resting her head on his shoulder, her lips touching his shoulder, she held on. "I love you." She transmitted. Fitz pressed his own head into her shoulder. "I love you too." He whispered out loud, gently squeezing her. "There is enough time for that later. Physic! Aster! We've got burns here!" Elwin shouted as he ran up. Sophie stepped away from Fitz. She wasn't blushing and she wasn't a stuttering mess. Instead she was sure and positive, she loved him, and that made Fitz's heart flutter and pound, and the smile she gave him, as she stepped beside Sandor made him realize, just how much he loved her. He wasn't going to to stop either.

Sophie stared down at the reconstruction of Eternalia. It was nearly finished with everyone working together, including goblins and ogres.
"Hi." Sophie looked up at Fitz as he stood next to her on the hill. "Hi." She said. He held his handout holding up his home crystal. "Come on, I have something for you. We all do." He said. Sophie placed her hand in his.
In Everglen back yard, Sophie found Grady, Edaline, Linh, Tam, Wylie, Dex, Biana, Della and Alden, and Sandor. Sophie looked around in confusion, "We know it won't make up for everything we've done, but we hope..it helps." Edaline said. Sophie frowned in confusion, before a door opened and Keefe came from the side of the house leading a snow white foal. Sophie frowned as the stub on the head then she noticed the wings, she felt her face break in a smile, "Silveny the second." She squealed dropping to her knees. The foal trotted to her, as Silveny and Greyfell barreled from the side of the horse.
"Friend! Sophie! Visit! Baby! Sophie! Sophie!"
Sophie stood up and wrapped her arms around her friend. "Hello Silveny." She smiled, pressing a kiss to Silveny's muzzle. She went to Greyfell and did the same before kneeling beside the alicorn. She stared into the soft brown eyes of the animal, as a word bounced and formed in her mind. "Hope? That's your name girl?" She asked as she rubbed the small mane. "There has always been hope, that the time line would reset." Alden said. Sophie pressed a kiss to the small foal. "It's a perfect name for such a perfect thing." Sophie whispered. "We have to take them back to the sanctuary, we were only allowed to show you." Edaline said. Sophie sighed before hugging the alicorns. When she stepped back, Fitz wrapped and arm around her shoulders.
"I'm sure you can visit them anytime." He said. "Of course she can." Wylie said, his circlet fitted him perfectly. With a dark obsidian stone set in the gold band, he smiled at Sophie, "I've also set something up...for us." He said pulling a thick filled form from his breast pocket. Sophie breathed in, before nodding. "Yeah. That's...that's the right thing to do." She said. "What is that?" Keefe asked. "It's a secret that's going to ashes." Sandor said pulling Sophie's trunk outside. "Yeah. Ashes." Sophie said as Alden lit a fire in the fire pit. "Now I really want to know." Keefe said curiously kicking the trunk.
Sophie pulled the key from around her neck and walked to the fire. Wylie hesitated for a moment, he looked at the folded form. "Is of weird I might miss this?" He asked as he threw Anne's form into the fire. "Well you know." Sophie said as she kneeled down to unlock the trunk, "You can always get another." She said throwing the lid back, showing her and Sandor's own forms. "Yeah...I'm sure I'll need it sometime." Wylie said. Sophie picked up Eliza's form. Melancholy mixed with bitter sweetness. She sent Wylie an understanding smile, "I'm gonna miss it too." She said before dropping the form into the fire. Sandor hesitated too, before he shook his head and threw his own form in the fire.
Sophie felt a twinge in her chest bone, as she watched the name Eliza Minter burn. "Well if I'm being honest." Alden said, pulling another form from his pocket he sent Sophie a wink before throwing the form in the fire. "WHAT?!" Sophie and Wylie both gaped. Alden laughed and mimed zipping his lips. Sophie watched open mouthed as the form burned. "Okay what is this?!" Keefe asked reaching for one of the forms in the trunk. Both Wylie, Sandor and Sophie stomped their feet on top glaring at Keefe. One by one the forms were burned, and with a twinge in the chest the identities vanished as well. Sophie kept glancing at Alden who only smiled as he pulled his wife closer to her side. As Wylie, and Sandor and Sophie held onto three stacks Sophie hesitated at her journal.
She stared at it for a long moment before handing it to Fitz. He looked surprised but when Sophie nodded her permission he took it, and opened it. "How come he gets to read your diary?" Dex asked. "It's a journal..." Fitz said slowly as he flipped through the pages. "Of...if when she was lost." He said. Everyone quieted, Sophie listened to him skim pages, as she threw her forms in the fire. With the last page she heard him stop. First reading the date, then the rest.
The next page dated to nearly half a month ago. Sophie looked back at him and his had the biggest smile he closed the journal, he handed it back to Sophie, his smile never leaving. "Throw it in." She said. "No, let us read it." Biana teased. "Oh yeah, let's learn some of Foster's secrets." Keefe said. Fitz threw her journal on the fire, causing brown, gold and teal sparks to flow up into the air. Sophie and Fitz linked hands and watched the sparks vanish, with that the reign of the Neverseen came to an end.
"So much has changed lately." Wylie said as the last form turned to ash. Sophie had sat down and was watching the fire, and Grady and Edaline had returned. "Yeah." She and Sandor agreed quietly with the others. Sandor and her had agreed not to speak about Lucifer, but Sophie did have a cognate partner, so only three people would know about Lucifer, should she cognate with Fitz. Wylie cleared his throat catching her attention with a pearly smile. "The species all agreed what has happened proves we need unity." He said. Sophie felt her heart flip, and Wylie's smile grew wider, as she sat straighter leaning forward. "They'll all need a representative." He said pulling another form from the inside pocket of his jerkin.
