Chapter 17
I just mere moments she lunged for me, hammer held high. My eyes widened, but I swiftly dodged the swing, causing her to smash one of her easels instead. Then she snapped her head back to me.
"Do not move! It will be over quickly!" she stated. She again swung her hammer. I leaned back, barely dodging it. However she quickly adjusted her grip so that she was about to slam it down onto my chest. I let myself fall onto my back and roll over, causing her to slam onto the ground instead.
"Angie what the hell?! You need to stop this right now!" I snapped.
"I cannot! It is Atua's will! And I must obey!" Angie stated. She continued to swing the hammer at me crazily, seeming desperate just for one strike. As I continued to dodge, I looked around the room in a panic, searching for anything that might be used as a weapon.
"I certainly can't kill her. I....I don't want to kill her. But if she manages to kill me, the killing game will start....and all hell will break lose." I thought. Angie wore a broad smile, and once again swung at me, aiming for the side of my head. My eyes widened.
"There!" I seized the opportunity, and caught Angie's wrist. Then I briskly swung my foot against her ankles, so that she would fall back. She yelped as she tripped and landed on her back, dropping the hammer. I didn't hesitate to climb on top of her and pin her wrists above her head.
"Gotcha!" I said. Angie looked at me wide eyed, then she immediately began to struggle, frantically kicking her legs and pulling at her arms.
"NO! Let me go! Let me go right now! I don't have a choice! Atua says you must die!" she screamed. I struggled to hold her still, but managed somehow. She is a lot stronger then she looks.
"Angie stop it! Calm down! You gotta stop!" I said. She ignored me, and only squirmed more. I was growing frustrated. She wasn't even listening. She's just caught up in trying to kill me. I need to snap her out of it, make her listen to me.
"Angie Yonaga!" I said sternly. Before I knew it, my hand came into contact with her cheek, making a loud smacking sound......and she froze.
She completely froze. Eyes wide, staring at me in what seemed like horror. Her body almost felt limp beneath me. Her mouth was barely open, and she only panted lightly. My own eyes widened, and I stared at my hand for a moment. I....I slapped a girl. I've never slapped a girl before. But, I didn't have a choice. She wouldn't calm down. That's what I kept telling myself....but I didn't feel any better.
"Sorry....but you had to stop." I said. I climbed off her, sitting beside her. Angie had not moved. I sighed, helping her to sit up. That was when she slowly raised a hand to her now red cheek.
"Angie...." I said calmly. Angie turned her head to look at me, her shock finally fading away.
"What happened?" I asked. Angie looked away, a shadow casting over her eyes. There was a moment of silence, but I waited patiently. After what felt like forever she finally spoke. "A-Atua said that....i-if I killed you, t-the bomb wouldn't go off. E-Everyone....would be safe." she said.
".....and that's the truth?" Angie looked to me, giving me a puzzled expression. I narrowed my eyes, scooting closer to her.
"Atua told you to kill me? Are you sure about that?" I asked. Angie immediately opened her mouth, but I held a hand up, stopping her.
"Don't. Lie. Not to me, or yourself."
That made the girl close her mouth. She looked away, her eyes deep in thought, as if resisting something. A mental conflict with herself. She began to clench onto her yellow coat, clenching it tightly between her hands. She shut her eyes tightly, which were beginning to tear up. I slowly reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Angie?"
".....no, Atua told me nothing. He....he tell me nothing!" Angie suddenly shouted. The tears began to stream down her cheeks.
"I thought I should kill you, for everyone's sake! Not Atua! I, Angie Yonaga, thought I had to kill you!" she shouted, placing her hands on the sides of her head. She lowered her head and began to cry, soft sobs escaping her as tears began to drip onto the floor.
"I'm so sorry! I'm so so sorry! I-I didn't want to kill you, but.....I thought I didn't have a choice." she said. I watched as the girl began to cry, refusing to look at me. It honestly made me feel awful, seeing a girl break down like this in front of me. I was at a loss of what to do.....but I acted before I even thought.
I gently grabbed the girl and hugged her. Angie gasped, her crying ceasing for a moment. She felt tense under my touch.
"Kokichi...."
"It's fine. I'm not mad," I said, pulling back from the hug, "I'm just glad I managed to stop you. You might've done something you would've regretted." Angie looked down and sniffled, wiping her eyes.
"Indeed...."
"I'm also happy that you were honest with me. You told me the truth, and took responsibility for your actions, not some stupid god." I said. I placed my hands on her shoulders, and she looked up at me.
"You know why I kept insulting Atua? Why I kept nagging about him? Because you did exactly what Kiyo says. You were using Atua's name to do what you wished, an excuse to do what you wished. Maybe you did it on purpose, or maybe you really did think Atua was all powerful, but either way you used him. You abused his power." I said. Angie's eyes slowly began to widen, slowly realizing her actions.
