Push Off a Cliff

In truth, Veronica had mostly forgotten the incident the night before. She had thought it over, seen logic, and just wasn't worried anymore. Again, what could she have really done?

A lot, apparently.

Veronica thought nothing of the odd looks when she went to her locker in next morning, those were pretty usual for her. The title of 'girl who tried to blow up a school' would unnerve anyone. There were whispers and fingers being pointed, but Veronica didn't care too much. Again, that was normal.

It wasn't until J.D walked up with a worried look that she got worried.

Now, J.D talking to her was usual, despite Veronica wanting nothing to do with him anymore. She had helped him through therapy, and he was getting better, but every second she spent with him was like a tidal wave of PTSD. She couldn't look at him without feeling completely awful, and she didn't want to live with that. They had talked, and he seemed to understand. They broke it off, although they still said 'hi', every once in a while.

When he got to her, he leaned in close, and whispered "What'd you do?"

"Wh-I didn't do anything," Veronica replied, confused. "Wait-."

J.D held up his phone, and Veronica saw a post on something like instagram that read: 'Veronica Sawyer tried and nearly succeeded taking down the We'll Get Better app!'

Veronica gaped. "What in the- Who wrote this?!"

"I bet it was Jenna Roland," J.D hissed. "That stupid girl is the exact definition of a gossip mill. Look, if we go to her and then demand-."

"Uh..." Veronica interrupted. She knew he wouldn't go as far as he had in the past, but she knew that he would still go to very unnecessary lengths. "J.D, no offense, but I'll figure this out myself. Thanks anyway."

J.D looked like he wanted to argue, and Veronica winced. At this, J.D let out a sigh and nodded. "A-Alright," he agreed. "But if need-."

"Yeah, alright, I got it," Veronica promised, and left to find Jenna Roland. She felt J.D's eyes on her as she left.

There were only a couple minutes until Veronica had to get to class. Of course, Jenna Roland was IN her class, but confronting her while Ms Wormwood was trying to talk about history probably wouldn't slide, regardless of how kind Ms Wormwood was.

"Yo, YO!"

Veronica paused, unsure whether that was meant for her or for someone else. Apparently fro her, because someone suddenly threw a hand over her shoulder in a 'friendly' manner. Veronica tensed. Jared Kleinman either didn't notice, or didn't care.

"Hey, were you the one who completely crashed the app their talking about?" he asked. He sounded condescending. Veronica winced.

"Er... I guess..." Veronica muttered, frowning.

Jared laughed, and Veronica rolled her eyes. She started to looking around again for Jenna Roland.

"Why?!" Jared wheezed, trailing behind her annoyingly. "What, you too cool for it?"

"It wasn't intention?" Veronica told him, gritting her teeth.

"Wasn't?" Jared scoffed. "How do you accidentally take down an entire multi-millionaire app?"

Veronica threw up her hands in frustration. "I don't know!" she all but screamed. "I didn't mean to!"

"Right," Jared snorted. "What were you trying to do instead? Order pizza with it?"

"For you information, I was trying to find the source code!" Veronica groaned. "Can you go away now?!"

Jared chortled, ignoring Veronica's suggestion. "HOW DO YOU THAT?!"

"I DON'T KNOW!" Veronica yelled again. "Go away."

"You don't want me to do that," Jared smirked. "Because if you really want-."

Bring Bring!

"Wow, is that the bell?!" Veronica cried. She quickly turned around. "See you in class, Jared!!"

She left Jared in the hall, practically sprinting to the class.

Little did she know, no one ran away from Jared forever. Right after morning classes, he approached her again, much to her disappointment. She tried sneaking to the cafeteria, but she was found.

"Hey, hey!" he called. "I-."

"What?!" Veronica cried. "Look, I don't mean to sound mean, but I don't need this right-!"

"Would you calm down?!" Jared huffed, rolling his eyes. "I was going to help you look into that code."

