Chapter 43
"Welcome class! Trial is about to start. Please take your place at a court stand." Monokuma replied, sitting on his throne. This court room didn't look anything like our court room....it looked just like the one in the first killing game. No one said a word as we approached the stands and stood upon them.
"Now, a brief explanation of the rules before we begin. You are all going to attempt to solve the case of this mysterious victim from the first killing game. If you all manage to vote correctly on the culprit, you are all set free everything. No executions. No more despair. You are free to run home straight to your mommy's. However, if you fail to get the culprit incorrect, all of you will be executed. There won't be any do over timelines. It'll be game over for sure." Monokuma explained.
"Everyone understand?"
No one said anything.
"Good! Then on we go to starting this thrilling class trial!" Monokuma stated. I took a deep breath before speaking up. "Okay, let's go over what we know so far. Can we all agree that we believe the culprit is indeed Mukuro Ikusaba, who was disguised as Junko?" I asked. Everyone nodded.
"We know this, cause Junko had killed herself. But the wounds on the body suggest otherwise. Plus, Mukuro's body was vacant from the morgue, when she was killed way earlier on in the killing game." Tsumugi replied. "How did Mukuro died though?" Himiko piped in. "In the Computer Lab, we found very helpful video footage. I think it'll be very helpful if everyone will watch it." Kiibo replied.
His eyes began to glow, and he began to project a screen from his eyes. He played the video, which showed the disguised Mukuro debating against the class trial....and then getting speared through. Everyone had gasped, watching with wide eyes. After a moment Kiibo turned off the video.
"What the- that doesn't make any sense. If Mukuro died in the beginning of the game like that, how come her body is suddenly in the Green Room later on in the game?" Kaito said. "And how did she die? She didn't appear to be executed or murdered, not even by the suspects we named earlier." Angie added.
"Yeah, we were pretty stumped by this as well. There must be some sort of reason though." Shuichi said.
"Rantaro, if you still have those photos, can you pass them around?" I asked. Rantaro nodded, and began to pass them down to the others. "We found these in the Principal's Office. I believe it shows the participants life before this killing game happened. Apparently they were close friends." he explained.
"But if that were the case, what would be the point of Mukuro disguising herself as Junko? If they all knew each other, they'd tell the difference right away, correct? Are we sure these photos are real?" Korekiyo asked.
"It's possible they can be fake, but there's no way to tell for sure." Shuichi said. I placed a hand on my chin. There must be a reason why they couldn't tell Mukuro was disguised. I mean, the only way they couldn't know is if they didn't know who Mukuro or Junko even were-
I perked up.
"Wait....what if something happened? With there minds I mean." I said. "Huh? What do you mean?" Korekiyo asked. "The only way someone wouldn't know that was Mukuro is if they didn't know her at all. Is it possible....that their memories were wiped?" I asked. Everyone looked at me surprised.
"Their memories were wiped?" Korekiyo repeated.
"Think about it. If they really were such close friends, they wouldn't even think about killing each other, much less recognize Junko's twin in disguise. So in order to make the killing game even happen, Junko probably wiped their memories. Normally I wouldn't believe that myself, but....there's a chance someone fabricated our whole personalities. Knowing that, nothing seems impossible." I replied.
"I see. I suppose that would explain that." Korekiyo replied.
"But how would their memories be wiped anyway? There's not nearly as much tech in here as in our academy, so nothing could be built to do that." Miu asked. "Well, I'm sure Junko had a little help...." I said, glaring at Monokuma. He chuckled, placing a paw over his mouth.
"You're a big meanie, Kokichi, you know that?" Monokuma asked.
"Kokichi not mean! Kokichi very nice person!" Gonta stated. I smiled. "It's okay, Gonta. Don't let Monokuma get to you." I said. Gonta looked at me surprised. "He's trying to make you angry. Don't let him do that. Just ignore like, as if he wasn't even there." I replied. Gonta smiled and nodded.
"Anyway, let's continue this. Now, as for Mukuro's death....I cannot be sure why she was ever killed." Shuichi said. "Me either. But you gotta admit, that girl had guts. She even managed to step on the stupid little bear. Now that's gotta be some way to stand up for yourself." Kaito replied. My eyes widened.
"Kaito! Say that again!" I said. Kaito flinched, kinda startled, but nodded. "Uh, the girl had guts. She even stepped on the stupid little bear-"
"That's it!" I said. "What?! What does that mean?!" Kaito said. "She stepped on Monokuma! Think about it, what's one of the most important rules in these killing games?" I said. Everyone paused for a moment to think, until Kaito perked up.
