Messy Game of Hide and Seek
"What?!" Jenna cried. Veronica was startled by the intensity of it. "No, I can't! She's following me!"
"Ah, yes, your possessed friend," Veronica could practically hear Shirley rolling her eyes. Though she wasn't able to confirm, as Shirley was out of sight. "Stay here. You're still in trouble, for one, and two, you'll be safer here, I promise."
"No, I won't!" Jenna cried. "I'll just lead Carrie here! And then all the people in here will be in danger! All the people you've imprisoned..."
Shirley barked a laugh. "Oh? What do you suggest then, letting them free?"
"Just don't keep me here, she's following me!"
"What in the world is going on?" Veronica jumped. She hadn't heard Alice scoot closer. As for her question... Veronica could only shrug.
"I don't know," she said back. "I'm not following any of this."
Alice hummed, sitting back down. "Okay."
"SHIRLEY!"
Once again, Veronica started. But this time, it wasn't because the cry came out of nowhere, it was the fact that there was something different about this scream. Something that made Veronica's blood curl.
But whatever it was, Shirley didn't seem to hear it.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" she yelled impatiently. She turned back to Jenna. "I'm not going to argue with you, whoever you are. You're staying here, no matter what."
Veronica listened to her footsteps as they faded away, before turning to look at Alice and Jenna. Unlike Shirley, they seemed to have heard the utter fear and terror in the man's voice.
"Um..." Jenna said after a moment. Her voice was shaking, and barely more than a whisper, but Veronica managed to hear her perfectly anyway. "Did you two...?"
Alice shuddered. "That was the worst thing I've ever heard."
"What was-?"
Veronica didn't get to finish her question, because at the moment, a horrifying scream filled the air. It was much higher than the man's, so Veronica guessed it was Shirley. But what could she be screaming at? What happened?
Veronica didn't like any of this. She didn't like the weird implication that something was coming, and she hated not knowing what was going on.
"Jenna!" Veronica hissed. Her voice was a whisper, but it sounded too loud as the world held its breath. "What's going on?!"
"It's-she-," Jenna cut herself off with a gasp. Veronica did not like the look on her face. But then she suddenly whirled around, looking shockingly intense. "Veronica, you have to find the detective. You have to!"
"Jen-"
"I found you."
Veronica shuddered. That voice was horrible. Like a normal human voice, but somehow it managed to slither around the air uncomfortable. But somehow it was also very monotone, no emotion or soul in it at all.
There was a loud THUMP and Veronica realized that Jenna had suddenly disappeared from the cell window. No new face appeared. Veronica didn't know if that was a blessing or a curse.
"Well, there's that one gone."
The voice continued, and Veronica instantly felt like curling up on herself. She both did and didn't want to know what happened to Jenna.
"I wonder... This has been so fun so far... Who should I seek next?"
There was a loud CLICK, and then all the cell doors in the prison swung open.
