Multitasking: Running and Looking
A grey wall filled the space of the doorway, but even though Veronica had been waiting for this moment, dreaming of it for weeks and weeks one end, she didn't move. How could she, really? What laid behind the door was not freedom, but another kind of horrible. Even worse than the weeks and weeks of what had might as well have been solitude, this was from Veronica's worse nightmares.
But Alice was having that. Somehow, Alice gathered her bravery and nudge Veronica with her foot. Veronica started, looking up at her in surprise. She wasn't serious.
Yet Alice's soft, round face showed no hints of a joke, and Veronica was forced to confront the fact that Alice wanted her to get up.
But why? Hasn't Veronica been through enough?
Apparently not, the universe decided, and Veronica shakily got to her feet. She found Alice a short distance away, peeking out of the doorway. When she looked back, Veronica was surprised to find a relieved expression on her face.
"The person was the weird voice is gone!" Alice whispered it, yet it seemed to echo around the building. Veronica frowned, why was it so quiet?
Suddenly, Alice's face changed to a more sorrowful one, one that got Veronica worried. "But... your friend... she's not moving!"
"What?!" that got Veronica up. She quickly hurried to Alice's side, looking over her shoulder at Jenna's slumped form. Veronica gulped, she wasn't breathing.
"Oh god," was that a sob Veronica felt rising to her throat? Why was this all happening? "Jenna! Oh no!"
"Quick!" Alice cried. "Check if she's breathing! Hurry!"
"Uh..." Veronica knelt down. She'd seen this done in movies, but... "She's breathing!"
Veronica breathed a sigh of relief. She could feel the pulse on Jenna's wrist with her two fingers. Somehow that worked, though. Veronica breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well, that's good," Alice said. "Can you wake her up?"
"Uh." Once again, Veronica was kneeling down. She shook Jenna, fist lightly, then harshly, but Jenna didn't show any signs that it got to her. "It looks like she's out cold."
"Oh, great," Alice shook her head. "How are we supposed to find the detective now?!"
"Huh?" Veronica frowned, standing up. "The Detective? You know who that is?"
"No, not at all," Alice said. "But, Jenna, she mentioned it, right? We need to find the Detective!"
"Uh, right," Veronica said. Now that she mentioned it, Veronica did remember something about finding a Detective. "Okay, yeah, let's find them."
"Great," Alice nodded determinedly. "Where do we start?"
As it turns out, neither of them had any clue where to start (unsurprisingly) but they could both agree that whoever this person was, they were most likely not with the police. Therefore, it might be a bit useless to try and find them in a police station.
Alice and Veronica decided to take their leave, as their probably wasn't going to be any one to stop them, but with every step, Veronica's anticipation grew. She half expected Carrie to leap out at any moment, but she never did. Maybe she had better stuff to 'seek'.
Whatever it was, Veronica was grateful for it.
As Alice and Veronica walked through the halls, they must have set a good example, because others started following them. Veronica saw JD and Jake and Rich and so many other people too. It seemed that every cell in the building had opened. That probably wouldn't be a good thing, Veronica thought bitterly, if the jail cells were filled with anything other than high school students. And only students from Denaro.
This breakout wouldn't be so bad if only they had been released by anything other than a clearly homicidal ghost.
Alice and Veronica poked their head out through the doors to the outside, checking each and every way for any threats, whether that be policemen or specters. They didn't see anything, expect for someone in a jeep a short distance, at the end of the parking lot.
Veronica's eyes widened.
"It's Jared," she hissed to Alice.
"Huh?"
"Jared!" Veronica grabbed Alice's hand, tugging her through the doors and in a beeline for the jeep. "Jared, my friend! Come on!"
The person in the jeep wasn't Jared.
Narrowed brown eyes met with wide blue ones as Veronica and the nervous sand haired boy locked eyes. Veronica frowned as she watched Evan gulp and roll down the window.
"Uh...Evan?" she asked. "This isn't your jeep."
"I know, I know!" Evan cried, like he was expecting this while also fearing it. "It's Jared's! I just took it because Jared got stabbed!"
Veronica blinked. "Stabbed?" She briefly remembered the conversation between the man and Shirley.
Evan nodded. He looked around nervously. "Him and a bunch of other people. I don't know what's going on!"