Sophie felt her eyes light up, as Wylie handed her the form. "They've all agreed on out choice." He winked as Sophie hurriedly unfolded the paper, with the sounding of thick crinkling paper, Sophie's eyes scanned the page. She clutched Fitz's arm as she did her best to contain her squeal when she spotted her name. "Wait..." Sophie said blinking as she read the paragraph over, her smile fading. "What is it?" Fitz asked taking her hand and leaning over. Sophie looked up at Wylie who was smiling even bigger. "You'll need a guard to go with you." He said glancing at Sandor who nodded. "But the physician?" Sophie asked. Keefe laughed. "Only Foster would need a personal physician to go with her."
But staring at the name on the form, Sophie couldn't understand. The paper was pulled out of her hand. "Hold on!" Fitz said reading the paper. "I'm not even a physician......yet." He added quietly, making everyone go quiet. "Sophie isn't finished school, and by the time she gets out, you could be finished training as a physician, and the council figured who better to treat Sophie than her cognate partner. You'll not only know if she's hurt physically, but you'll also be a mental stabilizer and be able to take care of her that way as well, however I could find someone else if you don't want to." Wylie said. Fitz looked at Sophie clutching her hand. His eyebrow raising. "Would you be okay with that?" He asked, handing her the papers back.
"I mean yeah, if you're fine with it. If you want to. But it's also my dream job, not yours, maybe-"
"I would love to work with you Sophie." Fitz transmitted, they both looked at the form. "I'd love to work with you too." Sophie said shooting Fitz a sideways glance with a smile. Fitz grinned, "I'd love to take the job." He said. "Well obviously." Keefe said. Sophie looked at the papers smiling, she glanced at Sandor. "You think you can put up with me?" She asked. Sandor for once sent her a wide smirk, "I'm still alive aren't I?" Sophie chuckled. "We're still alive." She agreed, her smile vanished as she met Sandor's eyes, with a more serious note. Lucifer was gone, and they were here. Sandor gave her an encouraging smile, and she looked back at the form. Her dream job, looking around the bonfire she still had her family. She glanced down at her entertained hand with Fitz.
She still and finally had Fitz.
"The job will be held for you three, until school is finished, and will be ready for you to pick up at any time." Wylie said, Sophie hesitantly handed him the form back, afraid if she let go, it'd really just turn back to nothing more than a dream. Wylie smiled, "You've still got a lot of stuff to catch up on." He said. "Just be a teenager for now." He said as he refolded the form. But how was Sophie supposed to be a teenager is she woke up every night screaming from nightmares that contained a spider like creature named Lucifer? How was she supposed to be okay after that? How was Sandor supposed to be okay after that?
Sophie smiled tightly at Wylie. "I can try." She said. "Speaking of teenagers." Keefe said smirking at Sophie and Fitz. "Just what was that kiss about?" He asked. Sophie felt one side of her mouth tug up in a half smile, she nudged Fitz who cleared his throat. "It's um...it's a cognate thing." He lied making Sophie laugh, and shake her head, before looking around the bonfire of amused faces. "I'm glad to be back....unharmed and not dead." She said. "I'm still curious about how you fully pulled that off." Biana said.
Sophie smiled, "Oh yeah,.." Dex spoke up. "How'd thee bomb work?" He asked. The smile wiped off of Sophie's face. She looked at Sandor who was remembering the same thing. "It was efficient." Sophie said shortly. Dex frowned, "Well how big of an explosion was it?" He asked. "Big enough." Sandor said in the same tone as Sophie. Dex tapped his foot a bit irritated but he nodded, "So pretty big, and pretty good." He said. "Yeah." Sophie said, shoving the memories of looking back on the valley.
"I have a question." Grady said. Sophie looked at him, he was looking between Fitz and Sophie. "Have you two cognated yet?" He asked. "No." Fitz answered. "I'm curious, is time still stopping you?" Alden asked. "No." Sophie said, something else was this time, something called Lucifer. "Well what's stopping you?" Tam asked, looking at Sophie with a raised eyebrow. Sophie felt Fitz look at her curious. "It's not right. Not yet." She said. "But isn't it stopping you front teleporting too?" Dex asked. Sophie nodded, "It does. But itself worth the wait."
"What is stopping us?" Fitz asked through transmission. Sophie took her hands and folded them in her lap. "Not now. Please." Sophie transmitted as she looked back at Dex. "For now I'll have to settle for transporting the normal way." She said making the others laugh. "We'll talk about it later?" Fitz asked. "Yeah." Sophie agreed. Even though Lucifer was gone he still lived in Sophie's mind. Sophie's and Sandor's, and Sophie knew it was going to take a long time to fully kill him, and only until he was completely gone, would she cognate with Fitz.
"You staying the night?" Biana asked Sophie after Linh agreed. "Sure." Sophie agreed. "We can do makeovers." Biana said smiling. "No." Both Sophie and Dex said. Making the others laugh. Sophie smiled and stood up, she excused herself and went to the kitchen. Getting water Sophie found herself staring up at the tall ceiling. Lucifer was still there in her mind, and Sophie knew she had to do one last thing before he was completely gone. She'd have to have her memories erased.
"What's wrong?" Fitz asked as he and Alden strode in to the kitchen, both looking concerned. Sophie set her cup of water down and face them. "I need some of my memories to be erased." She said.
