Pride
"What a loser,"
"Do you think he brushes his teeth?"
"Nah, I don't think he even takes showers!"
"How can be just walk around like that?"
"Psshhh, who knows!"
"Hey, Stinky Jimmy!"
Students started chanting as a boy walked through the halls, head down.
What did Emily do though? Nothing. She grinned. This twenty-three year old woman was much more sophisticated than that Stinky Jimmy. That was Emily's way of thinking. That was everyone's way of thinking.
Her father was a wealthy man. He was the owner of the most well-known jewelry store in the nation. Because of this, Emily had everything she ever wanted: expensive clothing, high-end electronics, a luxurious car, you name it.
Everyone loved Emily for it. Only for her wealth. But Emily did not mind, as long as she was popular. Sure, it meant that no one cared about her as a person, sure everyone asked her for favors, and sure she was labeled the "typical rich kid" of the school, but none of that mattered.
"Hey, Emily! Wait up!" Emily turned to see her best "friend" call her. She smiled. It was fake.
"Hello Max," Emily replied as warmly as she could.
"Oh please, Emily. Max is unsophisticated and not fit for someone like me. I go by Maximus. A much more mature name. Keep that in mind, you idiot," Max replied, scoffing. Emily internally rolled her eyes.
"Whatever, Max. It does not matter because you aren't sophisticated," Emily snapped. Max pushed her, her back hit the wall. Some students stopped and stared. Max just glared.
"Whatever, you fool. Anyways, my phone broke so I expect you to buy me a new one," Max said nonchalantly, as if he did not just push Emily. It made her blood boil, but she eventually sighed. Max took this as an agreement.
"Well, if I have no other business here, I will be off to class. See you tomorrow with my new phone, Emily," he turned on his heel and walked away. Emily sighed once more. She needed to buy him stuff. It was the only way she could be liked. So Emily got up, held her head high, and walked away as if she owned the place. She bumped into someone and fell down, along with the other person.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I did not see you there!" Emily exclaimed, not seeing who it was.
"Oh no, it's my fault," he said. Emily finally looked and almost gasped out of surprise. In front of her was Jim. Jim also saw her and froze. Both of them sat there frozen. Then Jim got up.
"Well, I got to get to class bye!" Jim said quickly. He ran away the other direction, leaving Emily to her thoughts.
"Emily, you will be friends with Maximus."
"But Mama, I don't want to! He's mean!"
"Nonsense! You will do as I say! His family is also wealthy and now our official business partners! And you will also stop talking to that Jim fellow."
"But Mama-,"
"No buts! You will do so, for he is not fit to befriend you!"
"But..."
SMACK!
"And later on... I developed the same way of thinking."
"Do I really think everyone is better than me?"
"Of course I don't. That is a fact, so it's not me thinking."
"But is it?"
Emily shook her head and focused on getting to class herself.
Listening to the professor was not the most exciting thing in the world, so Emily spaced out. A lot. She thought about her future. She thought about the past. But she never thought about the present. She focused on her achievements and bragged about them. She saw the look on everyone's faces—the annoyed ones, the ones filled with envy, the ones saying they wanted to be in her place. Emily loved it.
Later after her classes and clubs ended, Emily made her way home in the night, avoiding everyone.
"Now maybe I can convince dad to buy a new phone..." Her thoughts were interrupted when a black SUV pulled up next to her. The driver pulled the windows down, revealing a balding man in his late 40s. Emily raised a brow.
"Ken Murphy," Emily mused. The man smiled, though it was not genuine.
"Ahhh, Emily. You're father has requested me to pick you up," Ken Murphy explained. He was a close associate with her father. Emily raised a brow.
"Oh? I always walk home though. I am fine this time as well," Emily said.
"You're father and I are doing business and no one is at home. He says he does not feel comfortable with you at home alone," he spoke, more forcefully this time.
"I always stay home alone though. What makes this any different?" Emily interrogated. She knew something was up. Just because she was prideful, it didn't mean that she wasn't smart.
"He suspects something will happen tonight," he said.
"Strange. Since when did Dad care?" Emily thought to herself. She shrugged and got in the car, missing the sinister smile on Ken Murphy's aging face. Before Emily could put her seatbelt on, the car lurched forwards, going at full speed.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Emily demanded, trying not to sound afraid. Her voice betrayed her.
"You will see soon, dear," Ken Murphy said, before chuckling softly. They turned the corner, making the car drift and almost fall over. Emily was thrown to the side of the car. She sat up groggily.
"Oh shi-!" Ken shouted. At first, Emily saw another car. Then nothing at all, pain flowing through her body as her eardrums exploded.
Everything was dead silent.