"No one can touch Monokuma....or they'll be killed. Oh shoot, Mukuro had broken the school rules! That's why she was killed!" he said. "But then, the person in charge of the punishments....was Junko?" Tenko asked. "It's looking like Junko did kill Mukuro. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a betrayal on Junko's part. The shock on Mukuro's face would explain that." Kiibo said.
"That does sounds like the right answer, but....there's still more to this case. I want to know what was Junko's plan in having her corpse dragged out into the Green Room, and so late in the game at that. Having a case based on someone who's already dead....that doesn't seem right to me." I stated.
"There must be a reason to it. I don't seen why she would do that for nothing." Ryoma said. "But what could her reason be?" Shuichi asked. We all stood there for a moment, pondering what had happened. There was a moment of silence, before Himiko spoke up.
"....what if it was a trap?" I looked at her surprised.
"A trap?" I said. She nodded. "I mean, these participants got pretty far in solving this case. Maybe...maybe they did something that made Junko set a trap, so that she could execute one of the participants before they got too far. Rantaro perked up, and took out the Skeleton Key he had. "This key was in the room of Kyoko Kirigiri. I wonder....did she have possession of it before? Maybe she stole it." he said.
"Which would mean she had access to the Principal's Office and the Computer Lab, and lots of valuable information. So....Junko probably used the masked corpse to make them think there was a sixteenth student. By doing so, they wouldn't have suspected it being Junko's corpse or Mukuro's corpse. And by doing so....they could frame Kirigiri before she got too far." Shuichi said.
"Would she be the only one to frame though?" I asked. "I have more video footage here. Maybe I can find something useful." Kiibo replied. His eyes began to glow again, and he spammed through lots of footage. Until eventually....he went to a video that was filmed in Makoto's room. It was the same masked suspect, with the same coat and mask that was on Mukuro's corpse.
The masked suspect went to Makoto's drawer, and pulled out a knife. Then, they crept towards the sleeping Makoto. However, Makoto barely woke up, looking at the suspect. That was when Kirigiri entered the room, and managed to chase out the suspect. Afterwards, the video ended.
"What the- that wasn't Mukuro was it?" Kaito said. "I doubt it. Honestly....I'm more convinced that was Junko in disguise." I said. "But why would she enter Makoto's room, only to not attack him?" Tenko asked.
"Framing him." I stated. Everyone looked to me surprised.
"Think of it. Makoto had a knife in his drawer, the same knife that was stabbed into Mukuro's chest. Meaning, that once everyone saw the body, they would think Makoto had killed her. She wasn't framing Kyoko, not yet at least. She was framing Makoto." I stated. Everyone looked to me surprised.
"Want my idea of what had happened? Here's what I think. Junko had her sister 'punished' early on in the game, after she had touched Monokuma, breaking the school rules. Later on in the game, she saw they were discovering more and more secrets. Eventually, her cover would be blown, and they would find out too much. So, she put on this mask and coat, and pretended to attack Makoto, stealing his knife as well. That made everyone believe there was a sixteenth student in the academy."
"Then, she dragged out Mukuro's body to the Green Room, and put the mask and coat on it. As well as stabbed her chest with Makoto's knife. All of this was to make it seem like Makoto had killed this sixteenth student. And if anyone wanted to see who the culprit was, the grenade would detonate, destroying the body. That way, Junko's identity would be kept a secret." I said.
"I see....that all makes sense. Everything seems to tie up." Tsumugi said. "Even these photos make sense then. Mukuro isn't in any of these, and Junko's face is the only thing that's hidden in every single one of them. That way, her identity would be a secret." Rantaro said.
"So then, we agree.....Junko Enoshima killed Mukuro Ikusaba?" I said. Everyone nodded.
"Pufufufufu! Impressive detective work there, Kokichi. You seem awfully confident about this case. If that's the case, I have an idea to make things just a little bit more interesting." Monokuma replied.
"You can't change the rules! We had a deal!" Himiko stated. "Relax, it's one, tiny change. I promise. Scouts honor." Monokuma stated. He stood up from his throne.
"You all seem to have such faith in your so called leader. So, let's do this....Kokichi is the only one who gets to vote on the culprit."
My eyes widened. "What?! What do you mean?!" Kaito asked. "You know what it means. Only Kokichi gets to vote on the culprit. There won't be a majority vote. It's simply if you get it right or wrong this time. I mean, you all seem confident on your choice. What harm could it do?" Monokuma asked.
Suddenly my voting screen lit up, and a selection was shown to me. "Go ahead, Kokichi. You have the floor." Monokuma replied. I stared at the screen for a moment, again feeling that pit in my stomach. I mean sure, we figured out all the loose ends, but....are we correct? Did Junko kill her sister? I mean, who else could it be if not her? I slowly reached out, about to select Junko's icon.
"Just remember, everyone's lives depend on your vote." Monokuma stated.