Alice and Veronica shared a look.
"I-We don't really know either," she told him. "But why are you here? With Jared's vehicle?"
"Er... well, I was looking for help..." Evan looked embarrassed. "The ambulance arrived, but the police didn't... so I don't know, I decided to come and get them!"
"And then you never got out of Jared's car," Veronica noted. Evan flushed.
"Uh... Going inside was too scary?"
"That's fair," Veronica shook her head. They really didn't have time for this. "Let us in. We need to find someone named the Detective."
"Named The Detective?" Evan repeated. He sounded just as confused as Veronica felt.
"Yes-no-I don't know," Veronica shook her head. "Let us in, Evan."
Evan did, and Veronica climbed into the front seat. After a bit of hesitation, and a bit of encouragement from Veronica, Alice climbed into the backseat.
"I...uh..." Evan gulped, but he barrelled on forward anyway. "About the Detective, I...think...? I know something about them? Jared mentioned them once, off-handedly..."
"Oh?" Veronica turned to Evan quickly. "What'd he say??"
"Er... nothing much!" Evan told her quickly. "Just uh... that 'you can find anything on the internet these days, even a detective'."
"Huh... so we can find them on the internet," Veronica hummed, thoughtfully. It wasn't much, but it was something. "Evan, give me your phone."
"Huh?"
"Your phone! If they're on the internet, then let's look for them!"
Evan looked nervous. "Why can't we use your phone?"
"All I had was Jenna's phone, and, well, they took it away," Veronica winced, trying not to think about that particular reunion. "Just give me your phone, Evan."
After a bit of hesitancy, Evan did as he was told, unlocking and opening up the internet first. As Veronica grabbed it, she briefly wondered what he was hiding, but then she remembered that she'd probably do the exact same thing, despite not having anything bad or embarrassing on there. It was just an instinctual thing, Veronica supposed.
Quick as she could, Veronica typed 'the Detective' into the search bar. Now that she thought about it, there was really no way this could work, right? After all, there must be a dozen different things for 'the Detective', how could they find this specific one...?
Suddenly, Veronica grinned. It was the first result.
"Are we sure this is it...?"
"For the last time, Evan, yes. This was where she told me to go when I called her."
"I just... are you sure we should trust this?"
Veronica threw up her hands. There was really no reason she should be getting this frustrated so quickly, but it was either this or killer ghost. Why couldn't Evan get that?
"Jenna said to go to her," Veronica pointed out. "Besides, we have no. Choice."
Evan gulped. "Er...okay... Maybe I should call my mom..."
Veronica shrugged. "Okay, do that. But me and Alice are going inside."
"My mom's probably at the scene of crime though," Evan was muttering, probably to himself. "She's probably working..."
Veronica sighed. "Okay... then come with us."
Evan looked nervous, but he nodded. "O-Okay... I will."
"Easily convinced," Veronica muttered. "Alice, you ARE coming, right?"
Alice nodded, probably more enthusiastically then necessary. "Come on, come on!" she urged them. "We need to save everyone!"
Veronica, Evan and Alice got out of the car, right in front of the motel that the Detective told them about. If Veronica was being honest, she would say that this place kind of seemed shady to her as well. But she had heard the ghost, Carrie, she'd seen what it'd done. Veronica squared her shoulders, and marched forward.
And was almost immediately turned around again.
The door to one of the rooms suddenly flew open and a middle aged woman dressed like a stereotypical modern day Sherlock Holmes marched out.
Veronica didn't know what to say, which didn't matter much, as 'the Detective' was already speaking. Well, speaking was a bit of a stretch.
"1006 Drummond Street!" the lady yelled, rushing out to meet them. "Bates High School! Now!"
"Uh...?" Veronica stared at the woman, her mouth agape. The Detective waved her hand, looking irritated.
"Get in that jeep!" she called, despite not needing to anymore. "1006 Drummond Street, Bates High School! The longer we liger the more people die, and the more people die, the more attention this place gets, and eventually they'll start noticing I haven't paid yet! So start the damn jeep already!!"
Veronica crawled back into the jeep, probably slower than the Detective would have liked. She turned to Evan, who was staring around with wide eyes.
"Uh..." Veronica swallowed. "1006 Drummond Street. Bates High School."
