Crowning Moment
"Ghosts? Murder? What?" Veronica's head was spinning. How the hell did the investigation of an app lead to this?
Meanwhile, the Detective was looking annoyed, like it was all Veronica's fault that she couldn't follow this crazy, somehow-not-made-up story.
"There is a ghost possessing a girl," the Detective explained once again. Veronica could practically hear her gritting her teeth. "And she's going around stabbing people. We need to go to the ghost's place of death to find some way to defeat her."
No one spoke for a minute.
"...For the record," Alice spoke up. "I understand."
Evan and Veronica exchanged a look. They were in the front seat, while the Detective and Alice were situated in the back.
"How do you know all this?" Veronica asked tentatively. "I mean, I didn't know the half of it..."
The Detective waved an irritated hand. "Using your information, the news, and general common sense."
Suddenly, she leaned forward, to Evan. Evan looked nervous, looking from the road back to her and back to the road.
"Go faster already!" the Detective huffed. "We don't have all day, you know! People are dying as we speak!"
"I'm...I am... This is the speed limit!" Evan cried.
"And?" the Detective snarled. "Is the speed limit going to save lives?"
Evan gulped, but the car sped up anyway. Veronica was glad there were no cops around...
With the Detective breathing down Evan's neck, the rest of the trip was a breeze, and they were at the high school in no time.
But it wasn't exactly as they expected it to be.
"There's nothing here," Veronica looked back at the Detective. "There's nothing here, it's just a parking lot!"
The Detective never faltered, despite Veronica's accusation. In fact, she barely even looked at Veronica.
"What's going on?" Evan asked, nervously.
"Someone died here," Alice said, and it wasn't a question, but the Detective answered anyway.
"A lot of someone's," the Detective told her. "Almost twenty. But one came back."
Veronica gulped. "Carrie White."
The Detective nodded.
"Yeah, but now she's stabbing people," Veronica continued. "So how is this parking lot going to help?"
The Detective rolled her eyes. "It isn't the parking lot that's going to help us, it's the place of death," she replied. "And this too."
Veronica blinked. What the Detective was holding up was a very dirty, very battered crown.
"The hell is that?"
"A prom queen crown," the Detective explained. She didn't seem to notice, or care, about Veronica's lack of enthusiasm. "Carrie White was killed in this, and she cared a lot about it. This should help us."
"Right," Veronica shook aside her skepticism for now. "And you just... had that one hand?"
The Detective rolled her eyes. "Don't be ridiculous... I got it before you had arrived."
Veronica frowned.
"How do we get her?" Alice asked. "What are we supposed to do?"
Veronica sighed. Alice seemed the most on board with this whole thing. The Detective looked over to her.
"I'm... not quite sure," the Detective admitted. "But we'll have to figure it out."
They didn't figure it out. Not then, or half an hour later. Even minute that past left Veronica in more and more anticipation; Carrie could show up at any moment.
But even after the four of them looked through the internet (both for the story of Carrie and for 'ghost banishing rituals'), even after they wondered around for a long time... they still had no clue what to do.
Veronica glowered at the Detective. If she was honest, she expected a little more of the person Jenna had seemed so sure could help them.
The Detective looked around, like she had been doing every five seconds. It didn't reassure Veronica at all, in fact, it made her more nervous.
"When is she supposed to come?" Veronica asked. She and the Detective had been the only two speaking for a while now, while Evan and Alice had been completely silent. Veronica almost felt a little bad, after all, they were practically dragged into it. Say whatever you want about her old group, at least they were mostly on board with her ideas.
Veronica was surprised when the Detective held up her phone. It wasn't even one she recognized, looking somehow both out of date and sci-fi alien.
Veronica peered at the screen. It showed the news, updated a minute ago.
Mass Serial Killer Moves to Center Street
Underneath it, it showed a number of places the 'serial killer' was theorized to go next, as well as things to keep a person safe. Veronica ignored all that, after all, she knew where Carrie was going, and she knew that there was practically no point in trying to protect herself, not when she was practically calling for Carrie to come to her.
Veronica also decided to ignore the large number of causalities she saw pilling up. After all, Carrie needed to come here. What could they do?
"Center Street?" Evan asked, looking over Veronica's shoulder. Veronica jumped, she hadn't heard him come over. "That's... That's close."
"It's not just close," the Detective told them, lowering her phone, it's practically here already. "We need to be ready?"
"Ready for what?!" Veronica demanded. "What's our plan?"
"I told you, I don't' have one," the Detective huffed. "Shockingly, I haven't delt with ghosts much in the past."
"..." Veronica took a deep breath. "If you don't have a plan, then what was the point of all of this?"
The Detective gave her a disinterested look. "At the very least, I post phoned all our deaths."
Veronica groaned. "Fantastic."
"Hey, don't worry!" Alice tried to comfort them both. It didn't work. "When can figure it out when she get's.... we can figure it out right now!"
Veronica and the Detective looked around wildly, and then they both tensed.
Carrie was here, coming towards them. She didn't look happy.