"I....you're right. Y-You're right. I....I-I used Atua. I used his name to do as I pleased. I....used him as an excuse....for murder." she whimpered, a few more tears streaming down her cheeks.
"What have I done.....I'm a monster." she murmured.
"No you're not." I stated. She looked at me in surprise. "B-But I-"
"It's funny actually, I just had this talk with Kiyo earlier today. But anyway, you are not a monster. A real monster wouldn't realize their actions were wrong. They wouldn't feel bad for the things they did. The way I see it, as long as you decide to change from now on, then all can be forgiven." I said. I leaned back, smiling at the Ultimate Artist.
"So, you gonna change?" I asked. Angie looked at me in shock.....but she began to put on a small smile.
"Yes," she said, wiping her tears away and putting on a wider smile, "I will change! For everyone's sake! And for Atua's sake! I won't rely upon him, but rather work hard for him!" she stood up. "Starting with finding that bomb!" she stated.
.....
"THE BOMB!!!!!" we shouted in unison. We were so caught up with all this crap that we got completely side tracked.
"H-How much time do we have left?!" Angie asked. I checked my Monopad for the time, eyes widening. "Shit, we only have twenty minutes!" I said. I stood up, making a run for the door.
"We should keep searching- GAH!" I tripped over something, landing face first onto the floor.
"Ow!" I looked to what I tripped on, seeing Angie's portrait of Kiyo. "Sorry...." I said. "I-It's fine. You okay?" Angie asked, helping me to my feet. "Fine, I guess." I said. I again glanced at the portrait.....and my eyes widened.
"Wait.....hold up a sec." I said. I quickly turned on my Monopad, looking over the clue again.
"Tainted green tightness, white cloth wrapping round veins, mask of darkness, knowledge beyond comprehension....oh fuck." I muttered.
"Kokichi?" Angie said. I immediately pulled her closer, showing her the clue. "Angie, this is not a clue to the bomb's location. Read the description closely, what does that sound like to you?" I asked. Angie read the clue with narrowed eyes. As she quietly read allowed, her eyes wandered to her portrait of Kiyo.....and they widened.
"You don't think...." she said.
"Tainted green tightness, like Kiyo's uniform. White cloth wrapping round veins, like the bandages on his arms. Mask of darkness, like the mask he wears. And he certainly has a lot of knowledge, being an anthropologist! Angie, this isn't describing the bomb's location....it's describing its target." I said.
"B-but how can the bomb strike him specifically? It's on Kiyo, is it?" Angie said.
"No, or we'd all notice," I said, placing a hand on my chin, "more likely the bomb is planted where only Kiyo would go, so it could strike him-"
"His bedroom! That's the only place only he goes to!" Angie said.
"Come on! We have to go!" I stated. Angie unlocked the door and we both bolted out of the room, dashing down the hall and going as fast as we could to the dormitory. On our way there, Tenko and Maki were walking towards us. "Guys? Did you find the bomb?" Tenko asked.
"We figured out the clue! Where the hell is Kiyo?!" I said.
"He insisted on searching the dormitory himself." Maki replied. My eyes widened, and I looked to Angie, exchanging equally horrified expressions. Without another word we ran past the two girls. "Hey! What's going on?!" Tenko called back. We ignored her, and hurried to the dormitory. I checked the time. We had two minutes.
"We're not gonna make it!" Angie said.
"Yes we are! We're almost there!" I stated. We came closer and closer to the dormitory, pushing the doors wide open. Upon coming inside, I immediately saw the Ultimate Anthropologist....walking to his bedroom.
"Kiyo no! Get away from there!" Angie cried, running towards him. Kiyo turned to us, looking surprised.
"Kokichi? Angie? What is the matter-"
"Time's up kids! Time for the big kaboom!" Monokuma said over the announcement. My eyes widened.
"KIYO!!!" Angie rushed over to him, grabbing his arm and pulling him away from his bedroom door. She only managed to get him a few feet away before there was suddenly a large eruption of orange from Kiyo's dorm. The force of the explosion caused me to cry out, sending me flying and crashing into the wall. A wave of pain coursed through my back, and immediately I began to cough from the smoke.
"Shit...." I muttered. I attempted to peer through the smoke, eyes widening. Kiyo's dorm, needlessly to say, was obliterated, leaving a huge hole where his room used to be, revealing the night sky being shrouded in smoke. I was beyond surprised how the dorms beside Kiyo's were more of less untouched. But that didn't matter to me.....my focus was on Kiyo and Angie, who were laying side by side on the ground....and not moving.
My heart immediately sank to my stomach as I assumed the worst. No....they can't be.
"KIYO!! ANGIE!!"