Veronica frowned, raising an eyebrow. Jared shrugged.

"Well, with a price," he added. Veronica sighed.

"Well, I kind of-," Veronica started, but a tap on her shoulder stopped her. She looked around, and lit up when she saw the exact person she was looking for. "Jenna!"

Jenna smirked. "That's me."

Veronica let out a sigh of relief. "I've been looking for you all day!" she said. Jenna looked pleasantly surprised. "I need you to take down your message!"

Now Jenna was frowning. "The one about you taking down the We'll Get Better app?" Jenna asked. "I didn't post that. I was going to ask you about it, though, speaking of which..."

"It was an accident," Veronica said crossly, looking around for Jared. It seems that when Jenna appeared, he disappeared. "If you didn't write it then who did?"

"It wasn't me," Jenna told her. "And how did you 'accidently' take down an entire-?"

"Good question," Veronica sighed. "Are you done? I'm getting lunch."

Jenna frowned. "Is that really it?"

"Yes," Veronica huffed. "Look, I'm sorry if you don't believe me, but I'm hungry and I need to eat. Go and sit with your friends."

Jenna frowned. "Pfft, I don't have friends," Jenna muttered, turning away. She probably didn't mean for Veronica to hear her, but Veronica did anyway. She was a little confused.

"What?" Veronica asked. "But I thought... aren't you and Chloe and Brooke...?"

"...Well, no, not really," Jenna told her. At first she seemed hesitant to respond, but then opened up. "They don't really like talking to me, if it's not something 'gossip' related. And they've been talking to Heather McNamara anyway."

"Oh..." Veronica realized. She'd seen McNamara around with those two. "I'm sorry."

"Whatever," Jenna sighed. "Maybe I don't have anything interesting to say."

"Oh..." Veronica repeated. "Well, if you want you can sit with me, I guess. We won't have to talk about gossip, if you don't want to."

Jenna turned around to face her. "Really?!"

Veronica shrugged. "If you want," she replied. "Maybe we can talk about... I don't know, movies?"

Jenna appeared happy with this. She practically skipped over to Veronica's side. "Have you heard of this movie called 'The 39 Steps?'."

"No, tell me about it."

Eventually, the two settled into a comfortable and surprisingly entertaining conversation. Veronica was surprised; she hadn't really made any friends since coming to this school and the friends she had made before she didn't really hang out with that often. The only person she really talked to on a daily basis was Martha.

So having someone to really talk to for an hour was really nice. It was a change of pace Veronica was happy with. Maybe, if Jenna wanted to, they could do this again sometime.

Roughly three quarters into lunch, when both Veronica and Jenna had finished their disgusting cafeteria food (yes, it was still disgusting for some reason; Denaro High could STILL not break the cliché of horrible food in high schools) when someone swaggered up to them. Jenna and Veronica looked up to see Jared Kleinman with his arms crossed and smirking.

"Hey, if you want that app decoded, come to the school library after school," he told Veronica, leaning on the table. His cool façade was hindered by the fact that he almost seemed afraid to look at Jenna. "We'll discuss payment there~."

With that, Jared swaggered off again, with Jenna and Veronica staring after him.

"...What in the..." Veronica started.

"Are you going to go?" Jenna whispered. Veronica shrugged.

"I don't know," she sighed. "He's kind of creepy..."

"Oh," Jenna said. She almost seemed disappointed.

"But... I am sort of curious," Veronica thought aloud. "Maybe I'll go. But what could he mean by payment?"

Jenna shrugged. "Money?"

"Maybe," Veronica agreed. "Well, I pretty sure I could overpower... him..."

Veronica paused, suddenly realizing that, with her reputation, that might not have been the smartest thing to say.

Luckily, Jenna seemed to take it in stride.

"Right," Jenna told her. "And I'm always here for backup if you need me?"

Veronica sighed in relief, nodding. "Right."

They high fived, and at this point, Veronica was almost happy with herself.
